[A Love Story of Oiled Paper Umbrella]

[Episode 1]

During the Yongchang era,

demons invaded the human world.

People in Dazhou suffered a lot.

Fortunately, Li Shiyi, the world's greatest demon hunter,

and Baize Gong worked together,

captured thousands of demons

and sealed them in the Scroll of Mountains and Seas,

a magical weapon guarded by the Baize family for generations.

But they didn't know whoever uses the Scroll

will inevitably suffer serious consequences.

Soon after, the entire Baize family were executed.

Li Shiyi died tragically at home.

Since then, the Scroll has gone missing.

[15 years later]

Master!

Leave me alone!

Leave me alone!

I am

Meng Xizhou,

specializing in selling murder houses.

People call me Chirp.

I'm the top female agent in Changle City.

[Agent: Meng Xizhou]

There's no house I can't sell.

This house is the most notorious murder house in Changle City.

I will sell it today.

[Uncle Wu's Agency. We'll help you realize your dream of living in Changle City]

Come on, sell it.

The layout is quite nice,

but it's a murder house.

Ladies and gentlemen.

Ladies and gentlemen,

this house

has a compact layout.

It has three rooms and a small courtyard.

Facing south with its back to the north.

It's quite nice.

Especially suitable for

young couples who have worked hard for years

in Changle City.

Facing south with its back to the north.

The main room is too small.

Sir.

Think about it.

I don't need to tell you the price of houses

in the East Market

of Changle City.

And, it's next to

the Right Chancellor's mansion.

The Pingling Academy

is right down the street.

It's a government-designated school

that you can't get into for any amount of money.

It's perfect, don't worry.

Since it's a murder house,

why don't you

tell us

how people died in this house?

Yeah, tell us about it.

Yeah. So that we can stop worrying.

Of course,

people died here.

But,

a good house is one

that costs you less.

Am I

right?

It's cheap.

The owner and his wife

died where you're standing.

This is the crime scene

of the famous

Zhuque Street massacre.

How did he know?

Is he…

It's okay.

It's okay.

Don't worry.

I'll go check it out.

Don't be afraid.

It's just an old broom.

Umbrella,

you've been with me for over a decade.

Why are you suddenly reacting today?

That's strange.

It's okay.

Just an old broom.

Just an old broom.

Wait for me!

Wait for me!

[Nan's Umbrella Shop]

♫It's raining♫

♫Without an umbrella, the rain lightens the ink♫

♫Your words bring you to life before me♫

♫I'm afraid mine won't be enough to tell you how much I've missed you♫

You must be tired, Yi.

Here, have some pastries.

[Nan Fengyi, Director of the Court of Judicature and Revision]

♫In this world♫

♫There are demons, monsters, humans and celestials♫

What are those this time?

Come on.

♫If one is in love♫

♫It's already lucky to even see the person you love♫

Sit down.

[Nan Sixu, manager of the Nan's Umbrella Shop]

No girl has been interested in you, right?

No.

Here.

Great chicken soup.

It can activate blood circulation

and improve your immune system.

Here.

Tianwang Cardiotonic Pill,

Zhibao Pill,

Shanhai Pill,

Bencao Pill.

The Big Dipper Primordial Spell

is the highest-level of spell of a fifth-rank demon hunter.

It can't be done at one go.

If I do it this way,

I'll end up dying from poisoning.

Besides, these four pills look the same.

Don't say that.

Back in the day,

I changed your diapers

and fed you.

I never

got married because of you.

I never complained.

You'll break my heart

if you don't finish the soup.

Fine.

No one noticed you're practicing the Big Dipper Primordial Spell, right?

No.

Are you sure no girl is interested in you?

I'm sure.

It's for the best.

Trust me.

I've told

every girl in this neighborhood

who was even slightly interested in you.

They

will never

have any fantasies about you.

Good.

They are not the reason

why you need strong kidneys.

I'm telling you again.

Only by staying a virgin

can you accumulate the energy of yang

and master more advanced spells.

Your father was also a passionate young man

before he mastered the spell.

He often found it difficult

to suppress his urges.

You always get angry when I mention your father.

It seems you still won't forgive him.

All these years, I've been living in hiding and practicing.

All thanks to him.

You have every reason not to forgive him.

Nan!

Nan!

I bought a house!

Nan!

I own a house now.

You bought a murder house.

I'm a coroner,

full of righteousness.

Besides, it's quite nice.

The Court is within walking distance.

There's also a government-designated school nearby.

By the way,

Nan,

Peirong and I

saved the 500,000 coins you borrowed us

by bargaining.

Are you humans or demons?

[Peirong, the coroner's wife]

My husband is a coroner at the Court of Judicature and Revision.

He did the autopsy

on this case.

A coroner?

There's

no one else left.

[Hui Fang, coroner of the Court of Judicature and Revision]

Sell it to me

for 500,000 coins less.

Then I'll buy it

reluctantly.

What about Peirong?

She's pregnant.

Return it.

It's 500,000 coins cheaper.

I'm not returning it.

I'm not.

If he insists,

I need to do an exorcism for him.

But I can't let Hui Fang know I can practice magic now.

Or my secret will be discovered.

[Dan Wu's Agency]

This murder house

is in a good location,

but someone died here.

Speaking of deaths,

it's not unusual for people to die in old houses.

It's

a nice yard.

If you're really worried,

I'll have Chirp

go over

to do

an exorcism.

[Uncle Wu, Meng Xizhou's foster father]

I guarantee you'll live peacefully

and comfortably.

A young lady?

Can she handle it?

Why do you think I went through all this trouble to raise her?

Here's the truth.

Her father

was

the world's greatest demon hunter,

Li Shiyi.

She's Li Shiyi's daughter?

Then please arrange for us to see the house.

Okay.

We'll come back tomorrow.

Goodbye.

Goodbye.

Gosh.

I don't even have time to eat.

-Why are you back so early? -Uncle Wu.

Has the murder house been sold?

Where's the money?

Where's the money?

Give it to me.

There should be 500,000 coins more.

Uncle, you have no idea.

A coroner showed up and reconstructed the crime scene.

And there was a cat. Super weird.

It scared all the clients away.

It's

500,000 coins!

I wanted to sell it fast.

You…

Nice try.

You're good-for-nothing.

You couldn't pass the preliminary test

of the Celestial Master's Mansion.

You can't even be a good agent.

I know I don't have much talent.

I've given up hope of becoming a demon hunter.

Then why do you carry that umbrella every day?

Your father is the famous Li Shiyi.

Fine.

Don't go home

until you give out all the leaflets.

Uncle.

Can I take a break?

Go.

Fine.

Uncle Wu's Agency.

We'll help you realize your dream of living in Changle City.

Take a look.

You're good-for-nothing.

You couldn't pass the preliminary test of the Celestial Master's Mansion.

[Celestial Master's Mansion]

I know I don't have much talent.

I've given up hope of becoming a demon hunter.

Miss Master,

please cut me loose.

Are you

really Li Shiyi's daughter?

How could he have such a loser daughter like you?

You have no magical powers.

[Du Yuelian, master of the Celestial Master's Mansion]

How dare you want to be a demon hunter?

She must have failed

the preliminary test many times.

[Guo Ji, master of the Celestial Master's Mansion]

You were born sickly.

[Du Fenglei, Lord of the Celestial Master's Mansion]

You're not cut out for casting spells.

If you can catch one minor demon,

by any means necessary,

I'll let you enter the Celestial Master's Mansion without taking the tests.

That cat was really weird.

If it's a demon,

I'll get in after I catch it.

[Sikong's Mansion]

My umbrella reacted

in this house that day.

I'll wait for it here

and see if it really is

a demon.

What is this strange power?

I feel

completely refreshed.

My internal power has redoubled.

So much magical power.

Is the cat demon

above me?

What should I do?

It's male.

Meow.

Meow, meow.

Meow, meow.

She's a demon.

Male or female,

I should catch it first.

Come here, kitty.

Shut up.

I'll catch you first.

I summon the thunder!

Demons, tremble!

Five-thunder Flame!

It's the legendary

Five-thunder Flame Formation of the Baize family.

It's been lost for a long time.

How does he know it?

Demon!

Here's the Five-thunder Flame Formation,

reveal your true form now!

Kitty,

you must be mistaken.

This is my true form.

Don't touch me!

You.

What kind of sorcery did you use

to keep pulling me?

You.

You came at me first.

Yet you're accusing me?

You…

Your nose is bleeding again.

Two foolish humans.

I shouldn't have bothered coming out to see you.

Demon!

Demon?

Where is it?

Stop!

It's emitting a black aura

and speaking human language.

She can tell I'm a demon.

Does she have Demon-Recognizing Pupils?

Nan.

Coroner.

You know each other?

Yes.

This is

Agent Meng Xizhou.

She sold me the house.

Who is he?

He's

the Director of the Court of Judicature and Revision,

Nan Fengyi.

Director of the Court of Judicature and Revision?

He's here

to help me do an exorcism.

You can do it too?

No wonder

you knew how to use that talisman.

Like that.

-Talisman? -Calabash.

You said he should hang some calabashes

in this yard.

It'll be good for the owner.

Calabashes.

That cat,

you said it was a demon?

Yes.

I saw it with my own eyes.

It was a demon.

There's...

There's a demon in this house?

Listen, Coroner.

Demon or not,

I'll help you get rid of it.

Do you want to give it a try?

1,000 coins.

-1,000 coins? -She didn't need a magical weapon.

She can identify demons with her eyes.

What kind of special ability is that?

Nan can do it too.

Come on.

We'll clean the whole house for you for free.

You can move in

after everything is settled.

It's very reassuring.

Sounds professional.

500 coins.

500 coins. Bottom price.

500 coins.

50 coins.

No more.

You...

Come here.

Let me tell you,

I

do have the power

to make people move.

If you don't cooperate,

I'll embarrass you in front of

your friend.

Catching demons isn't an easy job.

Here, take it all.

Hui Fang,

leave it to her. Let's go.

Okay.

Umbrella!

That's strange.

I was able to channel my power just now.

Is it

gone?

How could

that woman make me move towards her?

And she claimed she could recognize demons.

Ridiculous.

Yi,

you seem off today.

What do you mean?

Has anyone found out

you know how to

use talismans and cast spells?

Uncle!

There's

a feminine scent on you.

Uncle, it's all in your head.

Yi,

you shouldn't think about personal affairs

until you revive the Baize family.

This is the most crucial moment.

Don't be distracted

by those

misbehaving women.

Do you understand?

Answer me!

[Imperial Palace]

[Mingzong, the Emperor of Dazhou]

Nan Fengyi.

The entire Baize family were executed back in the day.

I believe you know very well

I kept you alive

so that you can

serve me at any time.

I will

forever be grateful for Your Majesty's kindness.

Lord Pei.

[Pei Xun, the Chief Minister of the Court of Judicature and Revision]

Your Majesty.

Rise.

I summoned you here today

to talk about Situ Hanshan.

We must get rid of him

to maintain the peace of Dazhou.

I've been

secretly gathering evidence

of Right Chancellor's clique and corruption.

But

Right Chancellor is very cunning.

He's left no trace.

And,

Situ's Mansion is heavily guarded all the time.

It must be extremely difficult

to get to his books.

There'll be an opportunity

if we wait.

[You're invited to the birthday party held at the Right Chancellor's Mansion on September 5th]

The six

favorite foods of cats in Dazhou,

I brought

them all here.

Sorry.

I also added some knockout drops.

Right Chancellor Situ really knows how to get along with people.

Free stage outside the mansion to win over the people.

Lavish banquet inside to make useful contacts.

I'm Chief Minister Pei.

I'm here to congratulate Right Chancellor Situ on his 40th birthday.

[Han Qi, guard of the Right Chancellor's Mansion]

Here's my gift.

Please, come in.

Do you know how much it costs?

Follow him.

Don't get yourself wet.

Okay.

That guy is sneaky.

Got ya!

Is that you, kitty?

Why can't I sense your demonic aura?

I can't

understand what you're saying either.

A Journal of My Remaining Years.

Did you leave this, kitty?

Looks like this cat

is owned by Lord Sikong's son,

Sikong She.

No wonder it doesn't want to leave this mansion.

It's actually an affectionate cat.

Have you seen Lord Pei from the Court of Judicature and Revision?

No.

Go find him!

Yes.

Hurry!

Pei,

what are you doing at Sikong's Mansion?

Little greedy cat.

Looks like the knockout drops...

It

worked.

Who...

Who are you?

Not bad, Umbrella.

Come on.

Oh, no.

Umbrella fails at the crucial moment.

Umbrella! Umbrella!

Umbrella.

Umbrella.

Help me!

This strange feeling again.

My magical powers seem to have suddenly increased.

What's happening?

Help me!

You killed him.

I...

He's a demon!

Who sent you?

Why did you kill him?

It wasn't me.

It was my umbrella.

I don't know what happened either.

Director Nan.

I'm the agent who sold that murder house.

Remember?

We met in this very house.

Don't be fooled by his appearance.

His body

has been taken over by a puppet worm.

Bullshit!

He was the Chief Minister of the Court of Judicature and Revision.

Chief Minister?

Oh, no.

You can explain everything in details

when we get to the Court.

Take her back!

[Situ's Mansion]

Master.

Pei Xun is dead.

[Situ Hanshan, Right Chancellor]

How did he die?

Some female agent

stabbed him with an umbrella

in the yard next door.

I didn't expect these parasitic puppet spirits

to be killed so easily.

Never mind.

Doesn't matter.

But…

If the Court do an autopsy,

our plan will be ruined.

Right, we should be more careful.

Han Qi,

take care of

Pei Xun's body.

Yes.

Are we still on

tonight?

Call it off.

Wait for another opportunity.

Yes.

[Court of Judicature and Revision]

Come on.

Go in there.

What's with the injury?

I was wounded by Lord Pei's hidden arrow.

He wanted to kill me.

I had no choice but to fight back with all my powers.

Lord Pei shot hidden arrows at you?

Yes.

But Lord Pei didn't have any magical powers.

He didn't?

He didn't?

Director Nan!

I didn't kill anyone, Director Nan.

[Young Meng Xizhou]

Which is above form is called Dao,

and which is under form is called "an object".

This is

[Li Shiyi, Meng Xizhou's father]

the way of demon-catching.

Father, are you really a demon hunter?

Why have I never seen you catch demons?

All the demons in the world

have been captured in the Scroll of Mountains and Seas

There are no demons left for me to catch.

When I grow up, I want to be

the world's greatest demon hunter.

Father.

I didn't do it.

I didn't do it.

Father,

I caught my first demon.

But I never expected it

to turn out like this.

Meng Xizhou,

a registered agent in the metropolitan prefecture,

mainly engages in buying murder houses at low prices and reselling them

There's no connection between her

[Huo Ting, guard of the Court of Judicature and Revision]

and Lord Pei or Lord Situ.

I saw Pei enter

Situ's Mansion.

Maybe he did find the books.

But he fled in panic and climbed over the wall

to avoid the guards.

But even so,

why would Meng Xizhou kill him?

Maybe

Pei really was

possessed by some puppet worm as she said?

Director.

No hidden weapons

or books were found at the crime scene.

[Huo Xiao, guard of the Court of Judicature and Revision]

I'm pretty sure Pei didn't

hurt that Agent Meng.

I told you she's full of lies.

What about Situ's Mansion?

Was there anything unusual tonight?

Nothing unusual.

No.

The guards of Situ's Mansion

were clearly looking for him.

By the way,

we found a journal

inside Meng Xizhou's hamper

at the crime scene.

Belongs to Sikong She,

[A Journal of My Remaining Years]

the man responsible for the Zhuque Street massacre.

We also found food laced with knockout drops.

But there was no sign of the cat she talked about.

Maybe Meng Xizhou

and Sikong She knew each other.

Nan,

I'll go get her now.

Let's ask her.

Meng Xizhou,

Director Nan wants to question you.

Come on.

Have…

Have you found something?

No questions.

You'll know when you get there.

Even demon-catching magical weapons

can't detect its demonic aura.

Was there really a puppet worm?

This umbrella clearly had great magical power,

but now it's gone.

Maybe

there really are some mysteries here.

This familiar feeling again.

No.

This strange attraction again.

Huo Ting,

you go outside.

I need to question her alone.

Yes.

What?

I haven't even interrogated you yet,

and you're already scared?

I'm not scared.

It's always the anvil that breaks the hammer.

Was it you who kept pulling me earlier?

What?

You're scared?

I lied.

I only said it to get extra money.

As for the pulling,

I don't know why it happened either. Director Nan.

If you don't want to suffer,

confess.

What's your relationship

with that death row inmate, Sikong She?

Sikong She?

Speak!

I don't know who Sikong She is.

You don't know him?

He's kept in the cell next to yours.

The house you sold to Hui Fang

is his.

[Sikong She]

His journal was found in your hamper.

And you're telling me you don't know him?

I have nothing to do with him.

I've never said a single word to him in prison.

As for that journal,

I found it.

That…

That…

That cat demon left it.

That cat demon.

The one

from the first time we met

at the murder house.

It's a friend of Sikong She's.

It must have brought it to me

to tell me something.

But

I couldn't activate my Demon-Recognizing Pupils at that time.

I couldn't talk to it.

This Demon-Recognizing Pupils you keep talking about,

what is it?

When it's activated, I can see demon forms.

I can even talk to demons.

You were able to recognize demons again

when Chief Minister Pei showed up?

Yes!

No.

At first,

I couldn't see it.

But somehow,

suddenly I could see it again.

I saw

a puppet worm inside his body.

Go on.

It's been banned in Dazhou for a long time.

So, I was pretty shocked

when I saw it that night.

Do you think I'll believe you?

Yes.

If you have a coroner cut open his body

and find the puppet worm inside,

it will prove that what I said

is all true.

Nan.

The Court is on fire.

The criminal law library, the archive and the study

are all burning.

All the important physical evidence is here.

We can't let anything bad happen to it.

Lock her up.

I'll interrogate her later.

What should we do?

If the morgue is also burning,

Lord Pei's body will be…
