A brutal winter front
is moving across

the eastern edge of Ontario...

..heading straight
into the nation's biggest city

and busiest roads.

(SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC)

Oh, boy.

A whole tonne of vehicles
in ditches,

about a 100 crashes already
in the last 24 hours or so.

Sergeant Kerry Schmidt
is fighting through a busy morning.

Drivers just going too fast
for conditions.

Anyone who doesn't actually
have to be out on the roads,

wait until the system has passed,

wait until all the highways
have been ploughed clear,

and then, you know,

make your way out
to where you need to go.

On the other side of the city,

traffic is bottlenecking
on the QEW in Burlington.

A sudden jack-knife has caused
a multiple chain-reaction crash

and a close call
for one member of the OPP.

Harry,
how are we doing there, fella?

Constable Kevin Westhead
is working to manage the scene

before the distraction can lead
to another crash.

A tractor-trailer
suddenly jack-knifed,

which caused one vehicle
to veer across,

narrowly missing being crushed
by the commercial motor vehicle,

and then the cruiser subsequently
also striking the tractor-trailer.

What are we looking
at for re-opening?

What do you think?
Uh, maybe... half hour?

With these type of collisions,

it's inevitable that people,
they want to have a peek,

and this can often lead
to secondary collisions.

Can I get you to watch
and make sure everything's OK?

We get the road open
as quickly as possible.

to back under

and get the trailer straightened
out and whatnot.

As two tow companies work
to clear the scene,

..but even
as the storm starts to fade,

its effects will linger on the road.

On snow days like this,

there are going to be some
more significant collisions.

I'm sure we'll be dealing
with lots more today.

The storm is finished,
the road's been ploughed,

everyone's thinking
it's all back to business,

back to normal, well, it's not.

25mi east up on the 401,

Kerry is rolling up
to another scene.

We're just heading over now
to a multi-vehicle collision,

Highway 401 eastbound
in the express lanes at Eglington.

We've got at least
three transport trucks involved...

and this is where traffic suddenly
comes to a grinding halt.

Massive congestion
on the 401 eastbound all the way

to Dixie Road right south
of Pearson Airport.

Oh, there they are.

It's a huge mess.

The one truck up there smashed
into the back of this Landoll,

and then that truck went
into the back of the other truck.

Fortunately, no injuries,
but really preventable.

The roads are slippery.

We just all need to be able
to drive our vehicle

in a manner that allows us to stop
and not get caught in a position

where we don't have an escape.

While the crew works
to quickly clear the road...

Looks like they are getting ready
to roll out of here.

..Kerry spots a new hazard.

As they pull the vehicle away,

there's debris
underneath the vehicle

that they weren't able to assess.

Are they sweeping that up?

No, they think they got
to come back.

Let's just clean it up ourselves.

I just grabbed some
of the debris that was there...

Let's just kick this
all off the highway here.

Not ideal, but the fortunate thing
is we do have the MTO behind us

as blocker trucks
that are protecting the area.

Let's just clear it.

We got that thrown off
on the shoulder.

That'll get picked up later on,
but in the meantime,

we need to get these highways open.

We got traffic moving now,

so, that area should be relieved
from its pressure pretty soon.

125mi west,

the 401 in London has been spared
the effects of the eastern storm...

..but on the east side of the city,

traffic is facing a major slowdown.

We'll put a two-part here...

..and just a single to the front.

..and it's up
to the Ross Services crew

to get the road back open.

Want to get
a couple drag lines on it,

see if I can hold it?

Mike Ross and Austin Hutchinson
have been waiting and planning.

We've been on hold
for the last couple hours here.

The vacuum truck collided
with a car in the intersection.

The car's driver did not survive.

Anytime you're
at an accident like this,

you feel bad.

Your heart goes out to the family,

and all the people
that are affected.

Behind the dip tank?

it's a first-time experience.

Someone has lost a loved one,

and it's just not something that you
really want to be doing every day.

Run that through the ratchet,

and then you're gonna hook
hook-to-hook and pull 'er tight.

The terrain and the need
to preserve evidence

will make a tough job even tougher.

I think the turret

The ditch that we're dealing here
with here is a pretty steep ditch.

We're trying to be as gentle
as possible and to not disturb

as much as we can just
so that the police can continue

with their investigation.

It's that fuel tank
on the floor ground

we just gotta watch.

They need to keep it intact
as they pull the truck upright.

We're going to have
to be pretty gentle with it just

to make sure we don't make
a bigger mess here.

I'm gonna snug up these lines...

..so just watch yourself
for a minute.

I'm going to try to slide
the front end of this truck

over a little bit closer
to the shoulder of the road,

and that way,
when it does come over,

it's a little bit further up,

and hopefully the fuel tank
will clear the ditch.

I'm just snuggling up here.

But working on this narrow road,
they risk running out of space.

The only thing is whether
or not that bumper's

gonna land on your leg.

It's gonna be damn close
to your truck, man.

There's not going
to be a whole lot of room here.

Um, it's going to be a tight squeeze
when we bring this thing over.

Vac trucks are real heavy.

We don't know
what's in the back of them,

if they're loaded or empty,
till you get a little feel of it.

..and the front of the vacuum truck
is still down in the ditch.

Got to pull ahead a little bit.

We can't just hook
onto the back of it and pull it up,

'cause we've got our fuel tanks
that are gonna

hit the ground and will rupture.

Pull some more cable there, Finch.

So, they'll need to raise
it clear of the ground.

Oh, we might be alright.

Austin will lift the front of
the truck up and over the road,

then set it down directly
onto his rotator's underlift.

OK...

Let's give 'er a whirl here, boys.

It's a precision move.

Do this side a little bit,
too, Austin.

We're trying to keep
this thing as low as possible

just so that we're not hovering
10-20ft above the ditch,

but we need to be high enough
that we're going to clear

the ditch with the fuel tank.

Try and keep the front end
a little lower, OK?

Yep.

That way, if anything does go wrong,

we're not picking ourself up
out of the ditch.

Start getting it in,
that's high enough.

Boom up and in.

Phase one is complete.

Get 'er down some, get 'er down.

Now, they need to wrangle
the truck onto the underlift

in very tight quarters.

There's so much more
to learn in this industry,

in heavy recovery.

I'm determined and focused
on getting into heavy recovery.

It's always been a dream of mine
since I've been six years old.

This farm has been around
for 177 years.

I am the sixth generation born
and raised on the farm.

The farm work has really formed me

into the individual I am now that,
if there's a job to do,

we get the job done,

and we don't stop
until we get it done.

Some days
I miss working on the farm,

but in the tow industry,
it's like the farm.

Something different every day.

He's eager to learn.

Not everybody gets
these kind of opportunities

to come out
and see this kind of a job,

so, it's a good experience for him.

..and that experience includes
running the vac truck's brakes

while Austin wrestles
the truck into position.

Take the brakes off,

and just get ready to use
the foot pedal if you need to, OK?

We'll take the brakes off,

and the front end will come
around a lot nicer for us.

It definitely takes
a little bit of finesse

and skill to be able
to land something like that.

It's nice when you're able
to set it right on your wheel lift.

right where it needs to be
to tow it away from the scene.

Tied down, we're heading on home.

The next morning, 310mi east...

..roads are clear of snow,

but the westbound 401 is empty.

All traffic approaching Johnstown
is detouring off the highway.

The semi was hauling
a load of copper coils

when another vehicle cut it off.

The semi swerved and flipped.

Then a second truck drove
right through it.

Get it cleaned up as fast as we can.

Now, John Campbell is staring down
a heavy clean-up job.

We got a transport on its side,
it's total carnage.

There's nothing left of the trailer.

There's copper all over the place.

The bottom of the trailer
was upside-down

with nobody on it anymore.

It exploded, just disintegrated,
turned into shrapnel.

So, as you can see
there's not much left of it.

It looked like a bunch of spaghetti.

So, between my tow trucks
and the backhoe,

I got two floats here.

We should be out of here
in a couple of hours

if all goes well.

The truck is in pretty bad shape,
as you can see,

so, we're basically just gonna flip
the truck back over on its wheels,

and tow the truck away.

Soon as they get
the dump truck out of the way,

we're gonna back
Johnny's truck up to it,

and float 'er down.

John's son Johnny Marsh
will remove the tractor...

He's backing the rig up here.

Golden!

Oh, it's gonna be a fun one!

..and with five miles
of highway shut down,

he'll have to move fast.

I'm going
to put this in free-wheel,

get a cable and snatch block
to the bottom of the truck,

and then hook that tractor
and flip 'er back over,

and get it the hell out of here.

on the leaf spring there, Dad.

Yeah, sounds good.

Just so it's out of the way.

OK, I'm gonna pull ahead
and take up the slack.

Been working
with him almost 15 years now,

and it's got its ups and downs.

The secondary roads
are overflowing with traffic.

Westbound traffic on the 401
is still crawling

toward the detour route...

..and the overturned tractor
is staying firmly overturned.

How's it going? Where are we at?

We're looking at about an hour.

You're always worried
that because of this closure,

more accidents could occur,

and it's also the life blood
of the country

is getting the highway going again,
in a safe way.

OK!

Well, they want it open
as quick as they can, obviously.

We'll do our best, and get
out of here as soon as we can.

But John Campbell and crew can't
get the tires to grab the pavement.

When they're on the asphalt,
it's pretty slippery.

Sometimes they don't want to flip.

Hold up, John.
You gotta put one on the back, son.

Just to give it a little extra.

It had nothing to really grip onto.

It just wanted to steer around
to face my truck

instead of actually rolling over.

You want a chain?

Nope just a hook.

So, with pressure mounting,

they're betting
on more pulling power

on the back end...

..to help wrench the truck upright.

So, his father turns to the only
other heavy equipment on scene.

So, I have a plan.

I want to pull up
beside the trailer,

grab the back of it.

If you could bring this over,
hook the front of the trailer,

just so it doesn't go back down
into the ditch.

It's probably not
what some of the other guys do.

A lot of people would have waited
for another heavy to come.

The idea is get
the highway open safely

as quick as you can.

155mi west...

..one driver has taken
a sudden detour

off the 401 in Newtonville.

A tanker loaded with 80,000 pounds
of cement powder

has ploughed hard into the trees.

Yeah, there's a major amount
of damage here.

And a major amount of work
for B and G's Bill Wright.

We've got flat tires, bent axles,

we're into a tree at the nose here.

It's not going to be an easy one,
for sure.

This thing is so far down
through the ditch.

We've got all kinds of elements
against us.

The soft snow,
we've got missing tires...

Let's find this ditch.

Right there.

It starts dropping right here.

For Russ Kroon,

the biggest worry
is the combination of cargo

and the 200ft trip to the highway.

It's a cement dust powder.

If we happen to pull the trailer
or the truck the wrong way

and rip it on a stump,

the clean-up itself
is going to be just phenomenal.

That's gonna be a very heavy pull.

So, Bill wants to avoid risking
the long pull

and head the other way,

to a much closer side road.

Lo and behold, we've got a driveway
that lines up with us pretty good.

Now, it's small, but I think maybe
that might be the answer here.

Yeah, right here.

..and today,
without his sons on scene,

Bill is relying
on a largely seasoned crew.

We're all in our 50s, and, you know,

the young guys
are off doing their thing,

and, you know, your hands,
and your back, and your feet,

they just aren't what they were
when you were 30.

We can just back
the rotator in right there...

Right there as far as we can.

..and we can run a single line
out to the front end of that.

Yeah.

I'm going to be putting
a lot of skills to the test today,

stuff that I've learned over
the last 100 years.

The first priority
is to get the truck off the tree,

and we're going to start pulling
and seeing how everything holds up.

We gotta cut that fence
somewhere over here.

See if we can get
that all off already.

That limb there, we got to take off.

We want to try to get
this wrapped up before dark.

We got the equipment rolling,

we're going to be going
at it as hard as we can

before the sun goes down
and the cold temperatures roll in.

It's quite a pull
to get that off the tree.

It's separating the frame rails.

I think it's pulling
the frame rails apart.

Well, we can't get it off the tree.

we got a real problem on our hands.

into the tree is the problem.

On the 401 east of Brockville...

..a 5-mile stretch has been empty
for over three hours

while traffic funnels
off the highway.

The road can't reopen
until John Campbell

removes the remains of the trailer,

with just a single wrecker.

I'm gonna spin around,
stick my boom way out,

and pick this puppy up...

and then Lawrence
will pick the front,

and he'll back under it
with a float,

and that's our plan.

John will lift one end
of the trailer

while a one-ton tow truck
and the excavator lift the other,

allowing a flat deck
to slide underneath.

The plan will eliminate the need
to wait for a second wrecker.

Good!

Down... back that way a bit.

..but the excavator isn't designed
for this kind of work.

There's a rail
there you got a hold of.

You want me to put
a chain on it, too?

A lot of people would have waited
for another heavy to come.

Sometimes you push your trucks maybe
a little farther than you'd like to,

but you gotta do
what you gotta do sometimes.

We're just going
to bear trap it down to the trailer,

with the truck for the coils.

Every once in a while,
that mastermind

of his does come through,

and hopefully it will rub off
on me someday.

My dad's taught me,
do what we can with what we have,

whether it be a small truck,
a service truck, or a flatbed,

just do what we can to get
everything done

to get the highways opened up again.

Things went pretty smooth,
all in all.

..Bill and his veteran crew
have come up with a plan

to separate truck from tree.

We're actually going
to take a chop saw,

and we're going to cut
the first foot of frame rail

off the truck

so, that we can pull
the truck sideways off the tree.

Try it, Rusty.
Let's just see what moves.

It ain't happening.

He's got a good hard pull on it.

It's still not coming.

Yeah.
Give that a bump.

With the winter sun starting to set,

Bill needs to get past
this first step.

This could be a real long night
if we don't get this Bobcat

to give us that little bit
of assistance that we need.

Every now and then, you gotta get
a little bit rough, right?

Any time you have
to abuse your equipment,

it doesn't sit well with you,

but sometimes you gotta do
what you gotta do.

We're good now.

We're going to run
what they call a four-part line,

which means it gives us
in the ballpark

of 80,000 pounds of pull.

We're just making sure
we rig for enough

that we're not overloading
any of our equipment.

You gotta bring that one.

We're pulling
120,000-plus pounds up a hill.

A single line is not going to work.

It's just something
that has to be done.

Their goal is to pull forward,

gaining room to separate
the damaged tractor

and hook up their own...

that this one is going to work.

You can see on the passenger side,

I'm just gonna walk around
and have a quick look here.

They haven't moved it much...

Think you could get a tractor
in here now to hook it onto that?

Yeah, I think we're not far from it.

..but it looks like enough...

Let's lumber up the dolly legs,
two pieces on each side.

..if they can squeeze
in and hook up.

There's no space
for the rotator to get in there,

so, we're out of options.

So, what's the plan?

Well, I think
we should get a 35-tonne here,

hook the 35-tonne on the front
of it, and get it out of here...

There's no truck on scene
small enough to do the job.

..and then we'll bring our tractor.

We'll get hooked onto it
with our tractor, right?

So, we need the 35
and the blue tractor here.

It's a little bit complicated
because it's so tight right here,

but we're kind of in that spot
where we have no choice.

We're in a bit
of a time crunch right now.

It's late afternoon.

We want to try to get this out
before dark if we can.

I'll call Al to see
if he can go get the 35.

We're going to get
my brother Al to come down

and give us a little assistance
getting this thing out of there.

Can he go to my yard and grab
my 35-tonne and bring it out to us?

In a clearing off
the 401 in Newtonville...

Here she comes.

..Al Wright has arrived
with the smaller wrecker

to tow away the separated tractor.

So, we're going to get rid
of the tractor now.

35-tonne's here.

If you back in here with the 35
and hook right onto this,

then just get it out
on the street and drop it.

Then we're going to hook
my blue tractor to this so it rolls.

The 35-tonne
is smaller than the rotator,

but it still won't be
an easy fit through the trees.

We're giving up the challenges
of the highway and the traffic,

but we're gaining
a whole lot of challenges

to get out through this field.

Let's do this thing.

There wasn't much room
to get the truck in whatsoever.

I had to really pay attention

to what I was doing
putting it in there.

You are almost in the ditch.

We have a ditch
on both sides of the truck,

and we have sharp
culverts sticking out.

You're right on the edge there.

I couldn't get my front end
over anymore at all.

Al's in position to hook up...

She'll come up against the frame.

to weave his way back out

with the tractor in tow.

We're very relieved
we got the tractor out of the way,

but we've still got
the biggest challenge ahead of us.

That's not going to go straight out.

The tractor was just a dry run
for the much bigger,

much heavier trailer.

Now, it's the real hard part,

trying to get this trailer out
between the maze of all the trees.

As they roll
the replacement tractor into place,

darkness is setting in.

Keep going, keep going straight.

She's locked.

The tractor will help
the trailer roll and steer

as the rotator pulls
them out together.

This gives us all the wheels
and tires on the trailer

will now roll free.

We can get a tow truck on the front
of our tractor

and winch it out through the hole.

We're losing our light quickly.

We've got to get this done
and get out of here.

I'm gonna get the 'tator set up.

And Bill has an idea
that could save the crew vital time.

If we didn't have the tree there,
I would almost say yeah.

The tree is going to be the problem.

Well, Bill is going
to try a Hail Mary move here.

We're gonna try and drive
this truck outta here

with no assistance
from anything else.

Air up the trailer.

I'm going to try and move that.

If I'm successful
at driving this out of here

and not winching it out of here,

we're going to be able
to get out of here before dark.

It's going to save us a lot of time.

Bill will need to rely
on his decades of experience

behind the wheel.

tractor-trailer

through a 10ft opening
around all the trees...

and drive ahead a little bit.

..it's something
that I would never attempt on my,

on my own.
