I think that turning point was when ,
by Wednesday, I think,

we had 40, 000 or 50, 000 kids
sitting in the field .

So, we'd sold 1 20, 000 tickets in advance,

and if that's any indication
of what's coming ,

we knew we were well over
the 200, 000 we'd planned on .

I think the turning point, actually,

for the whole thing was
when it got near to the festival ,

and people then started to break down
the fences that they'd put up,

and they had to declare it a free festival.

MONCK ON PA:
It's a free concert from now on.

CHURCHILL: I think the first time I realized
something was going on was,

you could only get in by helicopter.

And I suddenly thought, "What's this?"
And then you flew over the audience.

It was just amazing to see.

U p until that point, it was
just another gig , another festival .

Around this period ,
there were a lot of festivals going on ,

and all the groups were traveling
to these festivals, you know,

and you'd see everybody
at all the festivals.

It was like a bunch of gypsies
going around at the time, so,

actually, when Woodstock happened,

it was another festival that was going on.

Nobody knew that it would be

the size or the volume ofpeople
that it was.

They were all on pot.

-I NTERVI EWER: Well , whatever it is. . .
-It never should have happened .

If pot makes them happy and no trouble,
maybe we ought to put

-all the adults on pot.
-How about the morals?

You want a 1 5-year-old girl
sleeping in the field in a tent?

What are you , out of your mind?
It never should have happened .

Do you feel bad about the kids
who were killed in Vietnam?

-This has nothing to do with Vietnam .
-That's the same thing .

Nothing at all to do with it.
There's no comparison .

I thought that this was going to
sum up the generation ,

that it had an opportunity to do that.

Even when it was only gonna be 50, 000
or 1 00, 000 people that came there,

I still thought, "Wow!

"Being on a farm, going back to land,

"Woodstock, you know, all this mix

"and these great musicians who were
singing political songs, you know."

Anyway, this is an organizing song,

and I was happy to find out

that after David had been in jail
for two and a half weeks,

he already had a very,
very good hunger strike going

with 42 federal prisoners,
none of whom were draft people, so...

WADLEIGH: These were not
just pop groups.

I'm very happy to say

we think the people of this country
should be proud of these kids.

Notwithstanding the way they dress
or the way they wear their hair,

that's their own personal business.

But their inner workings,
their inner selves,

their self-demeanor cannot be questioned.

They can 't be questioned
as good American citizens.

That's kind of surprising
coming from a cop.

I'm not a cop. I'm a Chief of Police.

Festivals happened
and big shows happened

and corporate rock happened,
but that was a special time.

Nobody got rich at Woodstock. Nobody.
That's cool.
