Director, it works. We got it!

- Great! - We did it!

- We made it. - We did it!

We've been working so hard.

We earned it.

We finally made it.

Look, it's so fast.

Manager Cheng. Manager Cheng.

It is you who saved us all.

All the workers and I won't forget

what you did for us.

Mr. Gao,

Jing'an Branch now can expect your compensation.

Uncle Cheng.

Thank you so much.

Don't give up your education.

Say goodbye to Manager Cheng.

See you, Uncle Cheng.

Who is it?

- Madam, it's me. Cheng. - Cheng.

- Cheng. - Madam, I'm so sorry. I'm late.

I hope I'm on time.

Don't worry. My daughter has bought me some.

I bought two bottles for you.

Put them on the desk.

Don't waste your money.

By the way.

Here. My daughter prepared snacks for you.

You didn't come last month.

So I kept them till you came.

Just take it.

You don't have to prepare them for me.

This must cost a lot. I don't deserve it. Just keep it.

What are you talking about?

You helped us a lot.

You bought food, daily necessities, and medicines. Take it.

Who are you?

You can't go upstairs. Are you listening?

I'm here to collect debts!

Don't try to stop me!

- Who... - Did you borrow money for loan sharks?

No, I didn't.

Wait a second.

- Why are you here? - Why are you here?

I'm not for you.

I want to see the lady of the Wu family.

Mom.

Mom. Mom, why are you just standing there?

Just sit down.

Don't worry. Sit.

Son, who are they?

They are...

Loan Shark, Qiu Dafang.

Mom, don't be afraid.

I-I didn't borrow any money from him.

Mr. Qiu, why can't we talk outside?

My mother is sick.

She can't stand any of this.

Mom, you're aching all over again. Right?

Here. Drink water to calm down.

Is she actually your mother?

- If she isn't my mom, who is she? Your mother? - Are you making fun of me?

No. The point is not what I just said. It isn't about whose mother she is, either.

If she's not my mom, why am I here for? Am I right, Mom?

Just look, Mr. Qiu. Don't you think we look the same?

Mom, why doesn't he believe us?

Yizhi, is there any misunderstanding between you and him?

Calm down. Relax.

You should talk patiently.

I feel the same way that he takes us wrong.

Well, Mr. Qiu. My mom also said we should talk.

Just tell me who you're looking for.

Who did you rent this room from?

From a young woman.

But it seems that she moved to Sanyang Park.

Sanyang Park?

Let's go!

Mr. Qiu, tell me first when you come again.

And her family name is not Wu.

What my daughter did brings no good for her.

To tell the truth...

I'm too sick...

to live any longer.

She still believes that I can recover.

She is so young.

Sit, please.

She lost her father.

Now I'm about to leave her.

She is so poor.

Why can't she have a moment of happiness in her life?

Mrs. Wu, don't think too much.

It'll be fine.

I'll call in a doctor.

No.

My daughter will come home soon.

I have a lot of things to say.

Cheng, I don't think you should be here.

Well, would you please leave here for us?

Well, please take care.

I'm sorry.

I found the poison you wanted.

It can't be seen, dissolves in water, and tastes a bit bitter.

If you put it in wine or coffee, no one can taste it.

But don't you think by his suspicious nature

that by approaching him would cause him to be more suspicious of you?

We'll find a way to do it.

What about waiting for a few days?

I can't wait anymore. The loan sharks can't wait.

I have to take him down tonight.

Then leave Shanghai with my mom.

Thank you, Charlie.

Manager Cheng, I've been waiting for you.

Madam is waiting to see you.

Madam? Who?

Of course, it's the master's wife.

Commander Liao's daughter, Liao Lan.

I see.

Madam, Manager Cheng's back.

It's my honor to meet you.

Sorry for keeping you waiting.

Please forgive me.

No need to bow.

Don't call me Madam, either.

I'm Liao Lan.

Just call me Sister Lan.

Sister Lan.

I don't want to drink water.

You are Cheng Yizhi?

Yes, I am.

- Where're you from? - Suzhou.

What's your family business?

You may have never heard of us. We're nobody.

Have you gotten married?

Not yet.

That's good.

I can introduce a fine lady to you.

Let's go.

Follow me.

Yes, Sister Lan.

Mom, I'm back.

Guess what I broght home today?

Your favorite sweets from Guanshengyuan Bakery.

Today's sweets are the best ever. So delicious.

Sit down.

What happened?

Tell me. Why did you borrow from the loan sharks?

I-I didn't do that.

Who told you so?

You're lying.

Mom, did they come for you?

A-Are you alright? Did you get hurt?

H-How do you feel now?

I'm fine.

Thanks to the young man who came to send medicine,

they left and he saved us.

Why?

Say it.

Don't...

Don't try to take revenge.

Are you listening? Do you hear what I'm saying? Did you...

Mom! Mom-Mom, what's wrong?

Are you having chest pains again?

I'm calling for a doctor.

J-Just lie down. I'll find you a doctor.

- Stop. - Mom! Mom.

Mom, how are you?

- Relax. - Don't go.

Listen to me.

What I care about most is you.

I can't hang on any longer for this illness.

Stop saying that, Mom. You won't.

I-I'll find you more medicine.

Where's the heart pain remedy?

Where's your medicine?

It'll be fine if you take the medicine.

The doctor said that you'll be fine,

only i-if you take it on time.

So Mom just take the medicine.

Why?

Why?

Take it.

Mom.

Mom.

Mom.

Here, stay with me.

Mom, are you listening?

I've found the murderer.

[The Great Atlantic Club]

It's here.

Sister Lan, you brought me here for...

Come to play with me.

[The Great Atlantic Club]

Thank you.

Here are your poker chips.

Do you know how to play?

A little bit.

I say big, for a hundred.

Mr. Wei has come early today.

Here you are.

I think of you, then you come.

You left all of a sudden last time.

You only said goodbye to me.

I had a lot of things to ask,

but I couldn't make it.

What did you want to know?

I want to know,

would you mind teaching me how to play like an expert like you?

You?

I can't teach you properly in a few minutes.

The night is long. It'll be proper for us.

Mr. Wei.

Guangfeng, it's been a long time.

Finally, you came.

Yizhi, do you want to play Five Card Stud?

I want to have some fun.

Sure.

I don't think I have the Midas touch today.

Let's go together.

Of course, Sister Lan.

I don't waste my time on Wu's business.

Although he took my shares away,

I hated him for this

so I kidnapped his board members.

So he was afraid and came to beg.

He hoped that I could set them free.

You know who I am.

I have money and I have people.

I just do it for fun.

So I told him I didn't mind about what had happened,

only if I can slap his face twice.

Guess what?

He let me snap him twice,

then he looked like a drowning dog

that could never stand up like a man again.

You know, a man like me, do I need to kill a dog

which can never bite again?

Who won?

I win again.

You are my lucky lady.

Here are your rewards. Yours.

Go, go. Hurry up!

This gentleman wins.

Sister Lan, that's lucky.

You didn't have any chips.

Here, take them.

I've given them to you, how can I get them back?

But I won by your luck.

I'm afraid that it's been run out.

Please place your bets.

Well, this gentleman, please tell us your bet.

Wait a second, Sister Lan.

Gentlemen, please look at the card in your hand.

The card in your hand is a spade.

Yours is diamond.

And yours is a club.

And Sister Lan's card is also a club.

It seems that I'm right.

Don't try to get away this time.

You're new here? How dare you.

Arrest him!

Stop!

Give me back my money.

Where are you escaping?

Take him down.

- It's not me. - It's him. He came here to mess around.

Be quiet, everyone.

I'm sorry for getting everyone disturbed.

Our club will find it out.

We'll figure it out before we close tonight.

Go get her.

Manager Cheng, please.

I heard that you're running Jing'an Branch at such a young age.

So my wife wants to know more about you

so she brought you here to the Great Atlantic Club.

Master.

She wanted to know who you were.

But it seems that you did a good job today.

Don't ask for more if you win.

Analyze the situation if you lose.

You have the guts.

You exposed the dealer,

but what if you were beaten by others?

It proved that the dealer is a card shark.

You are brave and smart.

My wife is impressed.

You even helped the people in Fuxiang Hall,

from which I can see you're well mannered

and trustworthy.

You've been keeping an eye on me.

Last time, here.

Remember?

You were facing the screen.

I was just behind it.

I hesitated... whether to go out to see you or not.

You were set up by others because of the Linfu Grain Store,

and got kicked out of the branch.

I was there and saw what had happened.

You defeated those evils by yourself.

Your position at the branch was earned by yourself,

not given by me.

Master.

That's what I want to say.

The anniversary of your mother's death is coming around.

Master,

the Municipal Council aims to designate a Chinese director,

but they don't want to add one more candidate.

I've negotiated a few times.

Five of the board members haven't accepted it yet.

Leizi,

do you think I waste my time trying to be the director?

Listen to me. What is the French concession?

It's our land. It belongs to China. But it's been taken by others.

Chinese aren't in charge,

but have to listen to foreigners.

As a Chinese, our pride is lost.

As a business man,

we have no future. Do you understand?

I know what you are trying to say.

But those French Council members

won't distribute their power.

So they're against it.

The Chinese directors in office have to focus on themselves to survive.

That's why I asked you to get the approval.

You're an expert.

It's a chance to show us what you can do.

But what?

Is it a hard task for you to complete?

It's my fault.

I will get the approval.

I won't let you down.

Get out.

Please give me one more chance.

Leizi, you're being punished.

You made him angry.

Master,

you know who he is.

He'll come for help if he's in trouble,

but he's never been careless about your missions.

How about giving him another chance?

Please give me another chance for what Madam said for me.

Last chance.

Only one month.

Thanks, Master!

Still angry?

I'll get you some hot tea. Come with me.

Come on. Let's go.

If Leizi can't do it,

maybe we should hire someone else.

[In Memory of Cheng Wanju]

I know something about your family.

I'm the manager of the branch now,

I understand that you'd investigate my background.

When I was a little kid, I knew my mom was not in her right mind.

Sometimes she just kept sleeping,

or sometimes...

she kept shouting and kicking around.

Even though...

you still decided to be with her.

Your neighbors bullied and looked down upon you,

even said extremely dirty words to humiliate you.

It's in the past.

It's all in the past.

Yizhi,

you'll be respected by more people

than those who served me.

When you're back in Shanghai,

as a representative of Lung Ying Bank,

you'll attend all events of the Bank Association.

From now on,

you're not only the manager of Jing'an branch,

but also the executive of our bank.

Master.

Raise your head.

Stand straight up.

You can't be looked down upon by others.

Listen to me. Living a respected life

doesn't mean you're fulfilled materially,

doesn't mean you achieved something,

but it means you existed.

You feel you exist for greatness.

It means that everyone sees you

with great admiration and recognition.

You know what I mean?

I know.

You can rest in peace.

Manager Cheng, Linfu Grain Store is recruiting this afternoon.

It's only because now they are making a fortune.

But I'm not in the office this afternoon. You should help Mr. Lin.

Manager Cheng, are you going to meet the members of the Bank Association?

Who said so?

We all know it now. Master's designation.

You're representing our bank.

It's true?

Now you've got the golden business card of the top royal list in Shanghai.

I'm telling you. In Shanghai, bankers and coin suppliers don't recognize each other.

The Association hasn't been fully established.

The Association we know is still in its startup period.

I have to meet them for our bank today,

so I have to make coin suppliers like us and make other bankers trust us.

It's not that simple with the golden card.

Or I'd be in great trouble.

See you.

[Association of Bank and Coinage]

You must be the youngest manager of Lung Ying Bank, Manager Cheng.

Song Tianfang from Tong Tai Bank.

I've heard a lot about you, Mr. Song.

Thanks.

Manager Cheng, Mr. Huang speaks high of you.

Today, you can't disgrace us.

It's been a few months since we met last time.

Assistant Manager Wan. I heard he has now become the manager of Zhen Hai Bank.

Mr. Song, where's your bank's leader? Where's Mr. Huang?

Manager Wang, he won't attend today.

But his representative, Manager Cheng has arrived.

Here, this way. Here.

Sit down, please.

Thanks.

What can a little boy do for our business?

- My honor, Professor Lu. - That's right.

What can you say if it's not about abolishing the tael system?

That's not the emergency.

So what is it?

Is your family's crop the emergency?

What—

Everyone, please. Calm down and relax.

The meeting is not held for quarreling.

The tael system is the basis of our nation's financial industry.

So I hope we can see a bigger picture.

Big picture?

The interest of exchanges between taels and coins

are all going to you, bankers.

You've also dominated almost every enterprise.

Manager Cheng, it's your first time to join the meeting,

you should say something for us.

Manager Wang, you're right.

The bank made money from the price difference.

But the investment of enterprise is loaned from the banks.

How much can you invest in it?

In my branch, according to the proportion of loans,

over half of loans are given to it.

Manager Wang, your investments are higher than mine?

And has any one of the bank managers seated here, done it?

Manager Cheng, you've made great progress.

Forgive me for being too aggressive at that moment.

Of course, I didn't mean it that way.

Tonight, there's a party for internal bankers of the industry.

Would you mind attending with me if you're interested?

Banker Party?

Yes.

- Let's go. - Sure.

[Ascending Lounge]

Mr. Hu.

What's wrong?

You don't look well today.

Mr. Hu, "Give and spend, and God will send."

If the government bonds fell, you can try another way to make money.

Today, I'll have a drink with you.

Great loss.

Lose everything.

Mr. Hu.

I'm sorry for being late,

but I'd like to introduce a new friend.

The manager of Jing'an Branch of Lung Ying Bank, Mr. Cheng Yizhi.

It's the first time that Professor has invited such a young man like him to us.

We don't often drink with bank managers.

It's also my first time to meet seniors from the coinage industry.

Come on, sit.

This afternoon, our Association had a meeting.

What Mr. Cheng said impressed us all.

Jing'an Branch has invested over half of its loans into many enterprises.

The high percentage astonished every manager in their seats.

Professor Lu, thanks for your compliment.

But the bankers you met today can't stand for all the bankers.

This is the founder of Shanghai Bank,

General Manager Chen.

The most famous rubber production company,

Jiu Da Company, was invested and expanded by you. My great honor.

To invest in an enterprise, no one can perform better than Manager Wu of Shanghai Savings Bank.

Thanks for your advice.

I was too reckless to boast in front of our members.

I should have known there was someone else above me.

Young man.

You're a modest man.

Well, we keep talking and leave Mr. Feng alone.

You must be the famous Secretary Feng of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service.

- You know me? - Hennessy with ice please.

Sure I do.

I've heard something about you.

You're totally different... from Huang Ruhong.

Mr. Huang was a nobody

who worked as a customs broker.

He's lucky to have married the daughter of Commander Liao, so he succeeded.

Then he made money from speculating in government bonds.

He's just a speculator.

Manager Cheng is talented.

Why are you willing to work for him?

No offense.

May I ask Mr. Chen and Mr. Fu if you have invested in government bonds?

Were both of your wives born from famous families?

Secretary Feng, do you think General Manager Chen and Fu

are also speculators?

Actually, Mr. Huang is the same as other managers.

I'm not sure...

if you're looking down upon Mr. Huang or ignoring the financial industry?

Of course, between two industries, there are many misunderstandings.

That's the key reason why we can't organize the Association successfully.

Though I'm not a qualified person to represent the private bank industry,

but now I have no choice.

I hope everyone here can pay more attention to common points

and complementary strategies of our industries.

A toast to all.

I hope Manager Cheng can be a bridge

between the two industries.

A man is asking to see you.

Tell them I've not come to work in a long time.

Hey, girls!

Welcome.

- Let's drink. Come on. - I'm not coming for drinks.

I'm here to find someone.

Check the bill.

- Keep the change. - Thank you.
