[traffic news radio] And just like that,

you would never know we've had a blizzard

literally bring the city to its knees.

[Narrator] After a day of heavy snow,

Toronto drivers are waking up

to a smooth morning commute.

[plow driver] It was actually a pretty intense storm.

For the longest time,

it was dropping two and half

to three centimetres an hour.

The echelon actually got through here,

so it's a little clearer now.

[Narrator] It's good news for drivers on the 401...

[Narrator] ...but clean roads

can't prevent bad decisions.

[Narrator] ...and on the western edge of the city,

traffic is slowing down.

So I'm just heading over to a two-vehicle collision

involving a transport truck

and another vehicle that's rolled over.

[Narrator] Sergeant Kerry Schmidt's

smooth morning

is about to get rough.

Apparently the vehicle's 401 eastbound

in the express lanes

between Dixie and Renforth.

The one vehicle that rolled over

may now be in the collector lanes.

[Kerry] So right now,

this is affecting both sides of the highway.

Is this...

Is this the crash here already?

[Narrator] The transport rear-ended a car,

which then shot up over the piled snow.

[Kerry] Holy cow.

What a mess.

This is exactly where the car

launched up on that snowbank,

and he ended up wedging out a bit of a channel,

and then going right up over that wall,

and ended up just down-range

about 20 or 30 metres.

Crews are still working

on clearing the snow from the shoulder.

Unfortunately,

that snowbank actually acted as a ramp

and caused that vehicle

to launch right over those concrete walls.

How're you feeling? Are you okay?

And traffic in front of you was stopped or slowing down?

Oh, man!

You are a very lucky man.

[Kerry] The driver, he had no escape route,

and when he got hit,

he just held on for the ride,

and he's lucky that he's not more seriously injured.

[Kerry] We're into the afternoon,

into rush hour,

and obviously this is not a good situation.

The bumper's pushed back pretty hard.

They're probably gonna tow him off the highway here.

The sooner we get this winched out, the better.

We have traffic backed up for kilometres.

Oh, my goodness, what a mess.

[Kerry] We're just in the process right now

of getting the vehicle out from between the wall,

and the heavy tow's on scene

just pulling the transport truck out of the snowbank.

We need to get that truck out of the snowbank,

and then get that car back up on its wheels

and get it removed as well.

Almost done?

Just pull it back a little bit.

Just clearing some debris on the shoulder,

and we'll get these lanes reopened.

All right, it's time for you to go.

As soon as both those vehicles were clear,

the highways were all reopened,

and traffic returned to normal flow pretty quick.

[Narrator] But it's a reminder

that a bad crash

doesn't require bad conditions.

[Schmidt] We always remind drivers

to pay attention,

be aware of changing traffic conditions,

'cause we know how quickly they can change.

[Narrator] 250 kilometres north,

Sonny Subra is heading up Highway 11

to his own clear-weather call.

There's a tractor-trailer went into the ditch,

up north of Huntsville,

so we have to go there

and then pull them out.

It's coming out!

[Narrator] After moving to AZ Towing

at the start of the winter,

Sonny's had more time for his family.

The AZ Towing is really a good tow company,

and they are really big.

I don't really have to do anything

rather than just towing.

I don't have to deal with the customer or anything,

just focus on my work.

[Narrator] ...but the shift

has come with a challenge.

[Sonny] I'm sliding.

[Narrator] He's had to learn to make do

with a less powerful wrecker...

[Sonny] It's coming out.

Regardless of what the situation is,

bigger truck or smaller truck,

I will manage to get it done.

[Narrator] ...but today,

he might be facing a real test of that confidence.

[Sonny groans]

I am thinking this is gonna be a harder one.

I see a tractor-trailer into the ditch.

It's very close to the northbound lane

facing southbound.

Hopefully it's gonna come out.

[Narrator] After veering through the median,

the semi is wedged into the ditch

facing the wrong way.

[Narrator] Sonny will need serious help

from AZ rotator op Alam Aulakh.

[Sonny] This trailer, it's really heavy.

On the tractor, the axle is twisted,

so it will be harder for us

to drag it in the right way.

[Narrator] It will be up to Sonny

and his 25-tonne wrecker

to ease the semi backward

and onto the northbound highway...

[Narrator] but the maxed-out load

could easily force the trailer over

as it climbs the slope,

so Alam will try to hold it upright.

So now I'm gonna move and make the angle...

Hi, we are ready to make a move.

We just need the left lane for now.

We're gonna try and pull it out

as much as we can,

and get it out on the road.

[Sonny] The hardest part of the recovery,

no space.

There's no big shoulder there.

[Narrator] To keep traffic moving,

Sonny has to work in just a single lane.

[Narrator] The truck's driver will help steer,

but he'll be fighting a bent axle on his tractor.

Hopefully my truck is not gonna slide,

but this one is really heavy.

The trailer is not moving.

That much weight in there.

[Narrator] Sonny's wrecker

is simply outmatched.

I'm losing this tug-of-war.

[Narrator] They need to change the plan.

- Yeah. - Okay, do that, then.

[Narrator] They'll try to use the rotator

to give Sonny a headstart on the pull.

[Sonny] So, what we are gonna do,

we are gonna swing and lift at the back of the trailer,

and bring it right here.

Then we're gonna start pulling.

[Alam] Okay, bud?

[Sonny] Yeah, go, go.

Other winch, yeah.

Slide back it, yeah.

That's good.

Should be okay, yeah?

You gonna need more?

So, we're gonna get this winch,

and then run it there to the legs, right?

And then I'll pull from this winch only.

[Narrator] Now that the truck's

at a better angle to the road,

Sonny's hoping he can pull it back,

but he's still fighting 80,000 pounds.

It's coming out.

The trailer, it's out of the ditch right now.

So now everything easy,

so the load is out.

[Narrator] Alam will hold the semi upright

and help direct it sideways...

into the single lane...

At least nobody got injured, you know,

that's the main part.

[Narrator] With only one working winch on the wrecker,

they won't be able to rotate the semi

to move it off the highway.

It's not a good day.

There's no way you're gonna do a U-turn

in the highway,

so, like, the only way...

It's gotta go the wrong way to get out.

So the plan has changed.

We have to shut down the highway

for the final pull.

I'm gonna go tell the OPP.

So if you guys shut it down,

it won't take more than 30 minutes.

[Sonny] So I told them 30 minutes

because I wanted to get it done fast as I can.

I wanted to push it so hard.

Okay, so they know the plan,

and we're gonna have to pack everything.

[Sonny] Every minute counts,

so we have to get this highway open

as fast as we can.

We are in a hurry to get everything out,

and I have only one winch,

so we're gonna try it with the one winch

to pull it out.

I'm just waiting for confirmation to shut down.

That really give us some traction to pull it out.

to haul out the trailer.

[Narrator] The semi is on the northbound highway,

but still facing southbound.

[Sonny] Take the brakes off.

Should be okay. Let's pull the pin.

[Narrator] With the entire northbound highway closed

all the way to the next ramp,

the OPP provide an escort...

[Narrator] ...while Sonny and Alam finish up

with the tractor.

[Narrator] Now that they've got the tractor

on the hook,

they can clear the scene...

- We got it done. - Thank you for your help.

It's a relief.

We're gonna get the highway opened right now.

We're already hooked up, we're gonna go.

[Sonny] This one really gave us a hard time,

but we won the battle.

[Narrator] ...and there's still a lot of winter,

and a lot more battles

to come.

[Sonny] So many things gonna come along,

but we gonna find a solution,

and then we'll get it done,

so, that's the happiest moment, like, when we do finish it,

and nobody got injured,

only the winch line broken.

That's okay, we'll get it fixed.

[honks twice]

[Narrator] 150 kilometres northwest...

[Narrator] traffic up Highway 69

is passing the scene of a serious collision.

[Narrator] The trailer is ripped open,

spilling crates of buttermilk

all over the ditch.

[Steve] Now, that looks like a mess.

[Narrator] Cleaning up that mess

will be Lewis Heavy Towing's senior op,

Steve Cooke.

[Steve] Oh, boy.

There's no roof on this, there's no front wall.

The driver caught the edge of the shoulder there

and went over.

It's probably about 20 or 30 feet down

with a rock crop that he hit,

and it blew the front of the trailer right off.

A lot of damage on this one.

The biggest problem is the trailer's so compromised

that on the other side of this trailer,

there's nothing, there's no wall.

The first six feet of the floor is missing.

Let's give it a bit, Steve,

see what it'll do.

[Narrator] Based in Barrie,

Steve often works alongside Rescue 51's

James and Fabiana Ireland...

Hook it up and out of here.

[Narrator] ...but today,

he's relying on fellow Lewis op

Shannon Avery,

an 18-year veteran in the business.

[Shannon] It's gonna be so much fun!

The trailer is torn apart,

the reefer's up in the bush.

It's a lot of carnage and a lot of cleanup.

We gotta come up with a game plan.

[Steve] Me and Shannon work for different areas of Lewises.

He manages the North Bay location.

He's a good worker,

and we get along great.

When we go to roll this,

it's gonna roll into the hill, right?

The driver walked away,

but the rest of the load did not.

We'll do the trailer first,

'cause it's gonna be the nightmare.

Like, I could chain... sling to this.

Sling to this with your truck...

Yeah.

And then I'll wrap it around the back with mine,

then we'll just bring it right up here

and out onto the road.

So the idea was to roll it up in the ditch,

and then bring it up with two of my trucks

up onto the highway there.

There ain't much holding this thing on, eh?

All there is is that little piece.

[Narrator] With the front of the trailer

ripped to shreds,

just finding a place to hook on will be challenge.

So, this is your kingpin plate.

So that's what holds the strength of the trailer

when you're towing it.

The king pin's compromised,

so you can't pull on it.

There's nothing there,

so we just have to pick

different anchor points.

Little bit of boulders, but...

[Steve] The problem with this job

is there's a lot of stumps, rocks,

stuff underneath the snow,

so there's a lot of things that you don't see

until you actually start the recovery.

The excavator can come in here

and start working this stuff outta the way.

So we'll work on the trailer first.

We're gonna get all the debris outta the inside of it,

'cause as you can see,

the, uh... there's no roof or walls left in this thing.

[Steve] We had to scoop out all the dairy product

that was in the trailer,

just to lighten it up

on the wall that was so damaged.

Yeah, no, no crying over spilled milk today.

[Steve] The good thing about it

is that the load was all frozen,

so it's a little easier for the cleanup.

Whew.

On the top of the leg.

Yeah.

[Narrator] The crew rigs from Shannon's wrecker

to the landing gear...

Go down to that strap on the back.

[Narrator] ...and they run a line from Steve's truck

to the rear axle of the trailer.

[Steve] So we're gonna roll this up now,

and if need be,

you can always just give it a little...

push over on the snow, right?

Hopefully it all comes over in one piece,

but when it's compromised so bad, who knows?

This is gonna get ugly.

The wall's coming with it. Keep going.

Well, look at that,

the plate's falling right into place.

Everything stayed together, which was good.

All the walls were flapping around a little bit.

[Narrator] but getting it upright

was just the first hurdle.

Now they need to get it onto the road

in one piece.

Not much structure left in the front,

so we'll see how it comes out now.

It'll be a dice toss

whether it does or not.

We gotta get this job done.

The more time that we're out here,

the better chances

that we are gonna be involved in another collision.

[Steve] Motoring public coming by,

you know, you don't wanna have any distractions for them.

[Shannon] It's super dangerous.

This don't make it very nice.

All the structure's gone,

so we're gonna see when we start pulling on it

if it comes out.

is working to rig the trailer

for its trip up the bank.

This don't make it very nice.

All the structure's gone,

so we're gonna see when we start pulling on it

if it comes out.

[Steve] Half the wall was missing,

all the roof was ripped off it,

so it's gonna make it a real good pull

to get out of there.

We're gonna grab a hold of it,

we're gonna lift that plate up,

hopefully securing the trailer enough

to be able to lift the front end.

[Narrator] Shannon will slowly pull the trailer

towards the road,

with an excavator in the back

for added support.

Just get the legs up a bit.

the trailer's holding,

but now they have to winch it to the road,

and that will require some extra room...

always makes it a little more difficult.

We're limited for space.

We're having the OPP shut down the extra lane there.

It literally will save hours on repositioning.

I'm gonna come off my truck down around the back,

and I'm gonna suck it all up onto the road,

but I just need one more lane.

They're gonna give me a lane for 15 minutes.

Take my drag winch and put it on that line.

[Steve] I'm going to hook to the back corner

and try to bring the back end of the trailer

sideways up the hill.

Steve's grabbing the rear of it,

and slowly pulling it up.

[Steve] It was a big job, a long job, and a cold job,

but every one that goes like that

is a win for sure.

[Narrator] The next morning

brings clear skies over Cornwall.

[Andrew] This is an "all hands on deck"

kind of job.

[Narrator] ...but Andrew Vink

and the Herb's Towing crew

are heading to a massive scene

at the eastern end of the 401.

So, we're heading down to a tractor-trailer

that rolled over and got pretty mangled,

ripped the trailer apart,

and this thing is pretty much destroyed.

Quite the scene we're gonna be dealing with.

So, quite the mess we got going on here.

You don't see them wheels-up too often.

[Andrew] This thing is spread all over the place.

You take a 200-foot area,

and that's pretty much the wreck.

A lot of things going on.

[Narrator] Last night,

in freezing rain,

the eastbound semi,

loaded with pet food,

lost control on the curve.

It swerved into the ditch,

rolling and ripping into three pieces.

[Bill] This looks like it's gonna be a real fun one.

[Narrator] Senior op Bill Fell is sizing up the job,

one of the biggest he's faced

since Andrew's put him in a leadership role.

I think we're gonna have a long day of work here.

[Bill] It must have been a pretty violent crash

to rip everything apart like that,

to have the trailer in three pieces,

and the truck on its side twisted like that.

It's nuts.

I can't tell, is that a dry van?

[Andrew] Bill is a pure example

of what kind of operators I need

to run this heavy division.

With his years of experience,

he sets the bar up real high for newcomers.

[Cass] We're here, baby!

[Narrator] Today,

the newcomer is Cassandra Hay,

marking her very first heavy recovery.

Oh, boy, this is gonna be a big one.

Uh, it's quite the wreck.

Go double-line up.

- Axle. Double line. - Yep.

[Narrator] Cass has been at Herb's

for the past six months,

working light- and medium-duty jobs.

People have been so pleasantly welcoming about it.

The comments are always "Man, this is awesome.

I love seeing a woman doing this."

That's about it right there, Cass.

She is beyond one of the best hires I've done

in the last decade.

Always learning in this job.

[Narrator] Now Andrew's banking

that she's ready to start learning

the heavy side of the business.

I've always strived to be better,

and strived to be at the top,

and the heavies are top of the food chain.

Just destroyed it.

[Bill] The truck's a little twisted.

The trailer's still stuck on it.

I want to be very careful

trying to get that apart.

I wanna take care of this

before we start the offload.

You'll be working with Ralph.

Anything needing torching, cutting,

and anything that has to do with the rescue tooling,

I knew I needed to split the team up.

One team needed to take care of the recovery aspect,

and a team needed to take care of the cargo aspect.

has to offload the 42,000 pounds of pet supplies.

[Cass] So they wanna start unloading it? Okay.

It's grunt work.

You're not playing with the rotators,

you're shovelling dog food.

[Dan] Any broken ones, put them aside.

We've got a nice assembly line going,

making things go quickly.

Not the easiest thing to offload.

You're dealing with cargo offload,

you're dealing with environmental,

dealing with trailer,

then you're dealing with the tractor.

This is a massive wreck we're dealing with.

Gonna get our muscles,

'cause we're gonna be handbombing for a few hours.

Quite the operation.

[Narrator] On the 401 east of Cornwall...

need to push through a marathon offload

before they can begin to recover

the remains of the trailer.

Probably be dreaming

of throwing bags of pet food down

for the next couple days.

[Cass] This'll be my first heavy recovery,

so, uh...

really digging in there elbows deep.

[Andrew] Slow and steady.

The offload's taking a little longer

than what we anticipated,

but there's no other way.

We can't get the load-all down there.

[Andrew] Gotta get the cargo offloaded.

You're dealing with the truck, trailer.

Quite the operation.

[Narrator] ...but just releasing the tractor

is causing concern for Bill.

So we're just trying to figure out

the best and safest way

to separate this trailer from the truck

because it's really twisted,

so if we do this the wrong way,

it could spring back, and it could hurt somebody.

[Narrator] With the metal so twisted,

opening the fifth-wheel plate

could cause a whiplash effect.

[Bill] I was a little nervous about the fifth-wheel situation.

We have the front of the trailer

ripped off the rest of it,

and still attached to the truck.

Trying to get this apart is gonna be...

a little tricky.

We'll have to manipulate it.

[Narrator] Using an excavator...

[Narrator] ...they'll try to ease the pressure

and get the fifth wheel unlocked.

[Narrator] Now they can separate the wreckage.

I would say that would probably be our best bet,

we can use an auxiliary to pull on this.

while the other pulls the trailer,

forcing them apart.

is still new to rigging with the rotator.

I'm used to working with a straight truck

where I'm not lifting trucks in the air,

I'm actually pulling them out.

Experience,

you don't get it anywhere else

but with your two boots on the ground, right?

Then that way, when you get to the other side,

You got metal twisted upon metal,

so once you start to try and pull that apart,

it could go anywhere.

a dangerously twisted tractor and trailer.

you're bound to have something snap back at you,

where it doesn't react

the way you expected it to react,

which kind of makes it dangerous.

[Bill] It's free.

[Bill] It actually came apart pretty easily.

I'd rather rig for the worst

and have it come out good,

That went really, really well.

[Shawn] Okay, now the fun part begins.

The harder part was gonna be the trailer,

trying to get that all untangled.

It's all tangled up underneath the load.

[Bill] Probably cut all this stuff

off of the back of it

so we can transport this section.

[Narrator] They'll have to cut the trailer

and transport the wreckage in pieces...

Okay, mama.

[Bill] Everything's pretty twisted still.

There's some pressure on it.

We've got to try and lift it up

to ease some of that pressure

so we can cut properly.

Come on, baby. There we go.

You wanna use this one, then pull it?

Yeah, that's what I'll do.

We'll pull it once she's closer to the ground

where Cass can actually saw down the wall easier.

[Andrew] It's kinda sitting on the bench,

and the coach saying, "You know what? Your turn.

Get on the ice."

All righty!

We're gonna cut it into three different sections,

cutting off the back walls

so that we can get it outta the ditch.

[Cass] I was pretty exhausted.

I was pretty tired.

My arms were feeling like Jell-O,

and now we're going into phase two of the recovery,

where cutting's starting to happen.

I'm pretty comfortable around a saw, which is good.

[starts motor]

[Cass] These saws are heavy,

and if they kick back,

they're going to send you flying.

[Shawn] You can come by the other side, Cass.

[Bill] Cutting mangled metal like that

can be very dangerous.

It can spring back at you.

Okay, so you're gonna cut that one,

cut that one right off... - Okay.

And that way that releases,

and that comes off the bogie.

It's pretty nerve-racking.

Okay.

Whoo!

When it snapped, it flew.

[Cass] As I'm cutting through, then it kicks back,

and the saw's now launched me backwards.

I think we need a new blade.

[Narrator] ...but Cass has freed the mangled wall

from the rear of the trailer,

so they can start to remove the pieces.

[Shawn] Lift up very, very...

Okay, whoa, whoa, whoa. Boom up, boom in.

Boom up, boom in.

Kind of in a race to get this done

before the sun goes down.

You don't wanna be working the highway at dark.

[Narrator] But just moving the awkward pieces...

[Shawn] Okay, give me a sec, Billy.

Whoa, give me a sec, Billy.

[Narrator] is taking more time

than they have to spare.

[Bill] I don't want him to push that way.

I need to come this way, to follow.

[Shawn] Whoa, Billy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

[Shawn] Okay, a little bit more.

[Narrator] East of Cornwall...

You're gonna go very slowly on your blue.

[Narrator] ...the Herb's crew

is wrangling the back end of the trailer

towards the road,

but it's still too big to transport.

I think we're gonna have to cut the wall.

[Bill] We need to kinda cut these walls

to make it fit on our trailer.

We can't have walls sticking out

three feet into traffic.

I think they want me to cut along the line here,

like, along the side,

and cut the beam off.

All the way up to the top there.

[Cass] You don't realize how big a trailer is

until you're actually standing up next to it.

They're built to be strong.

They're built to carry thousands of pounds of cargo,

and now you're cutting them with a saw,

so it's pretty nerve-racking.

So you want me to start here?

Yeah, no, yeah, keep going exactly that same line

all the way around.

That nervousness is what keeps you safe.

We're running outta height here.

Yeah.

Anyone taller than me?

I think we're the same height, no?

[chuckles]

[Cass] I only was able to cut so far.

I'm only 5'4".

I'm not a tall person.

We're working in stages here,

based off of height requirements.

Yeah, there you go.

We'll grab him, fold it inside.

Yeah, 'cause the rivets will break right off.

We're gonna bring the landoll in

to put the back of the trailer onto it,

get rid of that.

[Narrator] As they load up

the rear section of the trailer...

Perfect.

That's beautiful.

[Narrator] there's one more job

for the crew's newest member.

- [Andrew] Cass? - [Cass] Yeah?

[Andrew] Wanna grab the sawzall?

This top roof's going to cut in three sections.

[Cass] Three sections.

[saw buzzing]

Hey! I think we're through.

Look at that!

Just like that.

[Cass] It's a big learning day,

it's my first wreck with the crew.

I'm so happy to be a part of it.

I've got the wreck bug.

I can't wait for my next wreck.

[Narrator] It's a milestone for Cass,

growing into a new role

on a team that's still growing itself.

[Bill] You gotta start somewhere,

but you know what...

You learn. You learn.

Only thing left now is a bit of cleanup,

and we're outta here.

[Andrew] It's gratifying

seeing my team pull together as they did.

We had people pretty much scattered all over the place,

and everybody was doing their job to the T.

I felt very proud of my team.
