A mid-winter warm front
slams into southern Ontario...

..drenching the highways
around Toronto

in an unrelenting downpour.

Well, the rainstorm
we've been expecting

is certainly causing
excessive delays this morning.

We're dealing
with numerous closures,

flooding on and off ramps...

We are supposed to get
about a month's worth of rain in,

like, a 24-hour period.

Just north
of the 401 in Brampton,

constable Rob Visconti

heads to check on a maintenance crew
at an on-ramp to Highway 410.

The ramp is obviously flooded
due to the amount of rain

that we've been getting.

The MTO's got the top of the ramp
shut down,

not allowing any cars
onto the ramp, for safety.

Dangerous situation.

Cars coming down the ramp,
they're gonna hit the water,

they're gonna hydroplane,

so we gotta get it cleared
right away.

If a layer of water gets
between a car's

wheels and the road,

steering and brakes are useless.

That's when your car
is gonna spin out of control,

and you're gonna cause a collision.

So, slow down,
leave lots of space ahead of you,

and pay attention
to what's in front of you,

behind you,
and beside you at all times.

It's supposed to get worse

as the afternoon
and evening progress.

I'm just gonna continue
patrolling our area here.

I'm expecting a pretty busy day
ahead of us.

No freezing rain yet,
but it's still dangerous.

It's a poor visibility
because of the rain and fog.

30 miles north,

conditions are weighing heavy
on Sonny Subra.

I am expecting a son.

My life has completely changed.

If I lose my life,

I got nobody
to look after my kids and my wife,

so basically, it's me...

I got a call.

There's a truck blocking the lane
on the northbound 400.

It's right there,
but it's really hard to see.

He is blocking the lane.

Oh, wow, this guy is in a bad spot.

Why these two cars here?

What are they doing?

The driver ran out of fuel

and called family members for help.

They're on scene,

waiting for his son
to deliver a jerry can.

I asked them,
they said they are OK,

but I can see they are not OK.

I'm gonna go let the OPP know
they are not OK.

Very bad spot here.

There's a transport truck
blocking the right lane.

401, 400 northbound.

It's very dangerous, because,
like, people cannot see.

They don't know if it's in the lane,
or it's in the shoulder.

They can come and hit the truck
right in the back,

so, boom, it's gonna be a disaster.

With the risk increasing
every minute the family waits...

the OPP responds to clear the lane.

Hook 'em up?

OK, thank you, officer.

This is really a bad spot,
but nothing you can do.

You gotta hook it up.

The live lane of traffic
is very close to us.

If somebody,
they don't pay attention,

they can run into us.

..but just as Sonny
starts to hook up,

the driver's son finally arrives...

..and he's determined

to save his father
from a towing bill.

On North America's
busiest highway, closure...

Is not an option.

I don't know
what's going on here.

To clear the lane quickly,

the constable is giving the son
one chance.

Alright, let's just...
Yeah, yeah.

I'll let them...

Let them do it.

If they can start the engine,

it will clear the lane faster
than Sonny can rig up.

They're gonna put fuel in,
then start it up, and then go.

Officer gave them a chance,
but if it doesn't work,

then I have to tow it.

It's a waiting game is going on
right now.

It's a very bad spot.

They shouldn't run out of gas
on the highway.

120 miles southwest,

the temperature is just
a few degrees colder...

..but that's just enough.

This stretch
between Ingersoll and Putnam,

it can get pretty greasy
from day to day.

Doesn't take much for this area
to turn into a sheet of ice.

Ross Services' Austin Hutchinson
is pushing through the slush.

I'm heading up
towards Ingersoll.

I got a call for a tractor-trailer

that supposedly
has jumped the median.

He's the newest heavy op
to join a team loaded with veterans.

We're the young guys
coming in,

and we need to step up,

and we're gonna have to take
on a bigger role.

We'll go down and have a look,
see what we got.

Today, Austin will be stepping up

alongside lead operator Mike Ross...

Aw, man.

Seriously?

..and the job
already looks daunting.

I show up
to a tractor-trailer

that's on top of the guardrail,

but it's stuffed
underneath an overpass as well.

They never mentioned anything
about an overpass.

Looked like he jackknifed,

and put it up over the guardrail
in between two columns.

We don't want to just pull
this tractor-trailer straight back

and start ripping
the front end apart,

and then we're into coolant leaks,

and possible engine oil leaks,
and stuff like that.

Well, I was thinking

maybe we should
take the trailer off it.

Just confirm that it's empty,
and see if that will work.

Empty. Yeah.

The goal is always to try and work
without shutting down the highway,

so we're gonna see
what we can do here.

(TENSE MUSIC)

Real slow, OK?

Yeah.

Austin will pull the trailer
from the back...

while Mike lifts
and guides the front.

Taking the signal
from Mike here,

we're backing this trailer up
while he's swinging it out,

bringing it out underneath
of this overpass.

It's a little bit nerve-racking,
obviously.

I don't want to have
the nose of this trailer

swinging off
the end of Mike's rotator.

Perfect.

Perfect so far...

Yeah,
that doesn't look good, eh?

..but now it's clear

just what the tractor,
and they, are up against.

We're definitely
dealing with inches to spare here.

There's a beam
under it and everything,

and these posts
are going to be an issue, and...

We're gonna have to do
something with it.

I don't know.

On Highway 400,
just north of Toronto...

..the stranded semi is fuelled up.

He's trying to start it.

..but the truck refuses to start.

So, now, it's up to Sonny
to clear it off the road.

Where do you wanna go,
gas station?

(SIGHS)

The temperature's going down.

It's gonna get freeze now.

Freezing cold rain, eh?

It's an automatic truck.

I have to pull the drive shaft,
but it's raining so hard,

it's not an easy thing.

(GRUNTS)

Removing the drive shaft

will save the transmission
during the tow...

(GROANS)

..but that means
more time on this busy highway

in bad conditions.

Traffic in the live lane,
they're flying by.

That's really dangerous.

I can't spend time here.

No.

This is not gonna work out.

So, Sonny turns
to the alternate method

to keep the wheels
from engaging the transmission.

(GRUNTS)

Almost ready to go.

Gonna put the tow lights.

Good to go.

You can't be careless,

giving up your life
on the side of the highway.

Back on the 401 in Ingersoll...

What are you thinking, Austin?

..before Mike and Austin can try

to free the tractor
from the overpass,

they need to make room to work.

I've never had to pull
one off of a wall

that's kind of wedged

between ground clearance
and between the roof clearance.

Come give me a hand
with this tank.

Their first step,

try to gain some clearance
on the bottom...

Still full of fuel.

Yeah, you're alright.
Go ahead.

Fuel tank was stuck up

underneath the tractor,
creates an issue.

lay 'er down, Austin,

..but even if they've gained room
on the bottom,

Mike has to manoeuvre his boom
over top.

I think we'll just kinda pull
and lift here...

We're gonna have restrictions
with the boom.

Trying to lift it off the median
will be a little challenging.

I think we'll get you
to lift the back end up.

I'll lift the front...

Swing the front?
..and we'll swing it over.

Alright.

We're trying to work
underneath an overpass here,

but we're limited for space, so...

I'm just gonna boom up, OK?

Austin will pull the tractor
back and out,

while Mike's rotator lifts the front
up and off the barrier...

There we go.

..but as they get ready
for the move...

Oh, it's kinda got
the air dryer

hanging out over the front here.

..the tractor reveals
another surprise.

It's hooked.

Basically,
the entire rad support

and your charge air cooler
for your intake,

it's all caught right up
on the front of this median.

Yeah, we just have to be
a little careful.

Lifting it off's gonna be
a little tricky

'cause of the height restriction
and clearance and all that,

but didn't want to create
any further damage

to the concrete median or the truck.

Come down, Mike,
you're good.

We'll get a hold of it right here.

The air dryer
for the braking system

adds only a few inches...

OK.

..but they didn't have
many to spare.

I'm gonna get a hold
the back end of this tractor,

and Michael's gonna grab a hold
of the nose.

We're trying
to not lift this truck high enough

that we're gonna be doing
any further damage

to the bottom of this overpass
or to the roof of this tractor.

Hey, Austin,
we're hung up on the roof there.

Do a little pulling
more than lifting.

Right to the support
of the overpass

there is right where this roof
is stuffed under it,

so we gotta try to walk it back
at the same time as lift it here.

Under a tight overpass
in Ingersoll...

Mike and Austin are all out of room.

Yeah, hang on.

They need to reposition

and re-rig to clear
the rest of the barrier...

the other side of the post now,

so I can swing my boom.

so we can swing 'er out.

to swing the boom

out around the side of this post,
pick the nose of the tractor up...

He's gonna let his cables out
while I boom up and in,

and hopefully
we can set the front end down

inside the wall.

Once you get
a hold of it again,

a straight stick wrecker,

Mike has the rotator.

We definitely have
to kind of be in sync together,

because I don't have the swing
that Mike does.

It's coming along pretty good here.

We're just working it around here.

That actually
come out of there pretty good.

Pretty slick, eh?

It's definitely a big relief

once we get this thing
up off of the wall

and over that guardrail.

Little tight.

Had to wiggle around that column
a little bit, little messing around,

but come out pretty good.

Tonight went
really, really well.

Mike and I are really happy
with this recovery.

Trailer come off no problem,

and that tractor walked its way
out just the way we wanted to,

between the two trucks,

so we're really happy
with how tonight went.

..and the nights ahead
look promising, too.

Guys like my dad,
they're not around as much anymore.

It's important that we build up
some of these younger guys

to help out on these big jobs.

Hopefully it'll be an easy job,

some veteran backup, his father, Al.

My son asked me
if I wanted to go out.

Dad's been retired
for several years there now,

for help.

The date was August 22, 1998.

Anyway, I was in the shop,

and I was working

and the oxygen line, it blew.

My father, in that accident,
he lost his left eye,

and quite a few fingers
and digits on his left hand.

At the time,
Duncan was working in Toronto,

but when he got the call,

he left his job
and his new life behind.

on a scene miles west of town.

We're headed out on the 401

towards where we've got

a couple of tractor-trailers
in the median.

With a heavy steel hauler
to recover,

Bill decided
he could use some backup.

There's basically
no two calls are the same.

The whole thing is,

it's a different scenario
every trip.

It's not gonna be easy.

We have
a tractor-trailer jackknifed.

She doesn't look bad,
but it is loaded very heavy.

It's mangled.

The front of the tractor
was out onto the road,

into the fast lane,
blocking traffic.

There's another one
on the other side of the road.

Apparently,
he come through the middle,

this guy tried to miss him,

he still hit him, and he wound up
down here in the ditch.

A westbound semi lost control,
smashing through the median,

right into the path
of the steel hauler,

which careened
to the other side of the highway.

OK, watch out, guys!

There we go!

Another company will tackle
the second truck in the morning,

but the steel hauler
is too close to the road,

and needs to move tonight.

OK!

We hooked the chains
on the end of the spring shackles,

about the only thing solid there
to hook onto right now.

Step one,
straighten out the jackknife,

and get it pointed
in the right direction.

Make it happen!

They rig
for Bill's operator 'Mouse' Carson

to pull the tractor toward the road,

and Cornwall's Matt Quan
to pull back on the trailer.

Down to one lane, boys,
let's go faster.

Another big concern,
the roads are bare and dry,

and the traffic that we're dealing
with on our side of the road

tends to drive a lot faster.

The crews will need
to keep themselves,

and the wreck, clear of traffic...

..on both sides of the median.

You ready?
We're all hooked up.

She's good whenever you're ready
to pull 'er, Dunc.

It's heavy, eh?

Oh, yeah. It's a heavy pull.

We gotta watch

we don't put that thing
out onto the highway.

Pull on that yellow one
a little tighter.

It will help steer.

With its front axle mangled,

the tractor is diverting
into the live lane.

This front of this tractor
is destroyed.

There's no way of steering it.

We have to use
the winch lines of the tow truck

to steer it out to the position
where we want it.

Hold on, Matt!

Yeah.

They're all out of room.

Loosen your lines off,
give yourself about 20ft.

OK.

Duncan needs to reposition
and re-rig.

Trying to direct
the front end of the truck

back away from the other lane.

Get the snatch block
low over to this one side.

It'll help steer

the front of the truck
over a bit more.

At least,
that's the plan, right, Mouse?

Ah, that's always the plan.

Just keep an eye
on the back of the trailer, eh?

Can you see what's going on

On the 401 east of Iroquois,

Duncan's pull is veering
in the wrong direction.

We just about
got the tractor

over into the other lane now,
and that's no good.

The axle's pushed
right back to the back end,

and we can't steer it
with the axle driven back that way.

When things don't go right,

we start getting a little bit
frustrated, and you know,

"How are we gonna re-rig this now
to make things simpler?"

You know what we're gonna do, Matt?
What?

We're gonna try something
a little funny here, OK?

OK.

They need, somehow,
to force the tractor to turn.

We're gonna hook up
to the front axle with this...

Yeah?

..and then we use the rotator
and winch this truck ahead.

OK.

That way here we can steer,
and it'll be a lot easier.

We'll hook up with this, OK?

OK.

The wrecker will hold

the broken front end
up off the ground,

to steer the hauler,

while the rotator pulls
both wrecker and casualty.

Then you're just
going to choke it up on that side?

Yup.
OK.

I thought this would be
a way to quicken it up,

instead of fighting
with no steering on the tractor.

How's it there, Dad?

Good! 100%.

We're gonna take
this steering axle problem

out of the equation right now...

There we go.

..and then Matt's gonna
winch this truck

ahead with the rotator.

It's too heavy
just to simply drive ahead

with the tow truck to try
and take it out of the snow.

Release your brakes!

They'll have to muscle
the combined weight of the hauler,

its 20-ton load, and the wrecker.

The trailer is loaded
heavy enough.

We are coming up
a little bit of an embankment.

We still have a long ways to go
before we're out of the woods here.

to lift the truck a bit.

It's gonna start getting heavy now.

after a few weeks of smaller jobs...

The boys are all pumped
to get going.

It was quite a while since
we had a wreck of that nature.

Finally got a good wreck.

..but because of the direction
the semi is facing,

Andrew needs to spin
his rotator around.

As Andrew makes his turn,
he can tell that today,

they'll be fighting resistance
from some very soft ground.

Bill, can you pull me, buddy?

I'm stuck.

Backed up a little too far,
started spinning, I said,

"I got this", and she didn't move.

I was hoping not to do
an 18-point turn with the 80-ton,

but that's kind of what happened.

Well, that was embarrassing.

Operator Bill Fell can chalk up
his first recovery of the day,

but the next one will be tougher.

It's pretty exciting
to get a big wreck.

Kind of get our juices going again.

Let's just do
a quick walk around.

When the westbound semi
lost control

and veered
in front of the steel hauler,

the impact deflected it off-road
and into the woods.

It's like the milk truck
all over again.

But drier.

Junior op Zach Thomson

can see that this terrain
will be trouble...

The truck was surrounded

and entangled
in a bunch of trees and branches.

It's like
your perfect piece of puzzle.

We gotta find a way
to MacGyver it outta the trees.

I'd like to cut down
the least amount of trees possible.

It's gonna be a good pull, eh?

Yeah,
your job's gonna get a little...

A little challenging.

..but the biggest problem
is that the westbound semi

ended up in the eastbound ditch.

We try at all costs to avoid

pulling out a tractor
facing westbound

in the eastbound lanes.

If we did so,
we would have to do deal

with a complete highway closure.

To keep one lane
of traffic moving,

Andrew must spin
the entire transport around

before it hits the road.

This is going to get finicky
for Bill.

This job is definitely
not just a hook-and-pull job.

It's gonna need a lot of finessing.

On the 401 west of Cornwall...

..Andrew Vink has worked out a plan
for his wrong-way recovery.

OK,
we'll bring the trailer over here.

Ass end comes out,

so we're going to be
in the jackknife position.

Once the trailer's on the road,
swing the tractor over.

Good?
Good plan.

OK.

You see that cross-member?

The amount of room
we had to work with

was gonna give us a challenge.

Job one was to get that thing
out of the trees.

We're gonna have
to kinda thread the needle a bit,

and do a bit of lifting to be able
to get this thing to the road.

So, the initial pull
is this is pulling it out...

Yeah.

..to try and get the tractor
out of the bush.

No, not even out of the bush.

You just need it about six inches.

OK.

The tractor has cosmetic damage
to the front end,

but was relatively in good shape.

To keep it that way,

the crew will ease the tractor
back out of the trees

before they swing the semi around.

OK.

For that first move,
Zach will control the pull.

Basically, whenever
I start pulling the trailer back,

it should pull the truck away
from the trees.

Right to the fifth wheel.

Bill and Andrew rig
from Bill's rotator

to the fifth wheel.

Bill, you're good.

As the trailer retreats,

Bill will direct the tractor's path

with a very narrow margin
of error...

If everybody's clear,
we can do the initial pull back.

No, no, we're good to start.

Hey, I'm getting...

It's pulling me, eh?

Are we clear of the trees, Pierre?

Yeah.

Since she's out of the trees now,

we're gonna be
pulling this thing out

so it's facing eastbound
in the eastbound lanes.

Bill, you can start booming

all the way
out right to the ass end.

Bill takes care of the trailer,
so we're just doing a swap.

We're gonna swing
that trailer around,

have Zach hook up to the truck.

As he comes right out
on that jackknife position,

then we'll swing
the tractor around.

I'm pulling.

It would have been
100% easier to

pull this thing backwards

so it would have been
facing westbound.

The gamble we took
by swinging the trailer 180 degrees

is Bill being so far out

you're dragging that trailer
in the snow.

You don't know exactly
what's underneath that snow,

and you're adding resistance
to the pull.

..and this is just Bill's second
full winter as a heavy operator.

As long as you don't pull hard
on the right line, Bill,

just keep it snug.

And is it staying snug?

'Cause I can't see it.

This is a major manoeuvre
for me.

I had the boom full out.

She's almost opening up for ya.

that Zach can start pulling
on the tractor.

I had to balance this thing
and swing it over

while matching Zach's speed.

get that trailer

turned right beside ya, buddy.

she'll wind up in the live lane.

Coming up.

The higher the incline,
the more angles you got,

the more stress on your truck,

we can have the potential
of rolling this thing

over back into the ditch.

Blue line is not snugging in,
or is slack, Bill.

Bill's got a lot of stress going on.

He's got the trailer
suspended in the air,

and Zach's winching
on this tractor...

Oh, yeah, now she's fightin'.

..and every single feet

that Zach's bringing the tractor
towards him,

Bill's got to adjust
at the back end.

Jeez, I'm not liking that.

We had it just about up on the road,
and the trailer tipped over a bit.

Whoa, hold on!

It scared the hell out of me.

Bill, tighten the line.

Tighten your silver line.

With the trailer
dangling in mid-air,

Bill needs to keep his lines
evenly taut on both sides.

Bill, just keep it snug.

Keep tension on it.

Just like that.

Well, you can go down if you want.

She got adjusted.

She followed the fifth wheel angle.

The fifth wheel
pivoted to the front.

So did the trailer.

What happened there
is Bill let go of the line slightly,

and that trailer just...

The centre of gravity
just wanted to centre itself,

and it just pivoted
on the fifth wheel,

so a little mistake.
