[SIRENS WAILING]

REPORTER: Protestors engaged again with police

during a series of violent clashes

throughout the city tonight.[CROWD CLAMORING]

REPORTER: Denying all charges of bribery and extortion,

the mayor's office is now

urging residents to stay off the streets

as curfews are implemented in the downtown area.

In the wake of countless reports of arson and vandalism,

the Governor is threatening to declare

a state of emergency,

giving her the ability to bring in the National Guard.

[SIREN WAILS]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER POLICE RADIO]

HALE: This is Hale. I've arrived at the scene.

[ALARMS BLARING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING]

[FIRE CRACKLING]

HALE: I don't see the police officer,

I'm going in.

RICK: Well, maybe he went in a little bit early

to get a head start on things?

It's gonna be a busy night for everyone.

HALE: All I'm saying is,

it'd be nice to have someone to...

keep the homeless at bay.

How's things looking out there?

Oh, no. The crazies are out tonight.

Be careful out there, Officer Hale.

[THUDDING]

HALE: Looks like our guys barely had time

to put this out before running off to the next.

The whole city is a mess.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

I'll be able to tell you how it happened

right after this.

[DEVICE BEEPING]

How many people died?

There were at least three fatalities

the other night.

HALE: Probably due to some kind of trip stove,

or something like that.

Yeah, well,

that building should've been demolished years ago.

Picking up traces of some type of accelerant.

[DEVICE BEEPS]

This was intentional.

[GASPS] What the hell, man?

Did you just get here?

What? What?[CLANKING]

THOMAS: Thought I cleared everybody out.

Probably just a squatter. I'll run 'em off.

Yeah. You go do that.

I'll be right here.

[DEVICE BEEPING]

Hello? Anybody in here?

[PENSIVE MUSIC CONTINUES][CAT YOWLS]

Shit.

HALE: Everything all right up there?

It's just a cat.

[SCOFFS LIGHTLY]

THOMAS: Hey, wise ass.

This building is condemned.

Time to go.

Fuck.

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

"Acheronta"?

[THUMPING]

You okay up there?

Hey. Everything okay up there?

[GROANS]

Fuck!

HALE: What the--

[PENSIVE MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

[PANTING]

[GASPS]

What--

No!

[EXCLAIMS, GRUNTS] No, no! I gotta get out of here!

[GROANS]

[GROANS, SCREAMS]

[GLASS SHATTERS]

[SCREAMS]

DAVID: Superos.

WOMAN: [SCREAMING] Help! Somebody!

Help us! Help![SCREAMS]

[HALE CRYING OUT]

[PENSIVE MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING]

[SMART WATCH RINGS][UPBEAT MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[PANTS] Hey, Dad.

What was your time?

Uh, 17:20.

PATRICK: That's 20 seconds off your best time.

[CHUCKLES] You better pick it up.

It's just been a tough week, that's all, Dad.

PATRICK: No, I understand that.

Listen. I'm gonna make you some of the pancakes

that your mom used to make from scratch,

and you're gonna love it. You know how important it is to

get a good power breakfast in, you know what I'm saying?

[CHUCKLES] I'd love to, but I--

Look, I don't think I'm gonna have much time.

I can't be late today.

PATRICK: You're gonna crush it.

LOU: Hey, Daddy, um...

you've done so much for me since Mom passed,

letting me stay and all.

I'm getting my first check in a couple weeks, and, um...

I wanna... [SIGHS]

I wanna chip in a little.

Your first check?

What are you talking about? I want all your checks.

What are you talking about?

You're my daughter, and I love you.

And... and, by the way...

Protestors were out in force on--

PATRICK: One second, honey, I'm listening to the news.

...for the third consecutive year.

Injuries and hospitalizations have been reported

during what initially started as non-violent protests

regarding city corruption

following several high-profile cases.

PATRICK: Should be careful out there.

It looks like it's gonna be pretty rough tonight.

No, no, no. [CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING]

I'm not gonna be anywhere near what's happening.

I'm still in training, so they're not sending me out,

so, uh, you don't have to worry. [PANTS]

Besides, I'm your daughter,

the daily run will be our shadowboxing.[CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKING]

All that training growing up?

It didn't go to waste.

Don't forget about the Jiu Jitsu. Okay?

You were kicking little boys' asses

when you were eight years old.

You're amazing. You're unstoppable!

You're gonna be working with the Fire Department, okay?

It can get rough out there.

Just be careful, is all I'm saying.

[LOU PANTS] Hey, by the way, it's Wednesday, isn't it?

Don't you have poker with your buddies at the club?

You know, I actually got all the guys from the precinct,

all the retired guys, coming over.

I just-- I miss their smell so much.

Look, I gotta go.

Uh, I can't be late. I'll see you soon, okay?

All right. I'll see you soon, honey.

[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING][DOG BARKING IN DISTANCE]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

[LOU PANTS]

LANA: Authorities are still searching

for the perpetrators

who stole countless weapons from the Museum of Antiquity.

City officials are claiming outside instigators

are coming in and hijacking this peaceful movement.

I am Lana Larkin from KIL 57.

Hey, I was watching that, grasshopper.

[CHUCKLES] Hi!Hopper. [KISSES]

This smells very good.Yes.

We're gonna have a feast.

[CELLPHONE RINGS]

All right, let me get this. Patrick.

No, no, no, I--

Thank you, man. I'm retired. Appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm taking it easy now. No, no, no.

Thank you, though.[BEEPS]

Proud of me?

I don't believe it for a second. I really don't.

[CHUCKLES] Okay. So I have to take a shower.

PATRICK: All right.Hmm.

And, in honor of your retirement,

I will eat this bacon in the shower. It is so good.

So you're not gonna actually eat?

The world does not need a hangry paramedic!

[SIRENS WAILING]

LANA: This place is disgusting.

Stop![CAR TIRES SCREECHING]

Did you even get a shot of the exterior?

I want something that shouts

"Inner-city community crying for help."

CAMERAMAN: Uh, yeah. It's got "Pulitzer" written all over it.

Oh, fuck off.

[GRUMBLES]I got it.

How do I look?

Beautiful.

Christ. Try not to choke to death on a fucking donut.

[SCOFFS] Okay.

And...[CAMERA BEEPS]

...rolling.

Four, three, two, one.

Five years ago,

I reported just outside this very apartment building

as a fire ravaged this inner-city community

and caused the horrific deaths

of an entire family trapped inside.

And earlier this week,

this same building was set on fire yet again,

claiming the lives of several in the homeless community--

another tragic reminder

of the lawlessness now gripping this city.

Stay with us

as we offer updates from behind police barricades.

This is reporter Lana Larkin, signing off.

[CAMERA BEEPS]

The proper term is "unhoused" or "people without housing".

You're not supposed to say "homeless" anymore.

It's the same thing, you fat fuck.

Well, it's just what I've heard!

Okay, you know what? Fine, "unhoused".

[SIGHS, SNIFFS]

[CHUCKLES, GASPS]

LANA: Watch out![CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER POLICE RADIO]

RUSSO: You think he drove himself here?

All right, he kills a cop,

drops the car here,

and puts the body in the front seat.

Who does that?

"Superos"?

Does anyone know what the fuck this means?

[PENSIVE MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[EXHALES SHARPLY]

PATRICK: Wow, look at you! [CLAPPING]

You look great. You look beautiful.

How's training going?

Yeah, it's good. Um, you know, I passed all my certifications,

so I'm just waiting for the green light.

Your mom would be proud of you.

I want you to go-- You gotta eat.

Okay, yes.Don't forget to eat.

Please.Thank you, Dad.

Go knock 'em dead...LOU: Love you, Dad!

...and then revive 'em again!

And just keep, like, an endless loop.

I love you!LOU: Love you, too!

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING]

[ALARM RINGING]

[RICK ANNOUNCING INDISTINCTLY]

[FIREMEN CLAMORING]

[PENSIVE MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

RICK: O'Connor, a moment?

Walk with me.Chief.

There's no use crying over spilled milk, am I right?

Sir?No hard feelings?

Uh. You're talking about how you tried to fail me?

Hey.MAN: Thanks.

Did I?

Look, in case it wasn't clear,

I'm not entirely sure you belong here.

Respectfully, sir, I would disagree.

Well, you know what?

The fact of the matter is,

there's only two kinds of people in this world.

Those who know how to think

and act when the shit hits the fan,

and those who don't. I think you're the latter.

And it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Some people are just built that way.

It... it's not that I froze, Chief.

I believed that the patient could be saved.

RICK: You're overthinking.

That costs lives, regardless of the reason.

Okay? It's called triage.

You treat, and you move on.

That's the job, O'Connor, whether you like it or not.

You spent too much time with the mother.

You left those kids alone, unchecked, in the back.

I thought there was a chance.

She had injuries incompatible with life. Period!

And you sure as shit don't know what those kids had,

because you didn't check. You left that for me to do.

And that is a hell of a way

for you to tackle your practicum.

That wasn't my intent, Chief.

[SIGHS] Look.

You see a fire,

you either go towards it, or you run away.

How you make that decision, that choice,

that determines if you belong here.

You're gonna have to make that choice today.

I'm going out?

It was determined to let you out of your training.

For my part? I'm watching you.

LOU: That's great, Chief! You won't regret it,

I promise you.RICK: All right.

Don't make me come out there and check up on you.

This is it.

Your bus is already late for the dance.

You're gonna be riding with Jason.

Fifteen years on the job, you can do a lot worse.

Keep your eyes open, take notes

and see how it's done by one of the best.

Right.

Hey, Chief, you still looking for Hale?

We're working on it.

Haven't seen him since last night's fire.

So I get you for your first shift

without any training wheels? You ready for this?

Yep, ready.

We can't have any fuck-ups, not today.

The shit is hitting the fan.

Got it.Oh...

Is it true the Chief failed you at the Academy?

LOU: It's complicated.

JASON: [SCOFFS, LAUGHS] Wonderful.

Okay.

Now, I'm guessing no one's told you about

rule number one?What rule?

You need to put on your game face before going out.

It's like your war face,

but with your mouth closed and breathing through your nose

so that nothing from a patient ends up in your mouth. Now,

the last crew's a little behind, and we still need to refuel,

so we're gonna have to hustle out of here.

[OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

[RADIO STATIC CRACKLES]

The emergency channel's all filled up.

I can't hear anything. Switching over to 2-B.

We are ready to...

[RADIO BEEPS]...go.

RICK: Medic Three.

Go ahead.

RICK: There's a possible stabbing of one male party.

Proceed to 412 Broadway.

You'll find police already at the scene.

Copy, we're en route.

This should take us pretty close to Old Town.

How close, exactly?Just across the river.

Hmm. I grew up not far from there.

We're seeing the Devil's Punch Bowl, I guess?

[SIREN WAILING]

REPORTER: Bridges in and out of the city

are now officially closed to the public

as violence reaches historic levels.

In yet another surprising turn of events,

the Chief of Police announced his department

is undertaking a series of internal investigations,

aimed at rooting out

what many see as blatant acts of corruption

among rank-and-file members of the City's law enforcement.

[SIREN WAILING]

[CROWD CLAMORING]

[SIREN WAILING]

Saint Joseph's code yellow, only taking life-threatenings.

What about Julian?

LOU: Nope, they're at capacity.

This is where everything went down last night.

Okay. Here we go.

Let's move.Okay.

[OMINOUS MUSIC CONTINUES]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

Ma'am, my name is Lou with Seattle Fire.

Do you wanna tell me what's happening here?

Do you have any pain? Anything bothering you?

Let me get that fixed up for you.

JASON: Need to put this on you nice and gently.

We'll get you all fixed up here, okay?

LOU: You're okay. Good, good. Yeah? All right.

Just real gentle, okay?JASON: You're doing great.

Sir? Please,

have a seat right here on the sidewalk. Yeah.

I'll help you down.

My name's Jason from Seattle Fire.

How you doing?

[SCREAMING]

You hear that?Take a look.

See if there's anyone else who needs some help. Go.

Okay. I have to check on other people.

JASON: All right. You're gonna be okay.

[GASPS]

[CLATTERING]

[FIRE CRACKLING]

Seattle Fire paramedic. Is anyone in need of assistance?

Seattle Fire paramedic! Is anyone in need of assistance?

[GASPS] Oh, my God!

Jason, Jason! Do you copy?

You're gonna wanna see this. Get over here!

Jason! [GASPS]

I don't know what the hell this is!

Jason. Jason! I need you here, man!

Where-- Jason--

Sir! Sir! Sir! Jason![GROANS]

LOU: Jason, I got a man down! Where are you?

Sir, sir, sir. Sir, sir! Come on!

Jason! Jason, I gotta start CPR, okay?

[WHISPERS] Okay, one, two, three...

Jason, I need you here! Do you copy? Get over here!

One, two, three. One, two, three.

One, two, three...

Jason, do you have it?

[PANTS]

[CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER][POLICE RADIO CRACKLING]

I got it, thanks.

RUSSO: Hi.Hi.

I'm Detective Stan Russo.

Lucy O'Connor. You can call me "Lou".

Okay, Lou.

Uh, so she was some kinda, like, reporter, right?

RUSSO: She was.

The guy you saved was her cameraman. Nice work.

Yeah, well, whoever did that twisted shit

is not right in the head.

Yeah. Well, I've been told

he's been put into an induced coma.

Otherwise, he might be able to tell us what happened here.

Do you think he'll recover?

LOU: I mean, he was in pretty bad shape

when they took him away.

I think it'd be a miracle if he made it the night.

Hey, listen. I know you guys are gonna be running calls all day.

Yeah. Detective, um, I gotta get back to my partner.

I'll be quick.

All right, when you arrived at the scene,

was there anyone else there?

Um...

no, no, I just-- Look, I told the officer--

Just a bunch of injured people in the area.

Hey, uh, by the way, can I ask you something?

Go ahead.

What in the hell

is that thing sticking out of her mouth?

It's supposed to be a medieval torture device.

It's from several items that were stolen from a museum.

It's, uh, called the "Pear of Anguish".

[DUMPSTER RUMBLES]

[OMINOUS MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

Again?

Can anyone tell me what this means?

That's Latin. Yeah.

It means, like...

"If I cannot".Thanks.

Sure, whatever.

All right, guys, listen up!

All right, no one moves this fast without messing up!

All right? We gotta hustle

before this turns into a shit-show. Let's go!

You're with me.[OMINOUS MUSIC CONCLUDES]

Tilt to the side for me there. Great. Thank you.

WOMAN: Hey, stop. Stop, there.[CAR HORN HONKING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

Hey, where's your partner?

I'm just gonna apply slight pressure, all right?

Good.

Hey. You look a little hurt, huh?

Listen, while this nice lady patches you up,

can you tell me what happened?

They... they just... just started hitting me.

LOU: Okay. It looks like we've got

a large laceration in the right abdominal side.

I'm gonna need to take a look at this, sir. Okay?

All right, I'm just gonna take a quick look, all right?

[CHILLING MUSIC PLAYING][LOU GASPS]

RUSSO: "Flectere"? Do you know what that means?

Sir, do you know who did this to you?

Have you seen this woman?

Have you seen her?I didn't see nothing.

Just--Get away. Get away!

LOU: Sir--Get away.

Get away from me!Okay. Okay, sir.

MAN: [GRUMBLES] Don't touch me!

[CHILLING MUSIC CONTINUES]

Wouldn't let me touch him. I don't know.

Well, these-- these guys get harassed all the time.

Yeah. If we took that guy to the hospital,

they'd just give him an aspirin and let him go.

You're not wrong about that.Chief, we're clear here.

RICK: [OVER RADIO] Roger that.

We're low on supplies.

RICK: Copy. Head on back and restock the ambulance.

Do you think that was Latin on the wall?

No, it was, yeah.

Any chance you know what "superos"means?

That's Latin, too, right?

It means, "the gods".

That's interesting.

So, all this reading, is it, like, a...

is it a hobby?

Majored in a dead language.

Ended up doing my thesis on it.

Everybody thought it'd be useless, but, hey...

Oh, Latin?

I can barely speak English.

Yeah. And Mandarin.

Grew up in Chinatown as a kid.

Worked at Mr. Wong's Palace.

RUSSO: Oh, I know that place.

Yeah. That's how I picked up the language.

Then, out of nowhere, Dad moved us to River Falls.

RUSSO: That's quite the upgrade.

LOU: I always liked it in Chinatown--

More sense of community.

[WOMAN SCREAMING]

There's still people inside!

[SCREAMS]

DAVID: Si nequeo.

LOU: We good?

[CHILLING MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

DAVID: Flectere.

RUSSO: Ah, these guys keep coming out of the woodwork.

[CHILLING MUSIC CONCLUDES]

I've never seen it so empty.

JASON: You should shower,

and grab a bite to eat and get some rest.

It's gonna be a late night.

I'll restock, refuel and be back in an hour.

LOU: Thanks, Jason.

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING]

LOU: Jason! Jason! Do you copy?

You're gonna wanna see this! Get over here!

You're gonna wanna see this! Get over here...

Jason! Jason...

Jason, do you copy? I need you here!

I don't know what the fuck I'm seeing.

What the fuck I'm seeing.

What the hell is happening here? I need you!

What the hell is happening here? I need you...

[PENSIVE MUSIC CONCLUDES][WATER SPLASHING]

[LOU BREATHES DEEPLY]

[OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

[OMINOUS MUSIC CONCLUDES][RINGING]

Lou. How'd it go?

Lou?

Lou?[HAUNTING MUSIC PLAYING]

[WATER SPLASHING]

[ELECTRICITY CRACKLING]

[DOOR CREAKS]

[DOOR CREAKS]

[WHISPERS] Come on.

You're kidding me.

[ELECTRICITY CRACKLES]

[HAUNTING MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

[ALARM BLARING]

[INDISTINCT ANNOUNCEMENT IN THE DISTANCE]

[HAUNTING MUSIC CONTINUES]

DAVID: Si nequeo. Flectere.

[GASPS][HAUNTING MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER TV]

Here we go.

[NEWS THEME PLAYS ON TV]

ANCHOR: Residents are reminded

state emergency responders will be spread thin

as acts of civil disobedience continue.

[CROWD SHOUTING OVER TV]

[CELLPHONE RINGS]

[SIREN WAILING IN BACKGROUND]

Hey, Daddy.PATRICK: Hey.

Thought I'd call you back and see how you're doing.

Yeah, uh, they...

they sent me out today.

PATRICK: They did?

Well, listen, honey, congratulations is in order.

[EXHALES SHARPLY] Yeah. Um...

it's been a kinda rough start, but I'm hanging in there.

Anything you want to talk about?

LOU: No. I don't know.

It was just

a heavy day, you know? I... I'm drained.

You know, I've seen a lot of... a lot of shit in my career,

and, um, it's-- You know, that's just...

it just comes with experience

that you don't have at the moment.

But you're a little warrior. All right?

You remember when you were fighting,

and you punched that kid in the face on a defense,

and then you said you liked it?

You had that look in your eyes?

You're a warrior. You got this.

Thanks, Dad.

It's just, um, today hit home.

I... I keep, uh... I keep thinking about Mom.

PATRICK: Lou, we've been through this.

Not now.

LOU: I didn't do enough to save her!

PATRICK: Honey, you were nine years old.

You couldn't have done anything.

[CHILLING MUSIC PLAYING]

What?

Hey, uh... Dad, I, uh...

I gotta get back to work.PATRICK: All right.

I love you, honey. You got this.

LOU: Love you, too.

[CELLPHONE BEEPS]

[HORN HONKING][CHILLING MUSIC CONCLUDES]

Hey.

JASON: First day didn't take you out, huh?

That's good to see.

Well, I don't quit, and I can't leave my partner hanging.

Where's your clean uniform?

Uh, I think I... I got pranked. It wasn't in my locker.

It's 'cause you're a newbie.

Mind you, I'm surprised anyone has time

for that kind of bullshit today.Okay, so you ready to go?

Wow. Okay, so you really wanna jump back in the ring, huh?

Okay.

Go grab your jump bag.

I'm gonna head around to Dock B, and load up

and I'll be back for you in a few.

Okay.

[HELICOPTER WHIRRING]

[SIRENS WAILING]

Pick up, pick up, pick up!

There you are. Listen, you son of a--

Don't you fucking hang up on me again!

I got someone following me, taking pictures.

If this is one of your close friends--

[TIRES SCREECHING]Hey! Think about it.

You and I are gonna have a real fucking problem.

Shit!

Motherfucker hung up on me again.

He's coming to collect. [WHEEZES] He's coming to--

For all the real bad things we done.

VINNY: That's just the drugs talking.

You don't mean none of that. Shit, darling,

I would murder half of this city

if they even looked at you the wrong way.

You know that, right?

Yeah. [EXHALES HEAVILY]Yeah. [EXHALES HEAVILY]

I wanna to go home. [PANTS]

I just got-- I got some business inside.

I just gotta collect real fast. All right?

Get some money.[EXHALES SHARPLY]

[DOOR RUMBLES][INDISTINCT CHATTER]

[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER]

JASON: Hey.Hey.

There's been a request for assistance from Old Town.

They're asking for help. Can you cover it?

Old Town at... at night?

Whoa. Okay. We'll head out.

You good?

Yeah, yeah, I'm good.

Put on your uniform.

That's what I'm talking about, rookie.

The shit is hitting the fan. Are you up to it?

Hundred percent.

I got my game face on.

All right, buddy, one more trip.

[DOORBELL JINGLES]

VINNY: Ni hao,Jia Li!

JIA LI: [IN MANDARIN] I don't want any more trouble.

VINNY: [IN ENGLISH] Then you'd better pay me what I'm owed.

Because I am 100 percent not waiting around for you.

I had looters here.

[IN MANDARIN] How can you expect me to pay you?

[IN ENGLISH] Are you crazy? You--

VINNY: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

Slow down so I can understand you.

[CLICKS TONGUE] Did you say I'm crazy?

Yes.VINNY: Bitch,

you ain't seen me crazy yet.

Fucking asshole.

"Fucking asshole." Oh, is that right?

[CANDY CLATTERS]

Hey!Hey! All right.

[JIA LI YELPS]

VINNY: You need some more inspiration, Jia Li? Huh?

Here. Here.

[CHUCKLES]

See?

It wasn't all that difficult, now, was it?

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING][VINNY CHUCKLES]

You know, this makes me wanna play the lotto.

Your lotto machine still working back there?

[GASPS]VINNY: Jia Li, that is--

[SIREN WAILING]

[CROWD CLAMORING]

[SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING]

On scene.

RICK: Copy. Keep me updated.

LOU: You got a point of contact?

RICK: The caller hung up. Keep your head on a swivel.

Okay. So where's the boys in blue?

They're not required to show up for an unresponsive party.

I suspect they're busy.

Okay, grab a jump bag.

We're proceeding. We'll keep you updated.

RICK: 10-4.

Okay.

Got everything? Okay.JASON: Yup.

JIA LI: [SOBBING] Help! Help! Help! Help!

[GASPS, SOBS] A woman...

[SPEAKING IN MANDARIN]

You must hurry inside! A woman has been hurt.

Can you tell me what happened?

There was a man.

Wearing, like, a white mask. He attacked her.

[IN ENGLISH] Okay, she says

some woman-- There's a woman inside

who's been attacked and seriously hurt.

[IN MANDARIN] I don't know where they went.

Okay. [SHOP BELL JINGLING]

[SPEAKING IN MANDARIN]

[IN ENGLISH] She doesn't know where the man is who did it.JASON: [SIGHS] Great.

We're going to need immediate police backup.

RICK: Well, it's crazy out there right now. Hang tight.

[RAMONA GASPING FOR AIR]

Over here, over here. Ma'am?

Ma'am, my name is Lou with Seattle Fire.

We're here to help you, okay?

All right, she's lost a lot of blood.

Ma'am, can you hear me?

[GASPING]

Looks like we have a lacerated trachea, and--

[RAMONA GASPS, WHEEZES]Oh, at least one nicked carotid.

LOU: Okay, we're gonna need some gauze and a bit of pressure--

We're about to lose power.

Ma'am? Ma'am, can you hear me? Can you hear me?

All right, she's got a lot of-- We got a lot of blood loss.

We have a 1054, and a female party

who is in critical condition. Over.

LOU: Can you--[GASPING]

JASON: I say again.

We have a female party who has been stabbed,

and another possibly injured...

[SOMBER MUSIC CONCLUDES]

RICK: I heard you and I'm working on it.

This is Fire Chief Sutton. Would you please tell me

where in the good goddamn hell their L.E. backup is?

DISPATCH OFFICER: Everything's overloaded.

Yes, I know about the overloaded channels

and the outages, but if there's a unit nearby--

[STATIC CRACKLING]Shit.

[PENSIVE MUSIC PLAYING]

JASON: Okay, I need you to immobilize her head.

Yup, I'm gonna immobilize, then, you can check the wrap, okay?

All right, immobilizing.

Ma'am, stay with us, okay?

I don't have a signal either. Hell, we can't wait. Let's go.

Stay with us, okay?

JASON: Okay...Say when.

BOTH: One, two, three.

We need to get her to Saint Joseph's

as fast as we can.LOU: How far is the hospital?

About 15 minutes on a normal day.

Shit. It is not a normal day.

Shit.Jason...

JASON: It's looking real bad out there.

Okay, let's go, come on, let's go.

Steady, steady.

All right, stay with me, ma'am. All right?

JASON: You guys, get back.

LOU: Okay, okay.

JASON: You folks, you can back off now!

We are fucking first responders!

She's dying, okay?

We need to get her to the hospital.

[CROWD JEERING]

Come on, come on, come on. I know, I know, I know.

Focus. We've got this.

[CROWD SHOUTING, JEERING]

Shit! I'm losing her, Jason!

JASON: Get out of here!

[PENSIVE MUSIC INTENSIFIES]

[FAINTLY] Go, go, go, go, go!

LOU: Jason!

JASON: Three, two, one!

[CROWD CLAMORING, JEERING]

JASON: Back up! Give her space! Back up, come on!

[PANTS]

Th... there's people everywhere.

They're in front of us, they're on top of us.

Jason, in about ten seconds,

there's a Category 8 tornado of human shit

that is about to hit us,

and I do not feel like swimming in shit today.

JASON: I can't start it!

Back up! Give me some room! They're on top of the car!

[GUNSHOTS][GASPS]

All right, move away from the vehicle now.

Go on, get out of here!

Get the fuck out of here, now!

Move! Move! Go on, get out of here!

LOU: Come on!

JASON: Hey, what are you doing?

You can't go in there. You won't make it ten feet.

Can't let you in, we got our orders.

There's still people inside!

DAVID: Hello, Patrick. Remember me?

[THUDS][GASPS]

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

[TIRES SCREECHING]

Ridgeview State Hospital? Yeah, Officer O'Connor.

I'm checking on a patient.

[LOU BREATHING HEAVILY]

I saw that son of a bitch earlier.

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

[GRUNTS][CELL PHONE BEEPING]

There's no signal. Can we drive out of here?

It doesn't work.

He's trynna set us on fire.

LOU: He's gonna... He's gonna burn us alive.

Okay, um...

Aw, fuck, I'm bleeding all over the place.

We gotta... We gotta get the hell out of here.

Come on, come on.

Okay. Okay, come on. Good.

Okay, go, go, go.

Go, go, go, come on.

Come on.

[RUSSO GROANS]

LOU: He's alive... [BREATHES HEAVILY]

Oh, my God, I thought you were dead.

[GROANS]Oh, my God.

Oh.

I'm all fucked up.

[CLATTERING][GASPS]

Okay, we need to go. We need to go.

Come on, be careful.

[GROANS]

We gotta go. Come on.[GROANS]

LOU: Okay, go, go, go. Come on.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

[SCREAMS][EMPTY GUN CLICKS]

Fuck!

Come on, come on!

We gotta go! Go, go, go, go!

[GASPS]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[GROANS]RUSSO: Gate's locked.

LOU: Here, sit...[BREATHES HEAVILY]

Chief, let me take a look...I'm all right.

No, you're not all right. Let me do my job.

You know what? I've been doing this

longer than you, I think I know if I'm all right.

Look at him first. [BREATHES HEAVILY]

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

LOU: Just hold tight, okay.

[RUSSO GROANS]Hold still. Hold still, okay?

Okay. Keep on--

Just breathe, okay? I'm gonna dress your wound.

Keep pressure on it for me, all right?

Okay, lift, lift, lift.[RUSSO GROANS]

LOU: Right there, right there, good.

RUSSO: I think I'm gonna need stitches.

[SIGHS] Did you see the Chief?

He does not look good.

[GROANS]Okay, almost there.

[OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

LOU: All right, we gotta go. You good?

RUSSO: Yeah.LOU: On one, okay?

One, two, three.[GROANS]

LOU: Come on.RUSSO: Okay.

[GATE RATTLES]

LOU: Come on, come on.

[RATTLES GATE AGGRESSIVELY]

Did you see where he went?

I don't know.

Let's not stick around and find out.

Come on, Chief.

[TENSE MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[DOOR CLOSES]

RUSSO: More Latin.

Yeah, it's "to move", or something.

It's locked.

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

Locked. Locked. What! Come on.

RUSSO: This way.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING]

[LATCH CLICKS]

Locked.

LOU: Oh, great.

Well, there's gotta be a phone, or maybe someone living here.

RICK: This place burned down five years ago.

I got nothing.

Well, keep looking, all right? We'll find something.

[RICK GROANING]

LOU: Come on.

RUSSO: I got this. [GRUNTS]

[DOORKNOB RATTLING]

RUSSO: This looks like it was built yesterday.

Windows are shut tight and the boards are reinforced.

Who barricades all the windows and doors?

Someone who doesn't want anyone to get in.

Or out.

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

Oh, my God.

[BREATHES SHARPLY]

RUSSO: Fire Investigator Hale.

[HALE SCREAMS]

[DRAMATIC MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING]

LOU: "Achero..."

RUSSO: What?

"Acheronta".

This is... This is... It means...

Shit, I don't know.

The entrance to the Underworld or something.

Oh, these are messages?

For who?

I know these words. "Flectere".

"Flectere" was on the guy's stomach.

"Si nequeo" was on the dumpster.

This is... this is Virgil's Aeneid

about the founding of Rome.

But what does that mean?

"If I cannot move Heaven, I will raise Hell."

It's a rallying cry. A rallying cry for fighting

against people in power. This... This...

This is quoting my thesis.

He's lured us up here.

Shit, we need to go. Chief, we gotta go. Now.

Come on, we gotta get out of this place.

[VINNY SCREAMING]

[GRUNTS]

[GROANS]

Nice.

Who the fuck are you?

Who the hell are you people? [BREATHES HEAVILY]

RUSSO: Why are you here?

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

I'm looking for the bastard who killed Ramona.

I'm gonna rip his fucking head off.

Yeah, he's after us, too.VINNY: Okay, all right.

Well, here, check this.

There... There's more of us.

Yeah?

So, you guys... You guys can help me.

We'll track him down. No, no, no, listen.

We're trying to get out of here, okay?

What are you afraid of? We outnumber him.

He's a psychopath, okay?

He's already killed several people.

We gotta find a way out of here,

and let law enforcement deal with him.

All the windows are barricaded. Do you know a way out?

VINNY: Ran a little business out of here on this floor

once upon a time.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC CONCLUDES]

VINNY: There's a fire escape on the roof.

RUSSO: Oh, yeah? How does that help us?

VINNY: We can use the fire escape to get down

to the street. What exactly happened here?

Really? It caught fire.

RICK: The building should have been demolished years ago.

Now, it's just drug dealers, and criminals, and...

It's like a moth to a flame. Like your friends down there.

Okay, what about the guy in the mask?

RUSSO: He's not just one of those thugs on the street.

He's probably using them as camouflage.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC CONCLUDES]

How's the leg?Hurts.

LOU: Yeah? Well, don't get stabbed for me again,

all right?

Yes, ma'am.

Yo, did you guys hear that?

[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING OVER RADIO]

Yo, I told you this motherfucker was crazy.

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

[GROANS]

[GROANS]

RUSSO: "Lyssa"?

What does that mean?

She's the Greek goddess of madness and rage.

RUSSO: Somebody's living here.

[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC PLAYING]

LANA: [OVER TV] Five years ago,

I reported just outside this very apartment building

as a fire ravaged this inner-city community

and caused the horrific deaths of an entire family

trapped inside, and earlier this week,

this same building was set on fire yet again,

claiming the lives of several in the homeless community.

Another tragic re...

[CAMERAMAN SCREAMING][LANA SCREAMING]

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING][SCREAMS]

[GASPS] Oh, my God!RUSSO: Turn it off.

RUSSO: That's our reporter.

That's our journalist.

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

[TENSE MUSIC CONCLUDES]

Oh, Jesus.

Chief, you don't look good. No, it's all right.

He just knocked the wind out of me, I'll be all right.

Look, if you're not gonna let me do it...

I didn't kick you out of the Academy.

[CHUCKLES] Yeah, I'm glad you didn't, too.

[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING]

Um, you don't know this, but...

your father and I go way back.

What?

RICK: Yeah. He, uh...

He told me about what happened with you

when you were with your mom when she died,

and you couldn't do anything. That's rough.

Well, um, there was something that I could have done about it.

Yeah, I was nine, but she had taught me

countless times what to do with her EpiPen

if she had an episode, and...

one day, it happened, and I froze.

She just kept mumbling over and over,

"Pick it up, it's in my purse,"

and I couldn't move,

and she could barely breathe, and...

and then, finally, she just stopped.

So, there was something that I could have done.

RICK: Lou, you were a kid.

It was a perfectly acceptable reason

to freeze on your practicum.

It would have been wrong to red-light you

out of the academy, okay?

Not only that,

I wouldn't wanna lose my position

as the most popular instructor in the academy.

[CHUCKLES SOFTLY]

I wouldn't say the most popular.

Whoa...

Ow, now that hurts.

You're okay by me, Chief, and... if it means anything,

I'm glad that my dad...

got you to change your mind about me.

No, you're good at this shit.

You're tough as nails. You're smart, you're focused.

You wanna make a difference.

You're pretty impressive, Lou.

[PLASTIC SHEETS RUSTLING]

Lou... you're gonna wanna see this.

[DRAMATIC MUSIC PLAYING]

LOU: [WHISPERS] "Alecto",

"Tisph... Tisiphone".

"Magaera".

[LOUDER] Alecto, Tisiphone, Magaera!

The Three Furies.

We're really fucking in it now.

[GRUNTS]

What are these?

RUSSO: Cellphone jammers.

That's why our phones aren't working.

[GROANS]

I know this.

"Nemesis,

winged balancer of life,

dark goddess, daughter of Justice."

Who are all these people?

RUSSO: Some of these guys are victims.

Others, I'm not sure.

It looks like he's been tracking these people

through social media for years.

Oh, my God, that... that's the Chief.

What are you doing up there?

[BREATHES SHARPLY]

RUSSO: What about this one?

LOU: That's my dad.

That's from a year ago.

RUSSO: The question is, why are you here?

This was taken this morning.

No, no. No, no, no. This...

How'd the...

[GASPS] This... This is my college thesis.

[GASPS]

How does he have this? I don't understand.

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

The only way he could have this is if...

he was there.

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

What the fuck? "Play me"?

[INDISTINCT CHATTER OVER RECORDING]

RICK: We still have time to put out this fire.

PATRICK: I told you, we let this burn.

[SIREN WAILING]

[GRUNTS]

LANA: Everything. Capture everything,

and after you get footage of it burning,

I wanna see some tears.

I'm on it.

Look at these people standing by.

Look at those people! Listen to me!

Everyone here has skin in the game.

All right? Everyone. The best thing that we can do

is let the fire do its job.RICK: Jesus Christ.

Did you get this?

There's evidence on the fourth floor

that could implicate people

who have been looking after their families.

This is the best thing for the community.

RICK: Oh, my God...PATRICK: Trust me when I say,

there's no one up there.

RICK: It's a goddamn disgrace!

[GRUNTS]

Fuck! [GROANS, BREATHES HEAVILY]

Every fucking minute of every fucking day,

I regret that night.

Do you know what that's like? Do you?

[SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING]

You can never fix it. It just keeps coming.

It tears at you, it gnaws at you.

You fucking just dream of it. [COUGHING]

LOU: Chief. Chief...

[COUGHS]

LOU: You gotta let me look at you, okay?

Ah, fuck. You gotta let me help you.

It's okay.LOU: Let me look at you. Please.

[RICK BREATHES HEAVILY]

We get what we deserve. It's okay.

[OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYING]

[LOU YELPING]

Hey, hey! Hey! Don't, don't, don't, don't, don't.

Look, here we go, all right?

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

DAVID: Vincit omnia veritas.

I don't know what that means.

"The truth..."

"The truth conquers all."

The truth? The truth. The truth.

The truth is that I am so sorry about your family.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[INDISTINCT CHATTER]

Why aren't you guys going up there?

We didn't mean for anyone to get hurt in that fire.

You have to understand, I swear to you. I swear.

What are you saying, Dad?

Honey, I just wanted for you to have a life

that I couldn't have.

It was supposed to be so easy.

I found some narcotics that were ready for destruction.

I pulled them from the evidence room

and gave them to some local dealers.

Everyone gets a cut.

All the department brass have done this

at one point or another in their career.

It was... It was like a rite of passage.

Then Internal Affairs started circling.

PATRICK: We got a problem.

RICK: Internal fucking Affairs?PATRICK: Calm down.

Are you kidding me?

PATRICK: He doesn't have anything.

All right?

It's just, I'm telling you as a courtesy, okay?

As a courtesy?PATRICK: Yes.

I'm gonna handle it. I'm gonna clean up house.

When I'm done, there'll be nothing left.

Nothing fucking left, all right?

The decision was made

to get rid of the evidence, all of it.

So we started a fire.

I don't know what you're talking about?

No, no, no, no, hey, let 'em go, let 'em go.

I'll deal with them later. Let 'em go.

Get outta here.

No one gets inside the building, you know that...

Mike, we have to get up there right now.

If we put that fire out, it's our ass,

simple as that.Shit.

Just let it go. Let it go.

There's still people inside.

My wife and kid are up there!

WOMAN: [SCREAMING] Help! Somebody!

Please!

Help us![CRIES]

[WOMAN SCREAMING][SOBS]

DAVID: Let me go!HALE: He's going in!

Hey, stop him!

Stop him!

We didn't mean for anyone to get hurt in that fire.

You killed his family?PATRICK: No, no, no.

It was an accident.

[SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING]I told him

before he started that fire

to make sure that there was no one in there.

I told him to go through each room

and make sure that there was no one

in that building!

You told me to secure the stairwell.

Make sure nobody gets in...PATRICK: Yeah.

VINNY: ...or out.That's right,

and he fucked up, honey.

I gave him an order to make sure that it was safe.

No one was supposed to get hurt!

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

[GROANS]

DAVID: [RASPING] Murderers...

Help me.

Help me...

Okay, all right.

There's gonna be some questions.

I've already taken care of the reporter.

There's only one more.

There's no way he's gonna survive this.

There's no chance he'll make it through the night,

not with those injuries.

Christ.

His entire family is dead.

That poor bastard.

He set the fire.

Yeah. It's a horrible tragedy...

[WHEEZES]

...but it solves a lot of problems.

RUSSO: But he didn't die.

RICK: He should have, but he didn't.

You set him up.

PATRICK: No, honey, you don't understand.

I just, I wanted you to have a better life

than the one that your mother and I had.

All right? We wanted what was... was best for you.

Because you dese...

You deserve it. All right?

You deserve it, okay?

That money changed our lives.

Know that.

[CRIES]

I wanted to be like you.PATRICK: Honey...

I'm gonna make this right.

I'm gonna make it right.

All right? I promise you.

[VINNY ROARING]

[GUNSHOTS]

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

[DAVID GRUNTING]

VINNY: Let's kill this motherfucker!

Wait!

VINNY: Where'd he go?

Dad, stop!

What are you waiting for?

Come on, let's get this motherfucker!

[BLADE SLICING][GASPS]

[GROANS]

[SPLUTTERING, GASPING]

I gotta finish this. It's all right.

No, don't, don't, don't!

God!

Help my father, please.

Please.All right.

No.

Rick?You should go.

Just go, it's okay.

I'm not leaving you.

Come on.I made a mistake.

No, it doesn't matter now. It doesn't matter.

[SOMBER MUSIC PLAYING]

Just tell me that... I did something good.

You saved me, Chief.

You're doing good. Yeah.

[SOBS]

[SOMBER MUSIC CONCLUDES]

[TENSE MUSIC PLAYING]

[GRUNTS][RATTLING DOORKNOB]

What? What?He's inside.

Shit. "Animus meus."

That's Latin for "My mind..." "My mind is..."

"My mind..." "My mind..." "My mind is a door."

A door opened by what? What opens the door?

Shit...

What opens your mind, David? [BREATHES HEAVILY]

"Si nequeo..."

"If I cannot bend, or move you..."

"Flectere" was on the guy's stomach...

[GASPS]

LOU: "Acheronta".

"The underworld fills my mind..."

[SCREAMS]

LOU: "...with rage."

"Animus meus." That's it, that's it.

That's what all of this has been about this whole time.

Where are you going?

Wait here, it's Lyssa, one of the mannequins!

[BREATHES HEAVILY]

Okay. Okay, okay.

[KEYS RATTLING]Okay.

LOU: Oh, yeah.RUSSO: Ready, Lou?

No, stop, stop, stop!

Stop! Stop![GROANS]

Yes, yes, yes, they're responsible.

They're all responsible,

but killing them is not going to bring

your family back. Think of your wife.

Think of your little boy.

They would not want you to do this.

[GROANS]

[SOBS]

Okay, wait, you... you left those messages for me, right?

Right?

Then we find ourselves taken to a classic story.

Mythology is the ancient superhero.

This is a story we all know,

and that is Michelangelo's David.

Tells that this has stayed within the human psyche.

You wanted me to know why you're doing this, right?

You had to have been there. You were watching me.

I know. I get it. I get it. I understand.

You... You... You used David,

because he fought and won against impossible odds,

taking down Goliath and cutting off his head,

and Aeneas, he traveled to the Underworld,

and he was shown what happens to the wicked.

He was warned to bow to the justice of the gods.

I get it.

I get it. I get it, but please. Please, please!

[CRIES] He's all I have in this world.

No, no.

No, no, Lou, listen to me! I'm sorry!

[GROANS]

[SCREAMS] No![SCREAMING, CRUNCHING]

If you need anything...
