[Episode 07]

Master, once I found out Jin Yishan's weakness,

I took a quick move and dared not delay.

Jin Yishan promised to resign from Chinese Director tomorrow.

There's no obstacle for Master to join Municipal Council.

By the way, I disturbed Manager Cheng and Jin Yishan's chatting.

Please forgive me for that.

You become smart again.

Thanks to Master's guidelines, I've abandoned my addiction.

I won't do it again.

Timing and Subtitles brought to you by The ⚖️ Justice Seekers 🔎 Team @viki.com

Go to receive your award from Lan.

Thank you, Master.

You were a step behind Lei, right?

Yes. Sorry that I disappointed you, Master.

What do you think of what Lei did?

- I dare not agree with that. - Why?

About where Mrs. Jin is, actually, I also recognized it.

The reason why I asked to visit Mr. Jin

was because I found loyalty and pain in him.

Personally, I thought comforting a man who's so sorrowful

was much better than threatening him.

What's more, Mr. Jin's resentment towards Master was merely from a business competition.

It's not difficult to eliminate such resentment.

We could even turn him into our friend.

It's a pity that he'd rather give up the position of Chinese Director that everyone admires

than show kindness to us.

That's why Lei received his award from Madam.

As for you,

you'll receive the award from me.

Master.

Never forget what I said to you in front of your mother's tomb.

I have huge expectations of you.

I have no child.

How could I not expect a good young man?

Wait here.

Look.

Lan told me that Master sent you a Cadillac.

I didn't believe it.

Do you like it?

Of course, I like it. It's Cadillac!

Let's go. Let's take a joy ride.

You?

You know how to drive?

Well. You dare not sit in that?

Who told you so? Get in.

It's my first time to give someone a ride.

I-I-I'm a little... I'm a little nervous.

Please just listen to me.

Okay. I'll listen to you.

Start the engine.

It's not working.

Step on the clutch and the brake. Then start the engine.

Step on the clutch and the brake. Start the engine.

Let me see.

- Engage the gear. - Engage the gear.

- Release the brake. - Release the brake.

- Slowly release the clutch. - Slowly release the clutch.

Gently. Relax.

Gently.

Okay. You can engage the second gear.

Stop the car. Stop the car! Stop!

Now. Stop!

Manager Cheng is really good at driving.

You didn't trust me.

How could I not trust your ability?

Isn't it because of your ability that Mr. Huang sent you this car to encourage you?

You must have done something important for him.

Right. It's to encourage me.

But it's not an award.

I failed to finish the task Master handed me. He places high hopes on me.

That's why he gave me a car to encourage me to make it next time.

I don't believe that.

You failed to finish the task and he encouraged you with a car.

In that way, each disciple of Master would have a car.

I found that you're good at acting.

We almost hit the pillar, but you pretended to be very calm.

Talking about acting, I think you're better at it.

How do you say it? Pretend to be confused while actually knowing everything.

I just want you to rest assured.

If it's not safe, I wouldn't invite you to stay in this car with me.

By the way, did you also take a joy ride like this before?

My dad was always busy with his business.

Talking about having a joy ride, it never happened.

The contact card of a car dealership.

[Lung Ying Bank]

Manager.

Can you lend me your Cadillac to drive for one day?

- Lend it to you for one day? - I just want to try it.

I can let you drive for a weekend.

Really? Thank you, Manager.

Well. Did Jin Yishan change any of his routines recently?

I heard that he'll go to General Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and resign from the chairman position.

He even wants to resign from the position of chairman?

I think he might feel scared due to Lei's torture.

Drive safely.

Okay. Thank you, Manager.

What's this?

It's a Guanyin, that blesses you to have kids.

I got it especially for you. Aren't you in a hurry to have kids?

It works quite well.

I got this Hotan jade especially to pray for Commander Liao.

It's good jade.

- Thank you for that. - It's my pleasure.

You didn't come here for merely giving presents to my father-in-law, right?

Master, since your nomination of Chinese Director is settled,

the plan for Route Pichon can already start. (Now Fenyang Road in Shanghai. Route Pichon from 1902-1943 was a road in the French Concession.)

Continue.

Opening a new club.

Route Pichon is where the Public Board of Directors of the French Concession is.

You are so bold.

Master, it is because Route Pichon is where the Public Board of Directors of the French Concession is.

No one dares open a casino there.

As long as we open one, people would know Master

is not only the Chinese Director of the French Concession,

but also the real master of this area.

- Go to do it. - Yes.

Thank you.

Though you're young, Manager Cheng, you're so capable.

We became Master's disciples before you, but we'll need your help later.

- That's too exaggerated. - Right.

It's a brand new Cadillac.

Master really likes you.

Please stop joking.

We're all working for Master.

We're all the same. I still need your help later.

Sure. We will. We also need your instruction.

You're really...

Manager Cheng,

Master told you to go to the study.

Thank you for telling me that, Mr. Lei.

I'll go there now.

Mr. Lei.

What's new recently?

If it's about what happened in the business area.

Last week, Jin Yishan resigned from the position of Chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce.

It brought a huge discussion on that.

It's said that he was quite determined.

Even President Yu failed to keep him there.

He's capricious.

In the General Chamber of Commerce, the election of chairman is coming soon.

He gave up now.

The place of chairman... will be vacant.

Does Master intend to join the election?

The election this time will be extremely fierce.

Everyone wants the place of chairman.

If I'm not 100% sure,

I don't even plan to join.

Master, humans can do anything.

Please let me deal with it for you.

At this time, the election won't humiliate you in any way.

The new Chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai

will definitely be you.

Okay.

Thanks, Master.

Well...

There's one more thing, I hope I can get your approval.

Go ahead.

Mr. Jin Yishan resigned from the position of Chinese Director of the Public Board of Directors

and Chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce.

It's astonishing about his determination of self-control.

I hope I can donate to Tongzhou Charity that he owns

to show my respect.

Just do it.

Yes.

- Secretary Feng. - Manager Cheng.

It's my honor that you came here today.

You're really a successful young man.

I have to learn from you.

Secretary Feng, please stop joking with me. Please.

Talking about learning from someone,

I have to learn from you, Secretary Feng.

Come. Have a seat.

Next month, the election of Chairman of the General Chamber of Commerce will begin.

I wonder which candidate you support.

I'm just a secretary.

Does it matter who I support?

Imperial Maritime Customs Service is the authority.

And you're in a key position there.

No trade could run away from your eyes.

Your support could decide

the tendency of the election of chairman.

Manager Cheng, let me ask instead.

Who do you support in this election?

I thought among these candidates,

I don't want to support any.

- You don't want to support anyone? - Exactly.

So Manager Cheng meets me today

to let me support Mr. Huang, right?

Right. I want to get Mr. Huang chosen.

Manager Cheng,

I was never interested in Mr. Huang.

If I should tell you which one I support,

I support you.

But since you're loyal to Mr. Huang,

I can support him this time.

Shenqin Cotton Mill is raising capital.

So you hope Lung Ying Bank can join, right?

[Shenqin Cotton Mill]

Hello, you must be from some private bank.

Hello. Yes, we are.

Our Director Zhao said that

we refuse to meet any bank which wants to invest.

- You refuse to meet us? - Young man,

according to what I know, people from Huifeng Bank and Shanghai Bank

are Director Zhao's guests.

You're right. Because these big banks arrived too soon,

our Director Zhao has no time to meet you.

Wait. Wait.

What do you mean?

So you think our Lung Ying Bank is too small.

Your capital can't compare with Shanghai Bank.

And your fame can't compare with Huifeng Bank.

Please just go back. You guys were too late.

- I— - We won't disturb you now.

- Please continue your work. - Please.

Well. Why is he so arrogant? He refused the money we sent to him.

They have the ability to be arrogant.

Though this factory looks ordinary,

it can survive among a large amount of Japanese cotton.

We can tell how good its operating states are.

No wonder it's a treasure of every bank.

I can't understand now.

It's a treasure and it doesn't lack money.

Why did Secretary Feng let you invest?

Because we used to make loans to those infamous entities or factories.

This time, Shenqin Cotton Mill is quite famous.

Secretary Feng wanted to see if we, Lung Ying Bank,

can still win.

Win? We can't even see Director Zhao.

Well. You don't want my cotton?

The resilience of cotton isn't enough.

What do you mean that my cotton's resilience isn't good?

You can't talk nonsense.

I suggest you go home and plant cotton well.

If you plant good cotton, as long as it's good,

my Shenqin Cotton Mill will buy all of them.

Are you Director Zhao of Shenqin Cotton Mill?

Look. Look at my cotton.

Don't leave. Look. Come.

Look. It's very good.

Okay. Let me check your cotton.

It's also not good enough.

You even refuse such good cotton.

The cotton was put in land plaster and oil.

Bro, are you afraid that Director Zhao can't tell it?

What do you mean?

Grind plaster into powder and add some oil.

It'll make cotton white and add to the weight.

You know nothing. I won't talk with you.

You're Director Zhao of Shenqin Cotton Mill, right?

I've heard a lot about you.

I'm the manager of Jing'an Branch of Lung Ying Bank, Cheng Yizhi.

Do you also know about cotton, Manager Cheng?

I can't say that I know about it.

I used to work on Sima Road.

I heard a lot of things from others.

Manager Cheng, are you here for capital raising?

Exactly.

Why do you meet me here?

My good friend Director Gao Dayong studies tung trees to extract tung oil.

I was thinking that Director Zhao might start from cotton

to get combed yarn.

Cotton from Shaanxi has the best quality within our country.

Shaanxi's farmers of cotton usually gather here.

So I was thinking you might come here to look for materials.

So you financed Chen Chen Tung Oil Factory.

- Exactly. - Nice to meet you.

Director Zhao, several days ago, I went to Shenqin Cotton Mill to visit you.

But I couldn't meet you.

I'm so sorry.

I even refused you before.

From now on, you can visit my factory anytime.

Thank you. I'll go to other cotton markets to have a look.

- Okay. - I have to go.

- See you. - See you.

[Table of Comparisons]

- Manager Cheng. - Secretary Zhang.

Manager Cheng,

though Director Zhao allows you to enter,

you don't need to come here so frequently.

Secretary Zhang, you know that we can't compare with Huifeng Bank in fame,

or compare with Shanghai Bank in capital.

If I don't come here so often,

will Director Zhao let me invest?

Please lead a way for me.

Manager Cheng,

let me tell you the truth. Please don't be angry.

Even if you come here every day, you also have little chance.

A man comes here even more often than you.

Who's that?

I can't tell you.

Okay. Now let's talk about how drawing frame works.

Qi, can you explain the equipment on the left once more? [Textile Workshop]

- This one? - Right.

- And what else? - And the third one on the right. I didn't hear it clearly.

- This one? - Right.

Okay. How about this?

I'll explain more slowly and in more detail

to make sure everyone can understand it. Okay?

- Okay. - Good. Let's look at the picture.

When equipping the cotton machine,

we have to pay attention to the place of the entrance curtain

and the place of the exit curtain of the carding machine.

They should match. Connect them carefully.

Understand? [Textile Workshop]

I see.

Class is over today.

Thank you all.

[Yarn Spinning Room: Linen Cotton in Motion]

- Mr. Qi. - I'm sorry.

Mr. Qi, can I talk with you?

Don't be so serious, Sir. Just call me Qi.

Workers all call me like that.

That's because they don't know

you're here for financing.

So you're also here for financing.

In which private bank do you work?

I don't work in a private bank.

So you work in a bank.

Which bank?

I can't say that.

Right, I should introduce myself first.

- I'm Cheng Yizhi— - Sir, please also don't tell me that.

I have an agreement with Director Zhao.

He agreed with me to explore the workshop.

But I'm not allowed to tell others about my work background.

If you tell me who you are while I can't do the same to you,

that would be unfair to you.

You're right.

I noticed you're very good at manipulating machines.

You must have studied a lot.

Because I know a foreign language

and read many books.

After all, I need to raise workers' techniques

to make standard yarn from combed yarn.

You said that Shenqin wants to

make combed standard yarn?

I'm sorry, Sir. I need to have a meeting with workers.

Excuse me.

Lizi, could you do me a favor?

- What's that? - Sit.

I need you to translate these two books for me.

Why translating these?

Because Shenqin Cotton Mill is raising capital recently.

I represent Jing'an Branch to join the bidding.

But I don't quite know about textile techniques.

I thought when you make loans,

you only need to see a movie or dance.

It's not that simple.

Where should I start?

If you can, I think you can start from this picture.

It's a drawing frame on the picture.

It's responsible for

tension, winding, and stretching cotton.

Tension. Winding.

This is...

If you want me to translate it very precisely for you,

I need a dictionary that specializes in textiles.

But you don't have the dictionary now.

I can't translate it very precisely for you.

I think I also don't understand this.

How about this, Lizi? I'll do it myself.

Go back to your work.

Okay.

Manager.

It's Shenqin Cotton Mill's catalog of the last five years.

This is Shenqin Cotton Mill's atlas of advertising.

It's Shenqin Cotton Mill's—

What's Qi's background?

Have you found it out?

I've asked every bank.

They all said there's no manager called Qi.

Is it possible that he works for foreigners?

Such as Huaqi, Huifeng, or Macquarie?

Impossible.

Foreign banks won't put the Chinese in an important position.

We have no other ways then.

What's special about Qi?

Let me tell you in this way.

Shenqin wants to do combed standard yarn.

The ambitious Director Zhao only told Qi alone.

This is already very strange.

What's more, he's not allowed to show his identity.

That's even stranger.

I think Qi will probably get the capital raising this time.

No.

Director Zhao might be waiting for someone even better than Qi.

Pockmarked Zhao is really smart.

If we want to beat Qi, we should develop what we're good at.

Since Qi is good at techniques, we should choose another way.

Thank you.

Xiao Lingdang?

Why are you here?

I already finished Yizhi's clothes.

I thought you'd give it to him directly.

I already thought it through.

Since Yizhi married you,

I shouldn't have other thoughts about you.

I always trust his taste.

His taste won't be wrong.

Sister-in-Law.

Would you like to come and sit for a while?

No, thanks. I have to go.

[Textile World]

Madam, Master is home. [Chen Puze]

Okay. I know.

I see, Mrs. Song.

No problem.

Okay. Bye.

Yizhi, you're back.

Come. Try this on.

Xiao Lingdang just made it for you.

No need to try what Xiao Lingdang made. It must fit me.

Sh-She said that combed cotton is used up. She used medium cotton instead.

She is worried it might not fit you.

Try it on now. I've promised her.

I have something to do. Wait a moment. I have a call.

I'll wait until you finish it.

Okay.

Hello, Roundface, help me to make an appointment with

the manager of Kangtai Insurance Company.

Right. I want to meet him.

Right. As soon as possible. Before tomorrow evening.

Wait a moment.

You've finished calling, right?

Try it on immediately.

I've promised Xiao Lingdang.

Come on. Go and try it on in the bedroom.

- Do I have to try it now? - Quickly.

Continue your work later.

- Okay. - Go. Quickly.

Wait a second.

Come on.

It's too troublesome, I simply wear it over my clothes. Look, how is it?

Good-looking.

What's wrong, Lizi?

I suddenly realized that you're handsome.

[Shenqin Cotton Mill]

Manager Chen, your Shanghai Bank has a really good reputation.

This time, you'll definitely win in financing to Shenqin.

Manager Cheng.

Manager Chen.

Long time no see.

This time, if Shanghai Bank

gets the chance for capital raising,

you could also take a part.

We could cooperate.

Manager Chen, thank you so much.

Bank and private banks should work together.

We two can be an example.

Since you would like to do so,

how could Lung Ying Bank not accept?

Please have a seat.

Hello, everyone.

- Good afternoon. - Good afternoon.

- Please sit. - Have a seat.

Sit, please.

I'll be straightforward.

I'm an ordinary person.

I'm not good at anything else.

I also know about textile and weave.

This time, thanks for your great help

toward Shenqin Cotton Mill's capital raising.

I really appreciate that.

Thanks for your support to Shenqin Cotton Mill.

I'm very honored

to find the suitable proposal

in the 16 financing proposals.

Lan.

- Did you find it? - Yes.

I thought it was Huang Ruhong.

Dad, since you're not used to the pillow here,

I let Lizi get one with buckwheat inside.

Let me change it for you.

Where's Huang Ruhong?

He's busy.

I've been in the hospital for five days.

Doesn't he even have some time to visit me?

Sister Lan. Sister Lan, I'll peel an apple.

Without the chance I gave him

or my money,

could he reach such a place today?

So ungrateful.

Dad, lie down and try this pillow.

In the cotton industry, the competition is very fierce.

I think that's a fact we all know.

Shenqin needs to survive and develop.

What should we depend on?

It's machines and technology.

Therefore, there's a young man

staying in the factory every day to communicate with our workers.

He explained very carefully and in detail

about how machines work.

He also shared news of our industry with workers.

He even promised in the proposal that

he'd provide the most updated machine

for my Shenqin Cotton Mill

and provide the highest technology.

His knowledge and passion towards the cotton industry

touched me a lot.

Everyone.

He's Secretary Shimazaki Tadashi

from the Shanghai Branch of Zhaozheng Bank.

Thank you, Director Zhao.

I won't fail your trust in me.

Have a seat.

I think I don't need to say too much.

The strike here is getting more and more serious.

So how can we combine labor and capital to produce?

I also put much strength into that.

So besides Secretary Shimazaki Tadashi,

another young man...

cares about not only our sales

but also our workers.

He planned to build dormitories,

kindergartens, basketball courts for workers.

And he'll purchase insurance for workers.

Everyone,

he has such a kind of forward-thinking and open mind.

How could I not cooperate with him?

Manager Cheng Yizhi

from Jing'an Branch of Lung Ying Bank.

I invite you to work with Secretary Shimazaki Tadashi

on the investment for Shenqin Cotton Mill.

Nice to meet you.

Thank you, Director Zhao.

My father was a soldier.

He's used to being tough.

Now his body isn't good.

And he's becoming more and more bad-tempered.

If he said anything horrible,

please don't put that in mind.

It's okay for me.

But, Sister Lan,

Commander Liao talked about Master like that in front of you.

You mustn't feel good.

About the rumors of Master and I,

you must have heard some.

To be honest,

yes.

The fact isn't like that.

They all said that Master married me

to get my father's money and my father's power.

They said that he deliberately planned to marry me.

Actually, it's not him that deliberately planned to marry me,

but me who desperately wanted to marry him.

My father didn't agree.

Then I behaved unreasonably with him.

I did everything to badly behave.

At last, I won.

That's because Commander Liao loved you.

He had no way to deal with you.

Right.

My father loved me very much.

But there's one more important reason.

I wasn't a complete woman.

Thanks again for your carefulness.

Thank you.

Many thanks to everyone.

- Congratulations. - Congratulations!

Manager Cheng, congratulations.

But it's a shame

that you need to cooperate with a Japanese.

Manager Wan, you're just jealous of us.

- Manager Cheng. - Manager Chen.

- Congratulations. - Thanks a lot.

You should treat me to good wine tomorrow evening.

- Sure. - Let's go.

Manager Chen, let's talk while walking.

Sister Lan, what do you mean?

I grew up in the battalion.

I liked riding horses and shooting.

When I rode the horse,

I fell from the horse once.

I was badly hurt.

I did survive,

but I...

I couldn't have kids.

Not long after getting married,

I told him about that.

But he didn't blame me at all.

He kept treating me very well like before.

I always think that

I owe him about that.

Sister Lan, why did you

choose Master years before?

Because he was a good man.

When I just knew him,

he was just a normal worker at the Customs Department.

Each month, he could only earn five silver coins.

And he would give some to his family.

That was not enough at all.

The old man who guarded the gate got hit.

No one would like to be responsible,

but he carried him on his back and sent him to the hospital.

He even gave him four silver coins.

In that month, each time I met him,

he was either eating steamed corn bread or plain noodles.

At the end of the month, he even passed out due to hunger.

In my mind,

he's a real man.

Don't you think there's anything different today?

[Tianyin Piano Studio]

[Road Tianwentai No.19]

[Chen Puze, Tianyin Piano Studio; Road Tianwentai No.19]

[Tianyin Piano Studio]

Did she also wrongly blame Cheng Yizhi?

All of her doubts

were towards a piano.

Lizi felt something again. She was controlled.

But what controlled her exactly?

Was it destiny or fortune?

Whatever it is,

it made her extremely sorrowful.

I ordered it one month ago. They told me I should wait for half a month.

But after half a month, it still hadn't arrived.

I almost told you beforehand.

I almost couldn't wait.

Yizhi, thank you.

Try playing it.

Right, Mrs. Cheng. Please play a song.

Mrs. Cheng, I also want to listen to it.

I...

I...

I can't play.

I can only play with a piano score.

Without a piano score, I can't play anything.

- We can buy them now. - Now?

It's so late. Don't bother.

- Let's go there someday later. - It doesn't matter.

Let's drive the car and go there now.

Yizhi, don't drive so fast.

I'm afraid the bookstore will close if I drive slowly.

[Wenguang Bookstore]

Someone here?

Never mind. Let's go home.

[Loving Music Bookstore]

Let's go home. Stop finding them.

Next one.
