I n 1 969, I was asked to go and record Woodstock.

Live recording was always a challenge. Certainly in those days.

And to this day, you know, we've not been able to recapture...

...some of the incidences that occurred on the first song .

The first song was almost a trial by fire.

Because we had no idea where anything was.

And so here we are in the year 2008...

...and we're able to do stuff with modern technology...

...and the old analog technology that was inconceivable 1 0 years ago.

We should check out the guiro track.

-I think maybe you wanna Iook at that first. -Okay. All right. AII right.

CARABELLO: I'm here because I was a member of Santana when we played at Woodstock.

I got a call from Eddie Kramer, my old friend , and I haven't heard from him in almost 40 years.

So, you can tell there's a little bit of Carlos' guitar in there.

-That's what we're trying-- Yeah . -It's bleeding .

So we need to fix this track, and make that sound a Iittle bit better.

Michael Shrieve also called me. The drummer that was in Santana...

...said that there was some corrections to be made on it.

I said I was available. I would Iove to.

...in the Santana band at Woodstock.

So I'm here in my father's place...

...with much respect to him and to Michael .

It's just so exciting because the public gets to hear a song ...

...that would never have made the Iight of day.

With all of the technology that we can bring to bear...

...with the artist, the original artist for the most part...

...contributing their talents today, almost 40 years later.

CARABELLO: It's called a guiro, and it's a scratcher. You'II hear it on the track.

It wasn't heard very well because Carlos' guitar got picked up in my conga-drum mic.

So we had to do it all over again , and I was more than happy to come in and restore it.

KRAMER: With Woodstock, there has definitely been some fixes done.

And I think it's important that people know that we had to go in and do these things...

...in order to make the performance complete.
