normal in Hollywood.

or doesn't like a drink,

Now the stars are bigger,

but not brighter.

They carry a shadow
around with them

Hollywood takes no prisoners.

You can be the flavor
of the month one minute,

and the next you can't get seen

by the janitor at a mega studio.

By the time they're 60

they're either dead
or so far in debt

they don't know how
to get out of it.

And all of them are scheming

to try and make that one big
score before it's too late.

My name is Blaine,
Richard Blaine,

American badass goes missing,

or is it just a Hollywood scam?

Now if this was a movie,

I would have to call it

"Once Upon a Time
in Hollyweird."

In fact, Madsen just
finished a part in a film,

which they were making outside
that very window there.

On the streets of
Hollywood playing opposite

Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio

in a movie called "Once
Upon A Time In Hollywood."

Everybody could be guest stars

as everyone is
welcome in Hollyweird.

I originally trained
in the early 1960's,

and graduated six months later.

My family wanted
me to be a doctor,

but the law enforcement
bug had got into my system

from an early age,

when an officer arrested
a kid at my school

who was bullying other students

after threatening them

with a German handgun
he got from his father,

which he brought back
from the second world war.

It was then that
I made my decision

that I was going to
become a police officer.

In '68 I was assigned to
the Sharon Tate murder case

as an investigating officer.

I remember arriving at
Cielo Drive to a crowd

of police officers and newsmen.

Nothing like this had ever
happened before in Los Angeles.

Yes we did have
the Black Dahlia,

and the William
Desmond Taylor murders,

but nothing quite
like this before.

On August 8th, Charles Manson
ordered one of his followers,

Charles Tex Watson to
go to 10050 Cielo Drive

with several other cult members,

and "Kill everyone there as
gruesome as you can" he said.

And that was exactly
what they did.

Watson drove to the
estate with Susan Atkin,

Patricia Krenwinkle,

and Linda Kasabian.

When they arrived on the
property after midnight

they encountered a car
driven by Steven Parent,

an 18-year-old who had been
visiting the estate's caretaker

at his home in the guest house.

Watson shot Parent to death

before he, Atkins and Krenwinkle

broke into the main house,

leaving Kasabian to stay
at the gate as a lookout.

Celebrity hair
stylist Jay Sebring,

a close friend of Tate's,

was also there, along
with Polish film director

Voytek Frykowski,

and his friend Abigail Folger,

the heiress to the
Folger coffee company.

Tex Watson made Sebring

gather the others
in the living room.

Tate and Sebring
were linked by ropes

tied around their necks.

Sebring was shot and
stabbed to death.

Voytek, Frykowski and Folger
managed to free themselves,

and flee the house,

but both were chased down,

and killed by
Krenwinkle and Watson.

They finally stabbed Tate.

As they left, Atkins
used Tate's blood

to write the word pig
on the front door.

Then, two days later,
on the 10th of August,

the home of Leno and Rosemary
LaBianca were broken into,

and they were stabbed to death.

The crimes created a panic in
Los Angeles never seen before.

More handguns were sold
that week than ever before.

Voytek Frykowski had been
stabbed more than 50 times

and shot twice.

Investigators were
initially baffled,

and failed to make
the connection

between the two murder scenes,

with detectives convinced

that a drug transaction
was the likely trigger

for the Tate murders.

However in October 1969,

various members
of the Manson cult

were arrested at their base,

Spahn Ranch in Death Valley.

They were accused of
stealing vehicles,

and burning equipment.

One of those arrested

implicated Atkins in
an earlier murder,

and Atkins, while jailed,

boasted to cell mates
of the Tate murders.

By the end of '69 all of the
killers had been arrested.

The trial, which
combined the Tate

and LaBianca murders
began in June 1970,

with Casabian, who had
been granted immunity,

as the main prosecution witness.

Despite frequent disruptions,

Manson, Atkins, Vanhouton

and Krenwinkel were found
guilty in January 1971.

Watson was tried and
convicted later that year.

This unremarkable apart
that you see before you

used to belong to
Dorothy Stratten,

a Playboy playmate model,

and Hollywood actress,

that she shared with
husband, Paul Snider,

one time pimp and
low level gangster.

When this murder came
around on August 14, 1980,

I had just been
made a detective.

It was my first big case
when I got the phone call

to attend the crime scene
at 10881 West Clarkson Road

in Rancho Park.

Dorothy Stratten
had come to visit

her estranged husband,

and tell him she
wanted a divorce,

that she had found someone else.

And that someone was
Hollywood film director

Peter Bogdanovich, who had
won an Academy Award in 1971

for "The Last Picture Show."

Stratten had been
living with Bogdanovich

at his Bel-Air mansion,

and was busy making the
film "They All Laughed"

for the director.

This, of course, enraged
her husband, Paul Snider,

who thought that he had
been left at the wayside.

When she entered the apartment

he would go on to rape her,

and then turn a double
barrel shotgun on Stratten,

and shoot her dead.

After the murder Snider
committed suicide

by turning the gun on himself.

The following year I was
heading the investigation

on what became the
Wonderland Murders.

When I arrived at
the crime scene,

it looked more like an abattoir

than a classy LA apartment.

The Wonderland Murders
are also known as

the Laurel Canyon Murders.

They are four unsolved murders

that occurred in Los
Angeles on July 1, 1981.

It is assumed that five people
were targeted to be killed

in the known drug house
of the Wonderland Gang.

These were Ron Launius,
William "Billy" Devereux,

and Joy Miller,

along with the girlfriend

of an accomplice,
Barbara Richardson.

They all died from extensive
blunt force trauma injuries.

Only Launius' wife Susan
survived the attack,

allegedly masterminded
by organized crime figure

and nightclub owner Eddie Nash.

Nash's henchman, Gregory Dials,

and porn star John Holmes,

were at various
times arrested, tried

and acquitted for their
involvement in the murders.

This case is still open,

but we feel we
caught the culprits,

even though we couldn't
do anything about it.

Unfortunately, the people
responsible for those murders

will never be brought to justice

as everyone involved
is now dead.

Since then, there has been
the OJ Simpson case in '94,

the Christopher
Wallace case in '97.

In all that time I
haven't had a scratch,

then last year on the way home

I decided to pick
up some groceries,

and it was late,

and I felt that my
throat had been cut.

So I thought I should get
one of those frozen meals,

and maybe a bottle of
whiskey at the same time.

As I look through the frozen
section in the freezer,

I wonder if I really wanted
another microwave meal,

or would a liquid
supper be better for me?

I suppose that's one of the
perks of being divorced.

Unknown to me, two punks
walk into the store

with only one thing
on their mind.

In 20 years I hadn't
received a scratch,

but as I look up I
can see one of the men

carrying a baseball bat
while the other held a gun.

I quickly realized that this

wasn't going to be
a simple robbery.

They didn't look the
cool calculated type

so I decided to do
something about it.

As they approached the
cash register I jumped out,

but they were too quick for me.

And without thinking they
pulled the trigger of the gun.

The next thing I knew I
woke up in the hospital,

followed by retirement
from the police force

a few months later.

Now I draw a pension,

and make a few more bucks
as a private detective.

It was a hot summer's
day when Dan Halsey

was visited by his mother,
Lynn Halsey Taylor.

She was there to
find out why her son

was in the LA County Jail.

This was the first time

that she had heard from
him for three months,

as he was working for a
Hollywood hotshot actor

by the name of Michael Madsen,

who had suddenly
disappeared, presumed dead.

Now her son was on
a murder charge,

as he was caught
driving Madsen's car

with a dead body in the boot.

that was driven
straight through her,

leaving a hole
