It's a big mess to clean up.

..double trailers...

She's gonna be ugly.

..double destruction.

The report
was saying that fuel is leaking.

It's a major hang-up...for the OPP.

All lanes
are blocked right now.

Ready?
CREW: Yeah!

And Duncan...

He's tipping himself over.

..gets stumped.

Whoa! Holy!

A massive mid-winter front

is pummelling
the entire southern edge of Ontario.

Road crews
from one end of the 401

to the other fight to keep up.

(AMBULANCE SIREN WAILS)

But drivers are struggling.

And the clean-up
will last long into tomorrow.

Just before dawn,

at the south-western tip
of the province...

..the snow has finally passed,

but a thick layer
of ice still clings to the roads.

And on the E. C. Row expressway

in Windsor, it's a bad time
for a car carrier to breakdown,

straddling a live lane.

After an intense day
and a few hours of sleep...

OK, let's see what we got.

..Eric Godard is back on the job.

(CAR HORN HONKS)

What the (BLEEP) is wrong
with people?

Probably about the worst place
in the world to be,

but I kind of have no choice.

The highway's really getting slick.

People aren't gonna slow down,
they're not gonna move over.

This thing is so low,
I can't even get under it.

Car haulers ride low
to give them more clearance up top.

Hang on.

Oh, you know what I got going on?

But right now,
that's less clearance for Eric.

Well, he's got
the driveshaft broke in the middle,

so it's digging into the ground,

so I can't even take it out of here
until I get that under there

and get that shaft out.

And you make sure when you go in,
you get under the centre right away,

'cause that's where the room is.

If it comes down,
it's gonna be two inches,

three inches off the ground.

This sucks.

A guy my size,
there's just no space there.

Holy!

God forbid that somebody rear-ends
this damn thing.

On North America's busiest highway,

closure is not an option.

Watch your toes. Coming at you.

And here's the problem.

That's what was digging
into the ground.

Eric's out from under the truck,
but in these conditions...

he's still not out of danger.

Now, we got a car on the other side
of the fricking expressway.

I'm just glad it happened
on that side of the road

and not on my side,
when I was under this truck.

Time to get off the expressway.

We got to tow it really low.

I didn't hook up brakes,
I didn't hook up lights.

I didn't do anything.
Nobody's slowing down.

I got some stuff to do,
but we'll do it somewhere else.

Yeah.

The faster you can get
out of there, the better it is.

OK, you ready?

Yeah.

It's going to be
a real long day with the weather.

And the truth is I'll be back
at it again in a few hours,

if we get that much time.

And just a few hours later...

..Eric rolls up east
of Windsor in Tecumseh.

Just another day in the life!

Got a lot of sharp steel
and metal,

so we're gonna cut
some of that away.

Derek Didone Senior

and the entire
County-Coxon heavy crew

are facing a double-semi recovery

that's shut down
the entire westbound 401.

This is like the convertible
style trailer we've got going on.

It's gonna be a lovely tow call.

After one transport loaded
with auto parts stopped

on the edge of the highway,
a second semi slammed into its side,

ripping both trailers wide open.

I've never seen that happen
before in my life.

There's got to be a quarter
of a kilometre of debris scattered

between the two trucks.

It's a big mess to clean up.

It's going to be ugly
as hell really,

but there's no fast way to do it.

And we're doing everything
we can to get this road back open

and we're a long way from that.

Four hundred and fifty miles away,

the eastern end of the 401
is still digging out from the storm.

And on the eastbound highway
in Brockville...

..one semi driver made
an unexpected detour.

It's sitting down in a hole,

so it's gonna be
a bit of a challenge.

Getting it out

is up to Duncan Cooper
from Cornwall Towing.

It's in the ditch.

And when I say in the ditch, like,

three tractor-trailer lengths
in the ditch, into the trees,

which is just gonna make everything
a lot harder for us.

She ain't a yard sale, boys,
but I'll tell you what,

she's still gonna be a job.

So, 60 miles from home,
Duncan's called in some local help.

Here we go.

..veteran operator John Campbell.

Just when I thought things
were gonna be OK today,

this clown shows up.

(JOHN LAUGHS)

I've known Duncan
for a number of years.

We've done a few jobs together.

He called, said he was doing one
in my backyard, basically.

I was more than willing to help.

We'll take both the tow trucks.

Yep.
And we'll...

Both wreckers will pull
the front end over that way.

Oh, sure, yeah.

And Duncan's ready to get to work.

The plan here
is we're gonna jack-knife

the front end of that truck
straight out this way,

get it up onto the road.

But first, we're gonna
have to do some landscaping

to get it out of here.

We're gonna cut down some trees!

They need clearance
for the trailer to slide sideways.

(MACHINE WHIRRING)

There we go. Heads up, fellas.

(MACHINE WHIRRING)

Yay!

That should make life easier,
unless we get stuck on that stump.

They'll hook three lines
from both wreckers

to the front of the tractor,

pulling it so the trailer rotates
and avoids getting caught

on the stump
as it moves to the road.

The trailer's in perfect shape.

It's not broken.

So, we want to try
and navigate around this stump,

not run into it and break something.

There we go.

Yeah, we're under the leaf spring
and over the frame.

Yeah.

OK, fellas,
grab a handful of cable.

A little more!

Green line's on.

It's all aired up now,

so we're just going to bring it out
at a nice angle.

Nice and slow.

Get it up on the shoulder
of the road.

OK, hold on.

The trailer
isn't moving according to plan.

Put the trailer brakes on.

We need that trailer
to skid now.

Yeah.

We want that trailer to turn.

Right now,
it's trying to come ahead,

and we don't want it into the stump.

OK.

This stump being
a pain in the ass,

just like every other stump.

How we making out
with that stump?

Whoa, whoa. Hold!

That's it!

So right now, Duncan,

the front axle of that trailer
is at that stump.

OK,
so I got to go straighten sideways.

Yeah.

Last thing you want to do
is get stumped by a stump job.

On the 401 just east of Windsor...

In front of the landing gear,
find a spot.

..the County-Coxon crew needs
to get westbound traffic moving.

So, they're prepping to clear
both wrecks at the same time.

It's a pretty impressive collision.

It's something
that you don't see very often.

And the only way really
to conquer it

with any kind of speed is to work
in separate crews.

We need
that underskirt off there.

Derek Senior
and Junior are leading

the team to recover
the semi in the rear.

Hey, Dennis!

I'm grabbing a 36-foot strap.

Eric and Dennis are offloading

the trailer at the front
of the scene.

I'm gonna walk it
right around the whole pile.

One of the biggest challenges
we're facing,

these totes are extremely heavy.

So, it'd be nice
to unload from the side,

but unfortunately,
we have to unload from the doors.

We're gonna try to pull
this whole pile backwards,

and literally
just offload three skids,

pull it some more, three skids.

We need the weight out
of it in order to get

the thing back to the yard.

OK, we'll give that a try.

Up at the second wreck...

There's not a whole lot
of structure in the trailer.

..Senior is facing a trailer
ready to fall apart.

The biggest thing we got
is you can see all the cross members

of the trailer are busted off.

So, this whole wall of the trailer

is completely detached
from the floor.

They need to tow
the trailer in one piece...

Come on in.

..but unless they can secure it,
the semi won't survive the trip.

Can we do it belly?

So, Senior wants to create
some instant rigging points.

Just run
your strap underneath the trailer.

Yeah.

We can pop some holes
in the side of the trailer

to hook the strap into.

Alright, let's tighten them up.

We've done this method before.

Sometimes it does not work.

I mean, the trailer
could be too compromised.

What we're going to do
is lift the centre of the trailer

and chain it to add some structure
into the base of the trailer,

and just hope for the best.

Let's get the tractor up.

Got it?

Three hundred feet up the road...

Beautiful!

..they've emptied
and separated the trailer,

and Eric's ready to hook up
for the tow.

I'm banking on one good side
being enough to hold it together

to get it back to the yard,
but time will tell.

I'm all set, man.

I'm gonna go see
what I can do down there.

Start yanking on her,
then we'll see what'll happen.

Now, Senior will separate
the units and find out

if his improvised strap support
has any chance of success.

Well, this ain't gonna be pretty.

It could be an issue pulling
the tractor out from these trailers

when they're badly damaged.

Easy...

You want to limit how much
you're working with this trailer.

Easy.

You're almost off the plate.

Just we're losing so much structure
in the trailer here.

OK, just crawl.

You're just gonna be
on your frame rails here.

Little bit more.

Go.

The trailer is holding,

but hooking it to the wrecker
will put added strain

on their patch job.

We're just gonna put
the wrecker on it and see

if we can get her up high enough.

Go ahead.

Yup. Heads up, guys.

She's gonna be ugly.

I mean, all we got to do
is keep it held up.

We're gonna have to run slow anyhow.

Yeah, we got everything hooked.

Ours is ready to go.

The final test for both trailers

will be when the wheels
start rolling.

We've taken every possible step

to make it safe
to get them off the highway,

but when you're talking
this kind of damage,

there's only so many steps
you can take.

We're all leaving.

We got trailer hanging out
all over the place here.

We're still pretty unstable.

(TRUCK HORN HONKS)

We're just going
to have to take our time,

and we should be OK
to get to the yard, hopefully.

It's going down the road
with this big bend in the middle.

It probably looks pretty scary
to the average person.

God, these things are a mess.

It's a relief.

You get going down the road,
everything's going good.

We don't really care
that we have to go slow.

We're not gonna be breaking
any speed records getting back

to the yard,
but we'll get them back to the yard,

and that's the important part
of the job right there.

You want to go around that.

OK.

At the other end of the 401,
near Brockville...

And then we're just
gonna make a loop with that.

Duncan is re-rigging to the back
of the trailer in hopes

of diverting it away
from the tree stump.

We got to get the back
end over this way,

get it by that stump,

so we can continue
on our path uphill.

It would be
really, really awesome

if I could just get it
from there, boom,

up to there, done deal.

Let me get a bite into her, John.

See if I can pull
the side of the trailer

over this way a little bit,
get past the stump, OK?

OK, let's see what happens here.

We're past the stump now.

The trailer is free.

Now, they need it to follow

as they pull
the tractor up to the road...

Uh-oh.

..but the tractor isn't moving.

We saw the wheels come up.

The tractor's buried
right down, like, in a hole.

There's a great deal
of resistance there.

I don't like that.

Holy...!

I don't like that.

On the eastbound 401...

He's tipping himself over.

Holy...!

John Campbell is fighting
some heavy resistance.

Too much of an angle, John?

I got too much of an angle!

It was a bit of a whoa,
whoa, whoa moment.

You got to be careful.

let me go back over here.

What's the plan?

I got to hook on the other side.

The angle is just pulling
my truck around sideways.

OK.

It was too much resistance
for the angle my truck was on.

With the new rigging in place,
John's ready for another shot.

But as they near the final stretch,

Duncan must pull
the trailer sideways up the slope.

About the last 10 feet
the trailer had to move,

it was coming up an embankment,
gravity was starting to fight us,

and the trailer
was trying to lean over.

That thing is a beast.

Look at that!

Oh, yeah!

That's pretty good there, gentlemen.

Just gonna drive ahead and pull

the whole thing out together,
and get her set up, and go.

OK, everybody clear?

Yeah!

That's another one
out of the ditch again.

Yup, there you go.

Watch out, Duncan!

You got to love it
when a job goes like that.

It was a beauty.

I just got to hook it up
and get 'hr home now.

We didn't do any more damage
to any of the company's equipment.

As far as I'm concerned,
it was good.

Alright.

Two hundred miles to the west,

the worst of yesterday's storm
has blown through,

but its final traces
are still hitting

the highways around Toronto.

Your best friend
in this weather is slowing down,

giving yourself some space,

100 kilometres an hour
on snow-covered roads,

you just can't respond
the same to anything that happens.

OPP Constable John Jameson

sees plenty of warning signs
for drivers.

Drive around in this weather,
car in the ditch,

car in the ditch,
car in the ditch everywhere.

And so that should be a clue
to slow down,

but then you see somebody else

coming along trying
to set a land speed record.

But just west of the GTA,
in Hamilton...

..nobody is moving
on the eastbound 403.

OK, 10-4.
I'm making my way.

So, the report
was that the fuel is leaking,

so we want to get there
and get it dealt with.

Here we go.

You can see there's pretty
significant backup of traffic.

It's up to John to help manage

the scene and reduce
the impact of the closure.

And we're here.

That's a scary ride.

Is everybody OK?

Yeah, everyone's fine.

Alright.

It's not a huge spill,
but it's enough to be problematic.

We can't open this road up
with the fuel sitting there.

One hundred
and twenty miles southwest,

another blast of winter
is bearing down on Highway 402.

Everybody's going pretty hard.

Lots of things going on.

We've got Kyle and Collin,
they're both out on other jobs.

I'm the last guy left.

So, Gary Vandenheuvel
is answering this call on his own.

Sounds like we got
a couple trucks that have spun out.

I'm not sure what we're into,

but we'll find out
when we get there.

Today, Gary's bandages
are off after a long recovery

from a severe hand injury.

OK, so grab a seat.

You did have
a pretty significant fracture.

OK.

You're not gonna make
a fist tomorrow.

It's gonna be gradual, right?

Just a couple of weeks ago,

Gary was still fighting
to get back his mobility

after making slow progress.

I'm gonna push the limits,
I know that.

Yes, and that's gonna be
my job to make sure

he doesn't overdo it,

because this does not need
to go backwards.

It needs to go forward.

It's been a battle for Gary
and his wife, Tammy,

the co-owner of Preferred Towing.

Gary's injury
has changed the way we all think.

This is a dangerous job,

and this really brought that back
into reality for us.

Now, Gary's heading solo
into a double recovery.

Gonna try to keep up.

Got to clear up
these couple accidents

as quick as we can.

Gary pulls up in front
of the first casualty,

a garbage hauler spun out
on the edge of the highway...

..with a second semi visible
just a few hundred feet away.

Just taking a look here.

(SIGHING)

Took this guardrail and it just
peeled it back like a banana.

He's in pretty good here.

This is a fully loaded
garbage hauler.

These things weigh
in at about 140,000 pounds.

They don't get
much heavier than this.

It's into the guard rail,
leaning a little bit in.

And any time you're dealing
with that kind of weight,

there is challenges behind that.

Slide the front
of this tractor over first,

that's my first goal.

Gary hooks one line
to the truck's tow pin,

hoping to swing it away
from the guardrail.

It's gonna be
a bit of a challenge.

This thing's got
a pretty good lean under it,

'cause I can get my hands
underneath the tires already,

so that's telling me
how much pressure

and force is going that way.

The last thing I need here

is this thing to tip over
as I'm going out.

Hopefully it'll come off
the guardrail.

Come on, roll out.

She's not working.

It's sliding the truck.

Pretty clear
this thing's not budging.

That guardrail is got
a real good hold on this truck.

Well, this one's not giving up
without a fight.

I got another job down the road.

We got to get that out.

I want to get off this highway.

Don't want to be out here
any longer than we have to.

Every day is a challenge here
at Preferred Towing,

and today's no different.

On the eastbound 403...

..a heavy crew is lifting
the jack-knife off of the guardrail.

There we go!

For John Jameson,
managing the scene,

it's the first step
toward reopening the highway.

A lot of people inconvenienced
by the closure here.

There's only one lane
getting through in the shoulder.

But John needs to shut it all down
so the spill clean-up crew

can access the scene.

We're just gonna stop
the traffic.

It's a necessary step to remove

the diesel and allow
all lanes to reopen.

We just need
to bring a truck in the wrong way.

Just stay here, don't move, OK?

Just advising all lanes
are blocked right now momentarily.

The vacuum truck here,
they're cleaning up the spill,

what's left of it,
and the repair guys are here,

and they're fixing the guardrail.

OK, just go nice and slow,
and steady through there.

You see where you're going, right?

We do our best
to keep the roads open.

Unfortunately sometimes

road closure's required to open
the road in a safe manner.

Snow's coming back in again,

OK, I see Collin coming up now.

..Gary's double wreck
is too much for a single operator.

Luckily, some backup
just became available.

And Kyle's here as well.

Collin and Kyle,
they've arrived.

I know that Kyle's
got the chop saw in hand.

Now, I can work a little bit easier.

It's amazing
how much resistance

one little piece of aluminium.

Oh, it's just been fighting me.

OK, let's fire up the chop saw,

cut this here,

So, I'm fighting mud,

It's gonna put up
a pretty good fight with my truck,

but a good one to put my knowledge

to the test and show my dad
what I can do.

But Collin's operating
a straight wrecker,

making the sideways pull
an extreme challenge.

Yeah, just fun.

Five hundred feet up the road...

Not much holding that on.

There, it's off.

..Kyle and Gary
have cut through the guardrail...

That might give me
a little bit more to pull now.

..removing as little as possible

while allowing room
for the truck to clear.

I'd try it.

I'm gonna put a snatch block
in this right here,

see if I can get it to pull back.

We don't want anything
to happen to that fuel tank.

There's 150 gallons of diesel fuel
that's gonna run into the ditch,

so we cannot have that.

It came apart.

But the main event is still ahead,

wrestling 140,000 pounds sideways
onto the road.

I don't want to be
tearing off airlines.

There's stuff under this trailer
that we didn't see before.

We don't want it to cut an airline,
or cut a tire,

and make our job more difficult.

OK, let's get a couple pieces
of block,

and we'll walk over top of that.

We're just gonna build ourselves
a little wood bridge here.

With so much weight
working against them,

Gary can't afford any problems
on the hauler's way out.

Alright.

Down the highway,

Collin's rigging up
for his own tough pull.

So right now,

what I'm doing
is I'm setting up to do

a side pull on this truck.

My dad's put me in charge
of getting this one out,

so I'm hoping I might actually
be able to pull this thing sideways.

Working with a single wrecker,

Collin will use one high line
to winch the truck sideways,

and a second to hold the trailer
upright as it moves.

I'm gonna be attempting
to do this all with one truck here.

It's gonna be a pretty tough pull.

I don't really like
pulling off the rims, but hopefully,

once it breaks resistance
with the mud,

it should roll pretty freely,

and it should be
a lot less of a pull.

And conditions on the road
are rapidly getting worse.

Ah, someone slid out
on the other side.

Car went in the ditch over there.

This stuff is really
pulling people all around the road,

and we got to be really careful.

Can I get you
to fire it up here?

Release the brakes on just this,
and put it in neutral for me?

So, this is a pretty hard pull
on this rim sling.

They're not rated
for a whole heck of a lot,

and there's a lot of weight here
that we're dealing with.

Right now the trailer's still up
on the roadway partially,

and we want to keep it that way.

Come on, baby, work for me.

I'm putting a pretty good hard pull
on this thing right now.

I've got my truck itself sliding.

I'm hoping to get some bite here,

but I'm also hoping
that I don't over pull.

I'm just concerned here.

I don't want to break anything
on this truck.

Just get him up
and out of that hole.

East of Sarnia on the 402.

Collin's sideways pull...

(COLLIN GROANS)

..has gone sideways.

Just pulled
too hard on the strap.

I knew,
I should've rethought that, but...

Yeah.

And all I got was about six inches
out of this stupid thing.

(GROANS)

I knew it was way over
its limits, and I pushed it.

And I'm very fortunate

that the strap pretty well dropped
right away.

It didn't hit anyone,
it didn't hit anything.

You know, lesson learned.

(COLLIN GROANS)

Just like his father,

Collin has to accept
when it's time to ask for help.

Well, it weighs about
86,000 pounds, and I can't budge it.

Alright.

I want to get this done
so I can get down the road

and give Collin a hand.

I'll keep an eye on it
as it comes out.

Yeah, we're gonna be
in a world of hurt here trying

to get this out,
if I start breaking stuff,

pulling this truck out.

Gary and Kyle are rigged up
and ready to pull 70 tons

of garbage hauler onto the road.

Gary will pull forward,

while Kyle holds
the trailer upright.

We don't want it going down
into the ditch,

we want it coming the other way.

They're depending
on the wood blocks

as a buffer
against the metal debris.

Looks like the driver is gonna
be able to drive this one out

under its own power, so that's good.

Definitely a nice feeling
seeing my dad roll up here,

'cause I need the help.

I moved it all about
six inches, and that's it.

Everything's heavy
and loaded today, isn't it?

I think
he's a little bummed out.

I think he was hoping
to get it out on his own,

but sometimes these big ones,

weighing in at 80,000, high load,
they'll fight you.

So, not much you can do.

Two-truck job.

Maybe if we can get in here,

one truck here,
start pulling a little bit this way,

one truck on the front.

Yeah.
See what it does.

The plan is to use my truck
still on the front,

and then the rotator is going

to be the one supporting
the trailer.

Hopefully break that suction free
and get this thing rolling.

They need a hard enough pull
to wrench it free of the frozen mud,

but with a top-heavy load inside,
there's a limit.

We've got to get that resistance
of trying to get it out of the mud,

but we don't want to pull too hard,

because obviously we don't want
this thing to roll over.

You ready?

OK, let's give it a shot, Coll.

If we're not careful here,

we could actually risk
flipping this trailer over

and taking the whole unit with it.

OK, Coll, there you go.

There we go.

The trailer's
rear end keeps lifting,

wheels come off the ground
every time we pull.

Whoa.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, stop!

The trailer is actually starting
kick out on us.

We're running
the risk of flipping it now.

And I'm gonna let go here, Coll.

Set her back down on the ground.

Yeah, I think
I can get it from here.

OK.

I'll grab the ass end of it now,
and then start pulling it around.

Yeah.

With the suction
of the mud broken,

Gary will now try to direct
the trailer sideways

while Collin pulls forward.

It's gonna put up
a pretty good fight.

Coll, you ready?
Yup.

She's just sliding back
into the ditch.

I need you to pull a bit more.

OK.

Ah, there we go.

It's looking good so far.

Almost there.

I think we're good.

Little bit of a struggle today.

Yeah.

Definitely a lot harder of a job
than I originally expected.

Thought I could do it
with one truck.

With Collin doing
these jobs, he's learning.

He's gonna struggle on some of them.

That's all good.

You know, it's always nice
to be able to do a job by yourself,

but sometimes you do
have to call your limits and know

when to call in for assistance.

It's nice to know the kid
still needs me once in a while.

Maybe if I had
a 65-ton rotator myself,

I'd be able to do this.

It's time to get out of here.

After years of work,

It feels tremendous.

It's like having a dream come true.

We have seven units,
three of them are one-bedrooms,

and four of them are two-bedrooms.

Everything they need. Yep.

Tammy's drive to help
in her community runs deep.

When I was younger,
I was homeless.

I know how it felt, and I don't want
to see any other youth suffer.

So, three years ago...

Ready?
Yup.

One, two, three!

..she and Gary took the first steps
to turn her vision into reality.

Everything has to be gutted
and a little bit of redesigning,

but it will be
a pretty awesome place

for youth
who are needing the support.

Whoo!

There's groceries
for you guys out there.

It's an incredible opportunity

for them to have a safe space.

It's life-changing for them.

Yeah, like I said,
it's like a dream in a way.

Tammy had a different lifestyle
growing up than I did.

To be able to overcome that,
it's pretty amazing.

It takes a really strong person
to be able to come through that

and do what she's done.

She's my hero for doing this.

(CHUCKLES) You're my hero.

Believe it or not,

we got cars in the ditch
this morning,

so I have to go back out.
