2025 has arrived Happy New Year from me

petro trone and a very warm welcome to

the musique fair here in Vienna once

again we share that sense of the old

year put to bed with all its moments of

joy and sadness celebration and regret

ahead lies the Clean Slate of a new year

the empty pages of a diary waiting to be

filled and what better first entry than

this Rich concert of Music familiar and

less well known from the players of the

Vienna philarmonic this year directed by

the Italian conductor Ricardo MTI the

Vienna philonic New Year concert is

supported by Rolex I can tell you a

little light snow here in Vienna this

morning the temperature hovering between

minus1 and -2° but it is warm inside the

golden Hall of the musique fair iron

where over the next few hours we'll hear

works by Constanta gerer and Yosef

helmberger Edward and Yosef Strauss and

Johan Strauss senior but as ever the

spotlight falls on Johan Strauss Jr the

wals king particularly so as this year

marks his benter he was born on October

25th 1825 in St ulich now part of

Vienna's 7th District 25 minute walk

from Musik Farine or four stops on the

number two tram the Anan and trat poers

the Overture to the operator Gypsy Baron

and the Lagoon acceleration and blue

here this morning Ricardo Muti takes to

the stage we're going to start with a

work by Johan Strauss senior composer

sharing his tasset support for events in

that revolutionary year of

1848 the freedom March

of stra his books achieved huge success

in the Germans speaking world in the

1860s Ricardo Muti born in nap he was a

Pianist before he decided early on that

he wanted to conduct it was in 18 1966

that he won a prestigious conducting

competition in Milan an event which

launched his career four years later in

1971 her Thon caran asked him to conduct

the Vienna philarmonic at the salsburg

festival thus starting a partnership

with this orchestra that has lasted well

over half a century as well as Vienna

MTI spent a decade in charge of the

London philonic 12 years at the

Philadelphia Orchestra 19 Seasons at

lascala Milan and he is now music

director emeritus of the Chicago

Symphony Orchestra which he directed for

years well next the first work of the

Year by Johan St Junior and

appropriately it's all about New

Beginnings in this case for Vienna in

the 1860s when the ring stresser was

being laid out the related Works were

be making their annual New Year's Day

appearance in the second half of this

year's concert including a moment when

they let the train take the strain as we

find them inside the Vienna technical

Museum also coming up later a work by

constan Gyer that Johan stra senior

premiered in 1848 the first time ever

music by a female composer has featured

in the New Year's Day

concert well it's Edward St next the

youngest of the stas brothers his fast

poker like and Breezy first heard in

this very Hall in 1882 Edward was music

director of the Court balls at this

point soon after the concert he would

depart for Berlin and engagements there

traveling was one of his passions he'd

wanted to become a diplomat but came

under sibling pressure to join the

Strauss family

business Vienna fonic under the Baton of

one of their self- declared favorite

conductors this year Ricardo Muti Edward

of this 2025 New Year's Day concerts

Ricardo Muti former conductor of the

filmonia orchestra in London the

philadelph heier and Chicago orchestras

in the states and lascala Milan he first

led this event in 1993 returning in 1997

2000 2004 and 2018 he conducted the

lockdown concert on January 1st 2021

when he the orchestra and the broadcast

team were the only people in the hall

today marking his seventh appearance

starting the new year viene style well

course our annual trip towards the Black

Sea as we crisscross the European

Frontiers along the blue

2025 well the Vienna Phil harmonicas had

a long relationship with the music of

the stra family though this was the

orchestra of Brahms and Mara it would

often play Strauss 2 the roots of this

event can be traced to the early 1930s

when conductor Clemen Krauss presented

an annual all Strauss Galler at the

Saltsburg Festival the first New Year

concert here took place on December 31st

1939 while we're live on BBC 2 and radio

3 this morning but let me assure

listeners that as ever the rich pallet

of colors inside the hall more than

stimulates the senses helping banish any

morning after the night before Funk the

Gilded careds and painted ceiling

complimented by the pastel shades of

thousands of flowers resting on a

Vienna's Municipal parks and

this year now we are marking the benter

of Johan St Jr born in

1825 and next to work that reflects his

love life his first wife the singer

Henrietta TRS known as Jetty died in

1878 50 days after her passing he

married again this time the actress

followed one of the issues was her

relationship with the leading theater

director not long before the divorce

came through Strauss wrote two pkers the

last ballet sequence just one month

before the birth of Johan St II in 1825

the world's first public Railway line

began operation between Stockton and

Darlington so that gives us another B

Europe's growing Railway Network that

enabled the St family to achieve such

International success their or traveling

to Berlin Paris and Budapest and further

a field to St Petersburg where Johan

stas gave concerts for a decade in the

1850s and 1860s St would surely have

approved of the international nature of

this concert broadcast in 49 European

countries televised across the United

States and in other nations in the

Americas including Brazil Honduras

Jamaica and Paraguay showning Korea

Taiwan Sri Lanka Japan and reaching vast

audience is now in China truly a global

broadcast event uniting music lovers the

world over 93 countries and territories

in total this

year well every New Year's Day we

celebrate Strauss and his siblings and

his father but what about Johan ysf and

Edward's mother she was called Maria

Anna she and other Annas celebrated now

in a work Premier on St an's Day July

26th in
