Happy New Year from me, Petroc Trelawny, and a very warm

welcome to the Golden Hall of the Musikverien here in Vienna.

Once again, we share that sense of the old year put-to-bed,

with all its moments of joy and sadness, celebration and regret.

Ahead lies the clean slate of a New Year,

the empty pages of a diary waiting to be filled.

And what better first entry than this rich concert of music

familiar and less well known from the players of

the Vienna Philharmonic - this year directed by the Italian

conductor Riccardo Muti?

Over the next few hours, works by Constanze Geiger

and Joseph Hellmesberger, Edward and Jozef Strauss,

and Johann Strauss Senior.

But, as ever, the spotlight falls on Johann Strauss Junior -

the waltz King - particularly so this year, as it

marks his bicentenary.

He was born on October 25th 1825 in St Ulrich,

now part of Vienna's seventh District, a 25 minute walk

from the Musikverein, or a short stroll and then four

stops on the Number Two tram.

The Annen and Tritsch Tratsch polkas, the overture

to the operetta Gypsy Baron, and the Lagoon, Acceleration

and Blue Danube Waltzes are amongst the works by Johann Strauss

that we will hear this morning.

We are going to start with his father - showing his tacit

support for events in that revolutionary year of 1848 -

The writer August Silberstein was interned because of his

revolutionary activities.

He had written a novella called Village Swallows from Austria,

which inspired this waltz by Josef Strauss.

Riccardo Muti was born in Naples and was a pianist before deciding

early on that he wanted to conduct.

It was in 1967 that he won the Guido Cantelli Conducting

Competition in Milan -

an event that launched his career.

Four years later, in 1971, Herbert von Karajan asked him to conduct

the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival -

thus starting a partnership with this orchestra that has already

lasted well over half a century.

Next, the first work of the year by Johann Strauss Junior.

Appropriately, it is all about new beginnings -

in this case for Vienna in the 1860s, when the Ringstrasse

was being laid out.

The related works were causing chaos,

the sort of inconvenience urban dwellers in the UK -

especially those with cars - might complain about today.

As the Fremden Blatt newspaper noted in 1864,

"One need only take a walk through the inner city.

In Karntnerstrasse, buildings are being demolished,

at Graben they are paving the street, at Lugeck

they are laying down pipes, the High Market is closed off,

and so on it goes."

This was the largest urban redevelopment programme

in Vienna's history - and, of course, Strauss was on hand

to write a piece of music to reflect the upheaval.

The Demolition Men's Polka saluted workers who had come here

from across the Empire to work on the project.

We won't catch the 1224 express but there is a night train

leaving at 9:50 and arriving in perfect time for

breakfast over-looking the Lagoon.

all central to the plot of a show that opened in Berlin in 1883 ?

Eduard Strauss next, youngest of the Strauss brothers.

His fast polka Light and Breezy was first heard

in this very hall in 1882.

Eduard was Music Director of the Court Balls at this point.

Soon after the concert, he would depart for Berlin

and engagements there.

Travelling was one of his passions.

He had wanted to become a diplomat, but came under sibling pressure

to join the Strauss family business.

He conducted the lockdown concert on January 1st, 2021, when he,

the orchestra, and the broadcast team were the only

people in the hall.

Today marks his seventh appearance starting the new year, Vienna style.

Still to come, the overture to the Gypsy Baron, the waltz

Wine, Women and Song, and of course, our annual trip

towards the Black Sea as we criss-cross the

European frontiers along the Blue Danube.

The Vienna Phil has a long relationship with the music

of Johann Strauss - though this was the orchestra

of Brahms and Mahler, it would often play his works too -

many of its members also plated in Strauss's own ensembles.

The roots of this concert can be traced to the early 1930s,

when conductor Clemens Krauss started an annual all-Strauss

concert at the Salzburg Festival.

The first New Year Concert here took place on December 31st 1939.

Shortly, we will find dancers of the Vienna State Ballet

in the rooms of the Sudbahnhotel, a once grand railway hotel built

at the command of the directors of the Semmering Railway

on their route south through the mountains.

They will dance to the music of Johann Strauss Junior -

to remind you 2025 marks the composer's bicentenary year.

First the overture to his opera The Gypsy Baron -

which opened on the eve of his 60th birthday -

Oct 24th 1885 at the Theatre an der Wien, that storied stage

so associated with Mozart and Beethoven.

The opening bars immediately reflect the exotic intrigue of Hungary.

The dancers filmed in the Sudbahnhotel,

which opened in 1882.

Quickly, the Viennese upper class circles flocked to the place

until the beginning of World War Two.

After the war, the hotel reopened, but the world had changed.

The last guest checked out in 1976.

Staged by two British artists, Cathy Marston's choreography,

director of Ballett Zurich, Switzerland, costumes

by designer Patrick Kinmonth.

She was 12 when she wrote it in 1848, and a popular figure

at Court, where her father was future Emperor Franz Joseph s

music teacher.

Before that, a march by Josef Hellmesberger,

former director of the Vienna Phil.

His operetta The Violet Maiden features a trio of brothers -

one a juggler, one an athlete, one a singer.

They are the subjects of the Merry Brothers March.

The original version as played by the Strauss Orchestra is lost -

just the piano score survives - which was orchestrated for today's

concert by Wolfgang Dorner.

By the way, I count 11 female players in the Vienna Philharmonic

line-up this year.

We are marking the bicentenary of Johann Strauss Junior, born in 1825.

Next, a work that reflects his love life.

His first wife, the singer Henrietta Treffz, known

as Jetty, died in 1878.

50 days after her passing he married again, the actress

Angelica Dittrich.

Alas, this was an unhappy relationship that ended in divorce.

It was not helped by the fact that she had a long affair

with a theatre director.

Not long before the divorce came through, Strauss wrote two polkas,

the titles of which explained his point of view.

One was called The Wiser One Yields, the other -

which we are going to hear next - was Either, Or!

Strauss explained he was not up for any kind of menage a trois!

Railway locos and ballet dancers - an unexpectedly

successful combination!

Jozef Strauss's Transaction Waltz next - a transaction

might be about money, but it might also be a subtle

piece of negotiation, or an act of reconciliation.

Included today as 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Austria

joining the European Union.

A nod to the railways in that last ballet sequence.

Just one month before the birth of Johann Strauss

II in 1825, the world's first public railway line began operation

between Stockton and Darlington.

So that gives us another bicentenary to mark this year.

It was Europe's growing railway network that enabled the

Strauss family to achieve such international success

? their orchestras travelling to Berlin,

Paris and Budapest, and further afield to St Petersburg,

where Strauss gave concerts for a decade in the 1850s and 1860s.

The last work in the published programme for this 2025

New Year Concert is one of Strauss's greatest waltzes -

Wine, Women and Song.

Wagner proclaimed this his favourite work by Strauss, Brahms quoted

from the waltz in one of his string quartets, and Schoenberg arranged

it for chamber forces.

It was an immediate hit, given its American premiere

in New York a matter of months after it had first been

heard in Vienna.
