that he had had five strokes,

and then you go into a state of fear.

A panic mode.

You can kind of tell when the doctor's
in tears that, um, not good.

Worst possible news.

football manager, Sven-Göran Eriksson,

says he's been diagnosed
with terminal cancer.

[Swedish news broadcast overlaps]

[reporter 2] Around a year left to live.

[Sven] Yeah, it's cancer, I have...

and that's it.

So if you ask me,
I should like to start again

[chuckles] from the beginning.

[Tord Grip] What he has done,

no one has done that.

[journalist] He's won titles in Sweden,
Portugal and Italy.

Sven is one of a kind.

He has an extraordinary personality.

The first team I coached was Degerfors.

In 1978, we went up one division higher

and that gave me the chance
to coach Gothenburg.

Sometimes I've been lucky
being at the right place, right moment.

[speaking indistinctly]

Without Gothenburg,
my life would have been different.

[man in Swedish] Sven-Göran Eriksson,
a thin little man from Värmland

arrived in Gothenburg
as an unknown four years ago.

[Sven in English]
We were an amateur team.

One was a plumber,
one was building houses.

I had a job as a teacher.

[Ann-Britt Larsson in Swedish]
He asked for a day off.

I said if I give you this opportunity now,
and you reach the big time

you owe me 100 Krona.

He didn't have the same conviction as me,

but I knew I was right.

Great positioning.

[Sven in English] I was very nervous.

No one in that team knew who I was.

I came from the woods
up in the north of Sweden.

- [crowd cheering]
- [players shouting indistinctly]

[Sven] We won the league,
we won the Swedish Cup.

And we got to the finals of the UEFA Cup.

And then they think
I understand football.

[laughs]

[in Swedish]
That a final could become a reality

is nothing short of a miracle
for twenty or so ordinary Swedes.

Everyone is gearing up for the biggest
football celebration of the year.

[crowd cheering]

[commentator in English]
Gothenburg are pressing...

Corneliusson,
it's a play in the middle...

And Gothenburg
has taken the lead against Hamburg.

[Sven] So we beat them three-nil.

[commentator] What a moment
for Sven Gorran Eriksson's team.

[cheering]

[Sven] Shouldn't be possible,
but it was.

- [crowd cheering]
- [players cheering]

[in Swedish] Say something, Glenn.

I feel like a bird.

[laughs]

I became rather famous.

[reporter in Swedish]
Now the boy from Torsby

has suddenly become a football authority.

Sven-Göran Eriksson - do you see
what you've done here?

It's wonderful to feel like this.

[Sven in English] That was
the ticket for me to leave Sweden.

[in Swedish] Let's go out, Ami.

Okay. We take a tour in Torsby.

The village is 5,000 people, maybe.

Wood was important, of course.

It's wood everywhere. [chuckles]

Here is the place I grew up in.

It was seven, eight families
living in this house.

One bedroom and kitchen.

Shower was once a week in the river
or in the kitchen.

Happy! [chuckles]

One of the first agents in Sweden
phoned me and said,

"Do you want to go to Benfica?"

When those occasions came,
I always said yes.

Because, yeah, I felt it was
bigger than I had came from.

My parents and my grandparents,
they didn't travel.

I think they went to Stockholm
once in their lives.

[chattering indistinctly]

When you're coming,
new, young, Swedish, a little bit boring,

you're coming to a lively Benfica...

quite different.

The first thing when we landed,

they took me to the trophy room.
[chuckles]

And there,

you understand... [chuckles]

This is a big club.

I think there were 15 directors
of the club who resigned

because they said
you cannot take a Swedish manager.

[commentator]
Sven Erickson from Gothenburg,

won the UEFA Cup two years ago,

and last year they reached
that same final again with Benfica.

[Sven] So, after one year,
if I said, "The sun is green,"

"Yeah, mister, the sun is green."

Then one day, it came a car
after me, chu-chu-chu.

I thought it was a private police
or something like that.

No. Roma was interested

"Wow," I thought.

[in Swedish] It's a bit of a drop.
Shall I just go for it, do you think?

You try too.

[Lina in English]
Dad is very determined, I would say.

But I admire my father
for the amount of

different jobs that he's taken
in all parts of the world.

They're very, very different cultures,

they're very different ways of working,

and he's always just
tackled it straight on.

[Roberto Mancini in Italian]
I was with him for many years.

Sven is one of a kind.

[reporter in English] Roberto Mancini,

captain, of course,
of the Sampdoria squad,

the highest scoring player ever
in their history and, without doubt,

one of the smoothest men in Serie A.

[Mancini in Italian] During that era

the Italian league
was the most important in the world.

[Buco Nero playing]

With the best players
and the best coaches you could find.

We were used
to only having Italian managers.

He was calm even
in the toughest circumstances.

It was a time of change
for tactics as well,

and he had completely different ideas.

[Sven in English] I was in Italy
15 years, something like that.

It was fantastic time.

[Mancini in Italian]
He won everywhere he went.

He was one of the best managers in Europe.

[David Platt in English]
There's been a great deal of discussion

about him going to other places,

and it's to a credit to him
of what he's done here at Sampdoria.

[Lina] He was fearless,

going for new challenges
and not being scared of failing.

[reporter in Swedish] In 1974,
Lazio won their only league title to date.

[music continues playing]

[Mancini in Italian]
He won seven trophies in three years.

The Super Coppa,
the European Supercup, the Winners' Cup.

But bringing the Scudetto back to Rome
after so many years

was something unbelievable.

[in English] What he has done
as a manager,

no one else in Sweden has done that.

[Sven] That was the peak.

[reporter in Swedish]
Did you think it would feel like this?

You have to remember
that there will be grey days as well.

Things can go badly at any time.

[melancholic music playing]

[in English] It was a shock.

It's one of those which will not go away,

but you can slow them down, hopefully.

I have no pain,

but I know it's there.

One day, it will take you.

Before that day,
live instead of sitting down

thinking about what
and when will it happen.

We'll see

if I have some extra time.

Overtime.

I always been very bad to plan the future.

I take it as it comes.

[crowd chants indistinctly]

[Beckham] As a nation,
we were struggling.

[commentator] And a red card
for David Beckham.

[journalist] Childish, petulant,
selfish, irresponsible.

[reporter] The death of England's hopes
in Saint-Etienne.

[Beckham] When you go through
difficult times playing for your country,

you can sometimes be deflated.

[reporter] The anguish was too much
for one armchair supporter,

who threw his television
out of the window.

Concord flew the squad back to England,

where the inquest was well underway
on what should, could and might have been.

There were certain things
that shouldn't have happened.

But we've got to build now for the future.

There was so much talk around
foreign managers coming in,

and obviously, as an England player,

you know, we wanted a manager

that would come in
that would kind of bring the fans back.

So I got a phone call
from Athole Still, the agent,

and he said, "Do you want the job?"

"Athole," I said,
"I have an extremely good job."

"I won the league last season.
And then I'm Swedish," I said.

"You can't ask a Swede
to be the manager of England."

I had to think 24 hours.

England, you can't say no. [chuckles]

I would have regretted that all my life,
I suppose.

Well, more or less.

[reporter 1] The man who will take
charge of England is 52 years old.

Eriksson is a son of a truck driver.

His hobbies include
reading Tibetan poetry.

[reporter 2]
There are rumblings of discontent

from some English Premiership managers

passed over for a Swede.

Almost insulting,

and to bring someone in
who doesn't understand our culture,

that needs a co-operation.

[Ken Bates] The most successful
English manager last year finished sixth.

And that's hardly
an inspiration to us all.

He has the competence.

He has the advantage of having
lived before in a foreign country.

[fan 1] He's done well with Lazio,

so why can't he do
the same thing with England?

[fan 2] What's the use
in having a national squad

if you're going to have a foreign manager?

[fan 3] Try and get the best man
for the job.

[fan 4] Have these foreign coaches
got some magic wand that we don't have?

[FA chief] England has not won
the World Cup since 1966.

So I think we have to be a bit wider
thinking than we have been in the past.

[camera shutters clicking]

[chattering indistinctly]

[Sven] Hello.

[journalist 1] It's described
as the toughest job in the world.

How are you going to handle the pressure?

[chuckles]

I'm very happy about that.

How I'm going to handle it, well,

difficult job, for sure,
but great, great honour.

[journalist 2] What is
your knowledge of...

[Sven] One of the first questions was
who is the left back of,

I don't remember which team it was.

And I didn't have a clue.

Well, of course I'm not...

I don't know everything
about English football

because I've been working for the last
13 years in Italy and Portugal.

[journalist 3] Twenty-four years
as a coach, one English player.

It's not a great reference.

[Sven] No.

No, I had at least two.

[journalist 3] Two English players
in twenty-four years...

The football is too good here
and they don't want to leave.

Can I ask you
what qualities you feel you have

compared to, say, your predecessor?

Well, I don't think I should answer that.

It would not be fair.

[journalist 3] What do you make
of the foreign contingent in this country?

I think to have a lot of foreigns,

I think it's good for the football
in the country.

[journalist 4] Were there any reservations

about taking over a country
that's not your country?

No, it's England.

I mean, as I told you.

[journalist 5] Sven, what was your
main reason for taking your role...

[FA member] Sorry,

[Sven] I was invited for a cup of tea
with Tony Blair.

"Shall we take a bet?"
is the first thing he saying.

"Who keeps the job longest?
You or me?"

We have two impossible jobs.

[camera shutters clicking]

That was a new sensation
when I came to England.

How they treat you, the press.

[Wallis] This cliche of in Britain,

we like to build people up
and then tear them down.

My experience of many years
in Fleet Street

is we don't have to tear them down.

As a tabloid newspaper,

what you're looking for in a story
is the unusual.

The water cooler moment,

"Did you read that?"

Whether that was scandal or whether it was

an extraordinary secret
of their private life.

The British public, they loved it.

Most people's initial impressions
of Sven were,

"Who is this guy?"

Very unprepossessing.

He seemed dull.

But Sven came with surprises.

You assumed he would be
with a Norwegian housewife

because that's what he looked like.

And he appeared with this stunning,
raven-haired Italian beauty.

And you sort of went, "What?"

[interviewer]
Shall we talk a little bit about Nancy?

Yeah, if you want.

[Nancy Dell'Olio]
I've been spoiled by life.

I've been spoiled
by people next to me,

I've been spoiled by myself.

That time was fascinating, amazing.

Completely insane.

Ah, glasses.

[laughs]

The lights are so strong.

I was the partner of Sven-Göran Eriksson

since 1999 and we were together
almost 10 years.

The first impression
that I had about Sven,

people in power

always have an extra, extra sex appeal.

Happened that I fell in love.

It was not something
that I was looking for.

I was married and, uh...

And I left my husband
to start my journey with Sven.

- Bellissimo! Enjoy! Enjoy!
- Enjoy! Enjoy!

[Dell'Olio] We were Sven and Nancy

since the first day.

[inaudible]

She loved it. The tension.

[shouting indistinctly]

She was a lady
from the upper class in Rome.

She liked to go out with important people.

I was the First Lady of English football

and never going to be
another one after me.

[chuckles]

Together, we will dominate
the world of football.

I will be king

and you, my queen.

[crowd laughing]

The press were
absolutely obsessed with me.

And I think this was really, for Sven,

difficult for his narcissism.

[shutter clicking]

[Sven] In the beginning, I...

I didn't react very much.

But you don't change people
at a certain age.

It was not peace in my house always.
[chuckles]

[Dell'Olio] I have
a very strong personality,

but so does Sven, in a different way.

I don't know,
Dad's avoiding duty here.

Most people tend to stress a lot.

I don't think my father stresses much.

He kind of has the ability to say,
"This is my job.

"I'm gonna do it to 100 percent."

"Then I can't do anything more."

Salt and pepper.
That's that. [chuckles]

[Johan] Very positive outlook
on pretty much everything.

[Lina] Whenever we speak to him
on the phone, I'm like,

"Hey, Dad, how's it going?"

He's like, "Yeah, I'm good.
Everything's fine."

It's like the standard answer.

- It's like, yeah, but things aren't fine.
- [Johan] Yeah.

Are you okay?

- [Sven] I am fine.
- [chuckles]

Supervising.

[Sven] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
That's important.

Very important. Yeah.

He is slowly adapting to his new reality,

which I can't even begin to understand
what that must be like for him.

[Johan] Dad handled it
like he handles everything.

Full on. Good attitude.

He just prefers to, you know,

do whatever we normally do, have dinners,
talk about, you know, normal stuff.

- Take a seat, please.
- Yes.

[exhales]

I have feelings,
but I don't show them.

I'm not shouting,

jumping on the bench, screaming.

But that's my way of being.

[chattering indistinctly]

To have a football team
and treat football players,

it's like to have children.

And children,

if you only shout at them,
I don't think they will learn.

I loved him from day one.

He made me captain.

And the confidence that he had in me
was so important.

The way he protected the players,

the way he treated the players,
it was a breath of fresh air.

There was a relaxed atmosphere
around bringing

that fun back into playing for England.

[laughing]

[Henry Winter] Sven's initial impact
was just huge.

Sven was just not tied down
by all the years of hurt.

He just sort of came in
and just calmed everyone

and said "It's a game,
have a few bits of fun with it."

You could sense the mood
lifting amongst fans,

but everything changed
with one afternoon in Munich.

[crowd cheering]

[Gary Lineker] Yes, here we go again.
Welcome to Munich.

There are always great occasions,

but be warned,
it could be an uncomfortable watch.

A couple of stats for you.

England haven't won
in Germany for 36 years,

and the Germans have only lost
one World Cup qualifier ever.

Tonight is a massive test for him.

After the 90 minutes,
we'll all know just how good this side is.

Sven, please!

[Winter] So tight
in that qualifying group,

England had to win.

[Sven] I remember that the press,

you know, they didn't give us much hope.

[commentator] Neuville to Jancker!
It's a goal for Germany!

[Sven] Shit. Absolutely shit.

And it was too easy.

Sol Campbell, too slow.

One hundred kilos,

you couldn't expect him to be quick.

[commentator] Only six minutes gone.

always wanted us to play.

I wake up in the morning early,
then I looked out from the sleeping room.

And I think there were 100 people outside
and more and more photographs,

and in the middle of all these,
Athole still phones me and said,

"Sven," like whispering,

"tell your lady
not to read the press today."

I said, "Athole,
they're 100 outside already."

How you feeling?

I remember when this story broke,

I didn't believe it.

[Piers Morgan] I came in on Friday morning
to be informed that we had a big one.

I was told that we had incontrovertible
evidence that it was true.

It goes on.

[Wallis] He's bedding Ulrika.

How did that happen?

[Sven] Going out with a woman shouldn't
take that portion of space and interest.

Well, it has nothing to do with football.

[reporter] Have you any comments
for the Daily Mirror?

We just wondered
who your first choice of selection was?

Whether it was Nancy or Ulrika?

[scoffs]

A week ago, he was a national hero,

now he has become the butt
of a national joke.

[Sue Carroll] This was the man who
was everything you wanted in a leader.

You know, sensible haircut,
smart suit.

Squeaky clean.

And he's not showing
the greatest of moral judgement.

I think that's a bit worrying.

But sex is one of the many
good things in life for all of us.

[Carroll] This is the man who's
responsible for 22 young men.

[Sven] She was not married.
I was not married.

[reporter] Why should we expect
these standards from Sven

when we don't expect it
from our politicians?

Whichever way you dress it up,
he's behaved pretty foolishly.

[Sven] Yeah, probably,
I was stupid, but...

I think I didn't do anything criminal,
I didn't

really disturb anyone.

The stupidity of Sven.

After Sven's first scandal,

I wanted to leave him.

I didn't want to admit to myself

that there was a possibility
that I made a mistake.

That I left everything for him.

[in Italian]
I'll need something that is very "Nancy"!

[Dell'Olio in English] My lawyer said,
"Give him another chance.

"But think what you can get from this."

And then through the opposite gates,

taking the gathered media by surprise...

[Sven] The Italian one and myself.

It went on as long as I was
an England manager,

because I could see in front of me,

if I break up,

it would be... Phew!

I was a little bit afraid,
but anyhow.

It became what it became.

[people shouting indistinctly]

I think he's done a great job so far

and we should leave him to carry on
with what he's been doing.

As long as England win,
that's the main thing, innit?

[crowd chanting]

[reporter] At shops nationwide,
baskets are filling up for the World Cup.

There's Union flag boxers,

England quilt covers, England hats,

even a cereal seemingly
dedicated to Captain Beckham.

[honking]

[Sven] For a big tournament,

I think that's very special English.

Everybody talks football, everybody.

You are extremely proud.

I think that was the greatest job,
for him and for me.

[Beckham] It's always exciting
on the lead up to a World Cup.

But in the back of your mind,
you're thinking,

"If I get injured, I'm going to miss it."

But, really, you know,
I was never a player

that would think about it too much
that I wouldn't go into a tackle.

[man] This is the second metatarsal bone.

[woman] Second metatarsal bone.

I probably should have thought
about it a little bit more.

That was a crazy time.

People always say,
"There was a picture of your foot."

And I'm like, "Yeah, I know. I know."

"And there were people
praying for your fitness,"

and I'm like, "I know."

and place your hand on David's foot,

and do believe that you are
unleashing healing.

Sven said,

"I'm going to give you
as much time as possible,"

but it was close.

[Grip] In Japan and South Korea,
on the plane,

I used to play an accordion from London.

for giving me that time.

Once we'd got Argentina in our group,

all the talk was around

I remember Sven came to my desk

And he shook my hand.

And he just went [softly] "Wow."

Like that. Something like that.

And it fascinated me.

This man that was so powerful...

but he wasn't...

He didn't have the mindset
of a super-rich man.

He talked to me about poetry,

he talked to me about art.

He was saying how he did yoga
and things like that.

And I just fell in love with him, I guess.

And that lit the fuse
for what was to explode.

Oh, Faria Alam!

God bless her!

One of the great things
from a newspaper point of view about Sven

was that he never learned
from his mistakes.

But the Faria Alam story

was far more than Ulrika.

I couldn't believe it again, um...

It's like a child
trying to gain attention from his mother.

[reporter] The England manager,
true to form, is still saying nothing.

[Sven] I never talked
about my private life.

Why should I do it now?

I mean, I'm not the first man,

I will not be the last man who...

Who makes things like that.

[Alam] Suddenly, I got a phone call
from David Davies.

"You've been running around with Sven?"

Like almost like a father to say,

"How dare you? How come I didn't know?"

I said, "Okay,"
I said, "No, that's not true."

I was paralysed with fear.

I didn't want my mum to have
that disappointment in her heart.

[reporter] Faria Alam's
FA appointed lawyers denied the affair

"saying, "There is no truth whatsoever

that our client and Mr. Eriksson
are having

"or have had a sexual relationship."

Oh, my God. I should have just said it.

[reporter] An embarrassing U-turn.

New emails have cast doubts
on her assertions.

I had blabbed off to this girl

and we were kind of laughing about it.

I guess it was a bit of a mockery of me.

I had the chief executive,
and now I've got the England coach.

I didn't have the self-awareness
that I should have had.

And of course, sure enough,

the News of the World had every email.

[reporter] Miss Alam wasn't exactly coy.

"Sven had a great body
and he performed a certain sex act"

"in a very satisfying way."

Cheating is the crime here,

whoever it is with,
and cheating is what is always,

always going to attract
the attention of the British media.

It turned out that Faria
was already having an affair

with FA boss Mark Palios.

It set up the most wonderful
love triangle.

Palios came in promising
to clean up the game,

and, you know,
the unfortunate thing

is that is that the senior people
within the FA

are now caught
in these embarrassing scandals.

[Alam] When Sven came onto the scene,

I had gone away with Mark.

He wasn't married at the time,
might I add.

Nobody was married.

Whoever it was
who said what to whom,

when the inquiry finally determines
who's to blame,

that person's days working here
are likely to be numbered.

This may be an opportunity
to get rid of the coach

without having to pay full compensation.

[reporter] "Did he deny having
a relationship with Faria Alam?"

When asked by David Davies...

The England coach

said he never categorically confirmed
or denied that it took place.

At stake, they say, is the credibility
of the organisation.

[Alam] The communications director
ended up saying to me,

"You have no choice.
You will give a story. Oh, you will."

The FA came back and said,

"If you drop the story about Mark Palios,"

"we will persuade Faria"

"to do a kiss-and-tell with you
about Sven."

So we will sell out our manager

to protect our chief executive.

And so we did the decent tabloid thing.

[reporter] The News of the World,
which had led the line against Sven,

published a transcript
of a taped conversation

between its reporters
and the FA's press officer.

[Sven] That was a mess.

Totally a mess.

And I was phoned up by the FA

telling me, "Please don't come."

So I said to him,
"Do you accuse me of anything?"

"Well, it's a mess for the moment."

"Yeah," I said,
"because you have made a mess of it."

[reporter] So yet another tabloid tale
about how sex still panics the English.

A story that could have
been buried in half an hour.

[Sven] I felt very sorry for her.

She lost the job.

Two members of the FA lost the job.

And after a week, the chairman phoned me
and said,

"You're welcome back, Sven."

"You have nothing to answer on."

"Well, you could have thought about that

"a long time ago," I told him.

[reporter] The PA claims
that she felt pressured into resigning,

but the FA argues that she did so
in order to make money.

As soon as she sent her resignation,

she signed two contracts
to sell her story for £300,000.

Yes, I know people will say,

"Well, nobody had a gun to your head."

No, they didn't.

But what would I do?

I can't get a job anywhere,

so I might as well do
whatever I can to make some money.

How else am I going to live?

So I spoke to Sven and I said,
"This is what they're doing."

He said, "Tell your story."

"Go and tell them everything.
Make some money. Why not?"

What is it about Sven-Göran Eriksson?

Wealthy, powerful.
No element of targeting him?

No, no, no,
I don't agree with that at all.

What about Nancy?

- Did you feel guilty?
- Yeah, of course I did.

I felt bad about it, erm...

But not bad enough to not do it?

So that's what I was portrayed as.

This vulgar, disgusting,

gold digger person
who breaks people's lives up.

You kind of come across
as an ambitious

good-time girl.

[Alam] I'd become infamous.

I was just spiralling
out of control into depression.

I was ashamed. I was embarrassed.
I was scared.

Mark went on. Sven went on.

I'm the person that's the bad person.

And I was the scapegoat for them

to be relieved of any responsibility.

You know, I'm in the wash,
you know, tumbling around.

That story

ran for something like three or four weeks

on the front page
of the News of the World,

which was the longest time that one story
had ever dominated the front page.

Nancy Dell'Olio
just put up with it again.

She simply turned a blind eye
because she got what she wanted out of it.

Typically, Sven just sailed through it.

He just said, "So what?"

And I've never worked out
whether that is simply

a stunning lack of self-awareness

or basically

that whatever he wanted to do,
he was going to do,

and anything, anybody didn't like it,

they can go hang.

They make you feel like

you've done something very, very bad
and very, very wrong.

But maybe, maybe that's the truth.

But maybe you have to be
absolutely perfect

to be the manager of England.

I mean, it's always difficult
to watch as,

for me, personally, as a captain.

The one thing

that you want around the squad
is stability and calmness.

But, you know, Sven knew that.

You know, I think he'd been
in this country long enough

and been managing England
for long enough to understand

what it was like and the pressure
that he was always going to be under.

He's playing football with his children,

eating lunch,

meet some friends

and I think he enjoys his holiday here.

who's about to be sacked

I think he understands

if I want to have a job in Emirates.

"No, I'm not here for that."

They started with

they wanted to buy a club.

Stupid things like that.

with what they talked about.

What are we doing here?

Quite quickly,
it went from what could we do together

to Sven suggesting
what football clubs we could buy.

Recruit David Beckham.

"I'll phone Beckham."

The reporter asks,
"And for Sven, what kind of deal?"

Eriksson's agent replies,

"I wouldn't wish to commit myself,
absolutely."

I try to answer in the way I normally am.

If I don't win the World Cup,
I joke with them,

they will sack me, so who knows?

It was a classic newspaper sting.

But all the same,
there was absolute outrage.

He's on a four million pound plus package.

He shouldn't have to worry

for coach and players.

a bit of honesty and a bit of integrity.

The Fake Sheikh story
was one flirtation too far.

and he said,

"After World Cup, finished, Sven."

And I said,
"Because of this article?"

"Yes," he said.

"Do you think it's true?" I told him.

"I don't know," he said.

I want to sleep," he said.

So I told him, "Then it's true
what people are saying."

"The News of the World
is the boss of England."

I was angry at that time.

He could have sacked me,
but not for that reason.

So I asked him one thing.

"Please, before the World Cup,"

"don't mention who you're going to take."

I had a small speech to the players

and, it was, everybody knew

that Steve McClaren should take over.

He talked after me.

He said,

"Thank you, Sven, for everything
and don't be sorry."

"We will invite you to the final
in two years' time."

"Thank you," I said, "and...

"I will remember that." It's...

I don't think
it was the right moment to...

talk about that.

That's the most difficult defeat
I had in my life.

Because you cannot do anything.

It's done and you cannot redo it.

And that was sad. Very, very sad.

with the treatment

to try and stop the growth
of the cancer as much as possible.

So, for him,

any kind of side effect
or challenge or anything like that,

he just tries to fight it
because he's so scared

that they will stop the treatment for him.

- [Sven] Yeah. In June.
- In June. [laughs]

[Lina] See if you can get
Johan to do it.

[Sven] He will. He will go.

But you can come
and be the, the cheerleader.

[Lina] The times that I have been
worried about Dad

have been when he's in between jobs.

He was a very restless soul
and a workaholic, I would say.

So, when he didn't have work,
that was when it would

spill over into other areas of life.

[Sven] That I would say was
the worst period in my professional life.

I shouldn't complain,

but I didn't feel well, nervous,

and probably not nice to be close to.

The beginning of Dad's career
was winning, winning, winning, up, up, up.

And then it kind of turned, I suppose.

And then he had to accept
more challenging jobs.

[Winter] He did rush forward.

Manchester City was a slightly
strange club at the time

in terms of, sort of, the ownership.

Sven was thrown out too quickly.

But then he did sort of
almost go globetrotting.

[Sven] Mexico. That was a mistake.

I should have waited a little bit,
stayed in Europe.

[Winter] He felt like a man in exile.

[reporter] Sven-Göran Eriksson,

the CV which takes him Lazio, England,

Manchester City, Mexico,
and now Notts County.

[Sven] Notts County,
which division is that?

Bottom of League Two.

No, I said,

there are limits.

Hello, everybody.

- It's great to come back to England.
- [cell phone ringing]

- [all laugh]
- Starts very well.

[crowd chanting]

What they offered was
we have the money to buy players,

build a new stadium.

[reporter] Notts County's new chairman,
Peter Trembling,

promises that his Middle Eastern backers
are ambitious and wealthy.

[Sven] I always said that I wanted
to come back to Premier League.

I chose a little bit difficult way
to do it, I think.

Sports director, coach,
manager, whatever you want.

It's your club.

It will take some years.

I'm sure, speaking to the investors,
that they will do it.

We will do it.

I thought,
"This is something totally new."

Maybe the biggest challenge,
football challenge in my life.

"This is a golden opportunity."

Nottingham's a great town,
fabulous people,

he's going to enjoy himself.

There's plenty of nice ladies here,
isn't there?

So he'll be all right. [laughs]

[reporter] Sven,
how's it feel to be at Notts County?

[chuckles] I don't know yet.

It's not that bad.

[man 1] No. I was expecting it
to be lot smaller.

- [woman] It's very yellow.

[Kasper Schmeichel] I came in
one afternoon and there was a missed call

on my phone from Sven.

He's at Notts County.

"He's not thinking
of me going there, is he?"

I thought that if anyone could
pull this off, it was Sven.

I thought, why not?

[Sven] It's important
to get a name, I thought,

and Kasper is the best goalkeeper
I ever had.

[Schmeichel] It was mad.

There were names being bandied about
in the press,

and all of a sudden,

Sol Campbell comes bowling in.

[upbeat music playing]

[reporter] He's won 73 caps for England,

the Premier League title and the FA Cup.

Having Sven here,
that's definitely a big plus.

- [fan 1] Welcome to Nottingham, Sol.
- [speaking indistinctly]

[Schmeichel] Wow, this is for real.

I'm gobsmacked,
been quite amazing, really.

Hello, how are you?

I phoned Mancini, I said "Coach manager?"

And you're just going, "What is this?"

You know, Sven, yeah,
he can pull them in.

Yeah. [chuckles]

[crowd cheering]

We're going to good places.

[Schmeichel] And Sol being a clever guy,

he was the first one that kind of twigged.

[reporter] It's been less than a month,

Sol Campbell has effectively ripped up
a 10 million pound contract.

I think after a few months,

I stopped getting paid and a few
of the others stopped getting paid.

And you're thinking, "Okay..."

This is a club
under sound financial footing.

[reporter] Nobody knew
who was picking up the tab.

People would just go up to the office

and knock on the doors
and say, "What is going on here?"

[Sven] I started to have doubts
when the milk bill has not been paid.

Something was wrong
with Notts County.

Extremely wrong.

First of all, I didn't want
to go to North Korea.

At all.

But the owners, they said I had to go
because it was to get money.

Another world.

We were not allowed to go out.

We lived in like a hotel in a big park.

But if you try to go out,
it was men with weapons. No.

[reporter] Sven was taken to banquets

with the North Korean leadership
to further impress them.

[Sven] I was in one meeting,
the two guys who bought Notts County,

they should help North Korea
to take minerals out of the country.

And the figures they talked about,
that was not millions,

it was billions of dollars.

What they wanted from me was an easy group
to play the World Cup.

I said "I can't do that."

I think the two owners

had promised a lot to North Korea
and that hadn't come.

So when we should leave,
they run to another gate.

And that was the last time I saw them.

There we stood. No money.

No money.

We tried to get other sponsors
coming in, difficult.

So we gave away everything.

We didn't ask any money.
Just thank you. Bye.

In other way, the club
would have gone bankrupt.

[reporter] Even after Sven wrote off
the millions he was promised,

County were left seven million in the red.

[Sven] Peter as a chairman,

he sold the club for one pound, I think,

to a local guy.

It looks like a stupid story,
and maybe it was stupid,

but I really believed in it.

[Lina in Swedish] You didn't think
to come out in different shoes?

Nope.

So who's going to get it
in the two holes over there?

Over there?

[in English] Shit!

[Lina] Dad is really good
in a lot of areas in life.

But a lot of the times I wish
that he had had a really good mentor.

[in Spanish]

[in English] How did you manage that?

Just like that?

[Johan] Definitely worry sometimes
that he could be a little more careful.

Okay.

One morning,

I got a call from
Sven-Göran Eriksson's lawyer

saying that Sven has a legal dispute
with this financial advisor.

I knew that it was something not right

since the first time I shake his hand.

[Sven] He came now and then,
I sign papers

without reading them.

One day, I phoned the bank
and asked them to do a transfer.

And they said,
"You don't have any cash."

I said, "What's that?"

[Dell'Olio] He lost over 10 million.

Stupid.

Not as stupid as him, but still stupid.

And then was the last time

I saw Sven, he became...
He was very fragile.

He looked completely another person.

[paparazzi] Nancy, is it over
between you and Sven?

[Dell'Olio] We ended it not in the way
that I wanted, of course.

This financial matter

was much worse than his infidelity.

The house, the money, I got nothing.

Sven took him to court in the end,

but then, absolutely typical Sven,

I don't think he got any money back,
but he accepted an apology.

I would have wanted
the shirt off the guy's back.

[Sven] My family, they were destroyed.

"And I said, "Well, come on,

"I'll have to earn more money, then.
Don't give up."

[Winter] I've only increasingly realised
the huge hinterland to Sven as a man.

And actually, looking back,
I think I learned a fair bit about life.

Love life, embrace it.

Deal with adversity and smile.

Värmland is quite a wild landscape.

You can grow up here and be free

and very self-sustained.

It is a special place.

Big lake here is called Fryken,

named after the Viking goddess Freyja.

So, it is a little bit mythological.

There are few people who have
had such a success over the world.

He has special love in among the people
in Värmland.

He is our guy.

Now we are coming home to Sven,
the place where he resides.

Värmland is a very good place
to come back to.

He has resettled,
and he has found peace, I think.

[Sven] It's good sometimes
to read about the places you know.

They saying that Selma Lagerlof
finished this book

up in one of the rooms where we are,

and the whole book
happened around this lake.

The story starts with a priest,
Gösta Berling.

He liked to sing,

he liked to dance.
He liked wine and women,

a little bit too much, so he was sacked.

He found the right woman
and he just takes her

on the horse and they go,
and that's the finish of the story.

What happened then,

I don't know. Nobody knows.

[Lina in Swedish]
Look how nice it is.

Haven't seen the sun since last week.

[Sven in English] There we are.

[Lina] It's not
the most organized woodshed.

It shouldn't be organized.

- [Lina] Your father...
- Would cry.

[Lina] Yeah.

[Lina] I think it's taken time to process.

And I think he's come
a long way now than initially.

It's only very recently
that I've been able to reconnect with Dad

and to have a very different relationship
with him than I had had as a teenager.

- Well done.
- No, well done to you!

You realise the value of life

and that what you thought was important

is really actually not that important.

It's hard to imagine
a life without him, you know.

Yeah.

- Yeah.
- Mmm.

[Sven] You know, when you get divorced,
you feel bad.

And I did.

So at that time,
I don't think I was a great dad.

But before that and after that,
I guess I was...

okay. [chuckles]

Ask them.

But it's good to see that the children

are on the right way

and found the right way
and have a good life.

And they will.
They have and they will have.

I'm proud of them.

Extremely proud.

[Johan] What would our life have looked
had we been living here?

[Lina] Many people
look up to Dad around here

and the journey that he has had
and the fact that he managed to believe

in his dream the entire way through.

Because it's such a stark contrast

to daily life in this part of the world.

[Johan] But I think
the biggest hurdle for him

was going from Degerfors to Gothenburg.

"Wow, do I belong on this level?"

And that was the most nervous
he's ever been in accepting a new job.

[man in Swedish]
They came by the thousands.

All because of Svennis.

[Johan in English] I asked him about it.
How did you feel moving to Portugal?

You didn't speak a word of Portuguese.

Not fazed.

[speaking in Portuguese]

[in Swedish] You don't realise
that there will be such a big fuss.

[Johan in English] Sven had a dream early

that he wanted to be a professional
in football.

That was very clear in his mind,
that he wanted to explore the world

and do bigger and better things.

[man in Swedish] The boy from Torsby
has become a football authority.

[Johan in English] And I mean,
he gave it, he gave it a real go.

[crowd cheering]

[Johan] But what an adventure!

[Lina] From an outsider's perspective,
it does resemble a fairy tale.

[Sven] I had a good life. Yes.

I think we all are scared of...

the day when it's finished,
when you die.

But life is about...

death as well.

You have to learn

to accept it for what it is.

Hopefully, at the end,
people will say,

"Yeah, he was a good man."

But everyone will not say that.

I hope you will remember me
as a positive

guy, trying to do
everything he could do.
