Sir.

This is the finest slave in our inventory.

It is at level 75.

It's nearly 20 times my level.

How much for it?

It is very well suited to battle,

so how about 15 gold?

This is the most expensive thing here.

You know perfectly well that I won't buy it.

Yes. You will be a very good patron in the future.

We do need you to feast your eyes on how high we go.

Now, then.

You have seen our finest goods.

What kind of slave would you like, sir?

Something cheap and obedient.

Then you would want

a Demi-Human.

It will not be as suited for battle or manual labor.

If I need it to fight, I'll train it to.

A very intriguing idea, considering that you do not trust others.

A slave isn't a person.

I'm raising a thing, just like my shield.

You have got me there!

These are the lowest quality slaves we can offer you, sir.

From the left--

Raise your head.

That raccoon girl has a psychological disorder.

She is causing me a great deal of trouble.

Her previous master had a penchant for torture.

She likely won't last long.

I'll take it.

What?

I'm buying this slave.

Well, then.

Hey.

No need for concern. It will be over soon.

The slave seal on her chest will make her unable to disobey you.

SLAVE A IS NOW IN YOUR POSSESSION

SLAVE A

Party member settings?

The girl is now yours to do as you please.

The price was 30 silver?

There is an extra silver in here.

The convenience fee.

You intended to take one, didn't you?

You do know me, sir.

Now, maybe you could tell me your name.

Come on, your name.

Your name!

Raphtalia...

"Raphtalia"?

Let's go.

We look forward to your continued patronage.

I knew you would choose her.

Oh, you do give me the shivers.

Welcome!

Oh, it's you, kid?

Hey, now, what's with her?

Give me a weapon it can use.

My budget is six silver.

You took too long.

I'm sorry.

Whatever.

Raphtalia, draw the knife.

What?

Stab it and pop it.

No...

I order you.

Refusing will only cause you pain.

Do it.

Too weak!

Stab it harder!

Do it!

I got experience too?

Probably because you put her in your party when you formed the contract.

You didn't do it when you came with that other girl?

That woman...

Listen up.

From now on, I am going to order you to fight monsters.

I spent all I had on you.

You will work at least what I paid for.

Kid, keep that up, and you're going to die in a ditch.

Thank you for the kind compliment.

What are you doing? Get up. Let's go.

Yes!

Good grief.

Either this country's bad, or that kid's gone bad.

I have three silver left...

Move them! Faster!

Quit slacking, you trash!

What have you done, you stupid trash!

I'm sorry!

Are you hungry?

No.

You can't fight on an empty stomach.

Let's get lunch.

What?

NO DEMI-HUMANS ALLOWED

Well...

-What's wrong? -This place--

Come on!

Welcome...

The Shield...

So that's the criminal?

Idiot! He can hear you!

I'd like to order.

Yes, sir.

The cheapest lunch you've got for me.

Whatever that kid's eating for this.

Nine copper.

Here.

Why?

Did you want something else?

Why are you feeding me?

Because you looked like you wanted to eat.

Your order, sir.

You're not eating?

Can I?

Whatever, just eat.

Drink.

Is it good?

Yes!

Still no flavor at all.

Raphtalia!

Yes!

Now!

"Crafting abilities"?

It sounds like something useful.

Master.

Master, what do you do?

I'm a Hero.

The Shield.

A Hero?

The Four Cardinal Heroes?

Yes.

Raphtalia, do you know about the four legendary Heroes?

Yes! The Sword, the Bow, the Spear,

and the Shield!

Right.

Among them, the Shield Hero was particularly kind to us Demi-Humans.

Really?

I hope I can meet him someday!

If you're a good girl, you'll surely meet him one day.

The Shield Hero?

Well...

Your name...

Naofumi Iwatani.

Naofumi Iwatani...

Drink this.

It's medicine that I crafted.

It should work on light colds.

Drink it.

It's bitter.

Good medicine tastes bad. Just drink it.

Raphtalia, I'm sorry.

Raphtalia, we want you to live.

Please, forgive us for what we're about to do.

Dad!

Mom!

What's wrong?

Calm down.

Save me!

-Dad! Mom! -Don't cry.

It's okay.

It's okay now.

The quality is not bad.

Are you studying medicine, Hero?

I made it for the first time yesterday.

Really?

Which is worth more? The herbs or the potion?

Potions have been selling well with the recent Wave.

We'll buy the potion for more.

I see.

In total, four silver.

Oh, right.

Do you have any equipment you don't use anymore?

Ready?

There!

Raphtalia.

Do you want a ball like that?

Not at all.

I don't want a ball like that at all!

You do.

You can play after we're done working.

Thank you!

Coming!

The Shield Hero...

I'd like a room.

My companion may scream in the night.

You'll give me a room, won't you?

Yes, sir! We'll have one right away!

I need to find a way to survive until the Wave hits.

All right.

Maybe we can go deeper into the forest...

A rabbit?

Look out!

Raphtalia! Now! Stab it!

What's wrong? Do it now!

But if I stab it, blood...

Do it!

Blood! I'm scared!

Listen up and listen well.

If you can't fight, I can't look after you.

Soon, another Wave of Catastrophe is going to strike this world.

I need to get as strong as possible before that.

But the only thing I can do is defend.

I need someone else to fight for me.

If you can't do it, then I'll find someone else.

So...

You're going to fight the Waves?

That's my purpose.

I understand.

Master,

I will fight.

So please

don't leave me.

Okay.

This is reality.

It isn't a game.

In order to survive, we have to fight.

Get me a new weapon with this.

Maybe it's time for the girl to try a sword.

A shorter one might be good for now.

How about this one? It's an iron short sword.

Hey, mister,

are there any towns or villages we can reach with our current equipment?

Let me think.

With your equipment, this is the place.

LUTE VILLAGE

How much for it?

All together, I'd say two silver.

I see.

Is there anywhere around here to make some quick cash?

The ore from that mine would probably fetch a nice sum, but...

Is there a problem?

After the first Wave, some dangerous monsters took nest there.

No one considers going anywhere near now.

I see.

Honestly, where are those Heroes that they said they summoned?

ROPE SHIELD

A special effect and skills?

Rope Shield.

That's exactly what it is.

SKILLS: CONSUMES SP

All right.

Air Strike Shield!

Master?

It's nothing. Let's go.

They said there were dangerous monsters here.

If we run into anything, we're running away.

You better keep up.

Yes.

Well...

What?

What should I call you, Master?

Whatever you want.

Then...

So this is the place?

All right.

Aren't these...

This will probably fetch a good price.

Raphtalia, let's go over there next...

Are you okay?

A dog monster...

Everyone in my village...

Mom and Dad...

During the first Wave?

So that explains the screaming in the night.

Did that monster kill your parents?

Yes...

Listen, Raphtalia.

You are going to kill it right here, right now.

What?

If you fight and make me stronger,

I can repel the Waves of Catastrophe and prevent the tragedy from repeating.

It won't bring your parents back.

But you can save others from going through the same experiences as you.

All I can do is make it so you can fight as best you can!

Raphtalia! Now!

Stab it with your sword!

Now!

No...

If I die, you'll die too.

No!

Then do it now!

This is an order!

Raphtalia, that's enough.

If you can't fight, then run away and get out of here.

What about you, Master?

I'll buy you enough time to escape.

But...

That's the same

as back then.

Now! Go! Run!

Master!

No...

No...

Don't go...

Don't leave me!

I don't want you to die!

Air Strike Shield!

Raphtalia!

Good job.

Master Naofumi!

That hurts!

Hey...

The power of the Shield helps, but wounds still hurt, you know.

Don't die on me!

Don't leave me alone!

Master Naofumi!

She called me by name.

You'll fight, and I'll defend you.

I won't die as long as we do this.

Yes.

I'm feeding this monster to my shield, and then we're going back.

Yes, Master Naofumi.

Come on.

Just a little longer.

The ore sold for a good price, so eat as much as you'd like.

Yes!

Is it good?

Yes!

I see.

Master Naofumi.

Let's survive together!

That's the plan.

A kids' meal isn't right

without one of these.
