[Deep Lurk]

[Episode 21]

How can a nurse

have such quick hands?

Old Madam,

by the time you finish embroidering this handkerchief,

Young Master and Miss Mi Lan

might already be engaged.

Engaged?

Yes,

I heard from Dao that

Miss Mi Lan has already agreed.

Young Master is still mourning.

He can't get engaged

or married yet.

But Miss Mi Lan has already agreed.

So isn't it settled?

Mi Lan

makes me feel uneasy.

I can't just let Hongqi

marry her like this.

Jingyu,

give Mi Lan a call later

and tell her

to come over to our house.

I can finish embroidering this handkerchief today.

I want to give it to her.

Alright,

I'll call her right away.

Good.

Are Young Master and Second Young Master at home?

They both left early this morning.

Old Madam hasn't seen them yet today.

If Old Madam called me over alone,

things might be a bit easier to handle.

I can always find a way to dispel her doubts.

I'll play it by ear.

Old Madam,

Miss Mi Lan is here.

Hello, Granny.

Hello, Mi Lan.

Come on, have a seat.

I'll go back to work.

Granny,

you're looking at photos?

Yes,

when you get old,

you tend to reminisce,

take out photos and look at them from time to time,

recalling things from the past.

It's quite interesting.

Look at this one.

This is

the first graduating class of the Girls' School

in their graduation photo.

The graduates from this class

are the most successful.

Look at this one, and this one,

and the one standing next to me.

You must know

all these people now.

They're all famous figures in Changsha now.

Their articles are often published in newspapers.

And this one,

this pair of twin sisters.

Do they look alike?

Yes.

Their

interests and hobbies are almost exactly the same.

They even chose the same career path.

Both went into education.

Let me test you.

Guess who they are.

They're very famous.

The Ji sisters?

Correct.

The older sister

is now the Deputy Minister of Education,

and the younger one is the principal of Mingde Primary School.

Both Shen and Hongqi attended Mingde Primary School.

Which primary school did you attend back then?

So she's indeed suspicious of me.

Tea Garden Street Primary School.

Unfortunately, the Wenxi fire

burned the school to the ground.

I think I have a photo of your school.

Let me look for it.

Really?

Here it is.

Back then,

our Yun family donated many elementary schools.

This photo

was taken when Hongqi's grandfather

attended your school's opening ceremony.

I remember there was a well at your school.

Do you remember where it was?

The well?

Let's look at the photo.

It's interesting.

After the opening ceremony,

he asked me to take a photo of him by this wall.

The water from this well

was particularly sweet.

I remember now.

Yes,

that well at our school.

In the summer,

our teacher always liked to use that well

to cool watermelons for us to eat.

I was too small back then,

always losing out to other classmates.

You've grown to just the right height now.

[Yun Residence]

Look at me,

I've been going on about my old stories.

You probably don't want to hear these things.

I actually enjoy it.

Mi Lan,

your hospital isn't busy today?

The hospital isn't too busy.

I have a favor to ask you.

Please, go ahead.

Here's the thing,

the brother-in-law of our hospital's Head Nurse

has been arrested by the NBIS,

and he's fallen ill now,

quite seriously.

The Head Nurse's cousin wants to go and take care of him,

but the NBIS won't allow it.

Could you talk to Yun Hongshen to help

make an exception?

This is difficult for me.

The NBIS has its own discipline.

Besides,

I never interfere in Shen

and Hongqi's affairs.

But you don't need to worry too much.

I'll

ask him in private.

But I'm not sure it'll work.

That's great.

As long as you can ask, Granny,

I'm already very grateful.

Old Madam,

someone from Happy House is here.

Madam Yun,

I've come uninvited.

Please don't mind.

Please, have a seat.

Granny,

you have a guest.

I'll go back to work now.

I'll come visit you another day.

Alright.

Goodbye, Granny.

Come.

Old Madam,

this is a prized old

ginseng root from our Boss Bai.

It's excellent for replenishing energy and calming the spirit,

perfect for a long-lived person like you.

If you have something to say, just say it.

Boss Bai was impatient in life,

refusing to admit defeat,

and had offended the Young Master.

I'm here to apologize for him.

Everyone in Changsha knows

that the Old Madam has extraordinary grace.

Please be merciful

and don't hold it against us.

The way you put it,

if I don't show mercy,

then naturally I lack grace.

I didn't mean it.

It's better to resolve conflicts than to create enemies.

More friends mean more opportunities, right?

Our two families are not enemies.

We simply have different paths and cannot work together.

We can't be friends either.

Besides,

I never interfere

Hongqi's affairs.

If there's anything you want him to do,

you should go to him directly.

Young Master Yun is known for his filial piety.

No matter what it is,

as long as you can ask...

The question is,

why should I ask?

I know you have refined tastes

and look down on our line of work.

But times are tough these days;

we're just trying to make a living.

Human trafficking,

smuggling opium,

are these things

just for making a living?

Living in this world,

we're all just seeking wealth.

How the money is earned doesn't matter.

These are just minor details.

If you don't mind,

we could make money together.

You really have no shame, don't you?

Although Happy House has closed,

reopening isn't impossible

if we grease a few palms.

We have the people and the boats.

Your Yun family has the reputation and status.

If our two families join forces,

the wealth will surely pour in.

I

sincerely want to be friends with you.

If you agree,

I'll give you 30% of the profits.

At most, I can give up another 10%.

If I give up any more than that,

the business won't be viable anymore.

We Yuns are not money-hungry wretches.

We will not discuss this matter any further.

You may leave now.

-Well… -From now on,

you need not come here again.

Jingyu,

see the guest out.

The Old Madam of the Yun family is no pushover.

Since she deliberately probed me,

she wouldn't have done it for no reason.

There must be a trap in her words.

What could it be?

All my answers were correct

and double-checked.

Which primary school did you attend back then?

Driver,

could you please take me to

the former Tea Garden Street Primary School?

Tea Garden Street Primary School burned down long ago.

Why do you want to go there?

I have a friend who used to attend that school.

She asked me to check

if the well in front is still there.

Miss,

your friend must be mistaken.

The school with a well in front is Mingde Primary School.

Forget about it.

Please take me back to where I got in earlier.

Alright.

Well...

-Why? Didn't work out? -Hypocrite.

Let's go.

Old Madam.

Jingyu,

go find the Second Young Master quickly,

or ask his colleagues

to tell him to come back immediately.

Alright, I'll go right away.

Principal Wei,

is Hongqi there?

Could you please help me find him?

I have an emergency and need him to come home now.

Okay, thank you.

Madam,

the team protecting the Yun family

has sent a message,

saying Madam Yun wants us

to find Leader Yun as soon as possible.

He went out?

Yes,

he left early in the morning.

We don't know where he went.

Tell them to stand by.

I'll go look for him.

Yes.

Find him as soon as possible?

Did something happen to his family?

Where could he have gone?

Ling Han.

This is a place

Ling Han never allows others to set foot in.

Yun Hongshen believes

he will definitely find

something interesting here.

Not the cipher key,

not evidence of Ling Han framing Zhu He and Li Liang,

but rather, Ling Han's hidden

secrets that he doesn't want to reveal to others.

There's not a single photo in this house,

nor any photo albums.

It's as if in Ling Han's life,

there are no traces of anyone staying.

But as far as Yun Hongshen knows,

Ling Han has very deep feelings for his mother.

Then why doesn't he even keep a single photo

of his late mother with him?

Young Master Yun.

Hi.

Hongqi, I was just looking for you.

Your mother just called.

She wants you to go back home immediately.

It seems quite urgent.

Alright.

I'll head back first.

If anything comes up at school,

please give me a call.

Okay.

Go back now.

Why isn't there even a single photo?

What exactly is he trying to hide?

Why are you here?

The team protecting your Grandma at your house

called back to the station,

saying your Grandma wants them to find you as soon as possible.

I guessed you might be investigating Ling Han privately,

so I came to try my luck.

Something urgent must have happened.

Otherwise, Grandma

wouldn't ask for help from people of the station.

You should go back now.

What about here?

I'll take care of the follow-up work.

Don't worry.

Your secret is safe with me.

Okay.

I'll be going then.

Miss Mi Lan,

why are you back?

You really scared me.

I was worried about the second madam of the Bai family.

They've already left.

Come on.

Have a seat.

Where's Jingyu?

Oh, her?

She's out running an errand for me.

Sit down.

You must be tired.

Let me make you a cup of tea.

Okay.

Thank you.

Have some tea.

Thank you, Mi Lan.

Have a seat.

[Photo taken of Mingde Primary School in the 10th year of the Republic of China]

You tricked me.

Who are you?

Hongqi. Hongqi.

No.

I have no chance to turn back.

No right to choose.

No freedom to decide between life and death.

I need you to do something for me.

Help! Help! Help!

Old Madam is dead!

Cong Hu.

Your sweetheart is looking for you,

saying she's sick

and wants you to go back.

I'm going back.

Okay.

Yang,

we're here.

Don't-

Get out of the way!

You-

This-

Young Master.

Grandma.

Grandma, please wake up.

Open your eyes and look at me.

I'm back, Grandma.

Grandma.

Grandma, please open your eyes and look at me.

Didn't you ask me to come home, Grandma?

Open your eyes and look at me.

Who did it?

-Who did it? -Young Master.

Young Master.

Go find them.

Go find them!

Go find them!

Alright.

Go find them!

Go find them now!

Young Master.

How could this happen?

Grandma.

Please look at me again.

Captain Tang.

What happened?

The bodyguard at Gui's house was killed in a car accident.

What?

What's going on today?

Another one died?

Another one?

What?

Has someone else died somewhere else?

Madam Yun of the Yun family was poisoned and died.

What?

Yang.

Yang.

Wake up.

Something happened to the Yun family.

Madam Yun has been killed.

[Yun Residence]

On the same day that Yun Hongshen

proposed the strategic agent dispatch plan,

you went to the payphone booth on Hunan Road

and made a call to Shanghai.

I want to know

who answered that call.

Chief,

that's one of my informants in Shanghai.

You can check with our colleagues

at Shanghai Station.

Many days have passed since then.

You've had plenty of time and ability

to find a perfect witness.

I know what you're thinking,

but there's another possibility.

You watched me

so you could use me

to find out who's lurking around Okamura Yasuji.

I can't prove whether

my curiosity about this matter is reasonable or not,

but neither can you prove yourself,

can you?

Alright, alright.

We're all colleagues here.

There's no need for so many conspiracy theories.

I think both of you have been

too on edge lately.

I welcome you to make bold guesses.

But what I want is the most solid evidence

behind the speculation.

Understand?

Both of you, sit down.

Ling Han,

your most important task now

is to find the killer of Li Miaohan's lover.

Don't get too caught up

in these kinds of matters anymore.

Okay?

Yes, sir.

You may go.

[Bureau of Investigation and Statistics]

Director,

Madam Yun asked us to find Yun Hongshen earlier.

Leader Wen went alone

and managed to shake off our tail.

The team couldn't find Leader Wen,

so they came back.

Also,

Madam Yun is dead.

She died right after asking us to find Yun Hongshen.

Do you think it could be the Japanese

taking revenge on Yun Hongshen

by venting their anger on the old lady?

It may or may not be the Japanese,

but it's definitely not revenge.

Didn't you just say

that before Madam Yun was killed,

she asked our people to find Yun Hongshen?

She must have had some important information

that she urgently wanted to tell him.

Obviously,

it was a silencing.

But where was Yun Hongshen at that time?

This is the handkerchief Grandma wanted to give to Mi Lan.

My Grandma's embroidered orchid

looks just like a real one.

True to the saying, "Embroidered flowers exude fragrance,

and stitched figures brim with spirit."

My Grandma's craftsmanship

is truly exceptional.

Grandma,

who are you planning to give this to?

After I finish embroidering it,

I want to give it to Mi Lan.

Since it's finished,

why is there an extra red cross?

Ten?

No,

this should be an unfinished "mi" character.

The commander said

only Mi Lan and Mrs. Jin came here today.

Mrs. Jin didn't dare to harm Grandma.

Could it be Mi Lan?

Shen,

what do you think of Mi Lan?

Mi Lan is the murderer.

Grandma must have discovered

something suspicious about Mi Lan.

But Mi Lan found out

and murdered Grandma.

Yun Hongshen fell into

deep remorse and self-blame.

He actually allowed such a dangerous person

to frequently appear around Grandma.

He got Grandma killed.

What?

Madam Yun has been killed?

How could this happen?

She was just a harmless old lady,

who had nothing to do with the outside world.

Who would want to kill her?

Just because she's Yun Hongshen's Grandma,

many people would want her dead.

It must be the Japanese who did it.

But why?

If they wanted the codebook,

they wouldn't have killed her.

Yun Hongshen will surely seek revenge.

No one knows

what he would do.

If they had a choice,

the Japanese wouldn't have gone this far.

Madam Yun must have found out some secret.

She's barely left the house recently.

What secret could she possibly know?

That doesn't mean others can't visit her.

Who would visit her?

What for?

What's wrong with you?

You're so flustered.

Is it because of Yun Hongshen?

Now is not the time to lose your composure.

If you really want to help him,

go find the killer.

I understand.

It's really her.

They've been here.

He must be very sad now.

Are you alright?

Get out of my way!

What are you going to do?

Kill her and avenge Grandma!

Do you know who the murderer is?

Tell me who she is.

I'll kill her for you.

You should stay here

and take a few more looks at your Grandma.

You'll

never see her again.

This is the last time

you'll ever feel the warmth on her.

From now on,

you can only remember

how warm her hands were,

and how it felt

when she hugged you.

Every look you take is one less you'll have.

Stay with her one last time.

I'll avenge

this for you.

This is my personal matter.

None of your business.

This is not just your personal matter.

The Chief said

your Grandma might have discovered

some important secret,

which is why she was killed.

If I find the killer,

I can uncover her secret

or the people behind it.

I bet

this must have something to do with the cipher key.

Maybe

it's also related to the real mole

in the station.

Right,

the cipher key.

Kunwu.

Mi Lan is likely my current

best lead to Kunwu.

She can't die yet.

Go back now.

Thank you.

Do you know Cong Hu?

Yes.

He's my bodyguard,

from the Northeast.

When the Japanese invaded,

he fled south

and has been to many places,

only came to Changsha this year.

I saw that he was skilled

and honest.

So I took him in.

Did you tell him about your conflict

with Madam Yun?

I mentioned it briefly,

but didn't say much.

You've been kind to him.

Would he kill her

to repay you

and get revenge?

If he really did that,

we'd have a blood feud with the Yun family.

What kind of repaying is that?

He definitely wouldn't do that.

Uncle Yang.

Can you still hold on?

I'm fine.

I'm just worried about my brother.

Qi.

Qi, are you alright?

You have to stay strong.

We can't leave Madam Yun like this.

We need to

properly arrange the following matters.

Uncle Yang,

why did this happen?

Why?

I feel...

I feel like I'm dreaming.

Dreaming.

Dreaming.

-Young Master. -Qi!

Young Master, Young Master!

What are you doing?

It doesn't hurt.

Uncle Yang, it doesn't hurt.

This must be a dream, Uncle Yang.

Qi,

try to calm down!

You know,

Madam Yun loved you the most.

If your Grandma saw you like this,

how could she rest in peace?

If I had come back earlier,

would she still be alive?

If I had stayed at home,

not been so busy,

and watched over Grandma,

would Grandma still be alive?

It's my fault Grandma died.

It's my fault Grandma died.

It's my fault Grandma died.

Qi!

I need you to calm down!

Pull yourself together, okay?

Stop torturing yourself like this.

You know,

your father is gone.

You need to take responsibility for this family.

But look at you now,

is this how you're taking responsibility?

I can't do it.

I can't do it, Uncle Yang.

Qi, you can do it.

Qi, you can do it.

Trust me.

-You can do it. -I can't.

Uncle Yang, I can't do it.

How could this happen?

Granny was fine when I left.

No.

I need to see Granny.

Don't go there.

They're not in the mood for you right now.

What time did you go to the Yun's Residence?

And what time did you leave?

I don't remember the exact time.

It should have been shortly after I started work,

Jingyu called me.

When you take leave from the hospital,

don't you need to sign a leave slip

or something like that?

Yes,

she signed it afterwards.

How long did you stay at the Yun's Residence

and what time did you leave?

The exact time...

I didn't stay long.

There was a guest,

then I left.

I really can't

remember the exact time.

I didn't check the time.

She came back around 9:30.

The patient in bed 20 had surgery at 9:30.

When she was back,

the patient had just got in.

What kind of transportation did you take to and from?

Rickshaw.

The exact time you left the Yun's Residence

was 8:27 in the morning.

Haven't you noticed

that every time you go to the Yun's Residence,

there's always a car parked outside?

I have noticed.

We arrange for colleagues every day

to protect Madam Yun.

They'll record

the characteristics of everyone entering and leaving the Yun's Residence,

including precise time.

Then you knew it.

Why are you still asking me?

What I really want to ask is,

you left the Yun's Residence at 8:27,

subtracting the time it took to return,

which shouldn't exceed 20 minutes,

but there's a 40-minute time gap.

Where did you go and what did you do?

I got off the rickshaw.

Why?

You probably don't want to go to the NBIS again,

so I advise you to tell the truth.

Yun Hongqi gave me a brooch,

and I found it missing

when I got on the road,

so I got off and searched for it.

Finally, I found it.

Look,

this is it.

Which rickshaw

did you ride back from?

Do you remember?

I don't remember.

[Military Hospital]

Go and find

Mi Lan's former classmates and teachers

from nursing school.

Show them her current photo to confirm

if she's the same person.

If she is,

look into her past.

Find out if she had any unusual experiences

or connections with specific individuals.

Anyway,

the more detailed, the better.

You suspect she's the killer?

After what happened this time,

my previous suspicion is further confirmed.

This woman

is definitely not just a nurse.
