- Methodically breaking down
your script and its scenes

will ensure that you and your talent are

figuratively and
literally on the same page

when it's time for production.

When you look into your scripts,

you're going to need
to know what the point

of each scene in that script is.

Remember that you and the talent
are working toward a goal.

So you need to know every bit
of what you're working toward.

You want to know how each scene fits

into the telling of your story and

how each scene relates to each other.

What you're looking for is to find

the journey of your story.

Where does it start?

Where does it go to?

And then, where does it end?

And you want to make a list
of possible routes for each

scene on how you get through that journey.

To do that, you're going to
need to make a list of questions

that you need to answer
for each and every scene.

And when you do this, this allows you

to deal with dialogue changes later

because you will have already decided

how you get from one point to the next.

Here's the scene questions
you should be asking.

How does the scene fit into
the rest of your story?

What plot points in the
scene move the story forward?

What is the turning point
or the climax of the scene?

How is the climax resolved and
how do things ultimately end?

Then you just want to list out the major

actions that happen in the scene.

And then what characters do you think

are in control of the scene?

And what are the individual
beats that change

the direction of the scene
from one thing to the next?

Breaking down your scripts
by answering these questions

is important information
your actors need to prep them

for the journey of their story.

Now that you've determined
what makes up each scene

and the journey of your script,

you will need to take
that same magnifying glass

to each character.
