[Deep Lurk]

[Episode 11]

I can't care that much.

Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures.

Just don't break anything.

Don't worry.

How is Mi Lan?

Is she feeling better?

It's been so chaotic these past couple of days.

I almost forgot about her.

How about this?

After you look through it tonight,

I'll return it to Mi Lan tomorrow.

After all, this is a keepsake

her father left her.

Don't worry.

Hongqi,

tomorrow, I want to go with you.

I have some questions for her too.

Okay.

I'll go back then.

Don't stay up too late.

I've loved eating candy since I was little.

My father knew I loved candy.

Every time he came back from a business trip,

no matter how busy he was,

he would always bring me candy.

Mi Lan,

we can buy you candy from now on.

What flavor would you like?

We can buy you any kind.

Thank you.

It's okay.

How could I accept things from you?

Mi Lan,

last time you were taken away by the NBIS,

it was all because of us.

You should give us a chance to make amends.

It has nothing to do with you.

Mi Lan,

since we're friends,

seeing you so sad

really breaks our hearts, too.

We want to do something for you.

This candy isn't anything expensive,

so please don't refuse.

Miss Mi Lan,

your father left with so few belongings.

He lived in Shanghai for so many years,

yet he wasn't influenced by Shanghai people's meticulous lifestyle.

He just grabbed a few things and left.

No.

It's not like that.

My father, he was...

rough on the outside but refined on the inside.

Don't be fooled by how little he was taking with him.

It was all he needed.

Look.

Dad was still the same as before.

He liked to hide a new bill among a stack of old ones.

When he gave me New Year's money when I was a child,

he did the same thing.

Mom often said

that Dad was the kind of person

who was best at giving surprises.

But this time,

what he gave me wasn't a pleasant surprise.

A new bill tucked in a stack of old ones.

Dad was such a good person.

Why did they do this to Dad?

I just can't understand it.

Did you bring this box back from the police station?

Did they say

they'd catch the murderer who killed my father?

That might be difficult.

The killer dared to commit murder in broad daylight.

It proves he's confident he won't be discovered by the police.

Can you help me?

What do you want me to help you with?

Help me find out who killed my father.

If you can find the murderer who killed my father,

for the rest of my life,

I'll repay you by serving you in any way I can.

I swear.

Mi Lan,

we'll help you,

but we don't need your repayment.

Because we're friends,

and we've already got some leads.

Tonight we can...

Hongqi.

I see you're not looking too well.

You should rest first.

We have some business to attend to, so we'll be going now.

Let's go, Hongqi.

We'll be off now.

Farewell.

[Changsha Hotel]

[Fundraising Gala for the Anti-Japanese War in Changsha]

Deputy Commander Jin,

I'd like to propose a toast to you.

You have defended Changsha

with great effort and made great contributions.

Every man has a duty

to defend their homeland.

[Jin Guoqiang, Commander of Changsha City Defense Command of Kuomintang]

Aren't you going to dance?

I really don't know how.

Yun Muzhi's two sons are really thick-skinned.

Their old man has disgraced himself in his later years.

The scandal has spread throughout the city.

And they still have the nerve to show their faces in public.

Exactly.

If it were me,

I would have already hidden away somewhere deserted.

May I ask your name?

I am Xu Heng,

the owner of Hengda Trading Company.

Mr. Xu,

I didn't quite catch what you said earlier.

Could you repeat it?

Sure, I'll say it again.

Your father sold out the country for personal gain.

He sided with the enemy.

I really can't agree with that.

Our Yun family has been established in Changsha for a hundred years,

We've never had a single unfilial descendant.

They say rumors stop with the wise,

yet you're spreading false information.

Likewise,

I cannot agree with you, either.

Young Master Yun,

you're allowed to do this,

but we're not allowed to talk about it?

It's been published in the newspapers.

Are you saying they're falsely accusing your father?

Wang Jingwei is determined to save the country indirectly

and jointly build the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere.

This was also published in Shanghai newspapers.

According to your logic,

this would also be considered words of wisdom.

You...

Young Master Yun.

Long time no see.

Chairman Zong.

Minister Yang, you're here too.

Chairman Zong.

I assume this is your younger brother?

Second Young Master, pleasure to meet you.

Indeed, you're quite a talented young man.

You flatter me, Chairman Zong.

Minister Yang,

Old Master Yun's two wise grandsons

are truly impressive.

It seems the Yun family has worthy successors.

They're just kids who don't know any better.

We've caused you trouble, Chairman Zong.

Punch cigars.

Not at all.

Those people just need to be taught a lesson.

It's good for the young master to give them a warning.

Is that person…

Li Miaohan,

the famous movie star.

She does look pretty good.

Do you have any taste?

Is she as pure as Mi Lan?

Disgusting.

Minister Yang,

excuse me for a moment.

Please go ahead.

Deputy Commander Jin,

Miss Li will have a drink with you.

Hello, Commander.

I'll excuse myself for now.

Uncle Yang,

I'll go over there first.

Tonight, the Japanese

will likely take advantage of my attendance at the wine reception

to search for the codebook at my house.

So, I…

need your help.

What's in it for me?

Any live captures will be yours.

This deal isn't very favorable.

If there are many of them,

my colleagues are likely to suffer casualties.

If we don't capture anyone alive,

their sacrifice would be in vain.

Of course, you can refuse,

but you will miss a chance

to capture Japanese agents

or rather, a chance to get close to the cipher key.

You're very good at doing business without principal.

I'm only responsible for providing you with

such a choice.

Whether you accept it or not

is your own business.

Also,

let me remind you of something.

If you really want to get involved,

don't tell too many people about this.

It'll be very disadvantageous for you.

Someone's here!

What are you doing?

The two young masters of the Yun family are so handsome.

Right?

I think so, too.

I think Young Master Yun is more handsome.

Haven't you noticed?

His smile is very charming.

I prefer Second Young Master Yun.

He has a mysterious aura about him,

And he's such a gentleman.

He's very graceful,

like a nobleman.

Let's go.

You know what?

He just smiled at me.

Look how happy that makes you.

Jingyu.

What was the name of that nurse Dao mentioned last time?

Mi Lan.

Right.

How is that girl?

I heard she's quite nice.

She's helped both young masters a lot.

Old Madam,

why are you asking about that?

Hongqi is not young anymore.

I think it's time for him to start a family.

Old Madam,

our two young masters

are both one in a million.

You don't need to worry about their marriages.

Old Madam.

Why did you suddenly come back?

Didn't you attend the wine reception

together with Hongqi and Shen?

It's like this.

Second Young Master asked me to take you somewhere first.

Please come with me.

Now?

-Well… -Come on.

Keep a close eye.

If you spot anyone attempting to enter Yun's Residence,

apprehend them immediately.

Understood.

I've changed both the quilt and the sheets.

And I've cleaned the room again.

It's very clean now.

Thank you, Ms. Yuan.

You can go about your business now.

I'll call you if I need anything.

Alright then.

Old Madam,

if you need anything,

just call me anytime.

Okay.

Old Madam,

Second Young Master said

that tonight,

you and Jingyu will stay here for the night.

He'll come to pick you up first thing in the morning.

What about the two of them?

There will be thieves breaking into our house tonight.

But don't worry,

Young Master and Second Young Master won't be the ones who will catch the thieves.

It'll be someone else.

They won't be in any danger.

Alright.

Hurry up and head back.

Keep an eye on those two for me.

Certainly, Old Madam.

Jingyu,

take good care of the Old Madam.

I will.

Old Madam,

let's go sit over there for a while.

After him!

[Changsha Hotel]

Minister Yang's speech was excellent.

I'm sure you all feel the same way.

As for me,

I'm here to state the position of the Changsha Chamber of Commerce.

We, the business community,

are very willing to respond to Minister Yang's call

and actively contribute funds

to purchase medicine for the soldiers on the front lines.

It's our small contribution to the war effort.

Ten thousand? That much?

That's too generous.

That's ten thousand!

Ladies and gentlemen,

I assume you are all aware

that my father has recently passed away.

My brother and I should be in mourning,

and it's not appropriate for us to be ostentatious.

However, before my father's passing,

he repeatedly admonished us brothers

that without a country, there can be no home.

No matter what circumstances we face,

we must always put our country before our family.

As a member of the Yun family,

I dare not forget my late father's teachings.

Nor do I dare dishonor the Yun family's traditions.

Taking this opportunity tonight,

on behalf of the Yun family,

I would like to express our gratitude

to the soldiers on the front lines.

We hope this will help the soldiers on the front lines…

One hundred thousand!

get through this cold winter.

One hundred thousand!

I also wish everyone

an enjoyable evening.

The Yun family has found a worthy successor.

Indeed.

There's a reason why the Yun family has thrived in Changsha

for a hundred years.

It's precisely because of these righteous family values

that they have built an unshakeable foundation.

Where is Miss Li?

Didn't you say

you would arrange for us

to spend a lovely evening together?

Deputy Commander Jin, don't be impatient.

Miss Li might be hiding out of shyness.

Rest assured.

I'll go find her for you right away.

Calm down.

Hurry up and go!

Slow down.

Get in the car!

Hongqi, wait for me there!

Be careful!

We're even now.

What's even?

The old score of you interfering with my official duties

is wiped clean now.

When did I ever interfere with your official duties?

You're really something, you know that?

I saved your life, after all.

Cut the crap.

Who asked you to save me?

If you didn't want to save me, then don't.

Meddling in other people's business.

[Kudo Hishiko, Codename Onitetsu, Japanese Agent]

You arranged for someone to go to the Yun's Residence tonight?

You wanted to get the codebook from Yun Hongshen?

You fool.

It's something so important.

Do you think he would keep it at home?

I just wanted to try my luck.

It would be best if we could find it,

but if not, we could also eliminate

the old lady of the Yun family.

This would surely throw Yun Hongshen into disarray.

Can you use your brain

when you take action?

Yun Hongshen's father just died.

Have you seen him in disarray?

Is the person sent to the Yun's Residence today

the insider you arranged independently?

Yes.

His value is high.

He's a dagger I've planted in the NBIS,

only to be unsheathed at the most critical moment.

Hand him over to me.

He won't be under your control anymore.

That's impossible.

He only answers to me.

This is an order.

It seems you haven't taken General Okamura's words

to heart.

Help! I'm being molested!

-I'm being molested! -Mi Lan?

That day at your doorstep,

if you hadn't interfered,

we would've caught Yun Hongshen by now.

Perhaps

we would have obtained the codebook as well.

You must be dreaming.

I doubt

if you have the ability to run a spy network in Changsha.

Miss Kudo.

Am I wrong?

Do you think if you catch Yun Hongshen

and torture him,

he'll hand over the codebook to you?

You're too naive.

He would rather die than give you the codebook.

It doesn't matter if he dies.

If he's dead,

the value of the codebook will disappear, too.

I'll find another chance to destroy the cipher key.

Then, this intelligence will be cut off at the source.

You're so stupid that it's even impressive.

Do you think Yun Hongshen would

leave no backup plan, like you?

How can you be so sure

that he hasn't entrusted the codebook to someone else?

I'm stupid?

As an old Chinese saying goes,

when I entered this profession,

you were still suckling at home.

The fact is,

you haven't put General Okamura at ease.

Otherwise,

he wouldn't have sent me here.

Very well,

I'd like to see

your methods, Miss Kudo.

I presume you

can change our difficult situation in one fell swoop.

You must be confident of getting the codebook, right?

You have no right to question my course of action.

I'll say this one last time:

Don't even think about targeting Yun Hongshen.

No questions allowed.

No secret moves on your own.

And that well-connected informant of yours—

you'd better tell him to be careful.

He's been far too active lately.

If the NBIS discovers him,

it would be nothing if you all get caught in one swoop.

But if this plan is affected,

all our efforts will go down the drain.

I'm sorry.

I shouldn't have gone to the Changsha Hotel without permission.

I'm willing to accept any punishment.

You disobeyed my orders and went out on your own,

and exposed yourself so thoroughly.

Why did you even bother coming back?

You, as you are now,

are more valuable dead than alive.

Please give me one more chance.

If you're discovered again,

don't bother coming back alive.

Get out.

Yun Hongshen and Wen Yeming are not to be trifled with.

It's only a matter of time before Kawashima is discovered.

You'd better be careful when you act.

Don't leave any more evidence behind.

Wen Yeming and Yun Hongshen have been getting close lately.

This isn't good for us.

This is not your concern.

Let me emphasize once again.

You must act under my orders.

The killer fired from here.

It was a close-range shot.

One shot, instant death.

And your agents didn't even put up a fight.

This suggests the killer was someone they knew.

It was an inside job.

Are you trying to lecture me?

Who sent you here?

Madam.

That person was shot in the left leg.

It's all messed up,

and there's even blood.

It's really unlucky.

Watch what you say.

Who did they die for?

Don't misunderstand.

My brother didn't mean it that way.

After all, there's an elderly person at home.

Regarding this kind of thing,

there's more or less some taboo.

All the people in your family are the same.

You have no qualms about using others,

and after you're done using them,

you kick them away without mercy.

Is that how the Yun family does things?

I understand you're upset,

but what does this have to do with our Yun family?

How have I used you?

I hope you always remember

the special agents who sacrificed

themselves for you today.

I'm also very sorry about your colleagues' sacrifice.

Of course,

I will always remember their names, too.

But this wasn't caused by me.

The killers are Japanese.

They came to steal the codebook.

We need to work together against the common enemy.

Work together?

Are you sure you can do that?

Isn't that what I'm doing right now?

I've already provided clues

about the killer who murdered Myna.

That's not enough.

I need you to share

all the information you know with me.

The timing isn't right yet.

There's a mole inside your organization.

I won't feel at ease until this mole is found.

To put it bluntly,

you still don't trust me.

It's not that I don't trust you.

I don't trust that mole.

He's in the shadows while you're in the open.

If you accidentally fall into his trap,

forget about the information,

even you could be in danger.

I've said before,

cooperation requires sincerity.

If I find out

that at a crucial moment,

you've concealed important evidence from me,

I will reconsider

our cooperative relationship.

As you wish.

Anyway, even if we're fighting our own battles,

I won't lose, either.

This money is for the families of these people.

I know.

People like you—

if you die at the hands of the enemy,

it might be considered a great honor, right?

But what about their families?

It means losing the breadwinner of the household.

That's the beginning of a hard life.

Having some extra money to survive

wouldn't hurt.

Don't you agree?

Thank you.

You're welcome.

Have the surveillance measures for Mi Lan's family been implemented?

Yes, they have.

Madam,

Mi Lan seems so delicate and fragile.

She's also very timid.

Even when she was so frightened, we couldn't get much out of her.

She should be okay, right?

If she's not that simple,

she must be a really tough character.

We can't let our guard down.

Understood.

I heard that the two young masters from the Yun family

stole the show today.

Miss Mi Lan

might have actually fallen for one of them.

That's why she's keeping her mouth shut.

But to be honest,

these two young masters from the Yun family,

no matter which one,

are both worth falling for.

Someone's here!

What're you doing?

I prefer Second Young Master Yun.

He has a mysterious aura about him,

And he's such a gentleman.

He's very graceful,

like a nobleman.

What is all this nonsense?

Just focus on driving.

It seems this killer is very vigilant.

You'll need to find another breakthrough in the future.

I've already asked my brother to check with the major foreign firms

to investigate the supply channels for Punch cigars.

So many people were smoking them last night.

They must have received a large shipment recently.

Remember,

you must investigate secretly.

The killer must not become aware of your intentions.

I understand.

Once my brother has some news,

we'll discuss our next move.

Shen,

open it and take a look.

This was what you asked your father

two months ago.

I happened to be in Hong Kong at that time.

Your father asked me

to have a pair custom-made for him.

They just arrived a couple of days ago.

Dad.

Do these cufflinks look good?

They're alright.

So cool.

Dad,

can you buy me a pair?

It's not impossible,

but you'll have to wait until you can

complete missions independently.

After you become a Lone Hero,

they will be your reward from me.

I hope you can become a Lone Hero.

However,

I can't give them to you yet.

Auntie has come down.

Why are you here so early?

Shen.

Grandma.

I woke up early today.

Did you sleep well last night?

Very well.

What happened to your ear?

It's just a small scratch.

There was a thief in the house last night.

Did you fight with the thief?

No.

Rest assured.

It was just a false alarm.

At my age,

what I hope for most

is for their generation to be safe and sound.

Your safety is all that matters.

Grandma,

let's go home then.

We can go home now?

It's fine now?

We'll take our leave, then.

-Okay. -Thank you.

Let me see you out.

No need.

You're up so early.

Why?

Don't you want to sleep a bit longer?

Being with you

makes me realize how fleeting a night can be.

Commander Jin, you've met many charming people,

and I'm certainly not the only one.

You men,

you're all sweet talk when you're just playing around,

spewing flattery as if it costs nothing.

Once the passion fades,

you forget us in an instant.

It's tragic for us women.

Once we misplace our affection,

our lives are ruined.

Miss Miaohan,

rest assured.

I, Jin Guoqiang, am absolutely not that kind of person.

My feelings for you, Miss Miaohan,

are clear to heaven and earth.

I hope so.

It's getting late.

I have to go.

What's wrong?

I'll come see you again tonight.

Let me accompany you to work.

Well...

I'm afraid that's not possible.

So much for "clear to heaven and earth,"

you won't even do this small thing for me.

Where I work

is all about guns and cannons.

Why are you coming with me?

I'm just curious.

I just want to see

how our Changsha City Defense Command

looks like?

Miss Miaohan, you're truly one of a kind.

Other young ladies just like to go shopping for clothes,

have coffee,

or watch movies.

But you

want to see the Changsha City Defense Command.

To be honest with you,

our film studio

is preparing to make

a movie about defending Changsha.

I'm just

trying to experience life, you know.

Making a movie?

What are you thinking?

This is war. It's the resistance against the Japanese invasion.

It's not a show!

Commander.

The acting and filmmaking

are also to inspire the resistance.

Can't you be a little more flexible?

I see.

You seduced me into bed

just for this?

To be honest, it's absolutely impossible.

Who knows if, among your people,

there are Japanese spies?

If the city's defense secrets are leaked,

you'll lose your head. Do you want that?

How can there be Japanese spies?

You think too much.

We're just acting for a movie.

My boss told me

if I can pull this off,

I'll be the female lead.

But if I can't…

What do you mean?

You think you can threaten me with that?

Let me tell you something,

I've seen this kind of thing many times before.

I, Jin Guoqiang, have slept with women before, and I don't care.

I've had my fun, and that's that.

Don't think that just because you're a celebrity,

you can do anything to me.

Be careful, or I might charge you as a Japanese spy.

Don't be afraid.

As long as you behave,

nothing will happen to you.

Go to sleep.

It's me.

He didn't take me home.

I tentatively brought up

the idea that I'd accompany him to work,

but he immediately became alert.

Forget about the city defense map;

he didn't even tell me

which way his office door opens.

It seems this person is not easy to crack.

That's not even the most important thing.

I think

he's starting to suspect me.

I understand.

You can go back.

Okay.

[Military Hospital]

Mr. Li,

I'm here to pick up the mail for our department.

Yes, there are some.

I've kept them all safe for you.

Mi Lan,

you must take good care of yourself.

Don't let your departed loved ones worry about you.

Thank you, Mr. Li.

Then, you'd better get going.

I'll get back to work then.

Okay.

[Station Chief's Office]

You let someone escape right under your nose.

If Yun Hongshen didn't save you yesterday,

you wouldn't even be alive.

I'm sorry, Sir.

It was my negligence.

People were sent to ambush Yun Hongshen's house,

but we didn't catch the thief.

Instead, I lost several of my agents.

Yesterday's operation was a complete disaster.

It's because of my incompetence.

Please punish me, Sir.

I do want to punish you,

but who's going to work for me if I do?

However, Yun Hongshen

has indeed impressed me.

He even anticipated that the Japanese would

conduct a surprise raid on his house.

He's indeed a talent.

If such a talent falls into the enemy's hands,

it would be terrifying.

Let me tell you,

my focus on Yun Hongshen

is entirely because of your incompetence.

Learn from your mistakes and be brave.

Don't let me down again.

Understood.

Young Master,

you asked me to inquire about those cigars.

I've got some leads.

Go on.

Those high-end cigars are hard to come by.

There's only one supplier in the entire city.

It's the Lifeng Boutique Gallery at the Changsha Hotel.
