Oh, my gosh! [ Laughs ]

We can't get these cheesy smiles off our faces.

Adam: These are our prismatic deer.

They're beautiful.

Narrator: ...because the Great Christmas Light Fight...

When people ask me how I do it,

I say, "Zip ties and coffee."

I see a spot over there. Make sure you touch it up.

Yeah. That's it. I got it.

Mike: Rhonda and I started decorating

when we first got married in 1973.

Rhonda: Mike -- he's the builder.

That's right. I can build it if she can explain it.

Our light show is all kinds of different mediums and props.

Mike: Let's launch our most recent sequence

now that we've added a bunch of props to the scene.

We like to call our custom prop process colorization

because of the mediums we use.

Mike: We have the smart nodes around the inside,

and this is what really gives us our color pop.

Colorizing these props with smart nodes

takes your light show to just a different level.

I haven't seen one like ours before.

Ours is kind of different and kind of special.

Very unique.

Get those spots, freshen it up.

Yes, ma'am.

For me, getting to be on

"The Great Christmas Light Fight"

has been a bucket list of mine.

It's looking so good.

I have lymphoma, and I also have breast cancer.

And with all of my health issues,

we almost didn't make the display.

Let's go, girls. Let's get this yard ready to go.

We had our family rally 'round.

They just came to the rescue.

Good job.

We are the Wright family, and we persevere.

No matter what comes our way,

we're going to go, go, go.

What a dream come true it is. Absolutely.

What kind of display do you have?

We have a synchronized slide show, but it's different.

It's hard to describe, but when you see it,

Well, I love it already.

We have a magical paintbrush.

What? And we're gonna present it to you.

[ Laughs ] Oh, my gosh. You get to paint it.

That's a massive candy cane and a paintbrush.

So what do I have to do?

You're gonna paint that snowflake,

and our colorful light display is going to come on.

I love the lights underneath the ice rink.

That's a great effect.

Carter: I love these cutouts. There are so many of them.

You've added so many different pieces and elements in here.

Is that a Jawa?

Rhonda: That is a Jawa. Mike: That's a Jawa.

I'm glad you recognize it.

You got two of them here. I saw Yoda back here.

Got Spider-Man.

This section is our "Star Wars" and superheroes.

I love it. And he hand-draws them.

No projectors, no tracings. Do you really?

I do. He looks at the picture, and he really, truly does.

They all look great.

We do a different way of coloring them

and bringing them to life. Yeah.

If you look close, this one right here --

you see how it's got the more rainbow-ish holographic... Oh, yeah, on the top.

And it changes. So we use a holographic material

and it's all done by hand.

I mean, this is something that you stick on?

Yeah, yeah. So we cut it, we peel it, we stick it on.

They're glittered. They're holographic.

They give such a great effect.

Yeah. The boldness, yeah. Yeah.

We call it colorization.

Colorization. That's our name for it -- colorization.

This is definitely a different technique

than I've ever seen.

All right, well, this is the fun area

'cause we get to get back in here.

Tell me about the castle.

Castle is 10 feet tall.

Wow. Has 792 nodes on it.

It almost takes more time to drill all the holes

than it does to do anything else.

I can imagine.

And then the matrix behind me? that is massive.

1,200 individual nodes,

and we can get it to do some pretty spectacular things.

I like over here you have more traditional elements.

These are a combination of what we call hard-body props. Uh-huh.

We try and add the new smart lights

around the traditional elements.

We sort of bring the two worlds together in that way.

This is amazing area.

I love the lights underneath this ice rink.

Yeah, aren't they cool? They're super cool.

That's all Rhonda's idea.

I taught competitive skating.

So you can't just have a plain ice rink. Yeah.

Gotta have something underneath.

I feel like, you know, being from Michigan,

ice skater myself, so I noticed that you had

two places to ice skate, which is awesome.

The lights underneath this white tarp just --

it dances.

People ask us all the time how we do it.

We just can't tell them. It's a secret.

[ Laughter ]

This is our toy shop area. Uh-huh.

And this we did with older wireframe.

Regularly, you can see through it, right? Yeah.

So we took the coro, which is the plastic...

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. ...put it behind it,

and then we hand-painted it to give it more dimension.

I don't know if I've ever seen anything like this

with the wireframes behind it.

And then this Santa -- we did the same thing,

but we couldn't get yellow lights here or red,

so we had to paint those.

It's a great effect.

Guys, this mega tree is massive.

How tall is it?

15 feet.

15 feet! It is huge.

I went to the hardware store

and picked up the 3/4-inch PVC pipe...

Uh-huh. ...and put it all together.

I mean, the frame on the back -- did you --

you didn't weld that, did you?

No, it's all aluminum u-channel.

Okay. You guys have really figured out

how to maximize your entire space.

We try to cover this house, you know,

try to hide it with all the display.

Yeah.

Hey, you got snow!

We got snow! We got snow in California.

Wow. That is so fun.

That is a severe Michigan snowstorm.

This is just like home. Oh, it looks so good.

Okay. This snowman?

That's our snow mouse.

Your snow mouse. Our dancing snow mouse.

This is great. Did you make all of this?

I made all that. It's a complex machine.

It is a -- what's going on back here?

It's got, like, four pivot points in there. Uh-huh.

So as the motor moves one part,

everything else sort of shifts a different direction.

And you just have one motor right here.

That's so smart, 'cause how many

different layers do you have on it?

I think there's five layers.

Just another unique piece that only you guys have.

We try to be unique.

The fact that it's moving

and all of this color on here is even better,

which is something that you've done

throughout your entire display.

This display is so saturated

with all of these vibrant, beautiful colors.

The Wrights have figured out colorization,

which is different colors, layers, holographics.

It's like a coloring book come to life.

Wright family, I mean, how cool is that?

What do you think? I thought it was great!

I was so impressed -- the way you were able to blend in

all of the traditional older elements

with just a great, new, modern, contemporary light show.

It's really special what you guys have created

and the fact that the two of you do this together.

I can't thank my husband enough

for everything he does out in this yard,

and he does a lot.

I'm battling cancer... Mm.

...and so this keeps us as a distraction

as you're going through treatment.

It's just -- it's magical. You know, just... Yeah.

That's a good term. I can't even think about it.

I mean, I'm tearing up. Yeah.

Sorry. It's okay.

I appreciate how much this man does for me.

and he -- he brings my dreams to life.

Sometimes there's mountains we have to overcome out here,

Natasha: Our journey began from online dating.

I hearted Patrick's Christmas picture,

and instantly he was like, "So, you like Christmas?"

And it worked. And it worked.

We're so into Christmas

that we actually had a Christmas-themed wedding.

We had live reindeer for our wedding,

Christmas decorations, centerpieces.

It was all Christmas. [ Laughs ]

Just kind of do little spurts of spray paint on it.

Natalie: Like that? Yeah, it's looking like a cupcake.

Patrick: We have a Texas-sized display.

We have over 40 cities represented in the display.

Each of these cities is according to their theme.

Like, Godley, Texas, has

all of our Nativity scenes that we have.

Brandon: Luckily, Texas is so big

it gives us so many cities to work with.

I think this is my favorite episode.

Natasha: Our first date, we actually had

a "Great Christmas Light Fight" marathon.

And just to see it come full-circle

and us being on it together is so special.

This arch is pretty special to us.

This is where we got engaged.

I proposed to her under this arch. Really?

as our first piece that you walk into.

This is awesome. Who likes Christmas more?

Oh, that's a toss-up. Oh, that's a hard one.

Yeah. That's a toss-up. I think I met my match.

What do you got, a bunch of animals in here?

So all of these are actual cities in Texas.

So Cat Spring is personally my favorite

'cause cats are my favorite. Understandable.

Brandon: Farmersville and Dog Ridge.

So you got a little theme happening right here.

Do you have names for the animals?

That one's name is Mr. Wings.

Mr. Wings.

Yeah. That's a great name.

The band. Awesome.

College Station. College Station.

I mean, I can hear the drums beating...

Natasha: Yes. ...already.

This city is Godley. That's a real city?

That's a real city.

I mean, it kind of makes sense to be right here.

Seven different Nativity scenes here. Wow.

This is what started the display. Uh-huh.

The manger is the first item that I had.

My dad and I built this together.

Passed it down to me.

Probably a year or two after, he passed.

Nothing's been touched on it since,

and that was 20 years ago. Geez.

Yeah. That's really impressive.

By the way, good job making it.

I mean, it looks perfect. It really does.

It's still holding up. It's still going.

I love that you have all the cities

around your entire display. Houston over here.

Woodville, which is east Texas. Woodville.

And... [ Laughter ]

Are you kidding?! No!

Oh, my gosh! [ Laughs ]

Yes! That is an actual city in Texas.

Whoa! What is happening?

Carter: [ Laughs ] Oh! What?!

We had a local artist draw this up for us.

This is Carter, Texas.

And, of course, we had to put the classic red car.

Carter: You guys are pulling out all the stops.

We are. I am so impressed right now

and embarrassed, too.

Natasha: Yes. San Antonio, Texas.

So you got the river walk. Yeah, that's cool.

And he built the Alamo. Yeah.

And he did the bridge. Yeah.

The yellow rose of Texas --

I built that to completely custom frame, too.

Did you really? Yeah.

I built that tornado. Texas tornado.

Carter: I love that. That's sweet. Yeah.

And the presents flying around in the tornado.

I have never seen anything like that.

I love Sugarland, Texas. Those lollipops look amazing.

My daughter and I made all the lollipops.

Made out of a pool noodle.

Pool noodles? Who knew?

Well, look at this beauty.

Patrick: Yeah. Oh, my gosh.

Natasha: This was a kids' playhouse. Okay.

And we decided to give it a very special gingerbread feel.

What is going on here?

I mean, this is incredible!

Yeah, it's a spray foam, and you paint it.

Must have used, like, 10 cans on this thing.

Right?

Actually inside of there is a yoga ball. Oh.

So a life choice had to be made. Yeah.

Cupcakes or yoga. Yeah, I love that.

So we chose cupcakes.

That is the coolest cupcake I've ever seen.

Good job, kid.

Carter: How creative was it for the Mach family

to name all these cities around Texas?

So that way they could have different themes.

Really fun, very inventive. These guys nailed it.

You have so much fun? All: Yeah!

That was such a treat.

I mean, when all the lights went on,

[mimics explosion] you just blew my mind,

seeing how far your display runs,

the size, the scope,

seeing all of those different cities.

Coming full circle, just watching this on date nights

and the show bringing us together even further,

and then now actually being on it is very special.

Patrick: Yeah.

It's really special.

Welcome to colorful Colorado!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

I've loved Christmas lights ever since I was a little kid.

It's the last one on the roof.

Glad to get that done before the snow.

Adam: As long as I can remember, my aunt and uncle

went all out at Christmastime.

They had such a huge display, and I always just loved it.

Stand up straight here.

Eventually, Aunt Jo and Uncle Jim decided

that it was time to step down.

We looked at each other, and I think it took us

about a minute to decide that we have to do this.

It's the same family. It's the same Christmas lights.

And the only thing that's changed is the address.

Time to upgrade the old light bars with L.E.D.s.

Adam: What's special to me is that we almost never

throw Christmas decorations away.

How long ago did your aunt and uncle make these?

I bet it's been at least 15 or 20 years.

We like to rehab them and give them new life.

I bet we've been looking at this reindeer

for the last 35 Christmases.

Anyone can buy lights, but for us,

it's all about family tradition.

And that trophy would look wonderful

in our Christmas display.

Well, it started out as a family tradition. Uh-huh.

My aunt and uncle did this for 40 years.

Wow! And then when we decided

to sell our home and downsize,

these precious children stepped up and decided

that they would keep going, and they have kept going.

I love it. It's beautiful.

Plus, when the lights are glowing,

Santa will always be able to find us on Christmas.

That is correct.

And that is the major point, right?

Well, I am excited.

How do we get this party started?

For 40 years, Uncle Jim and I decorated our home

with a great deal of love and care,

and we are honored to pass this on to you

and to thank you for keeping our family traditions going.

I love how you did the lights on the house,

the nice, big, thick, chunky lights.

And you put two strands on there.

Oh, my gosh. The parachuting Santa.

You have a perfect house to decorate.

There's so many beautiful things to see.

Well, this is the original Nativity -- most of it is.

So this was your Nativity scene.

What year did you guys get this?

Maybe the '80s. Maybe.

Has anything changed?

Have you had to modify these in any way?

Jessica: I took apart the red poinsettias

and pulled all the old bulbs out. Oh.

A lot of them had burned out over the years. Uh-huh.

so I individually tacked new lights back into them

to make them shine really bright.

Wow. Okay. That's impressive.

And then you worked on the wise men.

Adam: This year, I replaced them all with L.E.D.s,

just to make it a little brighter.

And they're certainly not perfect,

but they are well loved, and it seems like every year

they get taped and wired back together.

Right. Well, it's a beautiful piece.

I even love seeing it right in front of this tree

as a backdrop. It looks great.

Carter: We got to talk about these deer, guys.

[ Laughs ] I don't know that I've ever seen

deer like this before.

They're beautiful.

Adam: These are our prismatic deer.

They kind of change colors as you walk around them.

And we just loved them, so had to have them.

Jo, when you see this,

is this kind of something you guys wish you had?

Oh, I would have loved to have had this back in the day.

Jim, what do you think about these deer?

Jim: Oh, I like them. Yeah?

But I'm old-fashioned, you know?

This whole thing started back in the '60s with my father...

Yeah. ...and then graduated to us, to Jo and I.

Wow. And now look what we have.

All these fancy ones. And now we're on to the new,

like, space-age deer, right?

Jessica: That's right. Completely different.

What's up with the moon up there?

That is a very special moon and one of my favorites

because Adam made it himself. Wow.

Adam: It's got five coats of glow-in-the-dark paint on it.

Does it really? It does.

And then it's kind of special 'cause when the lights go out

at the end of the night... Yeah.

...it's still glowing.

That's super cool. It's a beautiful piece.

So you have so many wireframes throughout.

What I love what you guys have done --

the pads on the bottom,

Yeah. I feel like that was -- that's really smart.

That's something I got from Jo.

We get some pretty strong winds

and weather through here being in Colorado. Yeah.

And we needed a way to put them on the driveway

without worrying about them blowing over. Right.

But it's nice. If it snows, then it all kind of blends in. Blends in?

Yeah. So, like, these angels --

Jo, are these from you guys? Jo: Mm-hmm.

These are some of our originals.

Jim: And the church. Jessica: Yes, the church.

Wow. A lot of love has gone into that.

Third set of lights on this church.

Really? Jo: They've been welded and rewelded

and then they've been zip-tied. Yeah.

When people ask me how I do it,

I say, "Zip ties and coffee."

[ Laughter ]

I love it.

One of the things I noticed right away

were these gorgeous red lights

that strand all the way around the house,

just, like, framing it perfectly.

They started with the aunt and uncle. Jim: I made them.

You did? Jo: He built him.

I made the boards and cut all the holes

and did the electrical.

Well, it looks great.

I love the fact that you were able to pass that down.

Jessica: And that's my favorite part, is just having something

that they worked so hard to make themselves... Right.

...and then being able to carry that on over here

and just build on that, so it's really special for us. For sure.

Carter: It's so unique to see a display

that's been used, different generations at different houses,

and now it's here 40, 50 years later.

Newer pieces, older pieces,

and they're all melding together,

and they work perfectly.

That was so much fun.

I enjoyed that so much.

I think what you really nailed is just how it wraps.

You feel like you're almost engulfed in your display.

And, of course, there's a lot of elements from you guys.

How does that feel to see your creation still living on?

I love it. I'm glad that they're doing it.

I'm so proud of them.

Just looking at all the effort

that everyone in our family has put into this,

I just feel so happy that

people get to drive by and enjoy all of this.

It's pretty impressive, right? Yeah.

You know, there's a great classic movie

called "Miracle on 34th Street."

And it just so happens that we live on 34th Lane.

And so, obviously,

let's name this display Miracle on 34th Lane.

So this wooden stick helps me to measure out each strand.

One thing that really sets us apart as a display

is we are very particular.

We want to be precise.

Every six inches.

It's not just thrown out there.

Everything has rhyme. Everything has purpose.

These ones go in a wave this one direction.

Oh, got to cover those plugs.

Jenny: Okay, most of it is DIY

and some recycled pieces.

I love DIY.

Can you guess what this is?

No idea. This is a planter.

That's so smart.

So these are pool noodles... Oh, yeah!

...that we recycled, and we just sliced them

and put them on ropes

so they look like a candy necklace.

When you say you slice them, how do you slice a pool noodle?

Those retractable razor blades. Yeah.

So you make it as long as you can.

And then it's just like chopping vegetables. Oh, really?

It's so unique because it adds color and texture.

This here is actually caulking.

And we put it in a piping bag.

Oh. That is so smart.

Let's talk about the perimeter here.

James: We have our rope light to try to keep people

from entering into the display... Right.

...so that way it can stay nice and fresh and everything.

Our candy canes are really just... Oh, my gosh.

...tree stakes, where we took a pool noodle,

and then you put a little topper on it, and that's it.

Oh, my gosh. That's super smart.

I love these older pieces.

You have the carousel over here.

These are actually from, like, the '90s.

Some might even call them vintage.

The '90s is vintage?! What happened?

I don't know. I mean -- Come on.

We don't want to believe it yet. I love the '90s.

This is an awesome area with the bubbles.

This is so much fun!

So this is our drive-in movie theater.

Ooh! I love a drive-in movie theater.

What movies do you play?

We do a great movie mashup of all the holiday classics.

Kids will just sit out here and just watch it for hours.

Yeah, but you guys use this garage

when it's not Christmas, right?

James: Completely transform it.

All this is actually landscape fabric

that we cover the walls with. Oh, that's smart.

And, you know, that's when Santa moves his car in

with all of his presents. That's perfect.

And so, Santa -- he's got to bring his car here to 34th Lane

because we are the Miracle on 34th Lane.

Oh, so you guys actually live on 34th Lane?

Exactly. That's what it is?

Yes. You got a popcorn machine behind me, too?

Yes. Would you like to enjoy some?

Can we just turn a movie on and hang out?

This is so delicious right now.

Yay! What'd you do to this?

Carter: All right. Oh, Santa. He's in a window box.

James: Of course, with his milk and his cookies.

That's your house in there? Yeah.

We just used closet racks to hang this up.

That's just zip-tied. Oh!

So you put it behind there? Yeah.

Works perfect. It does.

What is on the other side of that?

My office. Oh, okay.

Talk to me about these lights, because first thing I noticed --

how meticulous you guys are with your lights. Jenny: Oh, yes.

I am very meticulous about my lights. Yeah.

Every single light is exactly 6 inches apart.

Wow. It's a lot of zip ties and a lot of detail.

And to show you, this is my 12-inch mark.

This is my 6-inch mark.

Oh, my gosh. I just want to make sure --

not that I don't trust you.

Oh, no! Let's see. Oh, yeah.

That's pretty good. Oh!

So far so good. Oh!

Yep, yep, you pass.

As the inspector, I'm sure the rest of it is perfect.

Congratulations. Let's keep going, okay?

Let's do it.

Carter: I love your mega tree.

James: That is 21 feet to the top. Wow.

It is actually two 10-foot galvanized metal poles,

2 feet into the ground in concrete with a sleeve... Wow.

...and then three steel guidelines.

Sometimes they get really high gusts of wind.

That thing does not budge.

Tell me about the snowflakes.

So the snowflakes are actually 40-inch snowflakes...

Wow. ...9 feet in the air.

It is a 2x4 and then a 5x5 base

that actually locks into the roof.

Then I have 12,000-pound ratchet straps so --

12,000?! Yes.

I don't even have 12,000 pound

ratchet straps at my house.

And I'm pushing around tractors and everything.

This is crazy. I love the snowflakes.

By going up, you just make your display that much bigger.

to put on a display like this.

They live on 34th Lane.

I'd say they definitely pulled off a Christmas miracle.

How fun was that? It was so great.

That was so cool, you guys.

So many DIY moments on that.

I think what I was so impressed by

is how meticulous you guys are.

And it really does bring us so much joy.

That's why we can't get these cheesy smiles off our faces.

MacGregor display was awesome.

You can tell that this family is super artistic.

But I've seen four phenomenal displays,

and only one family can be the champions

of the Great Christmas Light Fight,

get that trophy, and win the $50,000.

The Mach family from Ennis, Texas,

lassoed up a Texas-sized and Texas-themed display.

So all of these are actual cities in Texas.

Carter: It shined big and bright,

with creative sections for different cities

that beautifully showcase their Lone Star pride.

carried on a decorating tradition with a sentimental,

multi-generational holiday display.

traditional and contemporary pieces

in such a warm and fun way.

created a real-life Miracle on 34th Lane.

and see how you're able to create all this DIY --

these cutouts interjected with these pixels

that are framed around it so beautifully.

And for me, these were things that I had never seen before,

especially the way -- your word, colorization, right?

It's beautiful. I'm so proud of them.

They deserve it so much. Thank you.

It's definitely a family tradition, right?
