ruined by the images on the screen and the sounds that accompanied them.

But I'm sorry, Joker Two.

I've been doing this a long time, like over 45 years.

And this is the first time I've ever won anything as an actor.

And I'm just so humbled and so grateful.

Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress.

And at that time, I made that mean that this wasn't something that I was allowed to have.

That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn't be acknowledged.

And I bought in, and I believed that.

And that corroded me over time to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it.

Maybe I was complete.

Maybe I've done what I was supposed to do.

And as I was at kind of a low point, I had this magical, bold, courageous,

out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance.

And the universe told me that you're not done.

And I am so grateful to Corley for trusting me.

To step in and play this woman.

For Margaret for being the other half of me that I couldn't have done without.

For looking out for me.

To the people who've been with me for over 30 years.

hard, and we all fell in love with movies at some point.

We were all in the dark when we saw something that changed our brains and made

us see a perspective that we never thought before, or opened a culture that we never

believed existed before, and it made us drop everything to risk everything to be here in this town right now.

And I think about that, and I think about how beautiful that is, that that's why

this is for you, the fans out there who came to the movie theaters to bring your

friends and families and stay in the dark and watch.

We saw your videos, we saw your sing-a longs, we saw your makeup, your hair

products, your bakery items, I don't even know.

And it shows us how important making this stuff is in a time when pessimism and.

Cynicism sort of rule the planet right now, that we can still make art that is a

radical act of optimism, that is empowerment, and that is joy.

And so when we discover that maybe the world isn't exactly the way we thought it

was, that maybe we're a little bit Elphaba inside of us, that maybe that we have that

courage and that strength to not give up, but to rise up and take the road off the

yellow brick road and maybe discover we can fly.

stories that are too dark and complicated won't sell and no one will watch them.

So I hope that Baby Reindeer has done away with that theory.

Because I think right now, when the world's in the state that it's in,

and people are really struggling, we need stories that speak to the

complicated and difficult nature of our times.

You know, any story, when done right, is universal.

And all the weird idiosyncratic struggles we go through on a daily basis are just as

worthy of being committed to screen as any.

So commissioners, streamers, when you're totting up the numbers and putting

together the budgets for this year, remember to keep some back for the little person to tell their story.

Also, Felicity Jones said she wanted to have a Margarita to celebrate the night.

Well, I bet it'll be more than one now.

I'm incredibly moved.

I prepared one speech, not two.

I have to thank everyone up here who over and over again bet on this film that kept falling apart.

And they stuck with it through thick and thin, really.

So thanks to all of you.

This is an extremely well-produced film.

I'll be brief because I've kind of already said what I had to say.

I was told that this film was undistributable.

No one was asking for a three-and-a-half hour film about a mid century designer on 70mm.
