He's on the brink of buying out

his claim at dominion creek.

But with his water license expiring at the end of this season,

he may not be able to mine it next year.

Yeah, I've got a good crew.

I've got good equipment.

But my water license is up after this year,

and they're saying that it won't be ready

by April of next year.

It's not unique to you.

A lot of people are having these problems.

I will fully admit, I am not super knowledgeable about it, you know?

I mean, like, I'm still learning that side of things, and...

But, like...

- The whole business depends on it, right? - Yeah, I know.

You just have to decide what you can do,

- and what you want to do... - Yeah.

And how to start to lean into your shortcomings,

- instead of... hide away from them, right? - Yeah.

I'm a grown man. I've made a lot of bad decisions,

a lot of great, good decisions.

I've made a lot of decisions I'm not proud of,

but I made them.

- I'm cannot run from them. - Yeah.

Last year. I spent all year just being grateful

that I had another chance.

You know, ironically, my last payment is this year, right?

I'm sure not ready to...

And pack it in...

Right after I make the final payment on the place...

- Right. - Just 'cause there's no water license.

If it happened to me,

I would be doing everything I could

to have a huge season this year.

So that definitely puts a lot of pressure

- on this season, right? - Yep.

Nobody is as invested in it as you,

and that's the sad truth.

But at the end of the day...

I know that it feels like a massive mountain to hurdle,

but you're a survivor, Rick.

I just had a chat with Parker about the water license.

Yeah, he is right. It is my livelihood on the line,

and, no one's gonna fight harder for it than me.

You know, I've got a lot of gold to get.

Right now, my future is not guaranteed.

And if this year turns out to be our last chance

to get as much gold as we can out of Duncan creek,

then that's what we're gonna have to do, you know,

we need to get at least 1,500 ounces,

hopefully a hell of a lot more.

No matter what, at the end of the day, though,

for this year, I'm all in.

So you know how good it's been.

Back at Duncan creek,

Rick is on the brink of a massive payday,

sluicing the last piles of pay dirt

to come out of the richest pit he's ever mined,

rally valley.

In just two weeks,

it's already delivered nearly 500 ounces of gold,

worth $1.25 million.

In northern rally valley, you know,

I mean, that's been the stuff I've been looking for

since I came to this ground.

That was jackpot.

Unfortunately, it's coming to an end.

Yeah, we've got, you know, about a week's worth of pay left.

Now is time to do something else

that, Rick's got in mind,

as long as we can do it quick,

because monster red chews through dirt pretty quick.

So, this pile will be gone before you know it.

After Rick taps out rally valley,

he needs a new spot to keep the gold coming in.

And the plan is to move over, back over to the bench,

which we started last year.

Buzz is heading up there right now.

Rick's master plan

to smash through his season goal,

head half a mile north of rally valley,

across the creek,

to the bench cut with it's easy-to-access gold.

Last season, in just five weeks,

he hauled 450 ounces of gold

out of the seven-acre cut.

Now, he wants to start digging the pay

out of a five-acre extension

they stripped last year.

needs to stockpile bench cut pay

next to Rick's second wash plant, rocky,

ready to run

as soon as rally valley's pay pile ends.

We stripped this last year.

How is this still frozen?

Over winter, the bench cut was exposed

to sub-zero temperatures.

The ground is frozen solid.

Rick has massively miscalculated

how long it would take to thaw.

This is a disaster. I mean, I don't have a second option.

I have to come up with something.

And, right now, I have no clue what it is.

We've dived into this property...

Just headfirst, and in a massive way

and are spending, you know,

way more money than we ever have,

with the least amount of income.

Eight weeks into the season,

Parker schnabel is hemorrhaging millions of dollars

on two huge cuts at dominion creek,

but so far, with little reward,

just 576 ounces... Of his 10,000-ounce goal.

But right now, the sleuthing we're doing

is not even covering our costs.

So... the sinkhole continues to grow.

Parker is now at the point

where he needs at least 100 ounces a week

just to keep going.

I mean, as grim as things are right now,

I don't feel like we've totally lost the season.

Not yet.

Despite the troubles that we're having,

it is exciting.

And we'll just take it one day at a time,

and... try to not forget...

The big picture.

We just got to focus on that right now. One step at a time.

Parker's throwing everything he's got

at mining two enormous cuts

on his 7,500-acre dominion claim.

In the 20-acre long cut,

wash plant, Roxanne, is churning

through 250 yards of pay an hour.

Two miles away, big red is sluicing top gravels

in the 114-acre bridge cut.

Ten miles southwest, at Ken and Stuart's,

Parker's skeleton crew is three quarters of the way through

stripping an eight-acre cut.

We have Mitch in the long cut, Tyson and the bridge cut,

Damien down at Ken and Stuart's.

It's a really good group.

If we just move as much dirt as cheap as possible

as we can every day, then...

Things will be okay

I think.

Parker's saying, "keep sluicing."

And each day that is getting tougher and tougher.

We were really hoping, by this time in the season,

that the long cut would be all thawed out.

We've been fighting it from day one here.

This is the middle of summer,

and we're just still fighting frozen pay dirt.

All the permafrost in this cut,

there's so much ice in it.

As it's melting,

well, obviously, it turns to water,

and then, you know, it just saturates the dirt.

I hate...

Cream mushroom soup.

But it's the soup we're feeding to the plant right now.

Hate it more.

In the long cut,

21-year-old loader operator, Evan Kurtz,

is struggling to feed wash plant, Roxanne,

with wet, sloppy material.

We do not like...

This soup.

It just... Stacks on top of the grizzlies,

and makes your life a living hell.

It just doesn't want to go through, man.

Ha, ha, ha!

Hey, Mitch? You got a copy, Mitch?

Yeah, go ahead.

We got, up on the belt.

You've got to be kidding me.

Evan's got an issue with the plant right now!

So we just wanna get it shut down!

Man!

That is not good.

Roxanne's feeder conveyor is jammed.

And Mitch has also found a tear in the belt.

This will act just like a zipper.

If this gets caught on anything,

it'll just rip the belt right open.

We're gonna need to get Alec down here,

get Liam down here, everybody we can,

and get this thing fixed up as fast as possible.

Every hour the plant's not running,

pushes Parker further into the red.

We've got to figure out what caused this,

so we don't have any more problems.

There's rocks stuck in the tail pulley here, so it's...

Protruding out of the belt.

Yeah, buddy, that'll do it.

We've got a bunch of material built up down here

around our tail wheel, and when that happens,

it creates a bunch of resistance against the belt.

And also having all that rock and debris down there,

certainly is probably what caused our tear in the belt.

How bad is it in there?

It's right chock-full...

Of just super-fine sand, which means it was soupy

at one point when it went through.

How deep is it?

It's like...

There. It's like 18 inches.

That is... It's like just cemented to the belt.

Yeah, even the tail pulley is chock-full. Like.

I'm gonna hop in the mini hoe.

- Sounds good. I'll keep shoveling. - Okay.

We need dry dirt going up our belts.

And you can see this material here,

a lot of water in it.

This is really soupy stuff.

When you put this on your belts,

it makes a lot of material that sticks to the belt.

You know, there's not a lot we can do other than shut down Roxanne.

And, well, we know Parker isn't down for that.

You know, we can't afford any downtime.

And right now, that's, what we've got.

This needs to be shoveled, absolutely,

before we fire it back up.

We'll be shoveling here for a while.

At Parker's long cut,

sloppy pay has set like concrete

and jammed the feeder conveyor,

shutting down the wash plant, Roxanne.

This here, it's costing us downtime.

Downtime is a bad time.

Bud, I'm done in here.

It's looking better.

Conveyer drum cleared, Alec and Liam move on

to fixing the tear in the belt.

Two or three hours to get this re-seamed and running.

Put that on your wall.

they're sitting nice and happy.

We've been down for three and a half hours here,

but we're ready to fire it back up and get sluicing.

We've got water back at the plant!

We were down for a few hours, but thankfully,

now we're back running again,

and that's what matters the most.

King of the klondike, Tony beets,

is moving mountains

to reach his 5,000-ounce season goal.

The beets dynasty,

has already banked 1,607 ounces of gold

from the Indian river, worth over $4 million.

Tony's operation is stretched across two claims.

On the Indian river,

cousin, Mike, is on the up and up...

Sluicing comeback cut pay

with wash plants, sluice-a-lot,

and the shaker deck.

It's running good, getting some gold.

Forty miles away in paradise hill,

Tony's youngest son, Mike,

has built up a mega pile of pay

from the super pit, a gold-rich cut

they opened up last season.

But Tony's biggest moneymaker,

his 35-year-old trommel,

still hasn't sluiced a bucket of dirt this season.

This is one of the major pieces on the puzzle

of, getting sluicing.

After weeks of prepping the trommel,

Mike is struggling to fire up

the troublesome old pump

that sends water to the plant.

So Tony sends in beets veteran, len hoekstra,

to get it running.

Fire in the hole!

If we can't get this one running,

we don't have water, so we can't sluice.

So this is a big...

A big part of the whole operation.

Argh! I really hope I don't have to bleed this

the frustrating part right now is that

I can't fix nothing 'cause I don't know

what the hell is all wrong with it.

If my brother was here, I could send him and have him do this,

'cause he knows how the pump sets up.

He knows the mechanic things.

However, he's not here.

When I turn the preheat on,

it puts energy towards the glow plugs.

that cuts off fuel to the engine,

protecting it from overheating.

Now I just gotta go up

and start the plan and we'll be sluicing.

Hopefully, if we do really well, you know,

Rick did say he'd probably give us all

a good gold bonus this year.

At Duncan creek, Rick's crew are nearing the end

of the rally valley pay pile.

Pay, right now, is looking pretty slim.

And just a handful of buckets left.

And the pressure is on Rick

to find a new hotspot to mine.

You know, the season's got to go on.

We do have to hit our season goal, so...

We need ground and we need it fast.

Hey, man.

So, I've been doing some thinking,

and I've been doing some looking.

With no guarantee of a water license next year,

Rick is now focused on bringing in

as much gold as possible this season.

There's just a lot of things in the air right now,

especially with this water license the way it is.

So... This is all frozen here on the bench.

Right through the middle here,

there's a spot where we strip the top off of it

and then we mined up to it.

And it wasn't that great...

But we're pretty desperate for ground right now,

so, I think that

maybe we go over there and look at that.

From the bench cut, buzz travels 500 yards north

to a five-and-a-half acre stretch of open ground

next to the old creek cut,

which Rick thinks should have an easy to access pay layer.

This looks like a good spot to pull a sample from.

After buzz opens a section of the pay layer,

Rick comes out to test it.

You want to, just give me one bucket out here?

If we can pull some gold out of this

and run it to the plant that means we can keep going right now.

So, that's all that matters.

We just need some dirt with gold in it.

I really hope there's some gold in this dirt.

It's there. You see that?

There's probably, there might be

fifteen, 20 colors in there.

Yep, right on there. Right on there.

It's very, very fine.

But we can catch that fine gold.

It's there, I, it's worth running.

I, I'd say let's,

as soon as you get a little bit more of that stripped off,

the last of the rally valley stockpile.

We've spent three years digging at rally valley.

We finally get to the bottom of it.

I mean, it's been paying off big time.

It's great to get the last gold out of there,

but I don't know, it's kinda bittersweet, I guess.

The amount of gold that we've gotten out of this,

I mean, I can only hope we see something like that again.

But, it's done, and we're gonna be moving on.

Tony beets is on a roll.

Both of his wash plants are running at Indian river,

sluice-a-lot and the shaker deck.

And son Mike is finally sluicing

with the trommel at paradise hill.

It's nice to be finally be sluicing again.

I hope it keeps on until the end of September.

I wanna sluice until most of my cuts are done.

My pump has got a bit of motion in it.

So, it's starting to grind against itself,

so it's starting to shave itself.

Which means if I keep trying to use this one,

eventually if it grinds thin enough, it'll snap,

and it can cause tons of more damage.

So, yet again, I am down from sluicing.

I'm just annoyed.

Because I'm hoping to get this done

so I can actually get sluicing,

but like with everything,

one more problem, one more problem

with no easy solutions.

At paradise hill,

Mike is shut down with a broken water pump.

So, overall, it's pretty good.

Roxanne is very good at making dirt disappear.

So, we're definitely got our hands full here,

just trying to keep the plant running.

In Parker's 20-acre long cut,

foreman Mitch blaschke is battling

to keep wash plant Roxanne fed with pay dirt.

We have just a lack of resources,

a lack of resources and machines,

a lack of resources and operators.

Parker's got us all over the place.

We also have acquired a lot of new operators.

You know, when you're out here trying to achieve

the maximum you can each day,

and then you take people that are new to it

and put that in the mix,

it's just another, you know, layer in the,

in the tough factor here of, of getting all this done.

So, this is my first week working for Parker,

and so far it's been really good.

Everybody's super nice and welcoming.

I'm happy that I got this opportunity

to come up to the Yukon

and find out what's gold mining all about.

Yeah, I don't wanna make guesses on what this will be yet,

because I don't wanna jinx it in any way.

But if this could be another record setter,

it would they help us a lot with getting to that goal.

of just not finding any gold, just working out a lot.
