Welcome to CrimeFeed.

First, a case that just
won't go away

and day by day,
becomes even more twisted.

Once a multimillionaire,

heir to a legal dynasty,

South Carolina lawyer,
Alex Murdaugh,

guilty in the court of law.

The brutal murders of wife,
Maggie and son, Paul.

At least, for now anyway.

Then, he admits to stealing
his clients' money

to the tune of millions.

All that power,

all that prestige,

all that money,

now demanding his case
be thrown out

and it just might happen.

Mara, what's the latest?

Nancy, Alex's defense team

accused the court clerk

of Colleton County,
Rebecca Hill,

of jury tampering
in this murder trial.

In a motion,
his attorneys claim

Hill had frequent
private conversations

with the jury foreperson

and that she pressure
the jurors to reach
a quick verdict.

They've requested
an evidentiary hearing.

[Derrick] That's right,
it's gonna be interesting to
see how this shapes out.

Rebecca's son, Jeff,

who worked as an IT director
for the county

was arrested and charged with
wiretapping.

We don't know
what conversation
he allegedly intercepted

or what that means
for the case,

but he isn't due back in court

until late January.

Regardless,
Murdaugh's plea deal
for the financial crimes

requires that he serve
at least

85% of his sentence.

So, if for any reason

he does get a retrial
for those murders,

or doesn't get convicted
again,

he could walk out of prison
in his late 70s.

I personally just don't see
that happening.

Yeah, well he was
just sentenced

for those financial crimes
a few weeks ago,

and at his sentencing,

his victims let him have it.

This is how
one of the family's attorneys,

Eric Bland, put his actions
into perspective.

This was predatory behavior.

This wasn't Enron.

It wasn't WorldCom.

This was Alex Murdaugh

stealing money from those
that were closest to him.

Gloria Satterfield,
who broke bread with him

and his family for 22 years

helped raise his kids,

Jordan Jinks, lifelong friend,

since they were 8 years old,

grew up play ball together.

This is close theft.

You know, it's amazing to me

that this guy

stands up again. Again.

And I saw him on the stand,

I watched every word
of his testimony.

Lying through his teeth

whenever it would suit him,

break down and start crying,
whining.

On and on, he just did
the same thing.

This guy doesn't care
about any of those victims

and I will do a backflip
if he gets a new trial.

Well, you have to remember,

a lot of his cases

were personal injury cases.

So, he was taking them on

when people were at
their most vulnerable.

And one of the victims here
that he was just sentenced for

is a woman
who hired him twice.

Once when her son
was paralyzed

after a terrible accident
and then again,

after her son died.

These are the kinds
of people that he
was stealing from.

And the 22 counts
that he's been sentenced on,

those were just the cases
that prosecutors picked.

They could've chosen
from hundreds of cases.

You know, the guy
that was paralyzed,

I learn this in court.

In one of his ads,

you know, a TV ad
for his law firm or

some ad he had,
he actually used

video or shots
of the paralyzed victim.

And then, ended up stealing
from him, I mean,

how much lower
can you go

than to prey
on your own victim.

Your own client
whose paralyzed

well, I guess you know
the answer to that.

Shooting your wife
and son dead.

Yeah and the state has already
responded to this.

Basically saying, listen

either dismiss
what Murdaugh's attorneys
are asking.

Or let's hold
an evidentiary hearing

and we'll prove
that it wasn't credible.

In fact, they go on
to state that

the statements that they have
from this one juror
who they're questioning

was removed for dishonesty
of concealing

her own
improper communications
about the case,

and two hearsay
affidavits from

Murdaugh's own paralegal.

Hey guys, I gotta tell you
something.

Uh, sat through the trial,

and I, you know struck up

a friendship with Becky Hill,
the court clerk.

She was so polite,
so, um, how do you say,

official, businesslike.

i just find it really hard
to believe

that she tried to tamper
with the jury.

Now, she made
some offhand comment like,

"Hey guys, it's gonna be
a quick verdict, right?
Wink, wink."

I just don't think that
that would

you know, impinge on
their duties as jurors.

[Mara] I have a question
for you, Nancy,

because one of the things
she's accused of

is saying to the jury,

"Make sure you watch
Murdaugh's body language
when he testifies."

But is that in it of itself
prejudicial?

I mean,
80% of our communication
is nonverbal, right?

So, saying to someone
watch their body language,

they could show
that they're being earnest.

Well, that's all they said
even though,
she shouldn't be saying

And even though
it may not change the case,
she shouldn't be saying it.

Derrick, I use to tell lawyers

when I would work with them,

if you see a juror,
you can say one thing,

yes, no,
and there's the bathroom.

That's it. Don't say
anything else to a juror.

That's not her place
to be instructing on

what to observe,
what not to observe
and what to...

I just...

I just don't believe
she did it but hey,

we'll find out.

And Murdaugh is just the tip
of the 2023 iceberg
in this business

very often truth
is stranger than fiction.

The bizarre plot,
the schemes,

the cold-blooded crimes,

they never end.

And 2023 proves it.

Of course, we've gotta mention
Kouri Richins.

The all American family,

picture perfect young couple
raising three beautiful boys.

But behind that facade,
secrets, deception,

a deadly love of money

ending with daddy dead,

and mommy accused of
cold-blooded murder

by poison. Mara.

In March of 2022,

33 year old, Kouri Richins
reports

finding her husband,
39 year old, Eric Richins

dead in her bedroom.

It was later determined
that he died from
a lethal dose of fentanyl.

Kouri Richins, then wrote
a children's book

to help their boys cope
with the loss of their father.

But a year after Eric's death,

Kouri is arrested
for his murder.

Let's listen to her
promoting the book

just one month
before her arrest.

So, my husband passed away
unexpectedly last year.

So, it's March 4th

was one year anniversary
for us.

And um, he was 39.
It completely

took us all by shock, um

and we have three little boys,
10, nine and six.

And um, you know,
we kind of,

my kids and I kind of
wrote this book

on the different emotions and

grieving processes
that we've experienced
last year.

And, hoping that it can
kind of help other kids,

you know, deal with this
and kind of

you know, find happiness
some way or another.

Yeah and Nancy, police say
Kouri spiked her husband's
Moscow Mule

with fentanyl
on the night he died.

And investigation revealed,
she purchased

four life insurance policies
for Eric.

-Totaling two million dollars,
-[Nancy whistles]

and took out
a quarter of a million loan

using Eric's name
without his knowledge.

I love something
you just said, Mara.

Of course, I love everything
you say, Derrick.

Like Mara, you said,

Wait, no, no, she said,
he died unexpectedly.

Yeah, he didn't expect it.

But I think she kind of
expected it
according to police.

It wasn't her first time
trying.

One of the most
compelling parts of this story

is that prosecutors say
that her motive was money.

She thought she was
going to inherit money
from Eric

if he died, but she wouldn't
get anything in the divorce

because of their prenup.

But, unbeknownst to her,

he had changed his will

so that she was no longer
the beneficiary.

He put everything in a trust

because he did not
trust her.

She did not learn that
until after he died.

Then, she found out
that her whole plan
was for nothing.

You know what caps it off
for me, Derrick?

That right after he dies,

he did not want her
to buy this

multimillion dollar mansion
and flip it

as a realtor.

She did it anyway.

And within a couple of days,

after his memorial service,

she had a big party.

Boozing it up with all of her
realtor friends,

celebrating flipping
that house.

And I gotta tell you,
you know,

after my fiance was murdered,

I couldn't even think straight

much less throw a party
with my friends.

That did it for me.

I don't care what any
defense attorney says.

You don't throw a party
right after your husband dies.

No, can't disagree.

And the father
of their three children,
you should know.

You see
your children suffering.

Suffering.

And even, all those

beautiful wide open spaces
have plenty of crime.

Seven bodies turn up
in Oklahoma.

A case a man behind bars
for rape,

and you know it,
he's released early.

Then commits mass murder.

I hate this guy. Why Mara?

[Mara] Yeah, this is
a terrible story.

In May of 2023,

police searching
for two missing teen girls

in rural Oklahoma

find seven bodies

on the property of convicted
sex offender, Jesse McFadden,

including his own body.

The 39 year old
was sent to prison

on a rape conviction
back in 2003,

but he was given
an early release

for good behavior.

But on May 1st, McFadden shot
his wife, her three children,

and two teen girls
who were friends

visiting the family,
killing all of them.

He then turned the gun
on himself,

and he was due in court
that very same day

the bodies were found

for new
child pornography charges.

Hmm. And you know,
I found out that

two of the victims
that were found dead

two of the teen girls,
had been sexually molested
as well.

Now here's another case

I cannot get out of my head.

Taylor Schabusiness.

It was a trial,

a mom spots a bucket
in her basement

only to make
a gruesome discovery.

Her adult son's head.

Evidence leads to the son,
Shad Tyrion's

sadistic girlfriend,
Taylor Schabusiness.

Derrick, I mean,
you got me at

a severed head and a bucket
but go ahead, what happened?

Yeah Nancy, this is victim
25 year old, Shad Tyrion,

and after his mother found
his severed head,
she tells police

he was last seen
with his girlfriend

25 year old,
Taylor Schabusiness.

Now, when detectives pull up
to Taylor's house,

they followed
bloody footprints
up to the door,

which Taylor answers,

and she's quite literally
covered in blood.

Listen to what she said during
the police investigation.

And Nancy, police also found
Shad's body parts

in Taylor's car
in a box.

In the September of 2023,
Taylor was given

a life sentence
for strangling Shad

and dismembering his body.

[Mara]
She got a life sentence

but the jury rejected

her mental insanity plea.

And I have to tell you,
I'm shocked

that they rejected that
because

not just of what we heard
in this tape

but here's some of the other
things that she said
to the police.

And this is graphic,
she says

of the murder,

she cuddled the corpse
after she removed his head.

Later, she attacked
her defense attorney in court

and had to be tackled
in court.

She threw a chair

at the psychologist
who was responsible

for evaluating
her mental fitness.

And she was forced to wear
a spit hood at her sentencing

so that she would not spit
on anyone.

I think the jury probably
didn't want her

to get off easy by going to
a mental institution

as opposed to prison.

I don't see how anybody
can think this woman...

[Nancy]
What about meth?
Methamphetamine.

Nancy, if meth did that to you
we would see this
all the time.

A lot of people
in this country use meth
and don't do that.

[Nancy] Voluntary use of drugs
or alcohol is not

a defense and I promise you,
Mara.

Not that I want this to happen

but if your head

does turn up in a bucket,

I will not let the perp
get off

on a methamphetamine defense.

I was crazy

so, I didn't know
what I was doing.

I will make sure
that there's life sentence
or death penalty.

Because claiming
that she was high on meth

does not insanity make.

I don't think
that Taylor Schabusiness
was insane

because she was high
on meth.

I think she's insane because
she is insane.

And that is part of what
the psychologist found.

They said that this woman
is psychotic.

She thought she had an affair
with Jeffrey Dahmer

a year before the murder.

As we know, Jeffrey Dahmer's
been dead for quite some time.

This woman belongs
in a hospital.

Would you want another inmate

to be in same cell
with this woman?

Whose crime is that bad that
that should be
their punishment.

Well, I have to agree
with that however,

I don't want any
loophole

where she can get out

and attack
another innocent person,

and more.

We may never know

how many women

suspected Long Island
serial killer, Rex Heuermann

may have murdered

But more eye witnesses
continue to come forward.

And oh, how the mighty fall

and they thought
they'd get away with it.

Wealthy, famous men

square off with lady justice
over shocking assault charges.

Next, a serial killer
stalks defenseless women

for decades.

Has it finally come to an end?

Rex Heuermann,
Long Island serial killer

suspected three of the
Gilgo Beach murders.

Investigators working overtime

to tie Heuermann
to eight more murders

that we know of,
although,

many legal eagles,
including myself

are convinced there may be
many, many more.

Mara, what's the latest?

Well, Nancy,
we're still pouring over

the new eye witness testimony
in this case.

Since Heuermann's arrest,

new witnesses
have stepped forward
tying him

to two more murdered women.

Shannan Gilbert
and Karen Vergata.

Meanwhile, there's been
a lot of speculations
over how much

Heuermann's wife, Asa Ellerup,
about these murders.

Now, she hasn't been charged
with anything

and after his arrest,
she filed for divorce.

But a lot of new details
have been coming out.

Heuermann recently signed over

ownership of their house
to Ellerup.

And she's now visited him
both in jail,

and more recently,
at his latest court hearing.

There's a lot going on
with Asa Ellerup

because she is also now
signed a deal

with a production company.

I couldn't wait for you
to say that,
I was holding back.

-[Mara] One million dollar
-Million dollar.

deal to do a documentary

to participate
in a documentary,

she was recently spotted
at a court hearing

with a camera crew in tow.

She pulled up
in a silver Mercedes.

[Mara] And looking a lot more
put together.

You know, when we saw her
initially,

she was incredibly disheveled,
distraught.

You know, the law enforcement
tore their house up.

She said they were sleeping
and grilling outside

because they couldn't even
live in their home.

When we've seen her recently,

she's looked
a lot more polished
and pulled together.

And listen, optically,
it doesn't look good.

I think we can all agree
on that.

But what I'm more
concerned about

is the fact that recently,
we just had a new development

where the cheek swabs
taken from her

do match the DNA
on one of the victims.

My question, and maybe
you have the answer, Nancy is,

is this the same DNA,
the hair fiber that was found
on the initial victim?

Or is this a new location
at a different victim?

Because if that's the case,

it's a real problem.

[Nancy]
They haven't made it clear

what DNA
they're talking about.

I know one of her hairs
was found

on one of the victims.

But if there's more

of her DNA
on these victims,

she's got a problem.

And another thing,

we keep talking about
how bad it looked

that they didn't have
a place to live.

And yeah, I agree.

But that's not
the police's fault.

That's his fault for stalking,
torturing,

humiliating, degrading,
and murdering women.

Obviously, bringing them
to the house

when his wife
was at their, we think.

That's his fault,
it's not the police's fault.

If they didn't tear
the house apart

then, everybody would be mad

the police didn't do
their job.

I mean, is that right?
Can I get a amen on this?

[Mara]
Yeah, if the home appears
to have been a crime scene,

police certainly believed
that there was activity

tied to the murder
that took place there, so,

they gotta do
what they gotta do

to solve these murders.

They owe it to the victims,
they owe it to
the victims' families.

In terms of Asa Ellerup,
the wife,

I have to wonder
if this documentary deal

doesn't potentially open up
some legal problems for her.

Ooh, you are so right.

No marital privilege.

Everything that she says
on camera

is gonna be recorded
and could potentially be used
against her

in court and as you know,

she's throwing away
her spousal privilege.

Let's not forget, we talked
about this in
a previous episode

the Karen Vergata affidavit,

where allegedly,

Karen Vergata was brought
to the Heuermann's home.

The witnesses left
Karen Vergata behind...

[Nancy] Say the rest.

For swinging, swinging.
They were changing partners,
Derrick.

[Derrick] The witnesses leave,

Karen Vergata allegedly

with Asa and Rex Heuermann

and allegedly they saw

Karen Vergata running
for the garage
while they're inside.

-That to me...
-[Nancy] Naked.

Can I just tell you?

Number one rule

I lay down when I got married
to my husband.

Open marriage, open casket.

Now, if you can't agree
to that,

we're not getting married.

If she knew about all of this,

and stood by and did nothing,

of course, guilty knowledge
is not a criminal make.

There's gotta be more
than just knowledge.

But if she covered,
if she cleaned up,

if she arranged any of it,
she got a problem y'all.

Guys, 2023 was no exception
to crime.

Once again, the rich,
the powerful, the arrogant,

famous men who seemingly
have it all

allegedly committing
heinous acts of violence.

Why?

And another name to add
to the list, and may claim

his bad boy image
was not just an image.

It's real, and he got away
with it for years.

Bombshell trials including

a loving mom who plots
to kill her own children

and her lover's ex-wife
in an elaborate plan

because she claimed
they were zombies.

Why do headlines always say

famous men behaving badly?

That's certainly
putting perfume on the pig.

Can I just start with
R. Kelly?

Welcome back to CrimeFeed,
I'm gonna thank you
for being with us.

Money, power, fame.

Instead of making these guys
happy,

they use it all to prey
on their victims.

But in 2023, a big year
for boy back.

First up, R. Kelly.

February, R&B superstar,
Robert Sylvester Kelly,

already behind bars,

from running a sex trafficking
ring for his own fetishes,

get 20 years for a string
of child sex crimes.

But then, multiple videos
have emerged

reportedly of the music icon

sex abusing his 14 year old
little goddaughter.

You know, I hate to even look
at him.

Don't even look at me
even in the camera, R. Kelly.

You make me sick.

All that money,
all that power,

all that privilege,
he had it all.

But he couldn't be happy.

And these allegations
have followed him for decades,

and this case, actually
a lot of people
would remember.

This is the same victim
from the 2008 case

where he was acquitted.

Same videos, difference is

in 2008,
she didn't wanna testify

and she denied she was the one
on the video.

So, they couldn't prove who
the identity of the girl,

they couldn't prove her age.

This time, grown woman,
much stronger,

she agreed to testify,
that was the key.

Her strength and her testimony
put him behind bars.

You know, I'm glad you pointed
that out, Mara, because

I've dealt with a lot of
child rape victims,

molestation victims.

And if they don't have
somebody standing up
for them,

they can't do it
on their own.

I mean, look what
she lived through
all these years.

And finally,
she has the strength

to come forward and go,
"Yeah, that was me."

[both] Hmm.

Celebrity men seemingly
get away with
all sorts of crimes.

But not this time.

Danny Masterson,

a star of That '70s show,

hid behind a seemingly
loving marriage,

and his church.

Now convicted of not one,
but two rapes

in the case that
put his church, Scientology,

in the spotlight, Mara.

That's right, Nancy. Masterson
and his victims were members
of the church.

But as a celebrity,
he enjoyed special status.

The women testified that
they reported their assaults

to church leadership,

but they were pressured
not to go to the police.

Instead, they say they were
subjected to "Ethics training"

and even, reportedly stalked.

Yeah and we see this a lot,
not only in Scientology,

but we've also seen it
in the Catholic church
where there's

obviously the stigma
around it, they try to keep it
in house

because they know how
it could affect the religion.

Obviously, it's not
the right move.

But it does happen more often
than I care to hear about it.

What we've seen recently
with a lot of these old cases
being refiled

because of things like,
the New York Survivors Act,

where they've lifted
some of
the statutes limitations.

Often, it takes awhile
for people to feel empowered

to face powerful institutions.

-[Derrick] You have to escape
the church first.
-Yes.

Okay, and the whole thing
about hiding behind
the marriage,

and the church of Scientology.

Didn't it come out
after the trial?

They haven't been
a married couple living
together for years.

That whole thing was faked

to try to present a facade
of a happy marriage.

To help him at trial.
It was all BS.

Technical legal term.
I mean,

you know what people go to,

the lengths they go to,
to trick a jury.

Well, no list of A-list stars
accused of

committing evil acts
is complete without this guy.

Movie star, comedian, host.

Former husband of
music sensation,

Katy Perry. I love her.

Well, I'm talking about
Russell Brand.

At least five women
come forward

accusing Brand of rape.

And sex and emotional abuse.

Take a listen to our friends

and one of Brand's accusers.

I was set up in a bed
against the headboard,

and, he, um...

Forced his [bleep]
down my throat.

And I couldn't breathe,
he was just choking me.

I couldn't breathe.

I was pushing him away
and pushing him away and,

he wasn't backing off
at all.

And I was crying

and he said, "Aww, I only want
to see your mascara run
anyway."

I mean, really.
All that power,

all that wealth,
the huge reach

he has as a comedian,

a beloved comedian,
I might add.

I mean, it just goes to show

the duplicity
in the human soul.

Yeah, well, Nancy,
Brand's bad boy behavior
over the years

actually helped catapult him
to fame.

But there have been

many of these sinister
open secrets on
sets apparently

and in studios from London
to Los Angeles

that are finally catching up
to him.

But that's not how
he's framing it.

As I've written about
extensively in my book,

I was very promiscuous.

The relationships that I had
were always consensual.

And to see that transparency

metastasized into
something criminal

that I absolutely deny

makes me question,

is there another agenda
at play?

Yeah, now one woman
is suing Russell Brand

for emotional distress
for allegedly exposing himself

to her on a movie set
in 2010.

This is something this guy
has joked about on air before.

So, it appears his antics
and his style of comedy

have not aged well.

They live a life of power,
wealth, adoration,

but then, these guys
blow it all
committing serious crimes?

What about all the allegations
coming out

just before the New York Adult
Survivors Act

is set to expire?

Lawsuits fired
at Sean "Diddy" Combs,

actor, Jamie Foxx,

Guns N' Roses singer,
Axl Rose,

New York City mayor,
Eric Adams,

new claims against
former New York governor,
Andrew Cuomo,

and so many others.

All alleging sex assault.

Right Nancy,
and all of those men
are denying any wrongdoing.

In fact, P. Diddy has since
settled one of the cases
against him

and no charges
have been filed against

any of the other men
but we'll have to see
how that plays out over time.

You know, this one,
I'll never get over.

Imagine a mom accused of

killing not only two
of her own children,

but also plotting to kill
her brand new
husband's ex-wife.

And a teen girl intentionally
crashes her car

to a wall, to kill
her boyfriend and his friend.

The most shocking trials
of 2023 next.

And later,

How much did accused killer,
Bryan Kohberger know

about the University of Idaho
victims?

Trials that grip the nation.

First, cult mom Lori Vallow

murders two
of her own children

and that's not all,
accused of plotting to kill
her new husband's ex-wife

in her sleep.

The trial, bizarre.

Cult mom claiming
she was chosen by heaven

that she's a goddess,
actually,

to usher in the apocalypse.

But how does murdering
her own children

and the ex-wife of husband
number four

have anything to do with
a gateway to heaven, Mara?

[Mara]
Well, in September of 2019,

Lori's two children,

7 year old, JJ Vallow, and
16 year old, Tylee Ryan

went missing
in Rexburg, Idaho.

Lori never even reported
her children missing,

and instead, she went on
a vacation

with her new husband,
Chad Daybell.

Nine months later,
investigators found

the children's remains
in Chad's backyard.

[Derrick]
Yeah, and as an investigator,
this case

really bothers me especially

when you listen to what Lori
had to say at court.

Take a listen to this.

Jesus Christ knows

that no one was murdered
in this case.

Accidental deaths happen,

suicides happen,

fatal side effects
from medications happen.

The first time JJ visited me

after he passed away,

he put his arm around me

and he said to me,

"You didn't do anything wrong,
Mom.

I love you.

And I know you loved me

every minute of my life."

Unbelievable. Now,
Lori was sentenced
to life in prison

in July and her husband,
Chad Daybell's trial

is set to begin
in April of 2024
on the same charges.

You know, what's amazing

is that somehow, she dragged
Christ into her defense

and then claims the little boy

that she murdered,

or she had her brother

and Daybell, the new husband,
murder.

That he forgave her.
In other words,

my son that's dead forgave me.

My little seven year old boy.

So, judge, you should go
easy on me too.

That took a lot of nerve.

Well, she reportedly
was obsessed

with this idea
of the apocalypse

and she believed that
her children were zombies.

And they were possessed
and part of the reason
she believed that

is because Chad Daybell
told her that.

Early in their relationship,
she had consulted him

about the quality
of her children's spirits

and he basically said,
they're dark spirits

and there's no saving them.

They've gone so far
to the other side,

they can never come back
from that.

So, prosecutors believed that
that was the motivation

that she had these misguided
spiritual beliefs that she...

-You know what, Mara.
Let me ask you a question.
-Yes.

Do you think it was something
to do with
the zombie apocalypse

that made her go
on Amazon

before Tammy Daybell

"died in her sleep?"

her new husband, wife,

before Tammy died?

She must have been
clairvoyant, right?

what you're speaking to

is a very interesting timeline
of two other deaths

connected to this couple
which is,

both of their exes.

So, I just wanted to read
the timeline

-because
it's really fascinating.
-I love the timeline.

July of 2019,

Lori's estranged husband,
her fourth husband,
by the way,

is shot and killed
by her own brother.

September,
the kids go missing.

Although, she does not
report them missing.

So, the world doesn't know
they're missing
for quite some time.

October, Tammy Daybell,
Chad's wife,

dies of natural causes,

although, later, it's found
that she died of asphyxiation.

In November, six days after
Tammy's death,

Chad and Lori are married.

Yeah, this story,
I researched it a lot.

And there's no doubt to me
after looking into it

that Lori was the puppeteer

and Chad was the puppet.

She always justified and
manipulated things
by saying, listen

these are no longer
our children,

these are dark spirits,
they have to be removed.

That was her justification.

She's a sick individual
and I hope

Chad ends up
in the same place as her.

You know,
with all the dead bodies

they still didn't get
he death penalty
and of course,

we can't go
without mentioning,
Mackenzie Shirilla.

The Ohio teen crashes her car
into a brick wall

to kill her boyfriend
and a friend,

all because of a toxic
teen relationship.

Mara, big question,
did she do it on purpose?

Yeah, that is
the big question.

In July 2022, 17 year old
Mackenzie Shirilla,

plowed her Camry
into a brick wall

at 100 mph.

Killing her boyfriend,
20 year old, Dominic Russo,

and his friend, 19 year old,
Davion Flanagan.

At trial, it was revealed that

she had threatened
to do this before.

And surveillance video
was shown

that captured footage
of the deadly crash
and watch this.

Just devastating to see
the moment

that these two young lives
were lost.

You can see Mackenzie

shows no sign
of slowing down.

No attempt to brake
as she heads straight
for that brick wall.

She was hospitalized,
she survived and made a
full recovery.

But the two young men
were killed.

At the trial, an emotional
Mackenzie appears

to deny that she crashed
the car on purpose.
Let's take a look.

Oh, Dom and Davion,

I'm so deeply sorry,

I hope one day you can see
I would never let this happen

or do it on purpose.

I wish I could remember
what happened,

I'm just so sorry,
I'm heartbroken.

I love Dom and Davion,

we were all friends
and Dom was my soulmate.

I wish I could take
all your pain away.

I'm so sorry.

But her tearful statement
was not enough to convince
the judge.

In August, she was handed down
two 15 years to life
sentences.

[Derrick]
And as a police officer,
I've unfortunately responded

to multiple accidents
like this,

where you have death and
what's interesting
about this--

[Nancy] Not an accident,
it's a crash.

Yeah, I agree
and add to your point,

you can go back
and confirm this stuff.

There's computers on board
on the vehicle,

you can also look at
the physical characteristics.

Are there skid marks?

Is there any sign of braking
before impact?

The fact that
there's none of that,

I do agree. It looks like
it may have been deliberate.

The other thing is,
when you're

speeding toward a wall.

You have the opportunity
to stop.

You have the opportunity
to hit the brakes.

And the law,

says that intention
can be implied.

She doesn't have to say,

I'm gonna kill you
by crashing this car.

She can commit acts
that show

it is intentional.

And that's what I would argue
to a jury.

That this was in fact
intentional.

[Derrick]
Actions prove intent.

Yes, you don't have to spell
it out in handwriting

for a jury to get it.

And of course,
there's a case that

has driven fear
into the hearts of parents

across this country.

Up next, the latest
in the murders of

four beautiful
University of Idaho students.

[upbeat music playing]

One of the most high profile
murder cases of the last year,

the murders of the four
University of Idaho students

slaughtered in their own beds.

It's been just over a year

since Bryan Kohberger
allegedly fatally stabbed

four undergrads
in their off-campus apartment.
Mara.

Well Nancy, as you know,

police arrested
Bryan Kohberger about
six weeks after the murders.

State identified his car
from surveillance footage

around the time
of the murders.

And later, they matched
his DNA

to a sample on a knife sheath

left behind
at the crime scene.

The latest on this case
is that the house
where the murders took place

was slated for demolition,

but since Kohberger
has waived his right

to a speedy trial,

they've left that house
standing

so that prosecutors
and the FBI can continue

gathering evidence
from the house.

A judge entered a plea
of not guilty

on Kohberger's behalf.

While prosecutors have said,

they do intend to pursue
the death penalty.

If this isn't
a death penalty case,
I don't know what is.

Well, you're right and
right now, I believe

what's happening
on the defense side,

I think they,
Kohberger's defense

is going to argue that
he often went out alone

for night drives
when he couldn't sleep.

Okay, that's one thing
they'll have to explain away.

And that sounds,
a little believable.

But then, you've got his DNA
on a knife sheath

found under one of the bed
owned by
one of the dead bodies.

He could also claim with that

that he had been to a knife
and gun show.

There's many things
he could use to explain that.

But when one thing mounts,

and the next mounts,
and the next mounts.

Then, it's a mountain
of evidence
you cannot overcome.

Yeah, and we're looking at
means, motives,
and opportunity.

I think we already have
a lot of evidence
that's come about.

The means and the opportunity
but when you look at motive,

there are now rumblings,
I think.

I don't know if they've said
who exactly but...

That Kohberger was DM-ing
via Instagram

one of the victims
whether that was Maddie

or Kaylee,
nobody's confirm that yet.

But it could speak to

what actually transpired
that night

because we do know
what appears

that Kohberger went to
the top floor, initially.

Why is that? Is that because
he knew

Maddie or Kaylee were
up there first,

and that's why he wanted
to go up there? Because

from what I understand,
he entered the house
at approximately,

correct me if I'm wrong,
4.09 a.m,

-and was out by 4.18 a.m.
That's nine minutes.
- [Nancy] Hmm.

So, it seems like he went
in there with a
deliberate purpose

and maybe got derailed
on the way out.

That's why you had two other
murders that occurred
after that.

I don't think it went
according to plan
but I do think,

what happened initially
could be an indication
of a potential motive.

[Nancy]
You know, it's interesting.

When you go to
the crime scene,

the house is right here,
you drive around

and you can park
right behind it,
and it puts you

up at the top level.

And you can see,
straight in there

as clearly as I'm seeing you.

I could look straight in
that house.

See, right there. That's a
great shot, Charles and John.

So, you go around and that
is the back.

You can look right into
their rooms, so,

he didn't have to know them
beforehand.

Or know which room was whose.

All he had to do
was look in the windows
because in the dark,

where I was standing,
you could look straight in

into windows
that were very easily...

You could see everything
lit up especially.

But, there is evidence
that he was stalking

-one or more of these victims.
-[Derrick] Of course.

You know, he had been
in the area

allegedly 12 times

between June and November
when the murders took place.

June is pretty much
when he moved to that area.

So, it seems that it
started almost immediately.

He was reported seen at
the student union so often

that some students thought
he actually attended
that school.

He did not.

He reportedly went to
the restaurant

where two of
the victims worked

at least once, and then
there are these reports

that he was reaching to them
on social media.

So, there is evidence
to support

that he was stalking
at least one of them.

What about the knife, Mara?
Derrick, what about this?

Amazon has him ordering

-a knife like that
and a sheath like that
-[Derrick] Yup.

months before the murders.

So, if he ordered
that knife which

we know that he did, we know
where it was delivered,
the whole thing.

-Where is the knife?
-[Derrick] Yeah, I think--

[Nancy] What happened to that
knife he ordered if it was not
the murder weapon?

Why can't he produce it?

Yeah, obviously it was dumped.

Right, I think it's
an overwhelming amount
of evidence.

But I wanna change gears
for one second

because I've been seeing
things on social media

about the surviving witness,
Dylan.

-And it really infuriates me
because I'm seeing these...
-Victims.

and these
"investigators"

now saying because
they're seeing Dylan on TikTok

or something, dancing
or smiling

that somehow this shows
she's somehow involved.

Listen, like I said earlier.
This happened nine minutes.

More than likely,
Bryan didn't expect

allegedly, if it was Bryan,

came out of that house
not knowing
what was gonna happen

and was out of there
in a rush,

and didn't even see Dylan.

She may be the key
to this case,

let's not incriminate her
without evidence.

I think everyone
on social media
needs to relax.

She's obviously been through
a very traumatic thing.

Let's not pile on top of
a young woman

who will never be the same
and is a victim as well.

You know what happened,
my fiance was murdered

shortly before our wedding.

Well, over 20 years
have passed

and it devastated me.

I dropped out of school.
It was terrible.

20 years have passed,

I was with my now husband,

and my friend,
a friend girl in Atlanta,
a defense lawyer,

and we were having dinner.

A guy came up to me,
20 years late and goes,

"You Nancy Grace?"

I'm like, "yeah."
He goes,

"Why are you sitting here
smiling and laughing,

when your fiance
was murdered?" I'm like...

That felt like somebody poured
cold water on me.

It was awful.

I can't imagine
how she's feeling.

It's awful. I'm getting chills
just remembering that.

It's terrible, I see it.
It drives me nuts.

And it's worth remembering
that she is a victim as well.

She was not a murder victim,
but she certainly
was traumatized.

She provided the information
to the police,

that was very useful in tying
Kohberger to this crime.

Because she provided
a description of height,
weight, build,

and the like, and the eyes,
she kept saying,
bushy eye brows,

and he matched up
with that description.

And she did have
to leave school.

She's not staying there
anymore. So,

she's trying to move on
with her life and heal.

[Nancy]
You know what somebody
asked me the other day?

They came up to me, I think
it was in an airport and went,

"Hey, do you think that
female roommate

had anything to do?"
I'm like,

-[Derrick] Seems--
-No, I don't. Where are they
getting this?

I mean, but if one juror

has that tucked away up here,

-the state's in trouble.
-[Mara] Yeah.

Well, in terms of the evidence
we're talking about the case,

one of the things I find
really interesting
s the cell phone evidence.

A lot of people have come to
realize that cell phones

are basically
a tracking devices.

And so, if you're gonna
commit a crime,

it could be a problem for you
cause it creates
a lot of evidence.

Well, also the absence
of using you phone

can create evidence. So,
in Kohberger's case,

he turned his phone off
immediately before

the murders took place,
4:00 o'clock in the morning.

And turns the phone
back on

immediately after the murders
took place.

That in it of itself
provided some evidence

because it wasn't consistent
with his pattern
of phone usage.

It's not that he turned
his phone on and off often.

So, the fact that it was off
only during the time
of the murders

also paired with GPS data
from the car is convincing.

That's the key right there.

These criminals think that,
"Listen, if I turn off
my phone

during the incident,
I'm covered."

But they would have to plan
this months,

if not years in advance,

knowing they were gonna
do this,

and create that
pattern of behavior

that would be indicative
of them turning off the phone

numerous times over
the previous months,

over the previous years.

Doing it just on that occasion

is not gonna save you.

I've told many jury,
nothing good
happens after midnight.

What is he up at 4:00 a.m.

turning his phone on

airplane mode or
turning it off.

And guys, I went there
at night.

And I drove
that long circuitous route.

It was about an hour

to get from the scene
of the murders

around to his apartment

when he could have just driven
10 minutes and gotten there.

And it was dark, there was
no streetlights,

I nearly ran off the road.

And that's what he did
at 4:00 am?

Good luck selling that
to a jury.

And as far as evidence,
do we all agree

the house not being torn down
right now,

as much of an eyesore
as it may be,

I think it should stay up
until after trial.

What if the jury
wants to go there?

You know, I don't see
the benefit
of knocking it down.

[Nancy]
Believe me, they will.
They will wanna go there.
