So, I got a plan in mind,

BARRY: If I start yellin', something's wrong.

..battles the bulge.

BARRY: Hold on, Dunc!

She's tipping!

On the highways of southern Ontario,

a long winter has overstayed its welcome...

..blasting the last storm of the season right towards Toronto.

LISA: We're already starting to see some of those snowflakes.

Now, this snow is expected to get a lot heavier.

Across the city,

maintenance crews are gearing up for a lengthy fight...

DRIVER: Looks like it's gonna be a long afternoon and evening.

..and so is Sergeant Kerry Schmidt.

There's a big system coming in.

We're talking about 25 centimetres or more.

Plows and salters have been out already,

but we need all the drivers to be ready as well,

and what that means is avoid unnecessary travel.

If you do need to be out there, keep your eyes open.

As evening shifts into night, problems on the road are mounting.

KERRY: We've got about crashes on the go right now.

Snow-covered highways all across the GTA,

barely seeing the lane markings.

As Kerry heads east through the city on the 401...

..the latest call comes in, dead ahead at Leslie Street.

We have a call for a truck

that lost a set of wheels right in the heart of Toronto.

This is a bit of a tricky situation here.

Wow!

Oh, yeah, that's not going anywhere.

Wow, yeah, you can see the axle's snapped right off.

DRIVER: Centre laneway going west.

Hit a pothole,

and she blew the tyres off the far side of the trailer.

Broke both axles out of 'er.

Just crazy.

KERRY: Typically in a situation like this,

where you have a broken-down trailer,

you haul it away, and you open the highway.

But tonight, the situation...

(COW MOOS)

..is far from typical.

KERRY: Those poor guys in here.

We need to get the cattle off the highway.

On North America's busiest highway,

closure...is not an option.

KERRY: Highway 401 westbound express lanes just past Leslie.

We've got a broken-down cattle-hauler trailer.

As Kerry updates the public on social media...

KERRY: Obviously, this is gonna make for a challenging recovery.

..he can see that the trailer can't be moved until the cargo is.

KERRY: So, what we need to do right now

is get the cattle off that broken-down trailer

and onto a replacement trailer.

Holy crap, eh?

Help has just arrived...

Sonny Subra from Prompt,

and he's already feeling the pressure.

I never done an animal trailer,

so this is the first time I'm doing it.

It's really a messy weather.

It's slippery and iced up all over the highway.

We are just waiting for another trailer

to offload all the cows,

and then we're gonna move it off the highway.

Once the trailer is empty, it will be up to Sonny to clear it,

but with the missing wheels, that won't be a simple tow.

So, what's going to happen,

after they remove the cows from the trailer,

we can't put a dolly.

We can't move this trailer any other way,

so, we need help.

We need a float.

He'll need to load the damaged hauler

onto the float trailer the minute the cows are transferred,

to ease the growing backup.

If we make any mistakes, it's gonna take a lot of time,

so, we will do it very carefully and the right way.

OK, I am ready.

It's been a winter of hard work for Sonny.

This is a start-up company.

It's really a small company.

Moving to Prompt

and pushing to establish the new heavy division...

Now, I'm cruising around.

I need a more customer here.

..he's fought for every possible job.

Heavy on scene.

Tonight, on the 401, in the heart of the city,

all eyes are on him.

The people, like, going side by, they sometimes honk.

"What the hell you guys doing?" you know?

We can't move without offloading these cows.

KERRY: Oh, here it is.

There's the trailer.

As soon as they get this highway shut down,

they'll be able to get the cattle all offloaded.

Obviously, these guys have been sitting here now for a little while.

The transfer crew needs to work fast...

DRIVER: Whoa, Dave!

..but carefully.

KERRY: We've had them get loose in the past,

and it certainly is troubling when we have first responders

and crews trying to clean up this mess.

If we got loose the cow on the road,

it's gonna run all over the highway.

DRIVER: Come on, girls, let's go!

KERRY: Make sure that no cattle get free.

You never know what you're gonna see

on the highways here.

Obviously, those guys know what they're doing.

Those cows were offloaded from one trailer

to the other one in just a matter of minutes.

..but even those minutes have stretched the backup,

blocking the plows from clearing miles of highway.

OK, back up. Let's go.

Sonny's time is running out.

We'll deal with this trailer.

I'm gonna lift it up with my boom.

CHARON: OK, go.

OK. Go!

Sonny must guide the trailer into place...

MAN: Not much room on the other side.

..without tipping it over the side.

MAN: Sonny, can you pull the boom in?

In.

The highway's already been closed

for more than three hours right now

because of all the transport and everything,

so, I am kind of nervous, like, I don't want to make a mistake.

MAN: Pull it. Pull it. Pull it.

OK.

It's gonna slide all the way, man.

That's good.

This side is OK.

KERRY: Looks like we're almost ready to roll.

We'll get the plows through here, and get things open.

OK, yeah.

KERRY: OK.

Ice all over the place.

But as the driver tries to roll away...

Keep going, keep going.

It's going backwards.

Snow plow didn't come through the 401 westbound express,

so, everything iced up.

KERRY: That's not good.

We have the snow plows back at the closure

waiting to come through,

and now we have one more delay.

Keep going, keep going.

Whoa!

Stop!

On the 401 at Leslie,

the westbound express is backing up deep into Scarborough.

Keep going! Keep going!

The road won't open

until the float tractor can clear the scene.

Everything iced up.

It's going backwards.

There's no traction on the icy road,

and plows and salters are stuck behind the closure.

KERRY: If the plows can't do their job,

the highways are gonna be in even worse shape.

So, Sonny takes charge.

Somebody has to pull it out.

We've got to do it.

Want me to bring my heavy?

Let me take my heavy and pull him out.

There's not enough heavy load on the rear axles,

because it's basically an empty trailer,

so, like, it's not enough load to grab the traction on the road.

OK!

Put on the axle, OK?

MAN: Go, go!

My wrecker is a 50-ton wrecker,

so, it has enough traction.

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

KERRY: It should be cleared off shortly,

and we'll get all lanes reopened in the next couple of minutes.

OK.

Again, we did a good job.

This has been good.

I gotta go, I gotta go for another wreck!

That's given me that little bit of boost,

like I can do more job on the 401.

KERRY: We're all doing this for the ultimate goal

of getting the highways reopened, and really,

this is a team effort, getting the job done,

having the equipment in here,

and getting it done as quickly as they can.

Kerry Schmidt giving a good,

positive feedback on the recovery and stuff,

that's made me proud, and that's, like,

given me some boost that I can do more jobs like this.

After a winter facing big challenges,

Sonny is ready for the next one.

250mi to the east,

another late-winter front is bearing down on Cornwall...

..but even before the snow arrives,

one driver is having a bad night on the 401.

Is your pump in?

Duncan Cooper and the crew

from Cornwall Towing are on scene to get the semi upright.

I don't know what happened, but he come right across the road,

did a 180, and now he's blocking the fast lane in the westbound.

The eastbound transport lost control,

veering through the median,

and slamming down on the westbound side of the highway.

It looked like a twisted pop can.

The tractor was right up on the road,

the front part is blocking traffic, so we have to deal with this now.

We're gonna pull the tractor out, upright it.

Clearing the lane is only one of the reasons

Duncan wants to move fast.

The rain's supposed to change to snow, they say.

We knew there was a weather system moving in,

and it was moving in fast,

so, we wanted to clear what we could,

get the road open, and get out of there.

First, Duncan needs to separate the tractor

and remove it from the lane.

He's relying on Mike McPhee...

Did you get the pin pulled?

..and Barry Wagner.

BARRY: It's never easy to unhook a truck

when it's twisted a little bit and thrown on its side.

Grab the yellow line.

Bring 'er down some?

Oh...

Want me to get ya a milk crate?

Give it a little bit of a tug.

I think the trailer is twisting on the pin.

This should be a relatively simple thing.

Go grab the sledgehammer.

it popped open.

It was like, "Oh, thank God.

"Let's go."

So, we're gonna pull the tractor ahead,

then we're gonna upright it right where it's sitting.

Pull it over!

BARRY: Give 'er a little love.

Here she comes.

MATT: Whoo-hoo!

Good!

But it's the loaded trailer that will be the real challenge.

It's actually boxes of rolls of paper towel.

Right to the top.

We may attempt to upright this loaded.

The first step, just pulling the trailer closer to the road...

OK!

Try it.

Keep going.

..but with 30,000 pounds inside the heavily compromised semi,

even this small pull could tear the trailer wide open.

She heavy, Mikey?

She's coming.

As they coax it to the edge...

Here comes that rain.

The rain is supposed to change to snow, they say.

The forecast was for a storm system to start moving in.

..with the storm hitting, and the lane clear of the tractor...

Huh...

I don't know.

..Duncan makes a call.

Good enough!

Good enough.

We have to wait till the storm blows over.

The trailer is staying in the ditch, We'll be back in the morning.

Tractor's coming with us.

I have no problem working in the snow and the weather,

that's what we do, but there is a safety issue.

There's moving traffic one lane over just a few feet away from us,

and when it starts getting snowy and icy,

it could get dangerous.

Good!

So, for tonight, they're waiting out the weather.

We'll be back in the morning for the trailer and the load.

As morning breaks

over the south-western tip of the province...

..a night of bad weather has left a trail

of destruction along Highway 402.

You loaded with anything?

Gary Vandenheuvel has been hard at work

since long before the sun came up...

We've got a lot going on.

We've got trucks everywhere.

It's just one of those days

where everybody's kind of spread out.

Right on the 402 right now,

I've got a couple of tractor-trailers in here,

got the other guys working on a rollover this morning.

..and the forecast says more heavy squalls are due to blow in.

You can see the wind starting to pick up again here.

Just 2.5mi down the road...

Ay-yi-yi!

..Gary's son Collin is already sizing up a much bigger job.

It rolled pretty hard going into the ditch.

There's a bit of a bow here,

so that's a good sign that the structure in the front

of this trailer is compromised.

Having damage in that top corner is definitely a red flag.

With winter winding down,

Collin needs to show his father how far he's come.

OK.

This is essentially my final exam, I guess you could say.

I gotta show him that I'm able to pass,

and he can toss the torch over to me,

and he can take a step back.

There's something right there.

It's gonna be fun.

He needs to see exactly what's pushing against that roof.

Racks.

OK.

It's all automotive racks,

big steel racks to hold the auto parts,

so, they do have a bit of weight to them.

They're all empty. OK.

But with no cargo in the racks,

he's willing to take a chance and skip an offload...

So, we'll be able to roll this thing over loaded.

We're just gonna have to strap the hell out of it.

..but before he can even get started...

Holy crap, this is windy.

The wind's starting to pick up.

You can see it blowing across the fields.

It only takes a minute,

and we can get some whiteout conditions here.

We got some lake effect moving in here now.

Just east of Sarnia, on Highway 402...

..with the wind bearing down, Collin's backup has finally arrived.

OK, what do we got, bud?

It's loaded with empty racks.

The damage is up in the front of the trailer

where it went in really hard.

OK, so what's the plan?

I want to drag it up closer to the shoulder here,

and then from there we can roll it.

Collin's looked things through,

and he's actually got a plan formulated

to how we're gonna upright this thing,

and it's actually bang-on.

With Gary planning to spend less time working recoveries,

he needs to see initiative from every member of his crew...

Let's do it. Yeah, sounds good.

It's nice that my dad has that confidence

that I can do this.

and we'll see what the back of the box is doing.

So, I got a plan in mind how I kinda want to rig,

(GRUNTS) So, basically I join them.

..Sonny is taking a rare morning off from the road,

but he's still facing a big job.

Getting ready for the big day.

With his new baby due any day, Sonny needs to be ready.

Hooking up a wreck, it's pretty easy because I know what I'm doing.

hard work here and on the highway, but all for a reason.

So, Duncan and crew are heading back to finish last night's job...

the job is already looking tougher...

I think this trailer is gonna give us trouble.

A lot of breaks and splits in it.

The trailer was severely compromised.

I wasn't even sure

if it was gonna come up in one piece.

Everything's split apart.

It was a gamble.

We're gonna pull the front of the trailer

over a little bit first,

and then we'll get ready for an upright.

There it goes, there it goes!

Look at the trailer wall.

It just kinked right in, eh?

Barry!

We're gonna have to shovel some of that snow out of the way.

I'll grab a shovel.

The trailer's facing the wrong direction,

so, we're gonna have to stand it up,

and then try and turn it around and bring it out

the correct way onto the highway.

We'll back his truck up,

close to the front, and I should be able to get it right now.

OK.

..and to spin it with minimal impact on traffic,

Duncan's come up with an unconventional plan.

We're gonna get the dolly off the back of the truck,

put it under the fifth wheel so we can pivot the trailer on it.

So, we use an old trick, put the dollies on it,

use that to pivot the front of the trailer right around.

OK!

With the rotating wheels on the front,

they'll upright the trailer,

and then turn it sharply around as they pull it up to the road.

OK, give me some winch.

If it works out the way you want it,

you can move the front of that trailer anywhere you like,

'cause you only have a short little dolly,

and you can winch it whatever way.

Unhook it?

BARRY: Nope, just let him pick it up first.

OK.

But first, they have to get the wheels in place.

Bring your deck ahead.

Put 'er back down as you pull the truck ahead.

We're gonna hold it against the trailer so it locks the pins.

BARRY: Is it touching?

You gotta bring it down...

Let 'er come...

Oh! BARRY: Pick 'er again.

Try 'er again.

BARRY: Nope. Just don't want to lock, eh?

We're trying to drop that dolly onto the king pin,

and it just wouldn't cooperate.

It was about six inches too short.

BARRY: I'm gonna put the block in here, Dunc.

I don't know if it's gonna work, but...

Suck that up lightly.

Right there.

Pass the pin down a bit more.

There! Whoa!

I can tell how this whole job's gonna go right from the start.

It's gonna be a mess.

On the 401, at the northern edge of Cornwall...

..Duncan's dolly plan is refusing to come together.

This is a mess.

Trying to get the dolly clipped in place,

and it was just difficult.

The jaws are not opening.

BARRY: They're all ice.

Frozen?

BARRY: Jaws are froze shut.

That's why it's not going on for us.

Where'd the hammer go again?

BARRY: It had a bunch of accumulated ice inside the jaws,

and it wouldn't let the jaws lock themselves properly.

Hit it!

OK, let's try it again.

This way. BARRY: Push.

Right there, straight down.

That's good that way, yeah.

BARRY: Bring 'er down!

I heard a click.

Yeah, but it didn't lock.

She didn't lock.

There, she's locked!

About time.

Pain in the ass!

Now, they have to lift the compromised trailer upright,

with 30,000 pounds inside.

So, we're gonna start strapping as many straps

as we can around the trailer, get it ready to do a lift.

OK.

What do you want to do here, Duncan?

We use this highline...

BARRY: Go over the top? ...with a WreckMaster strap.

I'm going to use all four of my lines,

and I'm gonna put a strap to every single thing

that I can possibly get a strap onto.

That's done.

I'm hoping it holds together, but it's...

it's pretty badly damaged.

This is where the problem's gonna start, right here.

It's already pulled away from the bottom.

It's gonna be a gamble.

The trailer is severely compromised.

Hook your hook in,

and we'll start guiding it down the trailer,

and over the dolly legs and everything else.

We've got a 50-50 chance here.

..Gary and crew are finishing the rigging

for their own compromised trailer.

Just go one, two, and three, tighten 'em up.

Always worried about a corner like this.

This trailer's been hit pretty hard.

It's opened up pretty good.

Hoping that it stays together.

If they're going to have any chance to keep it intact,

Collin and Glen will need to work in unison.

so, just be careful that you're gonna have enough room.

There's a little bit of pressure here to make sure

this is being done right.

The new rotator's a little bit faster than this older rotator.

and the front of that trailer to catch up

to where the rear of the trailer was.

That way, then we're nice and squared with the road.

BARRY: Gotta come right to the bottom!

OK, stop!

..the crew has wrapped the trailer in straps,

gambling that they can hold it together to survive the upright.

BARRY: That strap good?

Now, they have to roll the dice.

BARRY: It's almost test time.

Worst-case scenario, it breaks, we have to unload it.

I have tried everything I can here to avoid that problem.

If it rips open, we're gonna be out there all day,

all night, picking up this load.

Is she gonna hold together, or is she gonna come apart?

Tighten it up!

We're gonna let him do the leading.

Wow.

It's pretty ugly.

As we're lifting, it's creaking,

and everything is moving and bowing out.

There's no way this is gonna hold together.

Watch yourself, Barry.

Not too fast.

Not too much!

BARRY: Whoa, whoa, don't go too fast.

Not too much!

On the 401,

the Cornwall crew is about to find out if Duncan's gamble...

BARRY: Not too much, not too much.

Let him keep it tight.

..will pay off.

I can see the underneath of the trailer.

I'm like, "There's no way this is gonna hold together."

BARRY: Keep 'er coming. Here we go.

She's tipping, she's tipping!

Tighten 'er up a bit more.

OK.

Did it hold together?

(GROANS)

I was absolutely astonished it did not break in half.

How does the wall on the other side look?

Came out a lot better than we thought.

Everything stayed intact,

so, we can pull it off the road in one piece.

But getting it upright was just step one.

We're not out yet.

We have to get this thing up onto the road,

and into the right direction.

We'll unchain the dolly... BARRY: Yup.

..so, the dolly can pivot.

Maybe we'll hook my drag into it,

and pull it up a little bit more, OK?

Duncan's plan hinges on using the dolly wheels

to steer the trailer almost 180 degrees

as they bring it to the road.

BARRY: OK, I'll tighten the top up, leave the bottom loose.

OK, just a bit. Not too much.

Is it too tight?

Never mind.

You're good.

Good now!

They need the plan to work to keep a lane of traffic flowing.

The whole game plan was to get it out of the ditch

without having to shut down the highway.

So, the yellow one, we're gonna hook to the red strap,

and that red one, it'll go to the pintle hook.

So, we're gonna use this winch line here,

gonna snatch block it low,

into the pintle hook of the dolly.

It should pivot on those wheels.

As Duncan steers the trailer around,

Barry will try to hold it upright

and prevent it from tipping back down the ditch.

BARRY: I'll just keep 'er tight,

and if I start yelling, something's wrong.

OK.

OK? BARRY: Yup!

As the trailer spins around, it's quickly running out of space...

You're awful close to the top, Duncan!

OK, hold on.

BARRY: Once we got it almost up, we were sitting at an awful angle.

I can move ahead 20ft or so,

and we can bring it around to that next point.

..but straddling the bank mid-pull...

OK, I'll just go ahead slow...

..the trailer is leaning dangerously.

We don't have all day!

..and as they set up for the next pull,

they'll be working in the dark.

I wanna get this thing out of here,

and get off the road as soon as possible.

Are you ready, Mike?

Whenever you're ready.

In low light next to a live lane,

finishing this job just became even more urgent.

It's too dangerous on the 401 at night.

Gentle, just gentle, gentle.

As Duncan hits the 90-degree point...

Come on!

It was tight, tight, tight.

..he's all out of room.

That trailer refuses to back up, eh?

That trailer was gonna come out onto the lane that's still live.

Just keep it snug, OK?

I didn't have much space to get it into the right direction.

BARRY: Hold on, Dunc!

OK, hold on.

Hold on, Al!

If we pull a little too far,

we put the nose of that trailer out in traffic,

somebody could hit it.

You're right on the white line now!

We had to make a decision.

Shut the highway down for a few minutes.

(CHUCKLES) How you doing?

Good, good.

OK, I'm rigged up right now.

I'm gonna need you to shut the lane down for about two minutes.

Soon as I see you in the middle of the road,

I know we're good, OK?

OK, thank you.

OK, he's gonna go around...

Yeah? ..and once he does that...

Then we pull. It's game time.
