Original subtitles

- Two trains head toward each other

on a 100-kilometer track.

- That doesn't seem safe.

- If one's going 75 kilometers per hour

and the other 50, at what distance will they collide?

- I mean, where's the conductor?

He's creating chaos on the tracks.

- Carry one, and 40 kilometers.

- That's what I was going to say.

[air horn blares]

- Good morning, Mapleview Middle!

It's time for our Manatees to swim on over

to the sports field for field hockey practice.

- Why would they name our sports teams

after a slow-moving sea animal?

- Good question. Also, what's field hockey?

- Our seven-time champs have a big game Friday.

Go Manatees! [air horn blaring]

[all cheering]

Also, not confirmed, but I may be doing

a DJ set in the parking lot after,

so make sure to stick around for that.

- Deirdre, field hockey is powerful, passionate,

and possibly Peabody-worthy.

I would love to get an interview.

- Okay.

- Getting out of your classroom.

[school bell rings] - That's it for today.

Please hand in yesterday's assignment.

- I forgot it at home.

Uh.

- Yes, Julie?

- I forgot my assignment at home.

Could I hand it in later?

- If I let you hand this in late, the next thing you know,

you'll be handing everything late.

You'll flunk out of school,

your dads will tolerate it, but only for a few years.

You'll say you'll get back on your feet,

but you won't, because you don't know how to deliver.

Is that what you want? Hmm?

No extensions, Julie.

- Oh.

Oh!

- What?

- I just remembered it's in my locker.

So can I go grab it from my locker,

which it's definitely in?

- You have five minutes to get it to me,

then I'll need to give you an incomplete.

- Five minutes. You got it.

I'm going to run home. - I just did the math.

You live too far. You'll never make it in time.

- Starting now.

- Go!

[exciting music]

- [grunts]

Just going to my locker!

- Who is that?

- I don't know.

- [exhales] Oh!

Oh.

Ah!

Go, yes!

- [sighs]

- I'm sure she'll be here any second.

[printer whirring]

- Come on!

Come on, come on!

I got it!

I'm coming!

I got it!

Whoo!

- So, math.

[chuckles] What a subject, am I right?

So many numbers.

- Here. [panting]

- You're out of breath from going to your locker?

- She's just extremely out of shape.

- Yeah.

- Thank you.

- You did it. Good job.

- [exhales] - Hey!

Just the girl we were looking for.

- You should join the field hockey team.

We lost a striker, and we could really use a runner like you.

- Who, me?

- Sports field, tomorrow, 3:00.

- What just happened?

- I think you just got scouted.

[upbeat music]

- Oh, yeah

All right

Oh, yeah

- Why haven't we thought about this before?

You're fast.

You can make the field hockey team.

- And hang out with the jocks? [scoffs]

You're forgetting who you're talking to.

There's no way that Julie Graham-Chang

will fit in with the jocks.

- Talking in third person is the first step.

I'm beginning to think we have popularity all wrong, Julie.

[upbeat music]

Does being an athlete make you popular?

I mean, everyone always cheers for the field hockey team.

Look at Deirdre.

She's on the cover of "The Manatee Mirror."

You could be the next cover girl.

- Lydia, I have no idea how to play field hockey.

The most athletic thing I've ever done is watch "Space Jam."

- Don't worry. You'll make the team for sure.

[whistle trills] Huddle up.

Okay. Here's the play.

That means plan.

[whistle trills]

[cheering]

Okay, ready? Popular on three.

both: One, two--

- Three. - Popular!

Oh. Okay.

- Let's try it again.

both: One, two--

- Three. - Popular!

- Popular.

- [groans] - Sorry.

[soft upbeat music]

- Sports.

One of the most extraordinary forms of human activity.

I'm going for, like, a real human interest story here,

so none of that clich stuff athletes usually say, mm?

The voice you're about to hear is that of Deidre Baig,

captain and leading scorer on the Mapleview Manatees.

- Glad to be here.

- You are just one win away from the greatest season

in the history of middle school girls' field hockey,

tier B.

This must be the pinnacle of your career.

- I'm just trying to get out there and get our shots in.

- Hmm.

- Was that a question?

- You are at the precipice of greatness.

That must be a lot of stress, you know.

What does that do to your psyche?

- I just keep my eye on the prize.

- Look, Deirdre.

Um, we're trying to go beyond the field.

I think our listeners would love to hear

about the personal cost of success.

- I'm just excited to go out there and play field hockey.

[upbeat music]

- [chuckles nervously]

- Julie, you don't need a helmet for this.

- Or the skates.

- This isn't ice hockey.

- Oh. Well, you know what they say.

You can never be overprepared.

- So you can't use your feet-- - Mm-hmm.

- Or your body, and the most important rule is--

- Have fun.

- No physical contact with the other team.

- That's even better.

- Any questions so far?

- Yeah, why me?

I've never been described as athletic

or participatory or coordinated.

- Look, you can teach all the other skills,

but you can't teach speed.

- All right, guys. Let's run some drills.

- Oh, I'm not supposed to run with power tools.

- And go!

- Where? - Now!

- Now? - Just run!

[exciting music]

Julie, you have to--

- [grunts]

- [sighs] Run back.

- Have the ball in line with your left foot, and swing.

- [laughs]

Look, Kelly, Deirdre, I appreciate your enthusiasm.

Both my dads tried to teach me how to catch a ball.

Both gave up.

I suggest you do the same.

- We believe in you, Julie Graham-Chang.

- Okay.

- So Kelly, you've been with the Manatees

for two seasons now.

You must be feeling the pressure to bring home

the championship this year.

- Oh, uh--

[soft upbeat music]

I'm just really excited to get--

- Beyond getting excited to get out there, um,

maybe you can comment on the mounting pressure on the team?

You know, the struggles of being elite athletes.

You know, someone must be cracking under the stress.

- Um...

Well...

Between you and I...

I think all of us are just really excited to get out there

and play some field hockey.

[knock at door]

- Well, I have good news and bad news.

- Okay. - I made the team.

- [screams] Oh, my God, you made the team?

That's incredible news! What position are you?

- Sitting on the bench. I'm Deirdre's backup.

- That is bad news. I'm so sorry.

- What? No, that was the good news.

I get to be on the field hockey team

without ever having to play field hockey.

- So then what's the bad news?

- Well, there's one more thing I have to do

if I'm on the field hockey team.

- Mm-hmm?

- Initiation. - So?

You get to hang out with them and learn about being popular.

- Or they'll figure out I'm not really a jock

and bully me for the rest of the school year.

Sorry, Lydia, but there's absolutely no way

you can talk me into this one.

How do you do that?

Every time.

- I'm very persuasive.

We're at school, and it's after 5:00.

This is so cool.

I bet even Janitor Sam is gone.

[gentle music]

You're going to do great, Jules.

- It's burrito night. I can't miss burrito night.

- Listen.

This is our best chance at popularity.

You got this.

- Hey, Julie. Come on.

- Now, go have fun.

Don't forget about me when you're popular!

[music winds down]

What if she forgets about me when she's popular?

[whimpers]

[groans]

- I know I'm new to field hockey,

but isn't it important to see?

- We've got a surprise for you.

- More dark.

Great.

[cheers and applause]

Oh!

Whoa.

That's my last name.

- It's for you, GC.

- No one's ever called me that, ever!

[laughs] Oh.

- Okay.

Now for the initiation.

- That wasn't it?

[ominous music]

- Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.

This looks incredible.

- Ooh.

- When was the last time we had a date night?

- Oh, I think before we adopted.

- [exhales]

- Wait till you taste this.

It's to die for.

- Yum, yum. - [laughs]

[knock at door]

[knock at door]

[sighs] - [clears throat]

Oh.

Hi, Lydia.

What are you doing here? - Brought this.

It's burrito night, isn't it?

- Uh--

- [sighs] Julie's not here.

So I guess extra burritos for me?

What's this?

- Listen, Lydia.

We're trying to have a night alone while Julie's out.

- So no burrito night?

This is how it starts.

First burrito night disappears, then Julie stops talking to us.

- She's been gone for two hours.

- We're losing her, boys.

To field hockey.

Soon we won't be the most important things

in her life anymore.

She'll forget about us.

- She will?

- Okay, everyone. Let's make a circle.

All right.

We're going to go around and give everyone a compliment.

I'll start.

Deirdre, I like how good you are at field hockey.

- Marie, I like

how good you are at field hockey.

- Julie, I-- - You don't have to say it.

I know I'm terrible at field hockey.

- I was going to say I like your honesty.

But I like that you're going to be good at field hockey.

[laughter]

[upbeat music]

- I mean, what happens when Julie travels with the team?

- [gasps]

- Who's going to tuck her in at night?

- [gasps]

Wait.

Who is going to tuck her in at night?

- Well--

- No, no, no, no, no.

We can't lose burrito night.

[sighs]

Thanks.

all: One, two, three!

Jelly roll!

[cheering, laughing]

- To the left! To the left!

[yelling]

Hey, guess what?

Guess what?

We are gonna win on Friday!

[cheering]

[laughter]

- You're Julie's best friend, Lydia.

Field hockey isn't going to change that.

And James, Julie is finally trying something new.

We should support it, even if we don't understand it.

You know I'm right.

Lydia, if you miss her while she's playing,

find a way to join in.

- Oh, I can't.

Running's against my personal beliefs.

- Then find a different way to participate

and be there for her.

As opposed to here, with us.

- But how?

- Cheerleading, team mascot. Oh!

A job at the snack bar.

- This isn't a '90s movie, Mr. Chang,

and I don't have the hand dexterity for handling snacks.

- [sighs] Well, what can you do?

- Math.

Not much for field hockey.

- Wait. Math.

Field hockey is full of statistics.

You can look at which is a better team

from a math point of view.

- I thought you said you weren't a sports guy?

- I'm not.

I'm a Brad Pitt guy.

He was amazing in "Moneyball."

[both chuckle] - He really was.

- I know, right?

So good. - Yeah.

[ethereal music]

[air horn blaring]

- Hello, Mana-muh-muh-muh-muh-Manatees!

It's game day for our sea cows.

So let's hear your best moo

as our field hockey team takes to the field.

[air horn blares]

- I need a soundbite.

I need it punchy, and I need it now.

Surely you have something to add to the discourse?

Anything our listeners should know about the unseen

dangers of your craft?

The sweltering heat underneath the suit?

Um, some thoughtful insight into what

goes through your head when the mascot mask

is mercifully taken off?

I--I can see I've touched a nerve.

Is there anything you would like to say

that we've never heard before?

Uh, door? Principal's office? Detention?

No. Uh, entrance?

Uh, outside?

Uh, sidewalk?

Um, bleachers?

Field?

You're talking about the field.

Okay.

Um, you're--you're excited.

You're--

you're excited to get out there and play some field hockey.

[sighs]

- Okay, Manatees.

We came here to do two things--

make memories and chew bubble gum.

And we're all out of bubble gum.

- Manatees on three.

all: One, two, three, Manatees!

- Yeah! Go Manatees!

[rock music]

Go Manatees!

Go Manatees!

Yeah!

Whoo!

Go, go--oh.

[cheering]

Whoo!

Come on, Deirdre!

Come on!

- Whoo!

- Go, Deirdre!

[whistle trills]

- Oh! Oh, a story!

[shutter snapping]

Uh, I mean, oh, no.

I hope she's okay.

[shutter clicking] - We'll help you up. Come on.

We got you, we got you.

One, two, three.

[grunts] There we go.

- It's okay. - It's okay.

All right, we got you. Come on.

- Are you okay?

Hey, it's okay, it's okay. - Hey, over here.

- Slowly, slowly. It's okay.

- Oh, my gosh.

Are you okay?

- You've got to sub in for me.

It's all up to you.

[tense music]

- Medic!

[shutter clicking]

I can't do this.

I can't be the reason why we lose.

- Hey.

Look at me.

You can't let us down if you go out on the field and try.

- Just like we jelly roll as one, we play as one.

- I believe in you.

You've got this, GC.

[inspirational music]

[whistle trills]

- Girls, here we go!

[grunts]

- Maybe not.

[whistle trills]

[crowd booing]

- Are they mooing or booing?

- Well, they were mooing.

Now they're booing.

- [sighs] - Okay, don't listen to them.

Just focus on the game.

- [sighs]

- Julie! Julie, over here!

Listen, I've run the numbers.

- What numbers?

- With Deirdre out, the next best player is Kelly.

So that's who they're going to target.

But the player with the highest accuracy is actually Marie.

Get the ball to Marie.

- I don't know how to do that.

I'm not athletic! - Exactly.

You're avoidant.

You wanted to avoid tryouts and initiation.

So avoid playing.

Get the ball to Marie.

Whoo, Julie!

[whistle trills]

[exciting music]

[applause]

- Pass it, Julie! - Come on, come on, come on!

- Pass it, Julie!

[cheers and applause]

- That's my best friend!

That's Julie! Whoo!

- Against all odds, the Manatees win it!

They went out on the field, and they've played their best!

Oh, no.

What have I-- what have I become?

[cheering]

- I never thought I could be a jock.

Thank you for believing in me.

I can't wait till the next game!

- The next game? This one's the championship.

The season's over.

- Oh.

Well-- [cheering]

We won the championship!

- So how does it feel to be a sports star,

Julie Graham-Chang?

I mean, GC.

[both chuckle]

- It was great.

Being a part of the team. - Mm-hmm.

- Hearing the crowd.

But once the game ends, so does the cheering.

- Yeah.

Well, you didn't make the Hall of Fame,

but you did get a taste of popularity,

and that's what's important.

- I think what's most important is facing your fears

and trying your best.

- Okay, Julie.

- I give this experiment

6 pucks out of 10.

Wickets?

Baskets?

- How about sprints? I'll race you.

- [laughs] Come here.

[laughter]
