An early winter snowstorm is
hammering the highways of Toronto.

KERRY: When you're driving in snow,
you have to adjust

your driving to those conditions:

People caught by surprise can forget
the basics of winter driving.

This guy up here is gonna split us.

He's going.

This guy definitely should
not be doing what he's doing.

Whoa!

This is exactly what not to do.

As night approaches,
the highway is only getting worse.

On the eastbound 401 at Bayview,

one driver...

..completely loses control.

Crashes don't happen
because of poor road conditions

or poor weather conditions.

It happens because of poor
driving decisions.

And in this case,
we have drivers going way too fast.

And this driver isn't waiting around
to tell his story.

(SIREN BLARES)

Within minutes, OPP Constable
Mark Chimiski arrives on scene.

So, I can see there's, like,
front-end damage.

It looks like it hit the guardrail.

We're just in a dangerous spot.

My goal is just to get
this vehicle hooked up

as quick as possible and then,

I can investigate it further
from here.

As the tow operator hooks up the car,

Constable Chimiski
continues the investigation.

From the way the tracks are,
it looks like he went eastbound.

We've got a canine officer
on the way.

They're going to check the area
and then,

we're going to go from there.

When the police track him down,
the driver will be charged

with failing to remain.

And police are bracing
for more drivers

making more bad decisions
before morning.

So they should slow down and
make sure they have winter tyres on,

and keep your good distance from
the other drivers in front of you.

And six miles to the east...

So we just got a call for
a rolled-over lumber truck.

Sounds like it is just
a massive mess right now.

..Sergeant Kerry Schmidt is
heading toward a much bigger scene.

KERRY: So, yeah. Here we are.

Wow, this is a big wreck.

Debris all over the highway.

This is a busy stretch of highway.

We need all lanes reopened
for the morning rush hour.

KERRY: So typically,
this would be three or four lanes

of 401 eastbound express,
but right now,

it looks like a lumberyard.

An SUV hammered into a crash cushion,

bouncing into the path of
an oncoming lumber truck

that smashed down across the highway.

Fortunately, no-one was killed
in this crash,

because it certainly
could have been a lot worse.

But again, technology like this
is there to keep people alive,

but really, it comes down to drivers
making better decisions.

Abrams Towing's John Allen
will lead the charge

to clear it before the commute.

You know what?

I don't know what happened,
but off on his side he went.

I mean, it looks like pick-up sticks
all over the highway.

It'll be a big job, big clean-up.

We're on a tight schedule here.
We gotta get this done.

And the job...

..just got even more urgent.

JOHN: That tank is full.

Because the tractor's
on its side over here,

the diesel is leaking out
through the overflow.

Bri, make sure
the electrical's disconnected.

The only way for John and fellow
rotator op Brian Newton

to stop the flow is
to get the tractor on its wheels.

Uprighting this vehicle
and getting it out first

is the top priority.

OK, watch yourself there.

He's going to start giving
a little tug.

But first, they need to slide it
clear of the trailer.

And that reveals a bigger problem

hidden just under the snow.

Time is of the essence right now.

There's probably, you know,
100 litres of fuel sitting there

that's going to go into
the catch basin.

I'm going to change
my angle out wide

and pull it out this way now.
Yeah.

BRIAN: What we're doing is
we're dragging the truck

away from the catch basin.

We've got to get it away.

Nobody wants anything down the
sewer.

And until they upright the tractor,

there's no room for a vacuum truck
to even gain access.

That's good.

Put some Absorb-All down on this.

Just right here.

We got a big puddle of diesel

all contained,

but that's only going
to last so long.

The most important thing
at this point

is get this tractor
back on its wheels.

We're going to do a reverse roll.

So we're basically just going
to run a strap underneath

and we're going to flop it
the opposite way.

Throw that one down
around the frame here.

We're gonna try and get the truck
flipped over as quick as we can.

And hopefully that'll slow
the leak down for us, or stop it.

But they won't know for sure
until it's upright.

As soon as it's back on its wheels,

we had a look and the diesel's
stopped leaking, at this point.

BRIAN: Want me to start
rigging the front?

So the first issue on this wreck
has been solved.

But the work has
barely even started.

KERRY: Yeah, what a mess here.

The tractor-trailer
is just destroyed

and we have a massive mess
of lumber and debris.

I do hope we'll have
all lanes reopened

With early morning traffic
already picking up.

John needs to make room for
the salvage crew to tackle the wood.

JOHN: There.
I'll get it over the truck here.

I'm going to pick the trailer up,

we're going to swing it away
from the lumber.

The other guys can start dealing
with the lumber

and we'll finish
the upright of the trailer.

For Brian and John,

the recovery now hinges on

getting the trailer up
and off the highway.

BRAIN: Once he gets it
to the sweet spot,

what we're going to call it,

I'm going to pull up
with my truck,

then I'm going to pull
the bottom out,

we're going to flip it over here.

With John already rigged
for the lift,

the challenge for Brian
is finding solid points

to pull and flip on the bottom.

What do you want to do,
grab the pockets?

Yeah, just tie-down pockets.

Brian will pull on the rail
and pockets used to secure the load

while John will lift from above,

rolling the trailer onto its wheels.

That'll work.

We're rigging to the pockets
of the trailer,

'cause it's the most accessible spot

for us to get this done quicker.

It's a bit of a gamble,

but we're gonna hope
that they're gonna be

strong enough to flip it over.

John and Brian are gambling on

the quickest available rigging point.

Whoa, that was close.

Happened so quick.

Just the weight of the trailer
and from the swing of it,

it just tore the rail
right off the pocket.

I always work off my remote,

just because of that situation,

the casualty

and your wrecker,

The trailer's now upright,

but they need to position it
to tow away.

..Frigid early morning air

descends onto Highway 402.

GARY: We've got
a slippery morning going on.

We've got a bit of
an ice fog happening.

And the harsh conditions
have taken their toll.

We've got a tractor-trailer
rolled over

in the centre median on the 402.

Not sure what we have.

That's part of the mystery
until we get there.

Whatever he's facing,

Gary Vandenheuvel will be fighting
with a major disadvantage.

I'm kind of a wounded one
this morning.

We had a little incident
at an industrial yard

and I got hit by a forklift.

You had your X-rays today?
I did.

You can see how the bone
is completely on an angle there.

Right.
Oh, you've got some

other breaks in your hand as well.

A forklift driver
from another company

crushed Gary's hand
while they were moving equipment.

Before you have your
full range of motion,

it's going to be
a couple of months, probably.

Taking a little bit
different of a role.

I'll do my best to keep my hands off
as much as I can, this morning,

and let the guys do the work.

As lead operator,

Gary's son Collin
will be facing heavy,

awkward spilled cargo.

First big scene like this
that I get full control on.

the rest of the winter, I think.

for a secondary accident to happen.

getting these coils out.

They're down deep in the ditch.

how to get this one
back up on its wheels.

Not an easy job by any means.

GARY: I'll go back, get the float,

so we can get these coils.

As Gary heads to grab a trailer...

..he's trusting Collin to oversee
the first phase on his own.

Oh. Looking at the trailer here,

there isn't really
a whole lot of structure to these.

They're just an aluminium frame.

The front wall's going to be
our strongest point

when we're trying to upright this.

Gonna need two trucks on this one,

just to make sure that
everything goes alright.

eastbound there?

To get it to roll over for us,

we're gonna have to lift
the front of the trailer up,

just so we can get one strap
underneath of this thing.

and Sonny Subra
is heading up the 400.

Driving in Toronto,
it make you go crazy in your life.

The last few months
have brought a big shift for Sonny,

at home and on the road.

I moved out of Toronto,
the first change.

And then second change is,
I change the company.

Yeah, just get it done.

After Sonny built his recovery career

at Steve's Towing,
he and Steve have parted ways.

I just want a change.

A lot of companies asked me to come

and work for them,
but they're already built up.

Sonny wanted to help build and lead

a heavy division from the ground up.

We have around 10, 15, one-ton,

and then I came here,
and they bought this one.

Toronto's Prompt Towing
gave him his chance.

It's really a start-up company.

We've got to build it up slowly.

This is a 50-ton boom on the back.

It's not a rotator,
but it's a great truck.

(ENGINE STARTS)

While I was in Steve's Towing,
I got too comfortable.

I got nothing there to do.

I wanted to run.
I wanted to keep running.

But Sonny can only succeed
if he gets the jobs.

Now, I'm cruising around.

I've got to build up a customer,

Today, he's back on the chase.

As Sonny approaches the scene ahead,

he makes a quick assessment.

It's a pretty bad spot.

drop this one.

But as he heads to
the drop-off point,

he gets word of another job
six miles ahead.

With the disabled truck
still on Sonny's hook,

he's hoping one-ton driver Deric
can secure the scene.

One is holding the back end

and one is pulling out
the front, right?

That's how we gotta do it.

They've spit up quite a bit

As Dan assesses the job,

pulls up.

I'm going to pull him aggressive
to the road.

Won't be more than 20 minutes.

Since he's answering a direct call
from the trucking company,

Yassin from Auto Route
takes over the job.

We finally got done two jobs.

That's given me some hope
that it's going to be a good season

GARY: It's probably good there,

..Collin and Kyle have
the semi back on the road.

I've got to tow the whole thing back
to the Preferred yard.

I got the easy part.
I got the truck and trailer.

So, wrangling the almost
30,000-pound rolls of aluminium

will be up to Collin.

So, what we want to do
with these coils, Coll?

'Cause I know you've never
dealt with these before.

Just gonna take some chains
and wrap it around it.

We wouldn't want to get it up
in the air

and it start unravelling and then,

we're chasing it down the road
and it becomes really miserable.

So let's start with
throwing these through

and putting them together.

With the position of the second one,

it doesn't really leave me
a whole lot of room.
