A couple of years ago, I had my third, and hopefully last, psychotic episode.

A state of mind where I can’t separate fantasy from reality.

Where I see intentions that don't exist...

Put things together that don’t make sense.

Conspiracy thoughts.

Are you awake?

- Now I want to dance. - You want to dance?

Dance, dance, dance...

Stress and lack of sleep put me in a frame of mind

where I found meaning in almost anything.

In every little detail...

How people looked at me, the color of their clothes,

or the way they spoke to me.

Anything could feel like a covert signal,

or coded message meant only for me.

I felt like society was divided into two fractions:

the ones who understood, and the ones who didn't.

I was sure I was being followed, and bugged.

I hid in my apartment.

I heard seagulls outside my window

and thought they were flying surveillance robots.

The flashing light from the smoke alarm signaled to me what I should do,

when to lie still or get up.

It became my reality.

An experience of the world just as real as my current one.

I have just started writing my fourth solo album.

It feels like the natural continuation of what I usually write about.

Texts about our place in the cosmos. About who we are, where we are going...

A mix of the naive and the pretentious.

During periods of heavy stress, I have noticed that my brain malfunctions.

I often get "thinkos".

Which are like thinking errors.

I am only thinking about problems, unable to solve them.

As if the "problem-solving module" in my brain is constantly on.

Don’t have time for other things, don’t have time for myself.

A vicious spiral of stress, leading to more stress,

leading to action paralysis.

WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING NOW?

When I fell into a psychotic state, it happened gradually.

After a few sleepless nights, my brain felt like it was stuck in a dream.

With its own distorted logic.

As if I had woken up to a whole new reality.

Absolutely convinced that everything I thought was true, and real.

But sometimes I think...

How can I tell if it's happening again?

How can I be sure that my experiences are real?

FORGET YOUR MIRACLES

Being in a psychotic state means that you have a personal delusion,

an experience of the world that is uniquely yours,

it's no longer called psychosis.

It can be called conviction, faith, or belief.

Currently, about 6.5 billion people on Earth

believe in some form of God, creator or supernatural power.

85-90% of the world's population are convinced of that.

That is an overwhelming majority...

that shares a similar worldview.

So if I don't belong to that majority,

does that mean I'm wrong?

And that I still live with a skewed perception of reality?

I have decided to never become mentally ill again.

I track my vitals

and follow scientifically based routines to prevent a recurrence.

To keep my brain and body in shape.

I start every day with a large glass of water.

I fast 12 to 14 hours almost every day.

I drink smoothies with lots of fiber.

I only drink coffee in the morning and never after lunch.

I run in a forest environment several times a week.

I breathe through my nose as much as possible.

I do high-intensity interval training,

morning stretches, and walk a lot.

I take cold showers and hot baths,

which produce cold-shock and heat-shock proteins.

I follow guided meditations

and take naps if I don't get a full night's sleep.

I do breathing exercises and special thought exercises,

inspired by stoicism.

I also track my activity, breathing, body temperature and sleep,

with a ring, with a lot of sensors.

A lack of sleep makes all mental illness worse,

so I track my deep sleep and REM sleep,

and how food, nutrients, light conditions and activity

improves or impairs my sleep quality.

I also measure my heart rate variability;

variations in time between each individual heartbeat.

All to keep track of my stress level.

And to feel good. And live a long life.

That is the setting I use on my health app,

the "Long Life" setting.

I am 43 years old now,

and have lived about half of my natural lifespan.

According to a measurement called Micromorts,

which measures the risk of dying during various activities,

I have 6 Micromorts risk of dying,

just by getting out of bed.

1 Micromort means that you have a one-in-a-million chance of dying

while performing a certain activity.

Riding a bike has 1 Micromort.

Skydiving has 10 Micromorts,

per jump.

Just a little more dangerous than running a marathon, which has 7.

Swimming in the sea has 12.

And just getting out of bed as a 90-year old, has 463.

Almost as dangerous as your first day of life, as a newborn baby,

which has 460 Micromorts.

It’s kind of funny how we relate to risk.

Most of us don't really worry about the dangers we face every day...

Instead we worry about really unlikely dangers.

Like shark attacks,

which only has 0.5 Micromorts.

Or ghosts, which have zero.

No.

DOGMATIC TRIBES STUCK IN A LOCAL MINIMUM

In almost all religions there is belief in an afterlife.

It is the largest common denominator.

This idea obviously provides comfort and hope...

no matter how unrealistic it is.

But, I might be engaging in a similar type of wishful thinking

with my faith in longevity research,

which has been able to double the lifespan of mice, and other animals,

if I believe that it would have the same result in humans.

WORSE - BETTER

I think a lot about ideas that stick...

and our tendency not to change our minds even when presented with new facts.

And about getting stuck in patterns.

I try to avoid that, even though Hannele says I do it all the time

"nuclear winter"...

"synthetic pandemic"...

Meaning, someone creating a virus

that causes a pandemic.

"Natural pandemic"...

Then... "artificial intelligence..."

Depending on who you ask, some rank it high, others, low.

Mhm.

What's left?

Then there are volcanoes...

"Super volcanoes"...

Comets...

Asteroids...

But the probability of those is not that high.

The main threats are all man-made...

so we are behind the most urgent threats.

But you never know when...

all hell breaks loose.

Do you have something else to talk about?

Something else, fun like that?

And that many of us are good at justifying these ideas

It's interesting to think about the fact that your thoughts can't be 100% clear.

That every experience, decision and opinion

is colored by our own preconceived worldview.

An example of this is the so-called Dunning-Kruger effect,

which means that the less you know about something,

the more confident you are about it.

Confident that you got it right.

And the other way around:

the more you know about something, the less confident you feel.

The more you know...

the more you realize you don't know.

I think about our evolutionary preconditions...

And all the ideas and beliefs that we carry with us...

How they affect our worldview,

and our behaviour.

How we constantly influence and mimic each other.

I'm reminded of what happened in Rwanda 1994.

Where hateful rhetoric justified widespread genocide.

The ruling regime spread ideas, mainly through radio broadcasts,

about Rwanda's minority population,

comparing them to cockroaches that must be exterminated,

and playing ethno-pop full of bloodthirsty and hateful messages.

Almost one million people were murdered over the span of three months.

Neighbors killed neighbors.

Friends killed friends.

Relatives killed relatives.

The main driving force behind the conflict was the idea

that one of the ethnic groups was superior to the other.

An idea that was first introduced by Belgian colonizers

almost 80 years earlier.

In 1976, the term "meme" was coined to describe what is culturally copied.

Information that is passed on from one brain to another;

words, gestures, customs and ideas.

Similar to genes, memes consist of information

only it’s not encoded in DNA.

They exist in patterns of electrochemical signals in our brains.

Memes also undergo evolution via natural selection.

They are sifted, changed, developed and passed on.

The well-adapted spread the most, and become dominant.

Memes can live on for generations.

Some can start wars or justify injustice,

others can reduce suffering and vulnerability.

An infinite number of ideas, in a never-ending battle.

What role does music play in such a context?

I mean, if I have an idea that I formulate and express,

could it affect the massive flow of information in any way?

On a microscopic scale.

The interaction between many parts on a microscopic level

can form complex structures on the macroscopic level.

As in living biological systems...

like ants in a colony.

I guess the question is:

how can I be sure that what I put out will have a positive effect?

And what do I really mean by a "positive effect"?

THE GOOD SHOW

Something that makes a difference...

in the world.

Music is good for conveying emotions, and creating atmosphere...

But is it any good for expressing thoughts

about research theories in the social and natural sciences?

Anyway, it's not easy to predict what’s going to have a positive impact,

or a negative impact.

I'm reminded of an aid project called PlayPump.

A merry-go-round that was placed in poor African villages

and where the energy from children playing with it

would drive a water pump and provide freshwater to the village.

This project was supported by lots of influential people

who all wanted to do a good deed.

The problem was that the merry-go-round was heavy to push around

and that the children got dizzy, and quickly tired.

In several cases adults began paying children to push the merry-go-round

or the women had to take over the so called “play”

to get enough water out of the ground.

Or when my dentist told me that I needed to brush my teeth harder.

When I saw him again, one year later,

I had brushed so hard that parts of my gums were gone, forever.

Maybe this is why I think so much about what I convey,

because, even if it’s on a small scale,

the thoughts, feelings and ideas I put out

have an affect on other people.

That might also explain why it takes me such a long time to make an album

that the ambition to get it right, becomes a form of obsession.
