[Eddie] Maybe I'll just be a
dumb, falling down little kid.

[Tom] The nice thing, Eddie, at your age

is that you can be anything you want.

[Eddie] A soccer player.

[Tom] Well, that-that looks

more like rugby, old chap.

[Eddie] But you know what
I wanna be best of all?

[Tom] A stick thrower?

[Eddie] I wanna be a terrific sport

just like you.

But I couldn't go back to sleep.

- Mr. Eddie's Father?

I think it was a ghost.

Well, I think it was a bad
dream, Mrs. Livingston

which probably stimulated
your imagination

and you thought you saw something.

No, dad, I think it was a ghost.

Remember? There was a
full moon last night.

Yes, Eddie, when I was a child

I heard ghosts become restless

in the time of the full moon.

- Wow!
- Oh, no-now-now-now...

Now wait a minute, Eddie,
there's something

you have to understand.

You see, Mrs. Livingston
was raised in a country

where many people believe in ghosts.

That's the way she was brought up

but I was brought up differently

and I don't believe in ghosts.

You see, Eddie, it is
something I cannot help.

Oh, that's okay, Mrs. Livingston.

I think it's terrific
you believe in ghosts.

I did not want to frighten you.

Oh, no, Mrs. Livingston,
I'm not frightened.

I'll help you scare away all the ghosts.

What can we do?

Oh, there are many ways.

Well, well, first you have to
get rid of the bad dream.

he will chase away evil spirits

who will bring evil dreams.

and body of a horse

tail of the cow and feet of the tiger.

Oh, that is a beautiful picture of Baku.

Baku isn't real, is he, Mrs. Livingston?

No, he's from mythology.

And there are so many
fascinating stories

from mythology.

[yawning]

[chuckles] Oh, boy, you must've
had a big night last night.

Yeah, I was working late.

Have you ever, ever shared a bed

with a six armed, eight
legged gyroscope.

mean, I mean Eddie.

And to top it all off, there was
Mrs. Livingston and her ghost.

- Ghost?
- Mm-hmm.

Ghosts, where?

Oh, no, no, no, don't-don't
you two start on it.

What happened?
Mrs. Livingston saw a ghost?

Yes, Mrs. Livingston saw a ghost.

No, not really, Tina.

You mean, she just heard it?

No, I mean she imagined it.

Well, how do you know?

- Yeah?

Hey, you know the kind
of ghosts I like best?

Are the kind that you can't
hear or see or anything.

You just know they're there.

I'm partial to poltergeists myself.

- Yeah?
- They don't pussyfoot around.

They clang-clang a lot.

Alright, you two.

Mrs. Livingston had a bad dream.

She imagined it and that's all.

Where was it?

It was in Eddie's room,
according to Mrs. Livingston.

Oh, Eddie's room, hmm.

What did Eddie have to say about that?

He thinks it's neato.

Mm-hmm. And what are you
gonna do about it?

Well, unfortunately, nothing tonight

because I'm working again.

Working?

Yes, I'm working at trying
to play Kate Arlene

for missing my date with her last night.

So, I'm taking her to a
charity affair at a hotel.

- Hmm.
- You know what?

I always had the feeling
those big charity affairs

at hotels are more for the
benefit of the hotel

than the charity.

- Boo!

[sighs] Hello, Mrs. Livingston.

Is Eddie in bed?

In case my drawin' of Baku doesn't work

I'm gonna scare all the ghosts
away for Mrs. Livingston.

Eddie, it's time for you to go to bed.

Mrs. Livingston, I can assure you

that there are no ghosts
in Eddie's room.

feel you have to sit up

until I return.

Well, a ball is another way

of saying fancy dance.

In other words

I am going to a formal affair.

- Wow, dad. You look great.

You look just as great as Gus.

The waiter in the Walnut Room.

- Oh, that Gus.
- Mm-hmm.

Now, listen, Mrs. Livingston's
gonna be asleep

before you are, come on.

If she doesn't see anymore ghosts.

Yes, well, don't you worry about
Mrs. Livingston's ghost.

Sometimes, even adults are
afraid of the things

that they shouldn't be,

[alarm buzzes]

[grunts] Oh, wake up, the
Olympic games are over.

[yawning]

is a lump on my mattress.

Dad, do I get to sleep in
your bed again tonight?

No, tonight I get to sleep in it.

it when you pick me up

after school and bring
me to your office.

Well, I think Mrs. Livingston
deserved the afternoon off.

I mean, considering the last two
nights she spent at our place.

And she stayed on the couch too.

Eddie, how would you like
to stay out here with Tina

while I go and finish up
all the work on my desk?

Have you seen anymore ghosts
at your house, Eddie?

Uh-uh, but Mrs. Livingston

Well, I-I try my best to see that it is.

Eddie, this is one of
a series of articles

that we did on ghosts,
but in another issue

we did do an article explaining a way

some of the strange things

that people think they see and hear.

Yeah, dad, but you told me that
you only print what's true.

Well, we try to, sport.

But in order to print what is true

you have to tell both
sides of everything.

Then I guess other people
but Mrs. Livingston

believe in ghosts and things like that.

Yes, but an awful lot of other people

look for a sensible explanation.

Now, I will admit

there are a lot of very strange things

that happened in this world.

But usually somebody comes along

with a very easy and
simple explanation...

...sooner or later.

Then what about these two pictures?

Mm-hm.

Well, I'll tell you what. Let's
just go ask your Uncle Norman.

Huh? He researched the article.

He can explain the article.

It's an exciting subject, Eddie.
Psychic phenomena.

What does that mean, Uncle Norman?

It means that things that
go floating across a room

sounds of mysterious
steps on the stairway--

Norman!

Eerie floating lights in the night.

What I want you to do
is explain to Eddie

how some of these things happen.

Okay, eerie floating lights
have come a long way

in the last 100 years, remember
that article I did on

psychic phenomena?
The pictures I had?

No one has ever been able to
explain them satisfactorily.

Maybe not, but somebody will eventually.

You're gonna stand there and
argue with great minds like

Socrates, William James, Mark Twain?

They all believed in psychic phenomena.

They did?

Sure they did.
Ghosts are terrific.

- They are?
- Sure, don't hurt nobody.

- Anybody.
- They don't hurt them either.

- Are you sure?
- Positive, Eddie.

All they'd like to do is go
around, have a little fun.

They like to move furniture,
open up closed drawers.

Harmless.

What do they wanna do that for?

Well, ghosts are forgetful

see, they forget things.

I once heard of a ghost
who had to come back

'cause he forgot his pants.

Alright, your Uncle Norman
is kidding, Eddie.

No, it's an actual case.

Yeah, but some ghosts are scary.

No, Eddie, some people
think ghosts are scary.

And some people say an
old Scottish chant

before they go to bed at night.

What is it?

"From ghoulies to ghosties

"to long-leggedy beasties.

"Things that go bump in the night

Good Lord deliver me."

Does it work?

Every time.

[inhales deeply] Eddie...

[clears throat] Eddie, sport, look, um...

You know how you like to
watch movies on television

scary movies with monsters in
'em and things like that?

Yeah, like "King Kong."

Yeah, hey, remember when that
big monkey had little Fay Wray

in his hands and she screams?

That was beautiful.

Uh, anyway, uh, Eddie, do you get
scared of things like that?

Sure, but that's what's fun.

I know, well, that's how
Tina and Uncle Norman

and I think probably Mrs. Livingston

feel about their ghosts.

And my ghost especially is terrific.

Eddie, people don't wanna
stop believing in ghosts.

Just like you don't wanna stop
watching your monster movies

on television because sometimes...

...being scared... can be fun.

Do you understand?

But sometimes it isn't fun.

You know, dad, maybe there
are ghosts in my bedroom.

Well, Eddie, I'm sure that there's
a reasonable explanation

for whatever it is
Mrs. Livingston thinks she saw.

Hey, I got it.

Let's hold a ghost hunt
and we'll find out.

Hey, yeah.

It's a terrific idea.

Look, you wanna prove to Mrs. Livingston

and the kid, that there are no
ghost in the bedroom, right?

Yeah, dad, a ghost hunt
will be terrific.

If everybody's there.

Alright.

We'll have a ghost hunt.

Terrific, tonight we go
out, we get the big stake

and we stick it in the heart. Ah!

[babbling]

Do you think we should
burn some incense?

No, no, no, 'cause if
it's scentedectoplasm

you burn incense, you can't smell it.

Oh, marvelous, you made hors d'oeuvres.

No, it is offering for spirits

so he will not depart in anger.

Or in hunger.

Well, that's a terrific
idea, Mrs. Livingston.

Once he eats one of your rice cakes

he'll never leave the room.

I am not sure this is wise idea

Mr. Eddie's Father.

Now, don't worry, Mrs. Livingston.

We're all here together.

Yeah, us and the ghosts.

Hm.

Eddie, are you scared?

- No.
- Good.

Then why don't you just sit up here?

And we will chase away
all those ghosts, okay?

Okay.

Hey, everybody, ready?

- Mm-hm.
- Okay.

Try the rice cookies, it's a great bite.

they get the message.

Everybody, very quiet.

Ready?

[bell rings]

Say, uh, sport

why don't you just lie
down and get comfortable?

I think this is gonna take a long time.

- Okay.
- Okay.

Ow! There's something in my bed!

Oh, Eddie, it is only dry peas.

There is a belief, dry peas in bed

will drive away evil spirits.

Oh, yeah.

Well, look, sport, why don't we
put 'em under your pillow, huh?

I think it'll be a little bit
easier to sleep that way.

- Alright?
- Okay.

Okay. Good, there we go.

Okay, sport.

Huh, okay.

Everybody, ready?
Mrs. Livingston, please.

The light.

Everybody ready?

Ready for what?

Anything. Ha! Ha, ha, ha, ha.

Norman, don't do that to me.

Shh.

Shh.

He-he-he.

[bell rings]

[sniffs]

I smell something.

[sniffs]

Yeah.

It's my aftershave lotion.

Don't worry, a ghost couldn't afford it.

It is full moon again.

It is not good time to summon spirits.

Why not?

[whispers] Spirits may answer.

Yeah, yeah.

♪♪

Does anybody hear anything?

- No. Do you?
- No.

- Do you?
- No, do you?

No, I don't.

Shh.

He-he.

[bell rings]

[gasps] Ah-ha!

[Tom] Alright, now,
everybody, just relax

just relax.

I'm sure that the candle went out

because of the draft from the open door.

Oh, yes, the draft from the open door.

I say a ghost has come
into the room with us.

Norman, light your candle
and I'll shut the door.

But how will the ghost get out again?

I got it, I remembered the
last line to the poem.

Restless spirits, through the night...

...closed in spectral sheets of white...

...we summon you unto this light.

We won't hurt you.

[speaking in foreign language]

Oh, look, one of my rice cake

has disappeared.

Oh.

My mother never taught me to wait

until company comes, Mrs. Livingston.

I ate it myself, it's terrific.

Shh.

Ghosts are never gonna
come unless we're quiet.

Kid's right. Shh.

[chuckles]

[bell rings]

It's a ghost, look!

You see, Mr. Eddie's Father?

It's a ghost, it's a ghost!

No, it is not a ghost, Eddie.

Well, then what is it?

It is Kappa, the river goblin.

No, it's a Chet and
David fishbowl goblin.

- Uh?
- What?

You see, uh, Mrs. Livingston,
what you were so frightened

I believe... was the moon

playing tricks.

- The moon?
- Really?

Now, Eddie, Mrs. Livingston...

...watch.

See?

No ghosts

[Tom] No ghosts.

- No ghosts?
- Nope.

- No, no ghosts?
- That's right.

No ghosts.

Oh.

[sighs] No ghost.

Well, you can't win 'em all.

H-how 'bout a drink? Oh, yeah,
thought I'd never ask.

What would you like, sweetheart?

I think I need a carrot juice.

- I'll have some milk.
- Milk, terrific.

I'll take whatever you
think you can fix.

But not ghosts.

Well, the moral is...

...never be afraid of your own shadow.

- I'm not afraid of shadows.
- No.

His problem is, he's not quite sure

whether or not he's still
afraid of ghosts.

Oh, you remember what the
White Queen said in "Alice."

No, I don't.

"Believe six impossible
things before breakfast."

Oh, that's fine, as long as you're not

still hanging around after bedtime.

- Hey, Eddie.
- Hmm?

Did you know that you're really spooky?

- I am?
- Sure, come here.

Let me show you.

Well, this is how come.

I'm gonna make a tube.

Now, very slowly...

...hold it in this hand, put
it up to your eye, see?

Now, put your other hand
right over here like I say.

That's good. Open both
eyes and what do you see?

Hey, I've got a hole in my hand.

[Norman] Right!
Now, you think you're spooky?

Wait till you see this.
Here, look.

Take one finger like this, right.

Take the other finger like this, right.

Now, show it to your dad, right.

[Eddie] I got an eerie floating finger.

Well, your Uncle Norman,
has just shown you

that you can't always
believe what you see.

So you may as well believe
what you don't see.

That's right, the important thing is

if you look at something long enough

you won't be afraid of it for very long.

Therefore in life, there's
nothing to fear.

Just to be enjoyed.

Ahh. Eddie...

...are you afraid of ghosts anymore?

Well, I guess I'll think that over.

I still do have a lots of
time to decide, don't I?

Mr. Eddie's Father, this is
a very interesting issue

of your magazine.
May I borrow it?

- You like boats, Eddie?
- Aye-aye, skipper.

[Tom] Har-har, matey, well, maybe
someday if we save our money

we can afford a small boat of our own.

[Eddie chuckles] Neato.

Then we could go sailing like Columbus.

And discover another country.

[Tom] I think they're
all discovered by now.

[Eddie] You know, if
Columbus had had a bicycle

none of us would be here today.

[Tom] That's pretty
heavy thinkin', sport.

[Eddie] Well, I'm gettin' to be

a pretty heavy feller.

[Tom chuckles]

Yeah, you're getting a
little sleepy too.
