I grew up here and I love

In Fairbanks, there are
bad parts of being a cop.

So I like pause my TV
and look up a window

and I was watching him

and he was yelling at someone
and then he started...

I heard footsteps.

I looked out the window when
he was still walking and then

he turned down that way and
he started screaming real loud

and I heard, pop

just one shot.

- Did you see any guns or
anything like that on him?

- [Blonde Woman] I see a
gun on him all the time.

But did you see one tonight?

- [Woman] I didn't see one
tonight, it was dark

- So I talked to the caller.

He walked this way,

She heard something that
she thought was a gun,

but didn't see
him holding a gun,

but he always has a gun.

- Okay.

- But they didn't see a gun
in his hand at all tonight.

- Okay, it was
laying in the truck.

- Correct.

So he wasn't actually in
possession of it

when you contacted him.

- Correct.

When I talked him in and
had him put his hands up,

I could tell there was nothing.

There was definitely
not a rifle in his hand.

I can tell you that much.

- So it's potential
that we have nothing.

- Yes.

Based on witnesses statements,

no one actually
saw him fire a gun

or hold a gun tonight.

So he was detained
for a little while

so we can do an investigation,
but he's going to be let go.

And at the end of the
day, nobody got hurt.

We can't, we don't have any
signs of a shot being fired.

has been released.

Since being on my own
after field training,

even after field training,

you're still being watched
by a fellow officers,

which is a good thing, you know.

We have a weapons incident.

Someone pulled a
gun on somebody,

appeared to be a revolver.

- I'm originally
from California.

My background is pretty diverse.

I studied linguistics
and Japanese in college.

I have like Chippewa
Indian in me.

I'm half Mexican.

I came from a lower
socioeconomic family.

So I know what it's
like to struggle.

The gentleman was intoxicated
and in possession of a firearm

and he failed to
notify a peace officer

that he had a firearm
on his person.

And so he was arrested today
for misconduct involving

weapons in the fourth
and fifth degree.

I've been working
here for five years.

There's not a whole
lot of hustle.

The grind as you call
it down in the lower 48.

We rely heavily on the season
and the fishing season.

- Can I get a quick

- It does bring
some crime to Sitka,

more people, more medical calls,

fist fights and roommates not
getting along with each other,

drunk driving and people
who just are opportunists.

So you know, crime
is going to happen.

But I love being a person that

could come and make
the situation safe,

No matter what it is.

was on Kelly-Anne Street,

heading towards town.

state trooper.

It was a really great adventure,

but I subscribed to
community policing.

following the line.

Now I'm living here and working
here and living a dream.

Not every person is going

and he reached in his pocket
and at that moment I drove off.

acted like he had one.

Somebody reported that you

- We're actually very fortunate

that it played out
the way that it did.

in Alaska is the standards
for integrity are very high.

We hold each other accountable

for the mistakes that we make.

up with different ideas

report of a hit and run

about 10 days ago,

transient that was struck

by a truck at a marijuana store.

And then the truck
fled the scene.

- He's still recovering, but
we haven't found the guy yet.

- I just got the video today.

So there's our guy
right there, right?

identify the individual.

One of my goals in
law enforcement is to

help those people that
can't help themselves.

I've been a victim of crime.

I've been robbed at gunpoint.

running around out there.

he was on the ground.

That's why I stopped to
make sure he was okay.

- And then you guys just left?
- We left.

He knows, he knows, he knows.

He did not outright confess
to committing the crime

of the hit and run.

However, he did provide a lot
of incriminating statements

that suggest otherwise.

stoked on it.

This is my brother Ted.

He brings people out fishing,
he's a charter guide.

- Hey did you hear
there's somebody

in town now that has COVID-19?

- Yeah.

- Oh, I just found out too.

- So today's the first
confirmed case here in Sitka.

This is a huge tourist
town and it's also

a commercial fishing town.

So you have two of
our primary industries

that are hit heavily

and it's been devastating for
my brother and his family.

- Normally we'd have
already fished 40 to 50 days

on the river and I've only got
it I think four days so far.

- This time of year is usually
a busier part of the year.

You know this place right here

You'd have cruise ship
right behind me here.

And then the whole
town would be full of

well over a thousand
people and there's nobody.

I can't help but to imagine
the amount of stress

that this is now going to bring
on families who live here.

(cars honking)

we have COVID going on.

And so the Sitka schools
planned and prepared

a rolling parade to
celebrate the accomplishments

of the graduates.

Yeah there's a lot
of folks that are

going through hard times now

but the people at Sitka they're
smart, talented, and strong.
