Policing here is a totally different scenario,

compared to the lower 48.

Here in Sitka, we're on an island of 10,000 people.

There's only 14 miles of road from one end to the other.

Sitka's historically been the safest town in all of Alaska.

So we are proud of that fact.

Dispatch received a complaint from a community member

who said that they hear an alarm going off.

They didn't really describe what kind of alarm it is.

I know that Sitka's a great place to live,

but we do have a drug problem here in Sitka.

That addiction is amazingly powerful.

I don't think you could even comprehend unless you get

to see stuff like this.

Even in a island in the Pacific Ocean,

drugs still manage to find their way here.

was given an estimate of 250 to 300 from City Hall,

I'm grateful that I get to raise my family in Sitka.

We live in bear country where something happens

where you get caught in the elements and people die.

I didn't realize it was gonna be this muddy,

but I guess it's been raining.

and I have all age groups from, gosh,

I think we even have a kindergartener out here.

First grader, all the way up to the sixth grade.

We're just practicing having a plan in the event

that they ever have to spend a night

in the woods by themselves.

I'm gonna give you a period of instruction real quick

on bear spray.

If the bear was coming towards me, guys,

I would spray the bear spray in an S on the ground.

We're going to catch some squirrels.

We're gonna show you how to cook and clean a squirrel

and eat it.

and then falls down.

I received a call from the wildlife trooper.

We had a complainant.

They reached out and notified him

that they found some remains

on a totally uninhabited island.

A community member who was out hiking on Kruzof Island,

found a human skull out there.

(suspenseful music)

(slow dramatic music)

- In Sitka,

horrible events happen once every five years.

And if you look back in the past, you'll say,

"Oh, well that's when that murder happened

"or that's when that horrible event took place."

But thankfully in Sitka,

it happens only about once every five years.

On Sunday, we had a community member

report that they found human remains,

they found a human being, out here.

They contacted the medical examiners office.

They said, "Yeah, no, that's definitely a human."

We're definitely going to do a second search of the island

and hopefully shed some light on what happened out there,

what is this all about, you know,

give us some answers to some of these questions.

Now, you'll notice if you take a look at that map folks,

the red dot is where the skull was found.

And that red dot is right over there.

The plan's going to be we're to start our search

right at the skull and then search outward from there.

So this is the area that the community members

discovered the human remains.

And at this point we haven't found anything

that would lead us to who the person was.

Just start looking around.

We're going to create a team right now from here, okay?

some sort of identifying marks, you know,

anything we could find to help identify who this person is.

We didn't find anything, just other than bones.

We have bones.

We don't know at this point who this person was.

I mean, there was a lot of thoughts

going through my mind regarding like, who could this be.

When somebody goes missing in Sitka, Alaska,

it's usually in the ocean.

They fall overboard, their boats flip.

And a lot of times, we could recover the bodies

but this wasn't actually found

in an area that was actually close to shore.

Well, then you start thinking,

"Well, did a body wash up on the shore

"and then maybe a bear drug into the woods that far?"

it's pretty darn far from the ocean

where the remains were found.

It's believed that the person, based on their skull size,

some of the experts believe that it's a young female.

In our small community, people remember,

you know, who's missing and who went missing,

and when they went missing.

Pretty recently, in Sitka, there was a tragic event

where a younger female went missing.

Her name was a Lael Grant.

♪

There's all kinds of different speculation

on different ideas of what happened to her

and her lifestyle, who she hung out with, what she was into.

Some rumors, this must've been maybe drug-related

and this person could have overdosed.

Other people think maybe this person was murdered.

You're thinking, "Oh, well, maybe this could be,

"you know Lael, maybe not."

I mean, who knows?

I mean at this point, there's no tellin'.

- I had a really bad childhood.

Didn't really enjoy school.

My mom got sick and she died when I was rather young.

Kind of grew up really fast.

Watching brothers and sisters

and trying to take care of the house

and do all that stuff a little earlier

than anyone should probably have to.

So I think that kind of gave me a feeling

of wanting to help people

and kind of improve the city that I live and grew up in.

- Juno, apparently they're seeing a lot of overdoses

and people who are using heroin,

and they're calling it the bad batch of heroin.

They're using their regular amounts of heroin

but they're overdosing from it.

Could definitely be a recipe for disaster.

So it wouldn't be unthinkable that if they have

a bad batch of drugs in Juno, that they might

have a bad batch of drugs here, in Sitka.

Sitka, I would say is a small town

but we do have challenges of similar

to anywhere else you go in America.

There's two different styles of massively addictive drugs

in Sitka and that's heroin and methamphetamine.

We've had horrible tragedies where people

have overdosed, for sure.

So we got some flyers that we have

that we're going to go hand out to some people

who struggle with addiction.

Maybe they have friends of theirs

who struggle with addiction.

When you enlist the help of the community,

so that together we could, you know,

from using drugs, the addiction's strong,

if I can't stop them from using drugs,

maybe there's some things that we could do

to make sure that they don't die.

In Juno, people are dying.

You may know and also remember

if people call 9-1-1 because there's a medical emergency

where somebody is overdosing,

nobody could get in trouble for anything.

- It's been about three weeks since we even got the report

that there was a bad batch of drugs

in the southeast Alaska area.

We did have a few overdoses.

There was a few hospitalizations

but nobody died from, from overdosing

during that time, so that's a positive thing.

Well, we still haven't heard back on the final report

from the crime lab about the human remains

we found on Kruzof Island.

Hopefully, figure out who that person was

and how they died.

The goal would be to give the family

and the loved ones of the decedent

closure, and what happened to them and where they are.
