Fred turned 75 years old. That's a big deal for us.

Whole life, fred worked Harder than any man

I've ever met.

I was 9 years old when I picked Cotton down in south texas.

I think harry truman Was still president.

66 years later, And I still got that...

Adventure in me.

Fred's not the normal 75-year-old guy.

He's definitely stepping it up.

I found myself forgetting That fred's 75 years old.

75-year-olds...

What are 75-year-olds Doing right now?

They're the guys that has The little scooters in walmart.

Well, normally most 75-year-olds are sitting

in a diaper Or something.

Fred had a unique way Of marking his birthday.

How many 75-year-olds celebrate By going out and diving.

In some raging creek With their son?

I think it's awesome That I get to give fred,

Like, a kind of a gift... "Here."

It's keeping him young.

Whoo! Not bad.

It was fun digging with fred.

I got a lot of dirt moved today.

I have people always ask me,

"Well, fred, when are you Going to stop.

And you're going to start Doing regular things in life?"

And I said, "About the time I'm under about 6 feet of dirt."

Fred has that one leg of his, You know,

That he has to work on,

You know, Work harder to do things.

Let's picture a 75-year-old guy With a short leg.

Working and hiking.

It's crazy, man, just to think About what you got to go through.

To do normal, everyday stuff.

Old man's still at it, man.

The handicap with this leg, The way that I walk...

It was a driving force In my life.

That I was going to be Just as good as anybody else.

What the hell is that, fred?

Hey, that's my Climbing boots, man.

Put me a little brace on there.

Going to add another inch On that thing.

I'm almost as tall as I'm supposed to be.

Well, people look at me and say, "You got a big boot there."

Yep, that's my nickname... Big boot.

I don't think he's ever told me What actually happened.

I heard a lot of stories Here and there.

I used to mow grass around The top of a hill,

And I always went one direction For so long.

That my leg Just got shorter.

You know, I know he's mentioned How he got his big boot,

But I think It had to do with...

He said an alligator Got a hold of him.

I was a little kid.

We were on a picnic, And my mother and dad,

As young couples do, They got a little amorous.

They forgot about me, Being a little 2-year-old kid.

I crawl over by the bayou,

And this little 6-foot little Alligator grabbed a hold of me.

And if you believe that, I've got a couple more stories.

He laughs about them Every time, whatever it is.

I mean, he's got, like, A 7-inch or 8-inch short leg.

I went through a lot.

I mean, I went through a lot.

They didn't expect me to live.

In fact, the hospital personnel Basically,

I think, was hoping I would go ahead and die.

My leg was fractured.

I had a cast from hip to toe.

Actually, I had one picture.

I'm sitting with my brother.

So it would hide the cast With my foot behind him.

When it was wound up being set And everything,

It wound up being bent,

Twisted, crooked, and shorter,

But other than that, there Wasn't nothing wrong with it.

Nothing.

Fred ended up with his left leg.

A full 7 inches shorter Than his right.

Having one leg shorter Than the other gave me incentive.

To do very well at anything I tried to do,

Whatever it happened to be.

When I was teenager, I found out That I could swim like a fish.

I really enjoyed the water,

And it made me better Than other people.

Because I could outswim them,

And I got to tell you, That made me feel good.

I bought this little book For a dollar.

It said, "How to scuba dive,".

So I taught myself How to scuba dive.

That was the beginning of My commercial diving career.

Fred went on to run His own construction company.

And worked as a diver For 10 years.

On oil rigs And demolition projects.

In the gulf of mexico And the mighty mississippi.

If I was going to go Do something,

I had to do it better Than the next guy.

It basically just gave you A sense of my work ethic,

And lots of people Complained about that.

And the real story Behind fred's big boot.

When I was about 2 years old, I had this accident,

And what happened is That nobody will know...

Because I'm not Going to tell you.

Anybody that's ever worked With their father or son.

Knows that there's history, And there's a power struggle.

It's difficult working Under dustin.

I don't mind working Side by side with dustin.

I don't like working Under dustin.

How about you coming up With a better solution.

Fred always disagreed With where I was digging,

But I'm in charge.

When dustin left The mine site to get fuel,

Fred took his chance To change the mining plan.

Fred tried to run a mutiny.

He decided he was in charge.

As to what I think could Possibly happen down there.

It wasn't a mutiny.

It was to question Certain things,

Particularly in the face Of facts.

We were not getting gold.

Nobody wants to take Any advice from an old man.

But what do you want us to do?

I would like you to just Move downstream.

I absolutely think there is Some gold up in that crack,

But I think there's 100 times More 20 feet downstream.

With all due respect, fred, I got to do what dustin wants.

Like, we had no escape.

Basically I wanted them To start.

Making some decisions On their own.

Instead of just blindly Following what dustin is doing.

Fred wanted to change Everything,

And things got a little heated.

We're in the middle of, "Do as fred wants.

He hit my nerve when he told us To grow some balls.

What I really had to change Is how I deal with fred.

Without working with fred.

To double their chances.

Of getting down to bedrock gold,

The dakota boys plan To run two dredges.

Fred hired a pair Of greenhorns...

I heard a rumor they call You the nerd.

I mean, you know, you do Computers and stuff, right?

I couldn't believe That first day.

That fred introduced me.

As the geek or computer nerd Or something like that.

Rich runs his Family computer store,

But also served 5 years In the army as a mechanic.

He was a certified welder At one time,

And he worked On diesel mechanic.

I said, "Wow, that's The kind of guy I need."

They truly had a swiss army Knife, not just a computer geek,

And then I also dredged For about 5 years.

Before I went to alaska.

- I love dredging for gold. - Yeah.

Fred also brought in A second crew member,

Veteran gold miner Casey morgan,

Relocated from arizona For the summer.

I'm a gold hound.

I can sniff out gold Really well.

I don't miss it.

I knew casey From several years back.

I figured that casey had some Ability as far as dredging.

He had shown me a few places That he went out and dredged.

I've been a dredger in arizona For over 10 years.

When I saw that casey Was bigger than me,

I was very happy about that.

This is the real deal.

This is dangerous, And what is it you've done?

I've done just about every type Of mining there is for gold.

I will get you to the bottom Of that hole and find.

That gold you're looking for.

I'll get me down Into that hole.

He was pretty full of himself.

I didn't know these guys at all Before the season started,

Didn't know What they were bringing.

I needed rich and casey To work for me,

Put our operation and make Our operation a success.

The greenhorns were Put to the test.

When the dakota boys Had to chopper in fuel.

To keep their season alive.

I'm going to need some help Unloading.

That particular morning, Casey and I,

We load our gear Up into the atv.

All packed and ready to go Get down there and help fred.

That was the plan.

In alaska's backcountry,

The treacherous journey To the heli load site.

Is a 2 1/2 mile Atv trail over a mountain.

We depend on those helicopters.

We had to be there At least 15 minutes prior.

I expected them to be there.

They should have been here A half hour, 45 minutes ago.

To help me Get the barrels off.

So I start up, drive all the way Up the mountain,

Come down the backside, Get out of the atv,

And realize that The back hatch wasn't closed.

All of our 's gone.

Every possession of mine In alaska.

When I was up there was Strung out over the mountain.

We ran back up the mountain,

And we find our crap Scattered all over the road.

Thank god no grizzly bears Got it.

We got a helicopter. It's costing me $2,500 an hour,

And I can't sit And talk for a second.

Where in the hell are they at?

I mean, these two guys, Rich and casey,

Were brand-new on the job site, And then they don't show up?

Fred, we are on site and ready.

So far, carlos is The only one here.

Carlos said that they lost Half their gear.

Coming down the mountain.

They'll just be spending Like crazy.

When you screw up big like that, We screwed up big.

Anyway, they caught hell For that.

The bears didn't get Hold of the credit cards,

But they were a constant Threat to the crew.

It seems like everything Out there at mckinley creek.

Wanted to hurt you Or kill you.

Those dang bears, man.

There were, like, dang Fricking stray dogs, man.

They wouldn't leave us alone.

Hey, hey, bear!

- It's coming back. - No, there he is.

This is the last frontier, man. It's wild.

We got rubber bullets In this thing.

The last thing we want to do Is kill that bear,

But we definitely got to Scare it away from here.

I respect the animal.

I love animals, but I've got No problem putting them.

Into salami sticks too.

Try to think like a bear.

We just moved into his backyard.

He thinks he smells food.

He's out in the wilderness, And he is hungry.

Where would you be? Right here where the food is at.

He's just a bear, And we're smarter than him.

We'll outthink him, And we don't have to kill him.

Get used to him being around. He's going to test us every day.

He was almost, like, Stalking us.

I mean, he walked in behind us Coming in on the trails.

The bears also ransack The miners' camp...

Five times.

I had the feeling a bear would Just take a single nail.

And just like this into my tent And just eat me alive.

I had that fear every night.

You're sleeping with a gun On your side.

There's pissed-off black bears, Pissed-off grizzly bears.

You become bear poop.

To this day, my little girl Doesn't have a teddy bear, man,

Because I'm just tired Of bears, you know?

This season, My first dive.

That first taste Of mckinley cold.

It was good.

Yeah, it came to an end, man, Real quick, brother.

It came to an end, And it fricking...

Jeez, man.

It just shattered my whole Fricking world right there.

This season,

Dustin brought in A brand-new dredge.

To help the dakota boys Get down to the gold.

Never in my wildest dreams Did I think that somebody.

It was basically a first-time Experience for dustin.

To ever have somebody Get hurt on his job like that.

It freaked me out.

I went to a place that I've Never been out here before.

Like, my brain just snapped.

Like, I thought I damn near Killed a person,

Is what it felt like.

This is going to be with me For the rest of my life.

Look at that.

That's a third nipple Right there, dude.

That's going to remind me Every day, man.

If you're going to do this, If you're going to keep on.

Doing this stuff, We need this, man.

But at the same time, We miss you so much.

I wasn't going to fail twice.

When we made it back down To 15 feet, we thought,

"Okay. We're there. We have arrived. We're now...

We're going to crush this thing. We made it down to 15 feet."

Not the case. Not the case at all.

At mckinley creek, The chase for bedrock gold.

Pushed the divers To uncharted depths.

So I've got about 15 feet Right there,

And it still feels Gravelly on the bottom,

Doesn't feel like bedrock yet.

15 feet.

I'm at 15, and I bet I still got 5 feet to go.

You know what that means For the hole.

That's terrifying.

Just the overall Situation there,

It was really getting serious.

Right here, this ceiling Is about 15 feet.

That's how deep we were.

That is a long way up there.

I'm not one for giving up, So I do know.

That I'm going to try to get Through it, but at what risk?

How long do I have?

How dangerous do I let it get?

Every time you go there, There's a chance of dying now.

That water scared the hell Out of me, man.

It scared the crap out of me.

Super fricking dangerous Down there.

It's kind of the places Nightmares are made of.

Fricking valley of death.

It's so hard for me to explain What it feels like to be down.

At the bottom of that hole.

We were in this narrow, Narrow trench about that deep.

That just kept going down, Down, down, down,

With giant rocks overhead.

Every single day There was a landslide.

Right now everybody's Waiting for dustin.

To make that call That it's unsafe.

It became more and more Dangerous.

Things had to change.

The danger Of the dive hole.

Forced dustin to make A tough decision.

All right, guys, I know it's not Our turn to dive,

But fred and I Are going to go down.

Because it's just getting Too dangerous.

It's worth the risk for fred And I, but not so much you guys.

This is not a manly thing.

I don't have a family Or children.

Or any of that stuff To take care of,

So I feel comfortable going down There and risking my life.

- This is real danger. - Yeah.

If you're going to have Two people down there.

On the crew That are going to die,

Fred can handle himself,

And then there's me, The guy in charge.

I've got too much Into this, man.

I'm willing to die for it.

Ain't no amount of gold Worth dying for.

Yeah, well, I wish I could say that to my brain.

I didn't want anybody else Going in there.

Besides either dustin or myself.

I still believe.

That I could find so much gold,

It would have just Changed my entire life.

The thought that we would Stop 1 or 2 feet.

From the very bottom.

Just kept us moving.

Fred and dustin Took it upon themselves.

To do the most dangerous dive Of this season.

I didn't think we were going To be able to do it,

And the more vertical we went, The more scary it got,

But the closer we got. It just kept going.

We just kept thinking The bedrock was right there,

And we kept going And going and going.

The bedrock did show up, But, boy,

Was it a lot deeper Than we thought.

22 feet Is where we found bedrock.

Yee-hee-hee!

When we hit bedrock, It was literally,

"Got it. We got it," you know.

It tried twice on us To kill us.

But I'm the one that got down to The bedrock first, not dustin.

It's amazing that we got down To bedrock.

There was times when everyone Doubted me except for fred.

Fred's the one That'll stand by your side,

As much as we fight.

As much crazy As he does,

Fred's going to be the one To stand by me.

And just keep digging.

What y'all didn't see In the show is I think

I was guided by a higher power To where the gold was.

Wes brings in This guy and says,

"This is my psychic buddy, Dennis."

Well, you know I've told you Many times about my guide, ho.

Yep. And how we met.

We met through, of all things, A ouija board.

Um...

That was new.

Ho has been my guide For 1,350 years.

They lived together At one time in a past life.

His guide on the other side Watches over him.

And sounds him messages Somehow.

He's not going to lead us Anyplace that it's not right.

A lot of people might think It's strange to use a psychic.

To try to find gold, But look, we're gambling anyway.

We're doing something That's crazy,

So what's a little more crazy?

I think you guys were Right in here,

But if you can get To that spot upstream...

You're going to hit Some gold there.

What's crazy is he told me About a tree,

So we get up there, And I'm looking everywhere,

And I'm thinking, "A tree. I don't see a tree."

Well, when we started moving Rocks from upstream, boom,

Here appears this tree Out of the water.

He said, "The signal that I'm Getting from my guides",

Further up the creek, I feel Like there's 10,000 ounces."

Well, at first, I thought he was joking.

I'm telling you, It's under the tree!

There ain't nowhere else To go, man.

Well,. Let's keep moving forward.

So I hear wes Just stomping around.

"You guys are idiots If you don't go upstream!

Dennis said it's by the tree."

We can't stop.

We just need to go up and work Our way underneath that tree.

If wes wants to go out there And spend his money.

And dig that damn hole To get down to that spot,

He's welcome to it.

I think he kind of Convinced everybody.

That he's the real deal.

Okay, I'll call it.

Phony bologna.

He asked if I was like fred, If we had the same...

I'd say we have a few Characteristics,

Like work ethic. Yeah.

We make some of the same Laughs and noises.

We have picked up On each other's laughs.

But I think it ends there.

Whether dustin and I Are the same personality or not,

That's for Other people to judge.

I'm no psychiatrist, But they're just the same.

There was no reason in my head To even clean the thing out.

- We're gonna have boulders. - Dustin, look at this, bud.

When have you ever Basically done a test hole...

- yeah. - And seen that kind of gold?

- My. - Pretty nice?

There's probably an ounce, ounce And a half of gold here maybe.

Six fricking hours Of diving, dude.

- Yeah. - -holy.

- Yeah. - Wow.

Not just a little bit,

But quite a bit of gold In 6 hours.

Tell you what, the potential For down in that hole.

Could be enormous.

But fred's had enough Having his son for a boss.
