So how'd you end up out here,

Well, it was very intentional
for the most part.

Ben and I wanted to have
a big adventure out west.

Ben's my husband.

Was my husband.

He passed on 18 years ago.

We came out here
to be veterinarians.

We loved animals
and we loved the outdoors

so what could be
more perfect?

So we bought this
ramshackle place here

and we started
fixing it up.

We gave free care to the folks
that live around here

and took care of dogs
and cows

and the occasional pig.

But it was the horses
that we truly loved.

You ever have a horse
or been around horses?

Well, they are truly
the most magnificent

of all of God's creatures.

They're big, strong,
magnificent animals

with big hearts.

Between you and me I'm surprised
they let us hang around them.

I guess they're more patient
then we are.

So not long after
we came here

Ben and I found this herd
of wild horses up in the hills

and we started
taking care of them.

You know, we left 'em
alone at first

until they could
get used to us,

but finally they became
like our family.

Ben and I promised each other
that we would

always take care of them as long
as we were alive.

And we have.

At last I have, now,
by myself

those 18 years
I was talking about.

What about this trailer?

Oh.

Ben and I kinda had
the wanderlust.

So we bought
this old trailer here

with the intention of
seeing places

when we finally retired.

We'd stay here
and take care of horses

and then go see what other
places in the world there were

that we might care about.

But then Ben died.

And I found myself
hanging out in the trailer.

I guess pretending that
Ben and I were out there

on the road together.

Well, they're what
I like to call

fancy hat cowboys.

that's cowboy about them.

out of a wild herd

get close enough to them.

So they hit the ranches
around here

and take horses
that are stabled.

They sound dangerous.

either one of 'em

could pour water
out of a boot

with the instructions
on the heel.

But you do have to
be alert, you know?

I take care of a lot
of sick horses all the time

and that makes us
a pretty easy target

for guys like that.

Why is Maria
your favorite horse?

Well, for one thing,
she's my oldest.

She's been, let's see,
she was born 18 years ago,

about the time
that Ben passed on.

And she's about
to have a foal.

a baby horse.

Eighteen sounds
