So come back to the castle and--

What are you trying to pull?

You knave!

How dare you take Princess Melty hostage?

Hostage?

Knights! Justice is on our side!

The Shield Demon must be brought before the law!

So they're calling me a demon now?

Raphtalia! Filo!

Withdraw!

Do we follow them?

No.

Melty, are you all right?

Melly...

Master Naofumi.

How were things on your end?

They were showing doctored images in all the towns and villages.

Stopping by any of them will be dangerous.

I see.

What's that?

Why did you try to kill the Second Princess in front of us?

Answer me!

I have no mouth to open to a demon!

That's a Three Heroes Church rosary.

"Three Heroes Church"?

They worship the Sword, Spear, and Bow. It's Melromarc's national religion.

Oh, right. This was on that church too.

Three Heroes Church. Everyone but the Shield.

You have upset the order of our kingdom!

You will pay for this sin with your life!

What did he mean by that?

I don't know, but I'll bet it's another of the King's evil plots.

We have nowhere to go thanks to her father.

These were not Father's orders.

Then who ordered this?

Most likely, my sister.

So she wanted to kill you and be first in line to the throne.

But the assailants were King's own guard.

We can assume your father is in on this as well.

It's them we're talking about, after all.

They would just frame the Shield Demon and say it was all his fault.

Father would never do that.

How can you say that for sure?

Because...

Father...

Why are you even trying to defend your stupid father?

He wouldn't...

Melly...

He wouldn't!

Why don't you even try to understand?

Both you and Father! This is no time for quarreling!

Talk to Father one more time!

Master Naofumi...

At this rate, I...

I can't show my face to Mother!

Don't cry, Melly!

Filo's here for you!

There.

Master!

Welcome back...

Look, we're leaving this kingdom.

What are you going to do?

I will return to the castle and talk to Father--

I wouldn't do that.

If you go back now, you'll just get killed.

If you come with us, we'll protect you.

That's all we can promise.

Melly, come with us?

Okay.

We're leaving before dawn breaks.

Get ready.

Master Naofumi, where are we going?

That's obvious.

Master!

What else can we do?

We can't bring the cart up the mountain.

We'll come back for it once everything's settled.

Promise? Promise we're coming back?

Yes.

Let's rest here for the night.

Okay!

Are you okay, Second Princess?

Yes.

She's just tired.

Master Naofumi, why did you decide to head to Siltvelt?

The difference in security.

If the border is that fortified, relations must be bad with them.

It might be a good place to escape to.

Yes!

Father...

Hey, could you tell me one thing?

What happened between you and Father?

He wouldn't have...

Mother told him to treat the Shield Hero with respect.

Always...

Oh, right. I've never heard about your mother.

Mother is Queen of Melromarc.

Queen?

She's Queen, so she's more powerful than the King.

Oh, the Queen's above the King?

Melromarc is a matrilineal monarchy.

So that King married into money?

What's so funny about that?

He acts like he's all that!

So what if he married into money?

That's rich!

Let's go.

No sign of him here.

He can't have gone far.

Leave no stone unturned!

-They are not here. -Search for them!

No luck here either?

We're going back a bit.

Found him!

Down there!

They've found us!

Can you run?

Yes.

We'll take cover behind that peak!

There's nowhere left to run.

You're completely surrounded.

Cease this futile resistance and release Princess Melty.

Release her?

I'm not holding her down.

Playing dumb.

We've got evidence, you know.

Heroes, as you can see, I am fine.

The Shield Hero protected me from those assailants!

Wait, hold on.

Naofumi, you didn't kidnap Princess Melty?

There is a conspiracy behind this incident.

I went to the Shield Hero so he would protect me.

Protect you?

What benefit would the Shield Hero draw from kidnapping me?

The Queen said that now is the time to join hands,

to unite as one and repel calamity!

We have no resources to waste on pointless quarrels!

Please put away your weapons.

You heard her. This is all a conspiracy.

I'll tell you everything I know, so--

Do not listen to him.

The Shield Demon has a brainwashing shield!

He can brainwash someone simply by talking to them with that accursed shield.

Who would believe such a lie?

According to the Three Heroes Church's research,

heretical cults worshiping the Shield have appeared over the last month.

The Three Heroes Church again?

The Shield Demon, calling himself the Savior of the Heavenly Fowl,

has been traveling the country and brainwashing people!

Malty!

Oh, my poor little Melty.

She's been brainwashed by the Shield Demon!

I see!

Then Raphtalia and Filo are brainwashed too?

No!

We have not been brainwashed!

In the first place, if the shield could do that,

we wouldn't be in this situation!

But you can't prove that it can't.

You need to prove to us that you haven't.

Naofumi, let us take the Second Princess for now.

We guarantee that she will not be harmed.

Yes, that might be a way to settle this without fighting.

You heard what Sir Ren has said!

Melty's safety comes first!

Now, come home with me.

No.

If I go with her,

she'll kill me.

Now, come.

Please...

Save me!

Ren, thanks for your offer,

but we can't let that woman lay a finger on the Second Princess.

What do you mean?

What are you saying?

Melty is my beloved sister!

-I would never-- -You would kill your own sister

to take the line of succession to the throne?

You'll claim to undo the brainwashing,

but behind the scenes, you'll kill the Second Princess!

It's a stupid plot that you'd think up!

I promised that I'd protect you.

Filo!

Okay!

Run them down!

Air Strike Shield!

Not on my watch!

I've called reinforcements. There's no escape now.

It won't come off!

Filo!

Get off me!

I can't get him off!

I had the kingdom's alchemists make this so you'd stay a lovely angel forever!

By the power I bear, I command you,

heed my law, and cleave the one I seek with blades of water!

Zweit Aqua Slash!

The next one will hit.

Let go of Filo!

Myne!

Are you trying to kill Princess Melty?

She attacked me first!

Zweit Hellfire!

Zweit Fire Arrow!

What are you doing?

Stop!

If I can't undo the brainwashing, I'll have to kill her!

Master Naofumi,

take care of Melty for a moment.

Yes.

Stand back.

Come, Rage Shield!

Filo!

That shield!

Now, unleash the hammer of justice on the Shield Demon!

Loose!

No, you won't.

It's my turn now!

Destroy the Shield Demon and his ilk!

Wait! Don't!

That light!

What is going on?

Ren.

You're smart enough to figure out what's going on behind the curtains.

Wait, Naofumi!

Yes!

Wait!

She's on our side.

She's part of the Queen's personal covert intelligence,

one of the Shadows.

Shield Hero, I must say, this is the first you have seen me as such.

That phrase...

I must say this directly.

The Queen requests an audience with you.

The Queen?

There is much more to this incident than what you surmise.

She requests your assistance in unraveling it

and revealing the forgeries made by those who find your feats dangerous.

Another group of troublemakers?

So how would I benefit from meeting the Queen?

You will know when you meet Her Majesty.

The Queen is in the opposite direction of Siltvelt?

Hey, Second Princess, do you know this country?

Oh, right, Second Princess, you can cast magic?

Don't call me that.

What was that, Second Princess?

Stop calling me Second Princess!

Why are you mad now?

I have a name! It's "Melty"!

But the Shield Hero keeps calling me "Second Princess"!

Don't treat me like a stranger!

But don't you call me "Shield Hero"?

Then I'll call you Naofumi!

So call me Melty!

Come on, do it, Naofumi!

This fast?

Okay, fine, Second Princess.

-Come on-- -Melty.

Happy now?

One more time.

What?

Call me that one more time.

Melty.

You'd better protect me.

And thanks.

Something wrong?

No. Nothing.

This smell...
