An hour before sunrise...

..traffic around Toronto is
still light, and moving well.

But on the 401, trouble can erupt...

..in an instant.

(SIREN)

We just got a call for a
multi-vehicle collision

Highway 401 eastbound.

Sergeant Kerry Schmidt answers the
call

50 miles
to the east, in Newcastle.

This collision appears to
be three commercial vehicles.

We have one confirmed fatality.

A tragic situation we're dealing
with here right now,

and a major scene.

401 eastbound is blocked at Mill
Street,

and this is just as the morning
commuters

are heading
out and heading into the city.

The detour routes just don't have
the capacity

to accommodate that kind of traffic
volume.

As Kerry approaches...

Orillia, five, tango, zero, zero,
seven, you can mark me on scene.

..daylight reveals the full picture.

Several tractor trailers
involved,

so expect this to be ongoing for
quite some time.

Good area to avoid, if you can.

The tanker and box truck
collided,

forcing the semi to jack-knife into
the ditch.

All traffic's getting forced off.

The scene covers the entire highway.

Wow, what a mess!

But clearing the scene
will have to wait.

Trying to get to the scene.

We have witnesses on scene as well.

This is a big collision,
a big wreck, and sadly,

it ended up as a fatality as well.

The first thing I want to kinda
figure out is

where this collision occurred.

Yeah.

So, collision reconstructionists
need to piece together

exactly what happened.

You want to collect the information
to be able to have the answers

that the families are gonna
be so desperate to have.

Whether it was on the shoulder or
whether it was in the live lane.

We only have one opportunity
to collect this evidence,

right then and there, before
the vehicles are moved.

And with two semis and a smaller
truck involved,

the damage and debris
they need to analyse is extensive.

So that box...was actually
mounted to the chassis?

The box was on... Correct.

I've never seen a box like that
come right off the chassis

and stay with the, uh...

No.
..the vehicle.

Not only is there damage to the
front end

from colliding into the delivery
truck,

we also
have damage to the trailer,

which is now leaking pelletised
product inside that trailer,

which is now spilling out onto the
highway.

This is like plastic pellets?

Yeah, that's my
understanding what it is.

Officers that are there are working
as quickly as they can

to collect this evidence...

Oh, wow!

..but it's gonna take some time.

On North America's busiest
highway, closure is not an option.

Your travels on the 401 near
Newcastle

could be very complicated for the
next little while.

Of course we'll keep you
posted on when any lanes reopen.

With all eastbound
lanes shut down...

We're heading down to have
a look at the accident scene

and see what's gonna be
required to do the clean-up.

..Bill and Mitch Wright of B&G Towing
inch their way up the shoulder,

and get their first look.

Oh, the cab of that
truck is absolutely mangled.

There's nothing left of it.

They'll be joining forces with
veteran op John Allen from Abrams.

Pretty messy wreck, you know?

The one truck's all destroyed,
the box is ripped right off.

So, you know, quite the impact.

And reconstructionists have now
collected all the information

they can to start
figuring out just how it happened.

The investigators have documented
the critical evidence that needs

to be done before vehicles are
moved.

Take one of John's chains.

I'd go right around that leaf
spring.

Time to clear this road.

We gotta open the highway.

We gotta get this highway
open as quick as possible.

Yeah, right around the frame.

So, the two companies
will split up the scene.

We're going to back the 35-ton in,

and get the little cab and chassis
out of the way.

We gotta move it so John can get
access to the Steinman truck

and get it outta here.

It's pretty ugly.

As one member of Bill's crew hauls
off what's left of the box truck...

Do you want to go
and have a look at that?

..Mitch needs to size up
the biggest challenge on this scene.

The tanker-trailer has a breach.
It's leaking under the back.

Until they can deal with the leak,
they can't move the truck.

It's just little plastic pellets.

I don't even know exactly what the
use is for.

It looks like snow, though.

They seemed very light.

In large quantities,
they're very, very heavy.

The load itself is in
excess of 70,000 pounds.

Yeah, we got a hole down in here.

We're gonna either have to get
this hole plugged up,

or we're gonna have to offload this
load.

If we have to offload this,

we're gonna be here a very long
time.

We just gotta get a rag
stuffed up in this hole here.

That looks like it stopped the leak.

One rag did her!

There's a hole about this big.

As far as we're concerned,
we've got it patched.

Oh, perfect.

I'm gonna get this out up on the
shoulder and drag it over here.

On the south side of the road,

John's rigged up and ready
to pull out the jack-knife.

It's a pretty simple job.

You know,
we want to be quick, efficient,

everything hooked up,

everything cleaned up and out of
here as quick as we can

to get this highway reopened.
This is our major artery.

The quicker I can get up
outta the way, the better.

Push the box off the front of
that truck if you can, please.

Across the highway, Bill and Mitch
have wrangled the box free from

the tanker where it was embedded,
but it's revealed severe damage...

Fifth wheel assembly that hooks the
truck to the trailer

is entirely ripped off the frame.

We're gonna have to get the trailer
elevated to get the truck out.

..and as they elevate the tanker...

And it's leaking like
a sieve right now.

You got a big breach back there.
No, I don't think so.

No, I think it's just coming out
as we take some weight off of it.

I could be wrong.

I walk around
the other side of the tanker,

just to have a quick look...

Oh.

We got a way bigger leak than we
thought.

Oh, God!

A couple rags
ain't gonna fill that one.

..there's a second
leak, and it's much worse.

That's a problem.

We got a breach about this big.
Where?

The other side.
Let's have a look.

This is not what we needed.

Unloading the entire trailer due to
a hole

is going to increase the recovery
time for several hours.

OK. It's not small.

Under the truck on the other
side above the frame?

Yeah.

Well, now we have a complication.

We thought we had just the one hole
on the trailer...

Can you fix it?

You can't patch it.
We thought you were patched up.

When you give the OPP an ETA to
get the highway cleared up,

you try to stand by that,

so to have to go back up to the OPP
and explain to them

that the job's gonna take longer...
OK.

..it sucks, but unfortunately,
it's what we have to do.

Can we go up and in with
plywood and twist it?

I'm gonna try something.

I'm going to screw around with it
right now...

We've gotta get the second hole
plugged

in order to move the trailer.

We said... We thought you were
now gonna drag it off the highway.

We were going to do
the offload off the highways,

so, like, can you find...

Yeah, we can get some ratchet
straps, plywood, we'll do something.

Yeah. Yeah, just strap it up.

So, none of this would fit?

I don't think so, no, 'cause
it's such an awkward shaped hole.

You gotta kinda just be quick,
and think on your toes,

and try to figure out
different ways to make things work.

We're gonna get a piece of
this curtain cut open,

and we're gonna actually use it to
try to fix the breach

that we have in the side of the
trailer, and then close

that hole up temporarily.

Kinda doing with what we got right
now.

We gotta get the highway opened up.

As fast as you can move it,
it comes out.

that's not a tear, is it?

I can fit my whole (BLEEP) arm in
there. It's a big hole. I can't...

I don't even think I'm gonna
get anything jammed up in there.

We're starting to get
some impatient people here.

We've got to get this done.
There's no way to patch it.

The more I keep screwing with it,
the more it's coming out.

It's just gonna make a bigger mess.

As fast as you can move it,
it comes out.

On the 401 east of Toronto...

We have to transfer it off.

Unfortunately, we're gonna
have to unload the product.

So, we
need a vacuum truck here now.

It's leaking out, and we
can't drag it down the highway.

But an offload will cost them hours.

The road's been closed for a long
time. We've got massive backups.

You know, there's a ton of pressure
to get the highway opened up.

So, while they wait
for the vacuum truck...

Can you get the MTO to
start working on a taper?

If we can open up one lane here,
we'll get some traffic flowing.

..Kerry needs to let
some traffic through.

Right now all the traffic is getting
forced off onto a side road,

and the roads
are absolutely jammed.

When we find these complications,

it's frustrating to know that
this is gonna take even longer.

We want to get the traffic moving.

If the police and maintenance crew
can create a rolling block,

using their own vehicles to lead
traffic and limit the speed,

they can merge it into a single open
lane...

One lane will be open,

and that will at least alleviate
some of the pressure,

and allow traffic
to start getting through the scene.

..and the offload
itself can finally begin.

We got the truck and trailer
showing up now

that we're gonna offload this unit
into.

It's got a big vac hose we're
going to drop in the top,

so we're gonna get him pulled in
here nice and tight,

and then I'm gonna get up on there,

and feed
the tube down through the hole.

Get up there.
Yep.

Take it down to the front, 'cause
he's gotta do the front compartment.

OK, we're into the product now.
Yeah.

Is that as fast as that'll come?

Pick it up, and I'll straighten it.

OK, one sec...

You put it too deep, it plugs.

You don't go deep enough, it doesn't
suck, so constantly working it.

We have a four-inch hose, and we've
got 70,000 pounds of little beads,

so it's a slow process.

We're gonna be rolling up ahead
shortly soon.

OK, 10-4 on that.

Let's just make a wall beside these
guys all together, one big wall.

As the offload starts,

Kerry and the maintenance crew are
ready to get traffic rolling.

We're gonna just keep the traffic
back

just a couple hundred metres
until you guys get established.

They need to slowly and
safely funnel

three lanes of stuck
traffic into one open lane.

The last thing we want is for people
to take chances and take risks,

and put
people's lives in jeopardy.

You can see all the traffic
rolling in behind us now.

We're going to move all the traffic
up to the collision scene,

where we still have two left lanes
blocked,

but
at least we'll have one lane open.

There goes the traffic!

The move will relieve some of the
backup,

but it
comes with a price...

It takes some pressure off to let
some of the cars go through

and get things moving,

but now we have live traffic going
through a scene where we're working,

so, you know,
now the danger aspect goes up.

We're gonna be sucking for a while.

..and soon tens of
thousands of drivers

will start flooding out of the city.

We're gonna have to unload
this as fast as we can.

90 miles northwest...

..a rollover is choking Highway 11
down to a single northbound lane.

Tractor-trailer was southbound on
Highway 11.

For an unknown reason,
the driver lost control,

and it ended up on its side in the
ditch.

We could be closed
for another six hours.

The southbound semi ploughed through
the median into the opposite lanes,

across oncoming traffic,

before it smashed through the
guardrail into a farmer's field.

I got my work boots on.

I'm just waiting for him first.

And Classic Towing's rotator is on
scene to get it back on the road.

He's gonna make the first
major pull right now.

And this winter, Phil Barron
is taking over the controls.

OK, cool.

That's lots, man.

I've been working for Classic
for probably the last three years.

Before that, Metro
for a year,

and before that,
Abrams for seven years.

That's about it. I love my job.

This year, he's moved up to Classic's
75-ton flagship,

the most powerful
rotator in southern Ontario...

The truck that I'm in now
is James Ireland's old truck,

and then he left to open his
own business,

and then Bubba drove it, and then he
decided to move on,

so I "graduated" into it,
I guess you want to say,

and I've been having a lot
of fun with it.

Try to be careful.

..but the senior role is
a major responsibility.

There is pressure when you get
into a rotator.

The truck's more expensive,

and if you do something wrong when
you're lifting something heavy,

there's all kinds of
ways to damage the vehicle.

I can pull the back a little
bit more and see what it does.

Today, the 75-ton is in for
maintenance,

so Phil's working
with Classic's smaller 60-ton.

We'll give it a shot.
Yeah.

He's joined Tyler Woll and Pat
Luck from Lucky's Towing.

It's the two crews' first time
working tandem on a recovery.

We need to work together.

We need to stay on the same page.

He's gotta watch me just as
much as I've gotta watch him.

Just pulling the semi away from the
trees to assess the damage.

We still got two trees
up right into it, Tyler.

If the trailer's intact,

they can upright it loaded, shaving
hours off the closure.

It's not the news they wanted.

She's ripped wide open.

Oh, yeah. Once we pulled it back
from the trees,

we saw there was an awful lot of
damage to the side of the trailer.

I don't know if we're
gonna get it upright.

If it's loaded, it's a real risk.

You can have a lot of problems
if you try to pull it upright.

The trailer can snap in half.

Just grab me that chain.

With 5,000 to
10,000 pounds of cargo,

Phil is willing to take a chance.

We're gonna try to stand
it up in the ditch here now.

I'm coming off the rim up here
as high as I can get.

trailer doesn't twist...

We don't wanna pull it any further,

We're gonna offload it.

We don't have a choice.

It's a steep embankment,

the trailer is severely compromised,

and we don't
wanna take the chance.

We're going to get another trailer
here,

and we're just gonna offload it.

The quicker, the better.

The offload will add
hours to the job...

..hours of frustration
for northbound drivers.

The road's been closed since about
9am this morning,

and we perceive it to be closed for
another three hours, approximately.

Obviously we have a lot of traffic
now on our side streets

that isn't helping, but it's all
we can do at this point.

80 miles south...

..there's more
trouble on the QEW in Oakville.

Kevin Richardson's day
was supposed to be over.

He was on his way to deliver a
surprise for his son's birthday.

Purchased a used car from
just a tow company I know.

My son just turned 19.
He just got his driver's licence.

He's a good kid, and I'm
proud of him, and...

down a call this urgent.

We're right at rush hour.

The truck, hauling a Sea Can loaded

flipped over just as it was merging

We were blocking lanes two
and three, plus the on-ramp, so,

of course they're gonna be on you,

is pretty good because he will

explain what needs to be done

I try to just take my time

shut down the eastbound 401.

With the afternoon rush building,
the B&G crew has hit another delay.

We give the OPP an estimate to
clear this.

Sometimes we're forced to, you know,
put time limits on something

when we really don't have all
of the facts in front of us.

What a mess!

There's no intact rigging points
on the underside of the tractor.

Go if you can behind, uh...

it's kind of like a stopper?

So, Mitch is forced to improvise.

How about in here,
through the frame rail?

OK, I'm gonna get that a

We got it up as high as we can.

Now all that's left is the tanker
itself...

Oh, yeah, look at that.

..and it's tangled
up in a tough spot.

Never in a million years.

We've got two issues with
the tanker now that it's empty.

We've got the tailgate from
the straight truck

is wedged between the wall and the
rear duals of the tanker,

and the nose of the tanker is
overhanging the wall

onto the westbound lanes.

It is so. Like, very good.

That's the problem, yeah.

We gotta figure out how
to get it out of here.

Ah, we've got a mess.

We need the second wrecker.

But that's the rotator, already
hooked up to tow away the tractor.

We're gonna have to winch
the tanker off the wall,

and we've gotta get at it,
and get it done.

So, Bill decides to multi-task.

Mitch, I want you to pull up...

..and then back down
beside the wreck.

To save time, they'll keep the
tractor on the rotator's hook,

while it lifts
the back of the trailer.

Saves him going down the road,

dropping the tractor and coming
back.

You know, it's about getting the
road open, right, so we, um,

try to be as creative as you can.

sets up his underlift on the front.

We got the trailer pulled off the
wall. We're pinned up.

sunrise is almost at its end.

We can get off the road onto a safe
shoulder

so we can get the highway cleaned up
so they can open it.

Ten minutes, we'll be out of here.

There was stuff everywhere -
multiple trucks,

multiple towing companies, a
lot of police presence.

A bit of road stuff to clean
up, some debris,

and then this highway should be
opened back up.

It's been a stressful day,
but we're getting the job done.

It feels extremely good to get this
one wrapped up and heading for home.

It was a long
day, it was difficult.

There was a lot of learning
curves, a lot of unknowns.

However, in the end,
we've come through.

It's been a long day, man.

There was a lot of stuff going
on, and I think that, you know,

as a whole, we tackled each
job,

and kinda got things done to the
best of our abilities,

and got the highway opened up.

Back up Highway 11, evening
traffic has been hitting a wall.

They're just about ready
to start to pull this out.

The two heavy crews have
unloaded the remaining cargo.

OK! Now down.

Now they need to get the semi up the
slope,

but even empty,
it's in no shape to make the trip.

We're gonna cross-chain
the underside of it,

try to get some structural strength
back in it,

'cause it's not gonna survive.

I'm gonna cross-chain underneath
the trailer

from the landing gear legs to the
back bogie trails,

and we're gonna tighten those up.

The chains will help restore some of
the trailer's structural integrity.

Unless it's cross-chained,

we'll probably end up pulling the
trailer in half.

First...
This'll be cool.

..they'll have to risk lifting the
battered trailer

up from the muddy field.

Nice shot.

That'll get our strap
over the other side.

Take that chain
and go right across.

I'll just take it up nice and slow.

See what happens when
we pull it up.

Now comes the fun part.

Hopefully it supports itself.

It'll be a little floppy, but
it's gonna be better than it was.

Next is to get him to take the
spreader bar away,

and then we're gonna
start pullin' and prayin'.

The worst happens,
the trailer will split apart.

We'll soon find out.

The semi is so badly compromised,

the crew needs to ease it upward,
gradually.

I'll sure be glad to
see that trailer up here.

We don't want it to climb.

We want it to ride the ditch,
and it's a steep graded ditch

that could put too much stress on
the trailer,

and pull it apart just from the
force

of trying
to pull it up too soon.

Tyler will slowly pull the wreck
backwards along the slope,

until Phil can use his boom to move
it to the road.

So I'm gonna start pulling.

We just have to do everything in
little tiny increments

and try not to stress that out too
bad.

the broken trailer is starting to
lean off the bank.

Might want to do the V chain now.

The crew needs it to roll
straight to avoid tearing it in two.

Time for Phil to step
in with the rotator.

I'm gonna move ahead, throw a strap
over to the rear of the trailer.

Now it should come.

You're hooked on, right?

Alright, you're starting to pick
it. OK, we're gonna start pulling.

Yeah, I'll come with you.

For the final stretch up to
the highway,

Phil and Tyler need to pull as one.

It's important that we bring
everything up the bank in one piece,

at the same time, so we have to
match our winch speeds.

My winches are a lot
faster than his are.
