He's in a Star Wars club.
That's right.

We do a lot of charity work
in our Star Wars costumes,

because everybody likes Star Wars.

Does anybody have a question for Brent
about why he does what he does...

or what it's like to do what he does?

Yes.

How many people are in the club?

Well, this is a big club.

We have members all over the world, so,
total in the club, there's almost 4,000.

How long did it take
to get on your costume?

About four minutes.

About four minutes.

He's got it down pretty good,
but he's been doing it a long time.

Yes.

Do you sometimes hate doing it?

Not really.

What do you like most
about his costume?

I just like the fact that my dad took
this long to make a costume just for me.

And it just comes off.

than I ever knew.

My name is Mark Fordham.
I'm 42 years old.

Resident of Provo, Utah.

I've been a police officer for 20 years,
13 as a sniper on a SWAT team.

I am currently the Legion
Commanding Officer-

essentially president-for the 501st.

The 501st, in a nutshell,

is an international Star Wars
costuming club that's run by fans.

We're up to 43 countries, including
England, Spain, Belgium, Japan...

and, of course,
we're in all 50 of the states.

We've got almost 4,000 members now.

Being a worldwide organization,
the Legion is necessarily Internet-based.

Each unit is required
to have a Web site,

and we communicate through our forums.

So that's how we exchange ideas,
reports on events.

We exchange information on costumes

to improve the accuracy
of the costumes.

And we don't just put them on.
We become that character.

So there are some requirements.

The first one is that you have to
have a movie canon-

as we like to refer to it-costume.

We have membership officers in each
garrison that screen the costumes...

to make sure that the costume
meets the minimum standards.

I just wanted to check in with you

and see how the event
was shaping up for tonight.

A lot of clubs simply get together
to share their fandom,

but the Legion
is more of a service club.

Charity work is a large percentage now
of what we actually do in our costumes.

We do not charge for our appearances.

The recipients of our services make
a donation to a charity in our name.

Logan Donnelly
has earned his Citizenship pin

and his Citizenship belt loop.

The list would be so
long-the charities we support.

All sorts of disease research,
Toys for Tots, Make-A-Wish-

anywhere there's a need
and we can be of use.

I don't know if I showed you this
before we left.

Remember, we talked last about

having ILM do a rendition
of what this might look like.

So we had them sketch this for us.

Our participation
in the 2007 Rose Parade came about...

when we got a call from Lynne Hale,
who heads up our publicity department.

She said, "George wants to go
to the Rose Parade."

One of the things
I want to make sure is we do stand out.

It is the biggest
parade that we know of.

There's networks and camera crews
from all around the world.

It's broadcast on every network
in the United States.

So where do we stand with the band?

George wants the best. I think we should
definitely go with Grambling.

They've been in a lot of stuff.
There were in Drumline.

They've been in parades. They were in a
commercial Kayleen just saw.

Drumline was the movie that George
based this on?

Right, that he originally liked.

So we decided we needed
about 200 stormtroopers-

George made it clear that he wanted
them from all over the world-

to march in a parade
that was five and a half miles long.

The vast majority
will not have marched,

and they certainly won't have marched
five and a half miles in a costume.

This is a challenge.

And George's idea from the very start
was he wants to involve the 501st.

And do we have any idea
of, like, how to contact them?

I've got all their contact information.

It's just a matter
if we're ready to move forward.

They are a lot of fun.
Those guys are great.

Of course, there was no doubt

that we'd have the current head
of the 501st there.

So Mark Fordham
was a very important part

of helping us organize the entire event.

I think there's a lot of good ones on this,
but I'm worried that there's too many.

We decided to have the 501st
post a communication...

soliciting videos
that they would send to me

to choose who would go
to the Rose Parade.

This is the kind of
quality that we need.

And they're pretty decent,

- considering they're marching on grass.
- Yeah.

Hup, two, three, four!

That guy's shoulder piece
looks too big. Yeah.

Uh, I'm... 43 years old.

Are you supposed to see
black between the two pieces?

They're fairly standard size,
but people aren't.

When we were choosing
who was gonna be at the parade,

we had about 800 people to go through.

I like how, when they're marching,
you can't tell if it's a girl or a guy.

Yeah. No. It's the costume.

We knew when we were reviewing them

that we had to look for certain things.

We looked for
the quality of the costume,

ability to march...

and then the enthusiasm-
that intangible something special.

It was a difficult process

because most of the marchers
looked pretty good on these tapes.

And yet we knew we had to cut down.

Let's not move him to the finals.

So we went from about 800 to 400.

So you want to move
all of them to round two. Well, yes.

Okay.

And went down to about 250,

knowing that we only had slots
for 200.

My name is Karen Magnussen-Sarna.
I'm 32 years old.

I live in Daytona Beach, Florida,
and I'm an aircraft mechanic.

Growing up, I was the youngest
of three children. I was the only girl.

I was playing with
a lot of hand-me-down toys.

I had G.I. Joes. I didn't have Barbies.

I was very active in sports,
and I was a complete tomboy.

Okay, I'm warmed up.

Karen and I met, and after
a couple years of knowing each other,

we started dating.

And then 1997 is when
the re-release Special Edition came out,

and she came to the movies with me.

The first costumes I made
were Jedi costumes for each other.

I thought we could look cool going to
the movies together in our Jedi costumes.

It just took off from there,
and that's how I got into the costuming.

Now she's at the point
where she's such a Star Wars geek

that she's actually cool.

Thanks, dude.

And I'm the envy of many a man.
Yeah.

'Cause I don't know if I've been picked
to go to the parade yet or not.

It's a little bit uncertain,
but as long as there's a possibility,

I'm still gonna get
my armor ready to go.

Armor parties are the primary way

that 501st people
put their costumes together.

When I go to armor parties,

I'm usually there
to fix parts of my costume

I notice aren't working very well.

I really enjoy working
with the new people,

getting them to fit
their costume the right way.

Most people don't understand that

we're not just a bunch of geeks
wearing plastic armor.

That's part of it, but most of us
are doing this for a greater reason.

Fellow Florida trooper
Rick Stafford is doing it

as a tribute for his son,
who passed away.

I got involved with the group about
three years ago when my son passed away.

He died of leukemia,

and he used Star Wars
as a way of dealing with cancer.

He believed that what he was
going through was the Jedi trials.

And at the end of it,
he would be a Jedi Knight.

And we would actually practice
lightsaber battling in the hospital.

And a gentleman found out
about my son's situation...

and had requested me
to send a picture of my son to him.

So I sent it off and,
the day he passed away,

there was a package on the front porch,

and this is what was inside.

My son's own action figure.

I treasure it because
I know this is him,

and I know this would have
really blown him away.

So right now,
it's one of my prize possessions.

And the 501st actually was recruited

to be his honor guard
at his memorial service.

And because of that whole event,
I should be a member of the group too.

So the 501st has been an incredible way

of helping to deal
with the loss of my son.

Because I'm able to go out
and give back to kids in cancer wards...

and the different events that we do just
based on being a live action figure,

and I've been very blessed
with that whole organization.

That's one thing I really
admire about them.

They're able to take their hobby
and their passion for Star Wars...

and turn it into something good
for other people.

I don't think a lot of people
can say that their hobby...

actually benefits other people
in such a tremendous way.

So these are the guys from Barcelona.

I think their costumes look great.
I question the guy in the middle.

Yeah, it's a little over the top.

But what's really funny
is there are outtakes on this.

Is it movie, or is it cartoon?
It's more movie.

I mean, they're just goofing,
and it's wonderful.

Their marching is fine.
Their stopping is not too good.

but is that all the marching they do?

Believe it or not,
I used to be an introvert.

But being an instructor,
standing up in front of people,

you lose your shyness with that,

and then once you start doing this,
you're not a shy person anymore.

Keep an arm's length between the right
of you and the person in front of you.

So if it's farther than that,
it's too far.

in the Canadian infantry.

I served three tours of duty

in the former Yugoslav Republic
with the United Nations.

I've never tried to play laser tag

collection really started.

I haven't hung it up on the wall yet

and I sort of cry
over Yoda's smashed face.

I ran the London Marathon last year.

Nothing unusual about that.
About 40,000 people do that.

However, I did it
in my stormtrooper costume.

Things do start to chafe
in areas I can't really describe.

whereby we have probably

the second-largest fan base
outside the States.

We average easily 100 events a year.

Squad leaders, get into group

It gives us such a great opportunity

to bring Star Wars
to everybody that arrives.

One of the things
that makes a real difference

is the fact that our guys can talk.

They have the static burst

which really heightens
the believability of the character.

and I was Darth Vader
in the first three Star Wars movies.

The stormtroopers are very good
actually. They act as my escorts.

And when they're not with me,
they'll stand out of sight.

And they will also
become very officious.

I'm 28 years old.

I live in Chula Vista, California.

I go to school
at University of California, San Diego.

My major is called
Interdisciplinary Computing in the Arts.

Kind of a tongue twister,
but it's a great major.

I get to dabble in computer science
and visual arts.

These are my droids.

Each of these robots interacts
with one another using infrared light.

Right now, they're all just kind of
putting their feelers out...

just kind of getting a sense
of each other- and the wall.

That's asleep.

I think Star Wars has really
been helpful to my imagination.

The fact that it looks
a little like a TIE fighter-

it wasn't intentional,
but it's definitely there.

I think I started doing costuming
because there was a point...

when I was kind of not so much
playing with toys anymore,

and being the character,
I felt, was the next level.

Let's see. Out this way in the front
yard. I got some things laid out here.

Every costume begins by watching the
movies and scrutinizing the movies.

That's the best reference we have.

The term "canon"
stands for "movie accurate"...

so when you're looking
to do something canon,

it's exactly what
you would see in the films.

My armor is never done.

I've been working on my armor for at
least two and a half, three years now.

It's a constant cycle of upgrading
and reevaluating what you've done...

and just trying to work on it.

There's some details to be worked out
here to get that real smooth.

The Dremel is your best friend
when you're building armor like this.

We don't talk about
how expensive it is because-

If my wife found out,
I wouldn't be doing it anymore.

I'm from Durango, Mexico.

I am 30 years old.

The first time I saw Star Wars-
like children wanting to be Superman-

I wanted to be a stormtrooper.

I started making the armor
and later on,

with research,
I found out about the 501st.

That's when I said to myself,
"There's where I belong."

In the whole country,
there are 59 members.

But in Durango, I am the only member.

Sometimes you get
the feeling of loneliness.

'Cause you are standing alone.

But I know I am not alone.

Maybe I'm physically alone,
but I am not alone.

I am representing over 3,000
stormtroopers all over the world,

and that supports me very much.

So if you like it,
you find a way of doing it.

This invitation from Lucasfilm
was like a dream come true.

If I get chosen, I will freak out!

And if I'm not chosen,
I will feel a little down,

but it's a very great feeling you have
knowing I am not alone.

My name's Joseph White,
and I'm 39 years old.

I'm from Dighton, Massachusetts.

I'm a firefighter

and emergency medical technician
on the Dighton Fire Department.

And I'm a member
of the 501st New England Garrison.

I come from a firefighting background.

My father was the fire chief of this
town for 35 years.

He was my first boss.

It's a small town.
It's a small department.

And the guys I work with are great.
We've become a family.

Guys, wanna see a picture

Auburn.

Joe and I basically grew up together,
got on the department together.

Actually, between full-time and call,
we've been working together 24 years.

I love this picture.
I love this kid.

The look on his face is just priceless.

Joe gets really into the part
of being a stormtrooper.

It's just like his job.

When he's out on the road doing a call,
he gives 110% to it.

And you gotta respect the guy
for doing it.

For a time, I was in the United
States Air Force Reserve,

where I was a flight medic
in the first Gulf War.

Majority of our folks were booby-traps,
land mines, that sort of stuff.

And being able to help people,
that was a fantastic experience.

Being a stormtrooper, that's really
just another extension of what I do-

this needing to put on something
and go out and take action.

We really do thrive on just being
goodwill ambassadors for Star Wars.

When I met Heather,
she was playing Star Wars trivia.

So I was like, "That's a cool girl."

We've been married for one year.

When we first entered in,
as a married couple, to our reception,

we had them play
"The Imperial March." Yeah.

I was always just into the novels.

My first Star Wars book.

Actually, it was probably
my brother's book.

But I have since inherited it.

Or stolen it.
However you want to look at it.

Downstairs is where the cool stuff
in the house is.

We have a room in our house that is set
aside specifically for his Star Wars toys.

Yeah.

But he doesn't like to call them toys.
Action figures.

This is the collection room.

Here's what we've been building
since we moved in here.

Everything Star Wars
that you can collect-

there's a little bit of it
in here somewhere.

We got the statues over here.

We've got the 12-inch figures
in the middle of the room.

All the little ones are up by movie.

We start with Episode I on this wall,

and we kind of go
all the way through the prequels...

and then start on the original trilogy.

It ends up with Return of the Jedi.

We got ships, Hasbro figures,

Gentle Giant busts.

I'm what they call in collectors
an army builder.

I like to not have one trooper.
I like to have a hundred.

This is my favorite thing. Heather got
this for me for Christmas last year.

I love the way he looks like
he's just floating on air.

The news is everywhere
that George Lucas is gonna be

the grand marshal for the Rose Parade.

It's like, "Wow. He's actually
gonna be there?"

Yeah. And they want 500 stormtroopers.

I was like, "Wow!"

Part of me feels like they might
say no to me but yes to him...

because I don't have a stormtrooper
but I have a snowtrooper.

So I'm a little anxious about that.
I hope not.

I'm gonna get those insoles-
nice, soft insoles. That's all I need.

We built huge machines,

We are totally detail-freaked.

We try to get it as real as possible.

This is the speeder bike from the Endor
battle, used by the Imperial army.

We even have to build another.

Of course, one is not enough.

We even do reenacting.

We start replaying some scenes
from the film.

And it feels funny.

A favorite character for
me would be the stormtrooper.

It's an evil soldier in the film,
but he's fascinating. Hard guy.

He don't stop for nothing, and
that's a little bit my character too.

The Rose Parade
and the invitation of Lucasfilm...

is the first time we will meet people
from the 501st all over the world.

I think celebrating with them,
marching with them,

having New Year's Eve with them-

one of the most amazing things
you can imagine as a fan.

I would like to give a toast
to the Belgian Garrison...

and the possibility that we may go
to the Rose Parade this year.

who made the film we all love so much.

Back home it's about 6:00 a.m., I think.

So we've been on the go
for about 24 hours now.

We're just looking forward to marching
tomorrow with all the other garrisons.

I'm here with the Grambling
State University Marching Band.

This is our 80th year as a band.
We started in 1926.

We've played for kings,
queens, presidents.

All over. In and out of the country.
Japan. Africa.

But we have never had the opportunity
of being in the Rose Bowl.

This is an honor.
We're making history here.

We always say we're
the best band in the land,

but George Lucas had a sign up that
said "the best band in the galaxy,"

so we're excited about that.

I can't wait to
see how they pull off this deal.

I think the hardest part
is when we have the helmets on,

trying to find where we're supposed to

The first rehearsal was
a very confusing time for us all.

were getting the realization...

that they were expected
to really march and get in line.

It takes months for professional
military people to learn how to march.

We were trying to do this in days.

So I left that first day very pessimistic
about how we were gonna pull this off.

A lot of the guys had never
had to get into a formation before,

so it was a big deal for them
to just stay in straight lines.

Are you guys jealous that
I'm carrying a flag?

Absolutely. No.
No.

It's hard work, but it's fun work.

And we're used to that.

I want to hear what you have to tell me,
what your observation was today,

how it went with your platoons...

and any comments that came from
your platoon, as far as individuals.

The approach I took today with the flag
party was a very participative approach.

I wasn't very authoritarian with them.

Tomorrow's gonna be a different story.
We've practiced a few things.

We know what works.

If people are still unhappy that
it doesn't work, that's just too bad.

I mean, you could have
the worst marchers-

and I'm gonna tell you right now-

To be honest with you,

if you've got a person that is not
gonna be a really good marcher,

or can't keep in step,
bury that person in the platoon.

If you're gonna be at your best,

very challenging to do that.

In some respects
we're happy the training's over

and the marching's over. But in some
respect the week went too fast.

We just want to spend so much
more time getting to know people.

It's just great to meet
everybody from everywhere.

'cause they're the best marching band
in the United States.

I liked Star Wars,
and now I'm a part of it. It's exciting.

I really think Star Wars just has-

You know, I'll miss all these guys,
but I'm taking them home in here too.

the only Imperial costume

that my husband actually
likes to see me in.

Um, it's not an approved
501st costume,

but we affectionately calls this
the "femtrooper."

And there's probably about 30 of us, I
think, now that have this costume.

So what we've got
here is the Imperial walker.

Normally it's worked from steel, but our
version is built with wood.

And the outside is pure carton board.

You can put a hole in it.
