whether they're professional or not.

This applies to film and video,

just as it applies to photography.

How you approach your subject will

Like I said earlier, the camera looks both ways.

Taking a positive approach will

get you a positive performance.

Be generous with your information.

Be open and explain what is going on around them.

They've probably never been in

a situation like this before.

Keep them informed and keep them

engaged in the shooting process.

Explain each step of what's going

on around them, what each crew member

is doing, what the equipment is,

why there's a slate, things like that.

And keep your conversation light, upbeat, and positive.

Talk to them about their interests,

or what they're experts in.

You want to warm them up and keep them relaxed.

Here are a couple people who aren't

professional actors and how we

kept them engaged in the process.

- [Male Crew Member] I'm just going to pass

this in front of your face for one second.

- Alrighty.

- [Female Crew Member] So it can color correct.

- Yeah, yeah.

(laughing)

- [Male Crew Member] What it does, is

it gives them reference colors for skin tones and stuff.

- Oh cool.

- [Male Crew Member] So it keeps everything consistent.

- Yeah, yeah, very nice.

- [Female Crew Member] 'Cause when they get footage

sometimes they don't know what

we actually look like in real life.

- Right, right, right, yeah, yeah.

(laughing)

Got to, have to make it look like us.

- Yeah. (laughing)

- [Male Crew Member] Everyone seen the slate?
