Almost one year ago, we bought our parents

a house here in LA, and they packed up their entire lives

in the mountains and moved here to be with us and the grandkids.

But not everybody was on board with the move.

I've never lived in a city before.

-Or with the house. -What doesn't work?

-Everything. -Or even the design.

This is a Spanish-style home.

That's the look, like, "You guys are insane."

We may have messed up in more ways than one.

It's been eight months since we started this renovation,

and the end is still nowhere in sight.

I know they're frustrated and they're getting anxious.

This is the most important project of our careers,

and it's quickly turning into the biggest nightmare.

We are failing mom and dad.

[opening theme music playing]

-This is my nightmare. -It's really frustrating.

Oh, this is not good.

What?

-I'm stressed. -You're not alone.

[Jonathan] This all has to be ripped out.

-I kind of feel like throwing up. -And rebuilt.

I don't want to finish a beautiful house,

-and then they aren't happy. -No pressure.

My hope is that they will see this house

-as everything they dreamed of. -I love the house now.

Before, it was a love-hate.

[Jonathan] Mom and dad have been stuck in this holding pattern

going between my guest house and Drew's guest house

for nearly a year while we renovate their new home here

in Santa Monica.

The whole project was our idea, so I feel guilt is probably

-the biggest obstacle we're dealing with right now. -100%.

We really appreciate all you're doing for us.

We're excited to get you guys into your house eventually.

All hands on deck. Everybody's got to be here.

We've got to get everything done.

Thankfully, we got the ADU done,

and that put a smile on their faces for a bit.

-Oh, my gosh. -Oh, boy.

This is phenomenal.

[Drew] The main house is a completely different story.

We have been plagued with delays.

We haven't even started framing yet.

Frustration is high, and productivity is low.

We're just hoping that all of this is going to be worth it in the end.

This is a way bigger scope of work than

-we originally thought it was going to be. -Yeah.

600 square foot addition, plus every single utility

in this house is going to be brand new.

Once the power company comes and moves our utilities

over to the new power pole, then we can all of a sudden

start framing up our walls,

which means we can get our rough-in started.

But until that happens, we're still months away

from getting mom and dad in here.

The hard thing is they were in their dream home.

They loved the Rocky Mountains. They loved Banff.

They had a community of friends.

They made a big sacrifice to move down here

to be close to us and the grandkids.

So the quicker we can get them into their house,

the quicker they're going to have that same sense of home.

The main thing is I want to get it to the point

-where we can start getting some walls up. -Walls up, yep.

I'm trying to think if there's anything else we can do

that'll make this feel like home for mom and dad.

I think it's going to come down to how we actually

style it and finish it in the end, bring in all their memories,

bring in some of their artwork.

It's a Spanish-style home, but there needs to be

a bit of that country flair, the way that my mom and dad

have always loved from their years and years

of being a cowboy and a cowgirl.

They like a lot of heavy, rustic elements,

dark woods and chunky furniture.

So the challenge will be figuring out how to incorporate

a few of those elements into an overall Spanish design.

We've lived with our parents for decades.

We know how picky and particular they are.

Now I see where Drew gets it from.

We've been waiting for a power company to show up.

Until that happens, there's not much meaningful progress

we can make.

At the very least, we can start to clean up

the front of the house, which is going to get

the Spanish-style upgrade it deserves.

This is going to be mom's office, mom's art room.

I don't feel like she wants to look outside

and see prison bars.

We'll clean this all up.

In fact, by removing Fort Knox here and putting in

those beautiful arches with the extended front porch,

it gives us room for a beautiful new window

and a classic Spanish-style arched front door.

Well, mom said they prefer clean lines over a curved architecture,

but that's not the style of this exterior.

Yeah, and to make sure we don't get on Mom's bad side,

we will put in some gardens and bring back that nature

that they left in Banff.

It's now going to feel so much classier.

I mean, this is adding so much curb appeal,

just cleaning this up anyway.

Giving back to our parents is the most important part of this reno,

and it's the whole reason we're doing this project

in the first place.

So we're turning one of the home's three bedrooms

into a music room for Dad and another into an art studio for Mom.

Oh, hey. You're pushing me out of the way.

And in order to do that, I have to bring the artiste herself.

-Okay, take a breath. -[exhales]

-Calm. -Okay, wait.

-Where do we start? -You're allowed to fill one basket.

Wait, a basket?

I thought you were going to have a cart.

Okay, you need to hold a basket, too.

My mom has never actually had an art room, ever.

This is going to be so special.

Yeah, it's going to be amazing for her.

And we want to lay it out in a way that inspires her to paint.

Because some of the paintings that she used to do

and some of the sketches, she hasn't done that in 50 years.

So I want to see her doing that again.

[Linda] We just want to outfit the art space as much as we can.

So we know that she likes oil painting.

-She wants to get into calligraphy. -Yes.

She loves organization. That's where you get it from.

-Paper, brushes, stencils. -Canvases.

Like, do you call them crayons?

-What do you... -What?

When she's using colorful... colored pencils?

Sure.

Let's talk easels here.

This is like the mother of all easels.

Let's try some of the different adjustments.

[Linda] I do like that she can sit with this one or stand.

Yeah, that's the one. Okay. And the whole thing goes up.

Well, that's for when you're hunting vampires, that thing.

-No, that's for when mom wants to have one of these... -Oh, my gosh.

We got a lot of things.

This is going to be a gorgeous, gorgeous art space.

I'm just, like, in dreamland. Look at all this paper.

I'm never going to get her out of here.

Like, she's never going to leave.

After what feels like forever, the power company is here

to move the utilities from the middle of our new kitchen

over to the power pole, which means we can finally remove the old walls

and start framing for our large main house addition.

Drew, we got to go.

Hang up. Let's go.

Oh, got a wire here.

-Whoo! My work is done. -Boom.

Our work is just getting started.

We need to build the bones of Mom and Dad's new home.

We're keeping it single-story so our parents can age in place,

but we're significantly expanding the footprint

by adding on a much larger primary bedroom suite,

a functional kitchen, and bumping out the living room

and dining room so that Mom and Dad have enough space

to surround themselves with our entire

extended family here on the West Coast.

I'm bringing mom by the house just to assure her

that work is happening, things are moving forward,

but I don't know if this is gonna make her feel better

or worse about the situation we're in.

Ready, one, two, three, watch your head.

-Go ahead. -Okay.

-You okay? All right. -Yes.

Just a minute, I'll do a double backflip.

So this is your massive new kitchen.

-It's all going to be open. -All pretty much open.

I know you said you want to be able to entertain,

-have it feel like the flow is good, because before, -Yes.

the flow was kind of choppy.

And the fact that we can come in the front door

and virtually see the whole length of the house.

[Jonathan] Yeah.

So there's a little bit curve in the ceiling.

-That's the original ceiling. -Wow.

So we're maintaining the original aesthetic,

and we're going to match it on this side as well.

-Oh, are you? -I'd say we're about a week away

from all framing being done.

[Joanne] Looking around, it seems to me there's still

a lot that has to be done.

We've been living out of a suitcase for a year now,

and I'm just anxious to see it all done.

[Jonathan] We're powering through framing as quickly as possible,

and normally we wouldn't move forward with anything else

while we tackle this monumental job,

but we need to save time wherever we can,

so we're installing our new custom windows at the same time.

-All right. -One, two, three.

-You good? -You good?

-Yep. -Tilt it up a little.

All right.

Ready?

-Rubbing on the top. -One sec.

No, that's it.

Right on it?

It is so close.

All right. [grunts]

There are just so many things happening,

and we're rushing, trying to get caught up.

And now this big picture window

in the living room does not fit.

Give it a good push on the top.

One, two, three.

-No. -Something's hitting.

Why can things not be easy?

If we framed this in at the wrong size,

that is going to cost us even more time,

time that we do not have at all.

[grunts]

It feels like there's an extra layer.

All right, tilt it back again.

-You're going to try again? -Yeah.

Okay, one, two, three.

-There we go. -Boom.

All right, good.

Does it make me a little nervous having a window pane

this large on a house that is this deep in construction?

-Nobody better break it. -I know, right?

[upbeat music playing]

[Drew] One of the most important decisions we need to make is,

how on earth are we going to blend Mom and Dad's rustic,

Northwestern style with the elegant Spanish style of this house

in a way that makes them feel right at home?

And I think the fireplace is going to be

the most contentious point, because I think that

a gorgeous, curvy Spanish-style fireplace

would be absolutely perfect.

But Mom and Dad have said that they want no curves.

They want nice, straight, bulky,

like what they've always had.

And this might be one of the places where we have

to actually put our foot down.

I'll tell you what's giving me a little bit of sweat.

What?

So mom said she did not want a lean on the front.

She specifically said she wanted it flat.

Did you lie to mom and tell her that

-you're going to do it the way she wants it? -No, I'm not lying.

I'm omitting.

They wanted, like, a chunky wood mantle,

but that's a no-go for the style of this home.

So we'll try and meet them halfway with

a bulky white stone fireplace around instead.

We wanted that beautiful curve,

but obviously Mom said no,

so we'll do a plaster feature over the fireplace that looks like stone,

not straight up and down like Mom wanted,

because we want to keep the feature as Spanish-looking as possible.

I think it's beautiful.

Everything about this is the statement

the moment you walk in the door.

But it's not what they asked for.

All right.

It's not that we're withholding from Mom.

It's that we're delaying the joy.

Come my way on the top touch.

[Jonathan] Yes, mom and dad like a more rustic style.

But this fireplace is in the middle of our living room,

which is going to be surrounded by Spanish influence.

We've got a beautiful original cove ceiling.

We're rebuilding the curb doorways

to match what was originally here.

And we're capping it off out front by

adding several stylish arches.

We've been making some executive design decisions

in spaces where we feel it's absolutely necessary.

But somewhere where it has to be exactly

what mom and dad want it to be is the heart

of every Scott family home, the kitchen.

[Joanne] I love to cook, and so a kitchen's

really important to me.

-Best cook ever. -You know how they say the way

to a man's heart is through his stomach?

I worked hard on that.

[Drew] Before, it was way too small for our family.

I mean, this is where Mom and Dad are going

to be baking cookies with the grandkids.

This is where we have our epic family get-togethers.

It has to be absolutely perfect.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Mom will kill us.

Ideally, I want to make sure we line up the sink

-and the range. -Yeah.

So mom doesn't need to move around too much,

because this is going to be a really big island.

We'll make sure it has tons of storage, bar seating

on one side so we can all hang out there together.

But there still needs to be enough room

for the grandkids to run around.

And we'll have a pantry over in this area to store

enough food for all the hungry Scotts.

I have a question. What's the vote here?

I don't like the idea that we don't have

all windows here, because I know Mom loves to stand,

should be at the range, looking out the window,

seeing what's happening out there.

No, no, no, no, no.

Mom wants to be here.

Mom doesn't want to be, like, leaning over the side counter

or going all the way to the door.

She would love to be right there and seeing everything.

That's the range, though. That's where the hood is.

No, I know.

But I think there needs to be a window on both sides of the range.

Mom will have those sight lines.

-We are way beyond the time of changing out. -Yeah.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

You guys last time, you said, how are we moving this thing along?

-And now we're adding more. -Have you met my mom?

No.

-Um... -I honestly think you have this beautiful open flow.

-We've opened everything up. -Open, open, open.

Bam. All wall. No view to the backyard.

This is a great idea, I mean, to be able to look out

-into the backyard a little bit more. -See?

-Oh, my gosh. -I'm not doing myself.

any service here, but it is a good idea.

I'm also more concerned about these windows took

so long to get because they're custom.

Um...

Do we know what the turnaround is right now?

I think about six weeks, six to eight weeks.

If we had two 48-inch windows, so like here,

-one window like that. -Oh, so you want to order two windows.

[Jonathan] I'm not going to lie.

I think this is a terrible idea

because mom and dad have already been bouncing back and forth

between our houses for a year now.

We told them that they could get into their house.

This is going to delay them, I don't know,

at least a month or two.

And it's just one of those things

that it's not the time to do it.

We need to focus on getting everything done.

-if you wanted to do it instead of just... -I don't want to do it.

-I'm telling you, I don't want to do it. -No, I know.

You're never going to have unlimited view

because you're going to have the range there.

Can we tape it out on this wall?

Oh, my gosh.

[Drew] We dragged Mom and Dad away from the mountains, nature,

which they absolutely loved.

I don't want to just shove them in the city

in a new house with no view of nature.

I want them to be able to see their beautiful backyard,

not just wall it off completely.

If we have to order a window right now,

it's going to take us an absolute minimum of six weeks.

-Hmm-hmm. -This whole project, I feel like,

is derailing faster than it's coming together.

[Drew] Honestly, I don't care. It's still a good idea.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jonathan] I can't even look at Drew right now because

he is pushing us way beyond both our timeline

and my breaking point because he's having us tear out that

whole side of the kitchen, reframe for new windows.

We'll have to resubmit to the city, have it inspected.

I just need to breathe, deep breaths,

count to 10, serenity now.

This has been so much work to pull together the change.

It's worth it.

We don't have approval from the city yet for this.

Because this is a sheer wall,

everything has come to a crashing halt.

We literally cannot close up the walls.

We can't do anything else until the city approves,

and the city has still not approved it.

How long?

Worst case scenario, could be seven months, right?

No, there's no... I will go and lay on the floor

in front of the permit office until they approve.

Well, we're working on it.

I think we should be okay, but...

Hold on a second.

So wait, the sink is now off-centered over here?

-'Cause we were keeping the sink centered over here. -Yeah.

I'm going to punch you in the face.

You're the one who made us move all this stuff,

and now you're like, well, I don't know if the space is good.

No, no, no. But I wanted the range there,

and I wanted the sink directly in line.

We had an entire conversation.

It's far better to have the sink under a window.

So now that we have windows to the backyard,

the sink should be at the window.

[Jonathan] We can't close up the walls until the city approves

what I'm now calling Drew's Delay.

But I guess if there's any silver lining at all,

it's that we have a little bit more time to figure out

what mom and dad want for finishes.

I just want to show you some pictures here

of a couple of things I saw online that I really liked.

So, like, there's these chairs.

-No. -Oh, just a minute.

I feel like that is going to clash with

some of the other tones.

Our style is not their style, but we have a secret weapon.

We have a warehouse chock full of all these design elements

that are from past projects or even our personal houses.

So we're bringing mom to the warehouse to have a look around

and pick out some pieces that are already vetted by us.

All right, we have the entire warehouse for inspiration.

Oh, my goodness.

Straight ahead, see these desks over here?

-This is in your art studio space. -Yes.

So when you look at the style of these desks, which do you prefer?

I guess maybe that style.

You're really selling me on liking it by going...

If I have to choose the worst of the worst, that one.

No, I mean, it's not totally my style.

-Oh, yeah. -I like a little bit more of a substantial look.

When you look at the color, white versus natural wood tones.

Oh, I like the wood tones.

-Okay. -Yep.

Previously, we've always gone for dark wood.

-Yeah. -We're done with dark wood.

Now we're going to lighter.

it wouldn't look quite as heavy.

This is good for me to know, because I thought

you wanted a lot more darker tones.

-So that's good. You're growing. -We're growing.

I'm going to keep that idea.

Let's talk hardware.

For the kitchen, I definitely want like

a brushed gold or brass.

As far as design style goes, this is a huge change

for the two of us.

I like that it's not as heavy and clunky looking.

Because we always had horses,

we kind of like to pay tribute to that.

I might not always be up totally with the current trends,

but I don't mind mixing it up a bit.

Well, we have so many different tiles you could choose from.

So if you're thinking some of the detail

for the floor or in the bathroom walls.

I don't care for the white. I would want either a pattern

like that or some calming color.

[Jonathan] So introduce color.

Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't want to have

-the same in every bathroom. -No, no, no.

[Jonathan] What about this shape in a spa-like blue?

-Yes. -And we could tie that color throughout the house.

-Yeah, that's what I like. -Okay, that's good to know.

[Joanne] This is a fun shopping trip.

[Jonathan] It's been almost six weeks since Drew's decision

to tear apart the kitchen wall to add more windows,

but we finally got approval from the city to close up the walls.

We adjusted to make this window bigger.

Your range sits behind here, and then you have

the other window over here.

Yeah.

We have so many people working in the house right now.

-It's called catch-up mode. -Exactly.

And not the salted tomato sauce kind.

-How are you feeling? -It's been a bit of a challenge.

I mean, there's so many things where we just have to be here

-in person to see it. -No, that's not right.

That's not the right shape.

People have broken in the middle of the night.

They think that there's stuff they can take.

-Pop the fence. -Yeah.

-Alarm goes off. -Wow.

He then grabs the fiber line to try and kill the service.

And so he just gripped it.

Now we got to run a whole new fiber line.

-Such a pain in the butt. -Oh, yeah.

Just, it's been a lot.

We're ready for this project to wrap up

so it's fully secure, mom and dad are fully comfortable,

and then I think we'll be happy.

But until now, it's been exhausting.

I feel like if I bring anything up,

you start to get really defensive with me.

Well, I am ready for this project to be over.

Behind all of our cabinetry, we only need like

a level three finish. But everything else,

especially these curves right here.

The arches, the curves, the rounded corners everywhere.

Those are the details that are going to make it

feel like an original Spanish-style home.

I can't get over how much bigger this feels.

It better feel big. We busted our butts in our timeline

making this addition happen.

But now, mom and dad are going to have the space

to spend time at home with their entire family.

We know how she likes to cook for big parties, so yeah.

But nothing feels better than when the paint happens

and everything is uniform.

All of a sudden, wow, you have a house.

It's built with love for mom and dad.

We're inching closer and closer to finishes,

which actually felt impossible a year ago.

Well, it felt impossible a few weeks ago.

Before that happens, we're using some new technology

to seal every single leak in the home's envelope

so it's as energy efficient as possible.

This is a house that will not have any problems.

We don't want mom and dad. They've dealt with us.

We're a big enough problem.

Yeah, they don't need any more problems.

One of the huge upsides to life in LA is that

for the first time in their lives,

our mom and dad will be able to use their outdoor space year round.

Coming through. Hey, come on in.

-Whether you're ready or not. -Yeah, I'm ready.

We want the outdoor to be as comfortable

as what they had for the outdoor in Banff.

-One, two, three. -And they were surrounded by the Rocky Mountains.

Everywhere you look was picturesque and beautiful.

So we need to have some features

that make them feel like they're at home.

It wasn't cost effective to bring a mountain in.

So instead, we're going to bring in a fireplace.

You got to admit.

-Looks pretty great. -Oh, yeah.

And then we'll do a nice precast mantle

-around the top here. -Okay.

[Drew] It'll be one of those big bulky features

that I know they'll love.

For the yard, I want to make sure everything

is level back here so there are no more trip hazards for dad

or the grandkids because this is going to be

the popular family hangout, especially once we install

the outdoor kitchen.

That's fancy.

-That's going to blow mom and dad's minds. -Yeah.

[upbeat music playing]

All right.

-I love these floors. -They're gorgeous.

It just looks like real wood.

There's some darker variations.

And it has knots around to give that rustic

Northwestern vibe mom and dad are most comfortable with.

Are we starting our lay of these floors from the front?

From this bedroom all the way down the hallway

to the far bedroom, and then directly into

the dining room, living room, kitchen.

So then I can start putting cabinets right on top.

I like this. Always thinking of how to save time.

[Jonathan] We can't do a typical kitchen design with a lot of

upper cabinets because Mom's 79, Dad's 90.

We can't have them reaching up high with heavy things,

so we did a lot more storage down low.

Isn't it crazy to think Dad just turned 90?

This project has taken so long,

Dad has entered another decade of existence.

It's crazy.

-So do you want to throw these cabinets in? -Yeah.

We'll start to assemble just so we can start to see

where everything's going to fit.

-Can you line up those holes? -Yep.

-All right. There we go. -There we go.

-Do you want to grab this other side? -Yep.

What is that?

A little extra storage on the back.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold on a second.

What the hell kind of cabinet is this?

-Why is that so back? -That's seven inches.

You couldn't even fit.

You could fit a tea cup saucer in there.

I don't know why this happened.

Because I remember, or you and I were walking around

taping everything out, measuring everything.

For whatever reason, I remember we came

to a conclusion as to why we had to reduce it.

But now it doesn't make any sense.

The final you had talked about was one foot to have a foot,

so 12 inches.

Which works, because you can fit plates in a 12 inch.

But in reality, I think we could fit full.

Let's move this out of the way for one second.

Let's put it up on top of here.

Like...

If we were to actually take... Grab me that loose cabinet.

Bring that loose cabinet around here.

Because that pinch point is over there,

but we're so far off the corner, there's no pinch at all.

Right there.

So if we put this right on back as far as we can...

-Look at that. -All right.

-Yeah. -So even if we did a 15-inch overhang...

You've still got like 48 inches.

Yeah, you've got 48 inches. We're more than good.

So I honestly think...

My biggest fear is, Mom.

This room and Drew's many changes

are going to give me PTSD.

Because from the window that you added to the last minute

to the cabinets, can we fabricate this?

We're going to have to fabricate this on site.

Yeah, nothing really changes other than the depth of this.

Let's just do it. It's not going to change our flooring.

It's not going to change our lighting.

It's not going to change the doors of the cabinets.

No.

All it will change will be the actual boxes.

And most importantly, the happiness of our mother.

Worth it.

[Drew] It'll give them more counter space on the island, too.

Mom wants to be in here with the grandkids cooking

and baking. I know Mom wants that.

This will be a better island for three generations

-of family who are going to get around it. -Yeah, okay.

What about kick plate drawers?

I am going to bury you in the backyard.

[upbeat music playing]

[Jonathan] Mom and Dad's priority is having enough space

for our family, but Drew and I want to make sure

that they have enough space for the things they want as well.

One of their biggest problems with this house was that

there was absolutely no space in the primary bedroom closet.

[Joanne] You know, Dad and I have never shared a closet.

He had his clothes in the next bedroom.

Yeah, that's right.

My dad has gone 90 years without a closet of his own.

He deserves this. He deserves to have his own space.

He shouldn't be going down the hall of the other bedroom

to leave his clothes.

He has always been chivalrous, and he's always given mom

the closet.

But now he finally has enough room in a closet

for all of his stuff. He deserves that.

Dad doesn't get new clothes because he doesn't have

the space for it.

Legit, I think that's one of dad's reasons.

You know what dad actually really loves is

when we retire a shirt from our wardrobe

and then dad takes it.

Yeah, it's now a closet that's big enough for mom and for dad.

For the first time on this entire project,

I'm actually pretty happy with the progress we're making.

We've got stucco happening,

casings are going in, paint choices are being made,

and the kitchen island problem is fixed.

That looks amazing.

Most importantly, it shut Drew up.

-[laughs] -That's the hardest part.

Yeah, the hardest part is to make Drew happy, but this is great.

I think I actually see the finish line in the distance,

but I'm also noticing some issues that

none of us have considered, and I want to address them ASAP.

Mom and dad left a little town with a population of 10,000

to move to a major metropolis with

a population of four million.

So they're going to want some privacy.

So I'm building a wall to keep the front yard separate from the street.

Uh, excuse me.

I go away for a few days, and you change the plan,

and you built an entire fortress?

I go away for a few days, and you built an entire fortress?

Yes.

[Jonathan] Dad has never lived in a city as big as LA,

so I want to just give them some privacy

and separation from the street.

No, I mean, it looks awesome.

In fact, did you pull the inspiration from my house?

-100%. -But unlike your house,

we're going to have the terracotta cap.

So this is our cap on top of the whole wall

-all the way across. -Oh, nice.

I think it's going to be beautiful.

The only thing that I'm not thrilled on is,

how long we're taking before we get mom and dad in the house,

But we need to stop chasing perfection

and just get mom and dad into their home.

The one good thing that overlaps between both

Spanish and Northwestern design is a lot of woodwork.

Seeing millwork everywhere, those wood tones,

it makes it inviting.

We're going a little lighter in the tones,

which leans Spanish.

And we're pairing that with some fresh light blues

throughout the house because mom said they're looking for

calming, spa-like colors that'll step away

from the darker style they've had in the past.

From the arches, that beautiful big fireplace,

this is a Spanish home.

Just has a little boops of Northwestern vibe.

Landscaping is on the go, and we've got solar panels

going up on the roof.

I mean, the power can go out, and mom and dad

would be totally uninterrupted.

They'll literally never have an interruption here.

How long did it take us to convince mom and dad

to get the adjustable bed base?

-It's the greatest thing. -He reads in bed two hours every night.

Their bedroom needs to promote calm and peace.

Sadly, we can't relax because there is so much more to do.

I'm exhausted.

-It's been a journey. -I'm anxious.

How many years of your life have been taken off

-with this project? -Almost two.

I am spent.

But the end is finally in sight,

and we've enlisted everyone's help to make sure

Drew and I don't stumble across the finish line.

Especially in Dad's music room and Mom's art studio.

This is the perfect spot for Mom.

Remember she was saying that, like, the last time

she painted was in their small apartment in Vancouver?

Yeah.

She has some of her old pieces packed away in storage

-I know. -until she actually has a space to work with it.

She has one that...

hasn't been finished.

Can you imagine having something that was a passion

of yours that you haven't been able to do for decades?

-You just have been too busy. Life gets in the way. -Hmm-hmm.

And then to be able to finish an artistic piece

like what she has 50 years later, that to me makes it

-something super valuable... -Yeah.

-It's valuable because it's your mom's. -...to the heart.

-It's my mom's, yeah. -Yeah.

She works so hard, and she's always cooking for all of us.

She needs, like, her own zen space.

-She really does. -Yeah.

When you give an artist a canvas, mom,

her art room, dad, his music room,

-they're going to create something beautiful. -[Linda] Yes.

Having flashbacks of when we installed the guitars in your office?

Yeah, actually.

It looks great.

It really, like, ties everything together

-to have your instruments on the wall. -Yeah.

[Jonathan] Anything that can make it a little bit easier,

-because it was a big move. -Yeah.

-Make them feel comfortable. -Exactly.

That's a gentle chop.

[Jonathan] It was so amazing to have Zooey and Linda,

JD and Anna Lee all helping get this project finished.

This was just a mess of undertaking.

-Permit changes, scope changes. -And on top of that,

the guilt of keeping mom and dad away from their own space longer.

It made a world of difference to know that

-you could be a part of it. -Yeah, we're happy to be here.

I mean, your parents are so giving

and do so much for everyone else.

It's the least we can do.

And they've been waiting a while, you know?

That's where I think it's like a double-edged sword

because you have, they've been waiting

and waiting and thinking about all these things,

and then does it elevate their expectations to the point

where it's an impossibility to meet that?

I am not nervous. I'm excited.

and everything to get all this done for us.

Having you here is literally a dream come true for us.

The lighting in here and having the windows

and everything.

the eucalyptus tree that we took out of the backyard.

When we first toured this house,

there wasn't much sweet about this room.

It took every ounce of energy we had,

but we hope the big main bedroom addition

turned this space into the L.A. retreat of your dreams.

You've just done everything you can for us.
