[dramatic music]

- What you are about to witness

is a timeless story.

But perhaps not in the way you expect to witness it.

If, instead, I were to tell you a ghost story

your rational mind would try

to convince you not to believe it.

Yet, believe it you may.

Alone and afraid in the dark.

When the whistling wind feels

like the devil tickling your ear.

You might also be inclined to believe it

if you are on close personal terms with that ghost.

The specter of a once beloved friend pulled back

into time and space by the anguish of an unanswered question

or a deed left undone.

By the shadows cast from the twisted branches of longing.

Tonight, my friends, you shall meet that ghost in the flesh.

[dramatic music]

Jesus, am I glad to see you.

For the best and most unique ghost story

is of the kind when there is no ghost at all.

Instead, the ghost is a man with blood and muscle

and a heart as fragile and vulnerable to deceit

and temptation as yours or mine

and yet who's slaughtered flesh is beyond death

and has a curative power

even in the form of an actor on a musical journey.

The journey that will take him through the past,

the present, and the future.

One that is both history and invention,

theater and synonym.

Man and mythology.

Brothers and sisters, if we were to tell you a ghost story,

one that happens to be true,

you might very well witness your own revival.

Ladies and gentlemen, "Revival!"

and the stone rolled away.

There was no one in the tomb,

nothing but some blood soaked rags.

A woman came there.

She ran away and then came back

with a few of the riff raff that buried him.

- [Cephas] John. John.

John, wait.

[soft mysterious music]

[Cephas laughing]

He's alive!

He's alive. - He's alive!

Oh come on, my sister.

You can do better than that.

Well see now that's what I'm talking about.

The kind of man that likes to give.

- Brothers, you see all these things

and I tell you that the woman, she gave more than the rest.

- How?

She only had two pennies.

One of the men came off of like a few hundred.

- Yeah but he was giving out of his excess.

The woman, she gave all she had.

- Given by us.

Do you have any idea what you've just done?

Apart from destroying an entire day of trade?

- I've helped you take out the trash.

- The money is changed from the currency of the Gentiles

to our own currency,

that which is acceptable to God.

How are we meant to give an offering to the temple

with the same coins?

Do you suggest we not pay the taxes?

Had I done so, the arrogance of a heretic

would not allow me to rest in my tomb.

- You've made it perfectly clear to us in the past

that you prefer to handle your own affairs.

- There are times, my lord,

when temple and state share a common end.

This blasphemer claims to forgive sin

and therefore break the laws of Rome and temple.

- You're stretching, priest.

There aren't enough prisons to hold all the scofflaws

and heretics and ne'er-do-wells in Judea.

Bring me something good.

A murder, a revolt

and I shall imprison whoever you like.

- Imprisoning him is not our request.

- What then?

- Death.

- Death? For what offense?

The ravings of a dreamer?

- These are high crimes, governor.

- Not because you say so, priest.

Has he even had a trial?

- We've just concluded one this morning.

- I see.

You will forgive us if we judge for ourselves.

Jesus, do come in, please.

[gentle music]

I didn't let on in front of that mob out there.

I have heard of you.

My soldiers man the garrison that overlooks the temple.

You've disrupted the place more than once.

I'm shocked you haven't been stoned already.

They've done it before.

Will no doubt do it again.

Where are you from?

- Nazareth.

- The place is cursed as am afraid you may be.

What's all this king business?

- Do you want to know for yourself

or because others have said this about me?

- I've no stake in it whatsoever.

I'm not a Jew.

You're own people have handed you over to me.

What have you done to them

that makes them so envious and blood thirsty,

other than disagree with them?

Did you call yourself their king?

- My kingdom is not from this world.

If my kingdom were from this world,

my servants would fight for me and stop my arrest.

- So you are a king?

- Those are your words.

I will tell you I have been born

and come into the world for this purpose.

Everyone who can receive the truth listens to my voice.

- What is truth?

This will be tricky.

[gentle mysterious music]

Come along.

I'll see what I can do for you.

[crowd shouting]

Caiaphas and citizens,

this man has committed no crime.

You've twisted the truth

to rid yourself of a harmless zealot.

Banish him from your temples and have him pay a fine.

Fall to your prayers and leave us in peace.

- This is not justice, my lord.

- Nor is murder.

- It is better to eradicate the problem

before it becomes full grown.

Our people will forever thank you.

- He poses no problem for Rome

nor can we accommodate your request.

Every crucifix on Golgotha is spoken for.

In an hours time the entire hillside

will be littered with hanging corpses,

many of whom you condemned.

There isn't any room for him.

- Then release one of the others.

- I don't understand your wrath.

- [Crowd] Crucify him! Crucify him!

- Here is what I will do.

Have him beaten.

How many lashes did we give that villain Barabbas?

- He took 13, sir.

- Double it. In fact, triple it.

Take him and bring him back.

- [Crowd] Crucify him! Crucify him!

[tense dramatic music] [crowd shouting]

[ominous music] [men vocalizing]

[whip cracking] [thunder roaring]

[ominous music]

This is becoming obscene.

- This is not what we asked of you, governor.

- Since you strive so piously to do Rome a service

and to appease the masses, I will leave the choice to you.

It is our custom on these high days

to release to you a prisoner.

A full pardon from the sentence of death.

The choice is yours.

There is one Barabbas, a sworn enemy

to the seat of Roman power and a murderer also

and here one Jesus of Nazareth, king of the Jews.

A man half dead from the beating he just received,

scourged and humiliated beyond recognition,

bereft of friends and without a corner to turn to.

Who would you have released into your fold?

- Crucify him! - Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

Barabbas! Barabbas!

[tense suspenseful music]

- So be it.

Let the record show

I am not responsible for this man's blood.

Water.

[somber music]

My soldiers will lead him to the hill,

should he last that long.

There will he hang until death from crucifixion.

- [Crowd] Crucify him! Crucify him!

- Jesus, you die a wrongful death.
