I had a lot of hatred for Arsenal

because I knew they were big rivals.

to go to battle with Arsenal.

or two players you might like,

but I don't remember
liking anybody at Arsenal.

and get my body psyched up
cos I knew I had to be

at my kind of angriest to be at my
best in a sense against Arsenal.

I never felt like that
against any other team,

but Arsenal brought out
something different in me.

to get that challenge.

But, of course,
you had Liverpool before.

But maybe the Arsenal before this

that usually when there's

there's some mutual respect

and people tend to forget

If I was gonna leave anybody out,

When I saw him go through one-on-one

I just knew it was a goal.
And Eric, a big character again.

When he came to United,

United had threatened to win
the league for many, many years.

They'd obviously won a few cups
and Eric was just that difference.

If you're going into battle
against Arsenal,

then you want people like Eric
in your team.

This team, I felt they were
all very good characters

cos this team could play...
Strong, yeah.

Yeah, can play when teams wanted
to play,

and if teams wanted to fight us,

they would fight
with the best of them.

Scholes.

I think Scholes was, for me,
the best... English player,

that I played against.

He generally got it right.

When you're a captain,
the type of character I was,

I would obviously push boundaries
with certain people,

the coaching staff,
to always want the best.

I think sometimes I got it wrong.

but I think nine times out of ten,

I got it right, and I think
that's not a bad average.

What went wrong, then?

I think when we won
the title at Old Trafford

was a really big performance.

That was a good performance
from Arsenal, from myself,

and a bad performance from Roy.

Arsenal had won the FA Cup
four days earlier.

A draw would clinch an historic
third double,

but this was an opportunity
to drive home their new dominance,

to make the enemy suffer.

Winning the title at Old Trafford
in your own house was...

was something fantastic.

We talk about it all week.

We're going there not for a draw,

We are going there to win.

And I think the way we played...

It was a perfect game away from home
because we defend really well,

and Wiltord scored the winning goal.

I always felt, even as a player,

when a team beat you
or were the best team,

then you hold your hand up.

And I think we were always good
at that at United, I think...

but if the team were the better team

throughout the season,
you deserved it

cos you know what it's like
to win the league, it's difficult.

We could say, OK, we're going there
and what was important

was not to lose so we can win
the title next week at home.

But we didn't think that way.

We wanted to win at Old Trafford

because of the rivalry
between the two clubs.

And we say to ourselves it's gonna
hurt them if we win it there.

We knew that if we... won the title

During his nine seasons
in North London,

Arsenal evolved
from their English roots,

but throughout,
Patrick Vieira was a constant.

The rock of that success.

He was by far the best Arsenal
goalkeeper that I played with.

When you look at this here
in the back four,

Adams and Campbell,
really strong.

On the left-hand side,
it was really easy

because I believe
that Ashley Cole at that time,

when he was at Arsenal, for me,

was the best left back
in the country.

It's amazing to let him go
to look back at it, isn't it?

I was quite surprised, to be honest.

I tried to fight a little bit
because I wanted him to stay.

Ashley's supposed to be
the next Arsenal captain. Yeah.

Because he was there from the youth,
he grew up through the club,

playing next to Emmanuel Petit
who, for me,

was the best player I played with
at Arsenal.

On the left-hand side, Pires,

don't do a lot of work defensively
when we don't have the ball.

He makes up for it, yeah.
He will create something.

That's why we gave him
that freedom as well.

You do the minimum, but you make us
win the games going forward.

And Ljunberg who, erm...
was different than Robert.

Not really comfortable on the ball,
with the ball at his feet,

but really clever making the run.

He can score goals.

I bet it must be pretty good.

I think Bergkamp was a big signing
for Arsenal at the time, wasn't he?

If I play against him,
I will be concentrating.

because I still have this game

would be fear, fear of losing,

fear of letting people down,

fear of letting
my neighbourhood down,

fear of letting the family down.

Fear. Fear played a big part
in my sporting career.

The enjoyment at winning
or the frustration at losing?

The enjoyment was very, very brief,
I'm afraid.

Cos before you know it, you're going
into another game

and the fear creeps back in

to let anybody down.

we went into the penalties

No, I didn't have any idea
that was the last game,

and I wasn't thinking
about leaving at all.

The club really didn't fight
or didn't really ask me to stay.

like they did before.

I was really close, leaving
to Madrid, the year before I left.

The deal was done
between the two clubs,

so when it was the time for me
to leave,

I didn't see any reason to leave.

I don't know if it was
lack of courage to go. Yeah.

If I knew I was leaving
the year after,

I was going to Madrid.

I wouldn't say I've got regrets
about not going abroad.

But I think it would have been
a nice experience

to play for a different team.

When my contract ran out
on a couple of occasions,

again, spoke to a few clubs, erm...

Bayern Munich, Juventus, erm...

And, yeah, I was very tempted,

maybe there was a bit of fear.

never felt strong enough to say I'm

When you look at Arsenal,
the way you play,

they play fantastic football,

but I think you need
to win games playing badly,

and I don't think Arsenal
are capable of that at the moment.

at the lack of leadership.

They may not have a Tony Adams,
they don't have a Martin Keown,

they don't have a Sol Campbell.

These kind of players who can be
a leader on and off the field.

What does Man United mean to you?

Obviously,
I felt raw after I left there,

any sort of bad feeling
I had towards them.

And I have a couple
of season tickets now

and I go and watch them with my son,
you know, as much as we can,

so, no, I have that warmth
towards Man United again.

I have to say, I really enjoyed it.

to have played for them.

there's a mutual respect there

for what you have accomplished as

and that's why when they asked me
to do this, I said yes straightaway.

I knew
when I was playing against you,

I had to be at my very, very best,

and for that I appreciate it
and I enjoyed our battles together.

now I meet you away from footballing

and I still have that respect
for you.
