Original subtitles

In Toronto's war on crime,

the worst offenders are pursued by the detectives

of the specialized Criminal Investigations unit.

These are their stories.

It's a cut-throat world.

We can be winners, killers,

get all the toys, get all the friends,

but at the same time,

feel everything slipping out of your grasp.

But that's the best part, isn't it?

It is the best part.

To finally get given that...

That gift of rock bottom.

So, Councillor Harding, some people want a party.

Um, a wake, if you will.

Others want a more traditional gathering.

Funeral, speeches, sandwiches.

Have you decided on final steps?

- Isn't that why we're here? - I meant...

burial or cremation.

I'm sorry, Miss...

- Haskett. - I'm sorry,

it's just weird.

Haskett, rhymes with casket.

I'm sure you've heard that before.

It's too soon.

I know I promised to meet with you, but...

...as you can see, I have a lot on my plate.

I'm sorry.

For Christ's sake, Cindy,

just tell UCC that the money is on its way.

I don't even know why we're paying them.

Our kids should be in a public school,

in my ward.

I mean, this is just...

ammunition for my opponents.

Hon, I love you.

Now pay the damn school.

Tat, are you coming? Council meeting started,

we gotta roll. - Uh, actually, I can't.

Okay, but the Kingsway story is gonna be so good.

You can't make me do all the grunt work.

Um, I know.

I'm not. I... I got a thing.

But look, you go, take notes

and we'll go through it all tonight.

Okay, fine. Later. I'll... I'll go take notes.

Thank you.

All good, go. - Is she gone? - Mm-hmm.

So are you gonna tell me before I leave? What are you working on?

Not yet. But it's gonna be epic. Just let me...

I just need to lock down the source.

Okay. Is this, like, drinks at the Four Seasons, epic?

Or is it like Taco Bell at a drive-through, epic?

Uh, Four Seasons, baby. All the way.

- Oh yeah? - Mm-hmm.

Okay, then. I'll see you at work.

Bye.

- Councillor Graham. - He's late, again.

He's probably sleeping off another hangover.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe he volunteers in the morning.

Food bank, coaches hockey...

You're new here, Liz?

Mayor McCreigh doesn't care about the vote.

He just wants to do what he does,

which is bulldoze all that boring social housing

and offer that sweet, sweet, lakeside land

to his development buddies.

- And? So do you. - Uh-uh.

There's a big difference.

I don't want to hand it to anyone.

I want to make those boys work for it

and make some real money for the city coffers.

P.S, I'll b using that in our debate.

Do not steal it.

What makes you think I need your talking points?

'Cause yours are all unicorns and rainbows.

Which is why I'm gonna win.

We're both strong candidates for Mayor

and you have to beat me first.

We're neck-and-neck for second.

Well, getting rid of the immovable number one

is my only priority.

Mayor McCreigh.

The Kingsway Revitalization Social Housing Project.

That's a mouthful.

I know Councillors Harding and Graham

have many, many thoughts on this.

Let's do it.

It's not that big of a deal, relax!

Two weeks ago, they told us

they're cutting the budget by 20%.

We're supposed to be working on this together.

- I know. - But now, you're working on something new,

and suddenly, you're screwing our boss?

You're not much of a reporter.

I've been screwing him all year.

Bye!

Ready to talk?

I'm ready to see what you think you have.

Do you have it with you?

I do. Happy to show it to you.

Union Station in 20 minutes.

I'll find you-- - No need. I know who you are.

Excuse me.

Oh my God. Oh my God!

- Oh my God. - Are you okay?

Someone call 911!

Third transit stabbing this month.

Officers in every station, I mean,

I was right there when this all happened.

I could have done something-- - It's not your fault, Jamie.

We've detained everyone in here.

Still taking statements, but right now,

nobody saw anything until she was on the ground.

- Security footage? - Yeah, we're pulling it now.

- Yeah. - Any ID?

No, she didn't have anything on her.

No ID, no bag, no purse. This is just...

so random.

Not this one.

Those other attacks maybe, they were...

frenzied, messy, amateur.

Multiple wounds, multiple witnesses.

But this was one quick slice across the throat.

Severed her carotid artery with tactical precision.

This guy knew exactly what he was doing.

So, this is West one.

There he is.

- How'd you know it was a guy? - Statistics.

- He's hiding his face. - Yeah,

he knows where the cameras are.

He scoped it out. He planned it carefully.

This looks like a targeted hit.

And a robbery. Watch this.

He killed her, then took her bag.

In a crowd like that,

you could just cut the bag strap and run.

Instead, he slit her throat.

He wanted what was in that bag,

but he also wanted her dead.

ID just came in.

Victim is Tatiana Wynn, 31,

lives in Seaton Village. And, wait for it...

She's an investigative journalist for Toronto Life.

Isn't she the one who broke the story

on the police promotions scandal?

Yeah. Not the Chief's favourite person,

but an annoyingly good journalist.

The press is gonna be all over this.

That's one of their own, Inspector.

Yeah?

You think Tatiana was working on something

that pissed somebody off?

I think that's the only kinds of things she worked on.

Tatiana Wynn was working on a few different stories.

There was the Kingsway social housing,

the Eglinton Crosstown boondoggle...

We read about those on her social media.

We're more interested in stories she might not have gone out with yet.

Tatiana Wynn took on big targets.

Any chance she was pursuing a story

that could have put her life in danger?

Uh, well, Detective Graff, there is a...

I can't disclose what Tat was working on.

Not without revealing her sources,

which, as you know, would be completely unethical.

Well, it would also be completely unethical

to date your younger employee. Wouldn't it, Mr. Sanjar?

I'm assuming she answered to you.

That stamp on your hand.

Tatiana, or Tat, as you call her,

had exactly the same one. A Martini glass in a circle.

Judging by your rumpled shirt,

I'm guessing you spent the night.

Yeah.

We went out last night, and I stayed over.

I left around 9AM,

she was getting ready to go. - Where?

To meet a source.

Which brings us back to the story

that she was working on.

Look, she wouldn't tell me what it was about.

Or who the source was.

She just said that it was big. - How big?

Like... drinks-at-the-Four-Seasons big.

Her boss said she was meeting a source, this morning.

Do you know what she was working on?

I wish.

She was being super secretive, competitive,

or maybe I was being competitive, I don't know.

They're making cuts at the magazine,

so we both decided to cover the Kingsway project together.

Wait, do you think someone murdered her over a story?

I mean, wasn't that a random stabbing?

Do you remember anything strange at all?

Any person she mentioned, any place she talked about?

Okay, this...

This probably sounds stupid, but a few weeks ago,

she got this package at work. No return address,

just her name on this bubble wrap envelope.

And usually, that's not a big deal, right?

But that night, she came home,

she didn't eat.

She went straight to her room,

spent the rest of the night in there.

- Doing what? - I don't know.

I mean, it looked like she was watching something,

and when I asked,

she closed her computer, told me to leave.

I'm assuming, if Tatiana is as secretive as you say,

this thing she was watching,

it's not on the shared hard drive at work?

She never put anything on that drive.

So, she must have had a burner email,

some kind of backup hard drive.

Wait, Detective, I need to talk to my boss.

You don't even have a warrant.

As a matter of fact, we do.

So you're not liking her boss for this?

Wrong height, wrong build.

Unless he hired somebody.

It seems unlikely on a journalist's salary.

It's a very underpaid profession,

in my humble opinion.

My mother's a journalist.

She works her ass off, barely makes a living wage.

Great, so...

All we've got is a shady-looking,

throat-slitting murderer and... Oh, hi.

...this riveting hard drive. - I know.

It's like this woman didn't have a personal life.

I don't think you'd find my personal life

on my hard drive. What does that even mean?

She was dedicated, obsessed. A workaholic.

Everything on here is a potential story.

Tow-truck Mafia,

dog-walker drug ring, and then... this one.

Mayor. That's all it says.

It's encrypted within an inch of its life,

it's freaking Fort Knox. Respect, but...

Well, your job just got harder than ours.

- Why? - You're breaking into Fort Knox.

We're just going to City Hall.

Tatiana Wynn's murder? Did I hear about it?

Are you kidding me? It's front-page news.

Not good for your morale, is it?

It's the police department wearing this,

not City Hall.

That's why I upped the budget.

We need more boys in blue out there.

Did you know her?

I met her a few times.

You don't seem particularly...

troubled by her death, Mayor McCreigh.

Well, I'm not gonna lie to you,

Detective Bateman. Ms. Wynn wasn't one

of my favourite people on this planet.

Relentless do-gooder, woke as hell,

up my ass every time I take a breath.

But she wouldn't have filed it

without reaching out for a comment.

She must have contacted your office

within the last month.

Dara, did we hear from that reporter this month?

- Which one? - The dead one from Toronto Life.

Oh, I guess sensitivity training

is not a big thing here, at City Hall.

- Yes. Six calls last week. You said to put her off. - Six calls.

Maybe she was gonna give me a heads-up this time.

Did we know what the piece was about?

- No idea. Sir, we have-- - Hear that? No idea.

I guess we're done here, Detectives.

One billion dollars into your budget.

Millions more into transit security

and you guys can't stop criminals

from killing young women in the street in plain sight?

If I were you, I'd worry less about what I'm doing,

and more about doing your own job, huh?

What's going on?

What the fuck is happening?

What's going on?

- Craig! - I don't know, but they said it's bad.

...scandal.

Following the release of a video--

Oh, what the hell is this now? ...slain Toronto Life reporter,

Tatiana Wynn.

McCreigh was recorded saying: "Hey, man,

nobody is gonna tell me what to do.

I'm the goddam Mayor."

After which he is seen taking a crack pipe

and lighting up.

It has yet to be identified--

I'd say that's drinks-at-the-Four-Seasons-big.

Wouldn't you?

I definitely don't know who that man is and...

I sure as hell didn't hire him to kill that reporter.

And let me guess, you're not smoking crack in that video, either.

Watch it, Detective. I sign your cheques.

Oh, not for long. No disrespect, Mayor,

but I think that this is gonna

put a little damper on your re-election campaign.

No. No, it won't.

My base is strong.

Look, I went to rehab.

I go to meetings once a week.

I've been on the wagon for nearly two years now.

That video, that's... years old.

It's fake news.

That cut on your head, that looks pretty real.

Oh, that was a gym accident.

Whoever said working out was good for your health

never stood up into a squat rack.

Oh, my bad. I mistook it as a wall.

I think that's you cutting your head

on the same night you smoked that crack pipe.

And unless you have some underlying medical condition,

that wound wouldn't take two years to heal.

When was the video shot?

Two weeks ago.

Around the same time

that Tatiana Wynn received a mysterious video

that she played on repeat, all night.

Did she mention that

on any one of the six phone calls she gave you?

Stop trying to connect me to her.

I slipped, so what? I'm not a murderer.

Come on, do you have any idea

how difficult a mayoral campaign can be?

Everyone watching you all the time,

judging your every move?

I still get stressed.

So I went to my local. I thought, you know...

My guy there told me it's nice and slow on a Tuesday.

I thought, "What the hell. I'll go in for one drink,

feel like a normal person for an hour or two."

But you know, one turns into three.

Doesn't it always?

It wasn't your first Tuesday you were off the wagon.

Yeah, but it was the one time,

when I stepped out for a smoke, somebody joined me

and sparked up a crack pipe.

So, I joined him.

Because... I dunno, that's who I am.

But I didn't see anybody stuffing a camera in my face.

I didn't see a cellphone.

Does your new friend have a name?

I don't remember, Detective.

I was smoking crack.

I'm sorry, did I just hear

that you guys accused the Mayor,

of murdering a journalist?

Accused is a strong word.

I'd say we gently prodded.

Well, that's not what he told the Chief,

who just called me, and now, I'm gonna say this to you.

You better have a damn solid case against McCreigh

before you ever go near him, ever again.

Do you understand me?

McCreigh is the only person with any motive

to kill Tatiana Wynn. - While I agree

that McCreigh has both the means and the motive

to make Tatiana Wynn go away,

please remember that the people of the city

love him and his "rough and tumble" ways.

So if we're gonna get into this,

you have to have serious evidence.

Let's go through this together, shall we?

If the mayor killed Tatiana to cover up the video,

then why did it come out anyway?

It may have been a scheduled post.

Or maybe her roommate or her boss

could have posted it from her account?

Tatiana didn't post the video.

The IP address is encrypted.

And the video that was posted to her feed

is not the same video she had in her "Mayor" folder.

That's right, I cracked Fort Knox.

Please hold your applause.

The video Tatiana had on her drive

is 11 seconds longer

than the one that ended up online.

Someone made an edit before they posted it.

- Well, maybe she did? - Knowing Tatiana Wynn?

Yeah, she would have posted every single second of it.

Exactly, and the edited video isn't saved to her hard drive.

This is the section that was removed.

Notice anything?

Can you take it back to the big fat pick-up?

There.

Is that a person?

Can you go in?

That. What does that say? Caribou?

- Carb... Carbon? - Carbone Properties.

It's a construction company, here in Toronto.

I'd say we found our videographer.

Okay. Carbone Properties.

Looks like it's a construction company

founded by one Aldo Carbone.

You think this could be our murderer?

He got cut out of the video for a reason.

And Sarah did say the video was delivered anonymously,

so maybe Tatiana found out who this Aldo was

and Aldo didn't want to be found.

You said you'd be here hours ago.

Oh, I'm here now.

Come on, get cleaned up, we're gonna miss the game.

That journalist, the one you sent the video to?

She was killed.

All right?

That means cops.

If she figured me out, so can they.

Don't worry about cops.

They're never gonna find out. Look.

The part of the video that she saw you in?

I got her to take it out before she posted it.

- How'd you do that? - I talked to her.

I reminded her that journalists have an ethical obligation

to "protect their sources." She agreed with me.

She gave me the original file, I destroyed it.

I don't know, man.

Dude, bro, this is messed up!

Yeah, it's messed up, it's random.

People are getting attacked on transit all the time.

Are you sure it's random?

I dunno. Maybe McCreigh had somebody do it for him?

The man's a snake, he's fighting for his life.

So are you.

I don't wanna go down with him,

I just got back on my feet.

I know.

I'm happy for you, alright?

I told you that my connections would come through.

I said that you would get those permits.

You got these permits. - Got the permits.

Trust me.

We're good?

Any word on Aldo?

No answer at work, wife said he wasn't home.

When I asked her if he'd be back soon,

she asked me if hell had frozen over.

- Ah, domestic bliss. - Supposedly,

he hangs out at a pub called Gavigans.

Watches English football with his friends,

never misses a match. If he's anywhere, he's there.

I can't stand sports bars.

Into the pits.

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me.

I do enjoy a bit of karaoke, though.

Yeah, Aldo. He's here all the time.

- But not today? - Haven't seen him yet,

but you can check with his buddies over there.

What about her? You've seen her in here before?

Uh, that's the woman who was killed, right?

The reporter? - Yeah.

Yeah. She was in here a couple of weeks ago.

She was looking for Aldo. - What a coincidence!

We're also looking for Aldo.

He wasn't here.

She sat at the bar alone, had a soda water.

She watched the game, made some notes.

And Aldo never showed up?

Oh, he showed up, but as soon as he saw her...

...he booked it out of here pretty quick.

Aldo doesn't love the mayor, but none of us do.

Always giving contracts to his friends.

City Hall's a racket.

McCreigh's a man of the people...

Not if you're in the construction business.

When you say us, who do you mean exactly?

Me, Aldo, the boys. You know.

Hey, maybe Foxy knows where he is.

Foxy, these cops wanna speak to Aldo. Have you seen him?

- Ah, he's probably on his way. - Well, great.

We'll talk to you in the meantime.

Sure, what are we talking about?

Now Harry was just saying City Hall's a racket.

You agree?

City Hall is a joke.

Does your pal Aldo feel that way?

You're kidding me?

He once had a little bad luck on this one project.

He got a month into it, then the city shut him down

for safety violations.

Yeah, but he got his permit back.

Now he's building that low-rise.

Lucky son of a bitch. - Yeah, well, sometimes,

luck is what you need in the fog of war.

Look, you...

Call us if you hear from him, okay?

Absolutely.

Tatiana definitely tracked Aldo here.

But what else did she find?

Maybe she figured out

why a guy whose construction business

was in the toilet is back to building a low-rise.

That's a pretty big contract for somebody

with multiple safety violations.

Well, I just got word from the permit office.

They reconsidered his application,

signed off on construction.

He broke ground two weeks ago.

Well...

he definitely broke ground.

What's that?

Aldo's permit, approved two weeks ago.

Well, that's nice.

The day after Tatiana Wynn received the video of the Mayor.

I'm thinking Aldo recorded the Mayor

as a favor for professional gain.

A video for a permit.

Maybe Aldo wasn't the only one who wanted to remain anonymous.

Not if he was working for somebody else.

You call the permit office? - I did.

Guess who "called in a favour" with the clerk there

to help expedite Aldo's permits?

Mayoral candidate, John Graham.

Councillor Graham!

Your thoughts on the Mayor McCreigh video?

The video of our Mayor smocking crack, uh...

Look, McCreigh should drop out of the race.

This is not the kind of leadership

we want our children to see.

Councillor Harding, do you care to comment?

I have no comment on Mayor McCreigh's drug use.

I will say that the vote on keeping

the Kingsway Revitalization Project has gone through.

And I'm excited to tell you all

that we will save the homes of 200 vulnerable citizens

at our Kingsway site-- - So, uh...

Councillor Harding is all about housing,

but you will notice that she refuses

to discuss our current Mayor's transgressions.

A vote for Liz Harding is no better

than a vote for Crackie McCreigh.

Councillor, can you expand on this?

- No, I'm sorry, no. - Thank you, thank you.

Mr. Graham, we need a moment.

I'm sorry, I don't have time

for any more questions from the press.

Then, it's a good thing we're police.

I'm always happy to help the department,

but I have a televised debate to prepare for.

I think a phone call would have sufficed.

Oh, we find that homicide interviews

are much more revealing face-to-face.

Oh, good thing the only place I kill is the polls.

What about pits? Yesterday,

a man named Aldo Carbone died at his construction site.

We found him at the bottom of a pit that he was digging,

thanks to a permit that you helped him get.

I don't work at the permit office.

But you're on the Planning Committee,

where you spend a lot of time with someone who does.

Peter Barnes. Head of Approvals.

He recently expedited five new builds

with questionable environmental assessments

submitted by development firms that fund your campaign.

Then, drag Barnes down here. I don't know this Aldo guy.

So, you didn't ask Aldo Carbone

to record McCreigh smoking crack?

Or instruct him to deliver that video to Tatiana Wynn?

What?

Um, where did you hear this?

Some cog from the permit office?

That's slander. - Or it's true.

I just had to say "murder" and "fraud",

and that clerk dropped your name

faster than McCreigh's poll standings.

Which is exactly what you wanted,

if you were to stand a chance.

So you made a deal with Aldo.

A damning video for a building permit.

But Tatiana Wynn found out.

Which led her to you.

To be fair,

you didn't have much of a choice.

If you wanted to keep your collusion out of the news,

Tatiana Wynn and Aldo Carbone had to go.

Look, I wish that I could take credit

for McCreigh's epic flameout, but I can't

because I didn't do it.

See, someone smarter than me found out

where he goes for his Tuesday night benders,

and I say chapeau to that genius.

Now, as far as murder is concerned,

um, I have an alibi.

The Mayor is down in the polls?

Can you believe this? It's amazing.

Mayor was too distracted to vote on the Kingsway project.

He lost by one.

Social housing stays, big win for Liz Harding.

Think that's why she's up in the polls?

Yeah, that, and the crack.

Yeah. McCreigh, man,

never thought he'd lose.

Yeah, well...

All it took was the noiseless harmony of genius.

Maybe you paid someone to do it for you.

On a public servant's salary?

You manage to pay for private school.

Four of your boys, I see, go to UCC.

That's a controversial choice.

- My wife-- - Works at a non-profit.

How do you think such an altruistic family

can afford such an expensive school?

Because maybe instead of videos,

John here accepts bribes from people like Aldo.

Might actually be worse for his political career.

Right. At least with a crack video,

you're telling the public something they should know,

but if you're just a criminal,

you're out on your ass.

John, if you tell us

everything you know about Aldo Carbone,

your little scheme doesn't have to leave this room.

And that's not a politician's promise,

that's real.

Fine.

I made a call.

I finessed the guy's permit.

I never met him before, never saw him again.

So, you just take bribes from any old Joe off the street?

No.

The people who come to me are vetted.

Oh my God.

Oh, I can't believe I fell for it.

Oh, that bitch.

I didn't think she had it in her.

John Graham told you I set him up to take a bribe?

Asshole.

I know John sometimes colours outside the lines,

but I would never, ever suggest

someone engage with him in that manner.

I mean, Jesus. No.

But you did know Aldo Carbone.

I met him once.

It's awful, what happened to him.

How did you meet him?

My husband introduced us at a campaign event.

They were acquaintances.

Aldo lived in our ward.

He needed help with zoning laws and permits,

stuff for his business.

It's not my thing,

so I got my assistant to introduce him to John.

No mention of bribes, may I add.

I take it you're not a fan of John's.

No, but he has skills.

He's on the Planning Committee of a reason.

I don't go for those big boards,

I'm more interested

in the service part of public service.

Seems you're not alone.

What do you mean?

Your husband, he was military?

I'm surprised I haven't seen him

during your campaign.

Parading a decorated veteran around for votes?

- Hmm. - Not my style.

Besides, he's retired.

Hmm, he still seems pretty busy.

My husband is basically my other campaign manager.

I mean, I wouldn't say that to my campaign manager,

but you know...

Is that signed Aaron Helfand?

You a fan?

Bombers for life, my dad loves these guys.

We used to watch all the games together at his local.

Hmm, Todd does the same. Or did.

He's not much of a drinker anymore.

You sure? Ondansetron.

That's a hangover killer. Anti-nausea, right?

They aren't for that. I'm sorry, I'm confused.

What does Aldo Carbone's death have to do with me?

Is this your husband?

- Love of my life. - Todd, right?

Is he home?

He's getting my dry cleaning, actually.

My suit for tonight.

I have this debate and so-- - That's right.

We'll let you get to it.

She's the vixen, he's the Todd.

Todd, Middle English for fox. Foxy.

And I just thought he had a dumb nickname.

What? I read Chaucer.

I gotta give it to him, though.

Fake drunk on a Thursday afternoon?

Sly as his nickname. The Bombers for life,

that signed Aaron Helfand football?

How'd you even know that?

I have the internet, Graff.

Speaking of bombers, you think

that decorated soldier knows his way around a knife?

He also probably believes in killing for the greater good.

AKA ensuring his wife ejects

that barnacle McCreigh from office.

'Cause he knows that Florence Nightingale in there

is never gonna play dirty enough to be mayor.

Yup.

So a candidate's husband and a construction worker

meet in a bar?

This sounds like the beginning of a terrible joke.

Or the beginning a fiendish friendship.

Can we just skip to the punch line?

Yeah. So we think Liz's husband,

Todd Harding, set the Mayor up.

Probably heard from Liz about his Tuesday night benders.

Apparently, everyone on council knew about them.

He sends his soccer buddy, Aldo, on a mission.

Tempt the Mayor with crack, but get in on video.

Todd then delivers the video to Tatiana Wynn

and in return, Aldo, through Todd,

gets an introduction to John Graham,

who, in turn, gives him his building permit.

Aldo's back in business. - So...

What? Todd outs his wife's primary opponent,

Mayor McCreigh, as a crackhead?

It's not great for Election Day.

- Well... - Okay.

But so far, all I hear is a lot of conspiracy,

not much murder.

And no DNA evidence of Todd at either scene,

no witnesses who saw him.

He's a similar height to the guy

in the skywalk security video

but so are about 200,000 other men in this city.

Anything of substance here at all?

Motive.

We believe that Tatiana Wynn had that video

for at least two weeks before it was released.

So, why hold it back?

Because she was looking into where it came from.

The missing 11 seconds put Aldo at the scene.

She traced it to Aldo, which led her to Todd.

And that's when she realized

this video wasn't the whole story.

No. The real story

is about the man who set up the mayor

so his candidate wife could win.

- Oh, ain't love grand? - Now,

unfortunately, Todd found out

that Tatiana was taking the story in exactly that direction.

So he got rid of her to protect his identity

and Liz's campaign.

Released the video himself,

then killed Aldo to tie up any loose ends.

Wicked theory, but I don't even think

it supports a fraud charge, let alone first-degree murder.

All you got is a dead guy

connected to the husband of some politician,

through some sports bar.

You can't put someone on trial for liking the same soccer team.

Believe me, I've tried.

I agree with our crown attorney.

The only way Todd Harding is going to see

the inside of a jail cell is if he confesses

to murdering Tatiana, or Aldo or both.

Do you have any leverage to get Todd talking?

Does mortality count?

You are sweating a lot, McCreigh.

You in detox? - Yeah, 100% clean, John,

unlike your financial records.

That's funny, coming from you.

I see the knife fight's started.

- Oh yeah. - Careful, Liz.

You don't want to seem glib about the recent murders.

Unless you're more cutthroat than I thought you were.

You see, now you got me going.

I'm dropping out of the race.

It's a good thing we have campaign insurance.

I'll announce it on-air tonight,

and release a statement tomorrow morning.

But wait. What? Liz, Liz, Liz...

Liz, honey,

you are just nervous.

You can win this. - I know I can.

And I'm not nervous.

But right now,

I have way more important things to focus on.

I want to ride an elephant in Sri Lanka,

and then I want to make you buy me

a stupidly big sapphire ring.

Liz, do you know

what has got me going all this time?

Is knowing that I have enough life left in me

to watch you win.

Come on.

You don't care about elephants and sapphires.

Do you?

I care about you.

And I know that and I believe you.

But you know what is most important to me right now?

Is watching you finish

what we have worked so hard for together,

fixing this city.

You, doing what you love.

That's all I care about.

Stand by, two minutes.

You are the person.

You are the good person.

It's your time.

Now, go out there and get it.

Sure, it's easy to say we need more affordable housing.

I need the Leafs to win the cup.

But where does the money come from?

Well, maybe it should come from your construction buddies.

The same buddies that-- - Do you ride the bus, John,

when you drop your kids off at UCC?

Mayor McCreigh, please let Councillor Graham--

Ever the doting husband.

If I didn't know he was a killer,

I might be jealous.

I think you can do better than Todd.

You built your platform off the public housing,

so how do you feel about the housing crisis

that our city is currently facing?

- That it is exactly what... - What's wrong with this picture?

We need to increase taxes on the wealthiest citizen.

She's great, but I'd be throwing away my vote.

Why do you say that?

Oh, the system's broken. Dice are loaded,

lies win over truth. Asshat McCreigh here,

he smokes a crack pipe, kisses a baby,

and it's fake news, love that guy.

John Graham, he stomps his little feet,

lines his drawers with cash.

But you know, he seems okay.

Liz Harding,

she's the anomaly.

She understands the issues

and knows what to do about them

because he cares, she cares deeply.

Should she be our next mayor?

Without a doubt.

Could even fix this city,

but I'm still not voting for her.

Why not?

Because her husband killed two people

to get her there.

It's Foxy, right?

Or is it Todd?

Although we met at the bar,

I didn't know you were married to Liz Harding.

Can I help you with something, Detective?

I actually got a tour of your office, today.

I saw your medals.

Star of Military Valour, that's quite the honour.

How'd that one come about?

That's not something I like to talk about.

That's okay, I know what you got it for.

Afghanistan, 2006. Ambush Alley.

All hell breaks loose,

and you lose four soldiers in five minutes.

So with time and options running out,

you take point

and single-handedly, you terminate the Taliban threat,

with just a machine gun and a rocket launcher.

That's an awful lot of war talk

from someone who's never been in one.

In any case,

that was a problematic mission.

So was this one.

You went into battle for love,

but all you got was collateral damage.

Oh, I know you didn't want to kill Tatiana Wynn

or Aldo Carbone.

You probably couldn't have killed Tatiana

if you'd had to look her in the eye.

She was bright,

she was shiny,

and she was just doing her job.

But she was on to you and you knew

that if anyone found out about it,

your wife's campaign would be dead.

But then again,

you will be too, soon enough.

Yeah. I'd say you've only got three months left.

All the anti-nausea drugs,

the funeral planning.

I'm fine.

Did you think she couldn't win on her own?

She can win. And she will.

No, not after this comes out. Murdering husband,

it's some pretty unpleasant optics.

Oh, you have no proof.

Yeah, but I won't stop until I find some.

How do you like your odds?

Well, as you say, I don't have much time left.

So try me.

I'm not worried about you. I'm thinking about Liz.

You see, my partner, here,

she's pretty eager for the debate to wind up

so she can take your wife in for questioning.

My wife is incorruptible.

Maybe.

I'm pretty sure she's not involved.

But she might be.

So we'll bring her in,

she'll be investigated,

and that will be front-page news.

'Cause those two sharks,

they'll smell blood and make a meal out of it.

Even if she walks away clean from all of this,

Liz's career will be dead before you are.

Todd, I think you mistook politics for war.

Because this isn't a war, it's a circus.

And two innocent people are dead.

So, if you come with me now,

I'll take your statement.

You acted alone, she had no knowledge of it.

I'll get my partner to stand down

and we'll keep this as quiet as we can

until after the election and Liz will probably win.

And when it does finally come out,

she'll have full, legitimate deniability.

She'll get to tell her side of the story.

Unwitting wife of a husband who went too far.

Then she'll have four years in office

to fix this place.

This is my battlefield confession?

Sure.

Any last words?

Colonel?

Do me one favour.

Walk me out the back.

I don't want to ruin this for her.

If it's any consolation,

she looks like she's doing just fine.

I can't imagine being unaware

of such blatant cronyism. But if I were,

perhaps, I wouldn't be fit to serve,

or council on the Planning Committee.

And when I say serve, I mean serve.

I'm not here to look at my face on the signs,

or name a street after myself.

I'm here to make a difference.

I'm not here for money or influence.

I'm Liz Harding,

and I'm here to serve you, Toronto.

You really think you can keep this out of the press

until election day? - Probably not.

Might even call Toronto Life myself.

That is pretty cynical, even for you.

I don't like politics.

But Tatiana did.

I'm booking a booth at the Four Seasons,

tomorrow night.

Buy that drink Tatiana never got to have.
