Fairbanks is home to me.

I grew up here and I love protecting this community.

In Fairbanks, there are bad parts of being a cop.

How much have you had to drink tonight?

- So my daughter actually heard a gunshot...

- And i was in there with the door shut

and the TV on and we know (beep)

and he's been like going downhill rapidly.

We know he's on drugs

and I heard him screaming over there.

So I like pause my TV and look up a window

and I was watching him

and he was yelling at someone and then he started...

I heard footsteps.

I looked out the window when he was still walking and then

he turned down that way and he started screaming real loud

and I heard, pop

just one shot.

- Did you see any guns or anything like that on him?

- [Blonde Woman] I see a gun on him all the time.

But did you see one tonight?

- [Woman] I didn't see one tonight, it was dark

- So I talked to the caller.

He walked this way,

She heard something that she thought was a gun,

but didn't see him holding a gun,

but he always has a gun.

- Okay.

- But they didn't see a gun in his hand at all tonight.

- Okay, it was laying in the truck.

- Correct.

So he wasn't actually in possession of it

when you contacted him.

- Correct.

When I talked him in and had him put his hands up,

I could tell there was nothing.

There was definitely not a rifle in his hand.

I can tell you that much.

- So it's potential that we have nothing.

- Yes.

Based on witnesses statements,

no one actually saw him fire a gun

or hold a gun tonight.

So he was detained for a little while

so we can do an investigation, but he's going to be let go.

And at the end of the day, nobody got hurt.

We can't, we don't have any signs of a shot being fired.

City 0-5, the male has been released.

It's one way to get your first call

So when nobody got hurt and he didn't do anything wrong.

This is week three.

Since being on my own after field training,

even after field training,

you're still being watched by a fellow officers,

which is a good thing, you know.

We have a weapons incident.

Someone pulled a gun on somebody,

appeared to be a revolver.

(Police siren wailing)

- I'm originally from California.

My background is pretty diverse.

I studied linguistics and Japanese in college.

I have like Chippewa Indian in me.

I'm half Mexican.

I came from a lower socioeconomic family.

So I know what it's like to struggle.

- He didn't inform us that he had a gun on him,

which is a crime in the state of Alaska.

Now we need to figure out if he's committed to any other

offenses or crimes.

being a new officer in Alaska.

- Posseses on his person or in a car in which the person's

present firearm while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

The gentleman was intoxicated and in possession of a firearm

and he failed to notify a peace officer

that he had a firearm on his person.

And so he was arrested today for misconduct involving

weapons in the fourth and fifth degree.

Alaska is extremely different from California.

So with every case that I take,

you know I'm always learning something new.

That was pretty sweet, I out ran all those fools.

I've been working here for five years.

- Sitka, it's a quiet town.

There's not a whole lot of hustle.

The grind as you call it down in the lower 48.

We rely heavily on the season and the fishing season.

- Can I get a quick picture with it?

- It does bring some crime to Sitka,

more people, more medical calls,

fist fights and roommates not getting along with each other,

drunk driving and people who just are opportunists.

So you know, crime is going to happen.

But I love being a person that

could come and make the situation safe,

No matter what it is.

you said this vehicle was on Kelly-Anne Street,

heading towards town.

- And is our complaintant still following behind the vehicle.

- One of our community members witnesses person,

driving drunk and wants us to check it out.

Make sure that they're being safe.

and became an Alaska state trooper.

It was a really great adventure,

but I subscribed to community policing.

So when they offered me a job here

I gratefully accepted.

Now I'm living here and working here and living a dream.

Well the PBT indicated a breath sample of a 0.159.

- And what does that mean?

- Well, the legal limit in the state of Alaska is 0.08.

So it means you're above the legal limit

to drive a car safely.

under the influence of alcohol.

Policing in a small town.

You can take the good with the bad.

Not every person is going to be a fan of the police.

But as long as you treat them with dignity,

they'll understand you're doing your job.

- So what exactly is going on here?

- Well, I was driving down the road

and he said, "I have a gun

and I'm gonna shoot any cars that go by"

and he reached in his pocket and at that moment I drove off.

- So you didn't see him with a gun or anything like that?

- No, because he acted like he had one.

- Alrighty, hold on one sec.

- Okay.

- Come on, bro.

Somebody reported that you said that you had a gun.

- No, I said I was going to get a gun.

They tell us which way to go.

- We're actually very fortunate

that it played out the way that it did.

- I would like to debrief with you about this call later.

- Something that's really special about law enforcement

in Alaska is the standards for integrity are very high.

We hold each other accountable

for the mistakes that we make.

Because if you make a mistake in this job

that mistake could potentially cost you your life

or somebody else's life.

All we can do is just move forward.

who is apparently creating some sort of a disturbance

this is such a small town.

We pretty much all know each other.

We have a long history with Ricky.

a person who the Sitika police

has spent a lot of time working with and, and helping

and dealing with

when he's doing stuff against the law.

A lot of people think law enforcement

you're out there arresting people and whatnot.

And in reality, a lot of what we do is

figuring out creative solutions

to what people are going through

you are programmed to be a problem solver,

especially here in Alaska.

to certain problems that you're confronted with.

So you have to come

up with different ideas and different approaches.

It's good to have a good rapport with Ricky.

I didn't have it in my heart to say no.

I responded to a report of a hit and run

about 10 days ago,

- [Dispatcher] 911.

- [Dispatcher] Okay-

- There is a homeless transient that was struck

by a truck at a marijuana store.

And then the truck fled the scene.

- He's still recovering, but we haven't found the guy yet.

- I just got the video today.

So there's our guy right there, right?

(laughing)

- Boom.

- Damn.

in an attempt to identify the individual.

One of my goals in law enforcement is to

help those people that can't help themselves.

I've been a victim of crime.

I've been robbed at gunpoint.

So it definitely irritates me.

when you got some jerk just running around out there.

I've been hearing a few things over the weekend

and I just want to get in contact with you.

- So the suspect in the hit and run case has been identified

- So the issue is,

the crime is not that he hit him.

Cause accidents happen instead he left.

So here's the deal.

You are one of many suspects

in a possible hit and run case.

So that's you correct?

So there's our guy right there.

And then when you backed up,

- Yes that's my truck sliding.

And then now he's on the floor.

So to be honest with you man

it's very evident that your vehicle hit him.

- Okay.

- Do you believe you might've hit him by accident

and not have noticed it?

- When I turned round and saw the gentleman

on the ground and rolled down my window.

And I was like, if you okay

we could take you to the hospital.

- What made you think

that you wanted to take him to the hospital?

- I offered because he was on the ground.

That's why I stopped to make sure he was okay.

- And then you guys just left? - We left.

He knows, he knows, he knows.

He did not outright confess to committing the crime

of the hit and run.

However, he did provide a lot of incriminating statements

that suggest otherwise.

- I'm pretty, I'm pretty stoked on it.

(wind whistling)

- I need you to carry these N 95 masks into the station.

COVID-19 hasn't made its way up to Alaska.

- COVID-19, it is the biggest pandemic threat in decades.

It has infected over

a hundred thousand people worldwide.

And as a law enforcement officer.

You may be the next to deal with it.

Fever, cough, difficulty breathing.

- Stomach pains, there's headaches, confusion.

- Do you know we've got four out of the half

who have some kind of symptoms of something.

So I don't know if they have it or not.

- We're the police,

we might work up right at the time we're sick.

That's just the way it is.

- It is something I never thought I would see in my life.

You go to the store and there's (beep) nothing

in certain aisles because people have gone

doomsday prepper.

- Well, it looks like they sending us to the hospital.

- To the hospital we go, where the Corona Virus

who knows?

Yeah, when we did our routine check of our records

it showed that he had a felony warrant, which right now

even with the COVID-19 going on

a felony warrant you'd still be arrested and held at jail.

Why'd you come to the hospital?

Are you feeling like you're sick or something?

Are you, why are you at the hospital?

Are you having signs of being sick?

All right, well, we're gonna have to.

So I'll hold them on this one no matter what,

no matter if there's a virus COVID-19 or what going on

I still got to arrest people when they have felony warrants

or committed those kinds of crimes.

the way I handle people has changed.

I'm either going through a lot more wipes

going through a lot of plastic gloves.

COVID-19 has greatly changed how I do things.

in town now that has COVID-19?

- Yeah.

- Oh, I just found out too.

- So today's the first confirmed case here in Sitka.

This is a huge tourist town and it's also

a commercial fishing town.

So you have two of our primary industries

that are hit heavily

and it's been devastating for my brother and his family.

- Normally we'd have already fished 40 to 50 days

on the river and I've only got it I think four days so far.

- This time of year is usually a busier part of the year.

You know this place right here

You'd have cruise ship right behind me here.

And then the whole town would be full of

well over a thousand people and there's nobody.

I can't help but to imagine the amount of stress

that this is now going to bring on families who live here.
