=Episode 5=

Tea, General.

Thank you.

Danqing.

How dare you!

I'm sorry. The tea was too hot.

I didn't grip it firmly. It was an accident. Are you alright?

Yes, it's okay.

Thank heavens.

But it is also a warning to you.

Don't boss people around.

Having a woman you just met serve you tea may cause you injury.

How dare you say that to the general?

I'm telling the truth.

Your name sounds like that of a dashing young man.

But who would have thought you turned out to be flippant?

Danqing, stop it.

I was rude just now. Miss Shen, I hope you can forgive me.

Not that serious.

But please leave after finishing this cup of tea.

After all, this small place is not big enough for you.

Thanks for your advice, Miss Shen.

But I have a feeling that we will meet again.

I hope to leave a good impression on you next time.

Zishan, please stay.

General Xu, my sister didn't know any better.

She's too young. I'm sorry for that.

If you treat me as a general, your sister just committed disobedience.

But if you call me Chengfeng,

your sister was just joking with me earlier.

Alright, Chengfeng.

That's right.

Didn't you say that you and Mr. Shen were old acquaintances?

Why do you seem so estranged?

Zishan and I spent years studying together,

but that was in our youth.

Do you really believe it wasn't an inside job?

Zishan is gentle, generous and very righteous.

I've said before he would not bring shame to his own family.

He may not, but that girl might.

She took the opportunity to splash water on you.

And what are the odds?

They were robbed by a female bandit leaving traces back to them.

In my opinion, Shen Danqing must be involved.

I don't know much about Zishan's sister.

But I won't forget my duty.

Since I've been tasked with investigating this matter,

I will surely do it impartially.

Tianhao, have people watch the Shen family closely,

especially Miss Shen.

Inform me immediately of any unusual activity.

Yes, sir.

Bear with it. I'm going to set your bone.

All done. Nothing serious.

I'll go get the bone-setting ointment for you.

Many thanks, Mr. Miao.

Xu Chengfeng is meticulous and hard to convince.

Think about it. Are there any holes?

I'm not sure.

It's already lucky to have been let off by him today.

For safety's sake, put off your revenge for now.

You're his target now. He won't give up easily.

I do have a way to divert his attention.

What way?

Please help me spread the word.

(Prosperity) General, you're going to the yamen.

It's about time to go.

How are things in the Shen Mansion?

Nothing unusual since we left.

Miss Shen hasn't even left the house.

Really? Keep a close watch.

General, there's trouble! Go take a look at the front gate.

Tianhao, why is it such a strong scent?

Come.

What's going on?

I don't know.

Why are there so many women? Can we even get out?

We must get out. Come.

The general is enamored with the scent of a woman,

especially the Western Regions type?

Are you sure the word got out from the General's Mansion?

That's what everyone is saying outside.

I hear quite a few women have already gone to his mansion

to get a head start.

The Western Regions type.

The last box of this scented powder from the Western Regions.

Go prepare a carriage. I'm going to his mansion.

Yes.

Not bad, young man. Quite handsome, aren't you?

You can't compare to me,

but you're adequate to deceive those ladies at the entrance.

In a moment, you'll walk out to lead them away.

But we don't look alike.

Stop jabbering and put this on. Act tough.

You're tougher than me. This won't do.

How can you know without trying?

I'm scared.

Quit dawdling. Let's go. You'll walk out like this in a moment.

- General. - I'll be right behind you.

- General Xu. - General Xu.

General Xu, we have been waiting for you for a long time.

Be careful.

(This scent.)

Make way. Let me have a look.

Make way.

Everyone, stop.

General Xu.

- General Xu. - General Xu.

What's the matter?

This scent is very familiar. Someone has applied special powder.

Each of these women has applied powder.

Are you planning to find the woman by her scent?

General Xu.

Miss Shuangshuang, what a coincidence.

General, you still remember me?

I would like to invite you to my residence for a chat.

What do you say?

Of course, my pleasure.

Please.

- Shuixian, wait here. - No shoving.

Make way. Didn't you hear the general invited me to his mansion?

Get out of my way and go back.

No point in waiting here.

Is there something on my face?

Why are you staring straight at me?

You're making me shy.

I'm curious about you.

What are you doing, General?

The scent on you is very unique.

Perhaps that's because the powder I applied is one of a kind.

Is the powder exclusive to you?

(It seems the rumors are true.)

(He has finally taken a fancy to me.)

(How can I let him go to others?)

Of course. I made it personally to match my own temperament.

I specially added the Dai flowers from the Western Regions.

There's only this one in the city.

Are you telling the truth?

Of course. Are you doubting me?

I am not.

I'm just so eager to find the person who matches this scent.

You've only met me a few times,

and you're already so obsessed with me?

Since this scent belongs only to you,

you are the one I am looking for.

General, if you intend to propose marriage, please choose a date soon.

I'll be waiting at home for you.

I'm afraid you can't return home today.

General, I was raised in a strict home.

No matter how eager you are, the formal betrothal process is a must.

Guards, Luo Shuangshuang has colluded with bandits to plunder food.

Take this disorderly woman into custody.

A proposal? Arrest, I'd say. Let's go.

(General's Mansion) (General, I'm wronged.)

How could I possibly conspire with bandits to steal food? I'm so rich.

I just heard you liked

the fragrance of Western Regions on a woman,

so I applied the powder, trying to lure you.

Must a woman who dresses to please her love be put into prison?

Stop pretending to be innocent.

I advise you to confess early to avoid physical torment.

Tell the guards to keep a close eye on her.

Yes.

General, I'm innocent.

Sir, I am the maid of Miss Shuangshuang.

General Xu invited her to his mansion, and it has been several hours.

May I ask when she'll come out?

Luo Shuangshuang colluded with bandits to seize food.

She has already been imprisoned.

You did it, right?

Why would Xu Chengfeng believe she is a bandit and arrest her?

When I was being chased by General Xu,

I threw a handful of scented powder at him to escape.

The powder has a distinctive scent.

And there's little of it.

The last box just so happened to be bought by her.

So you spread the word that he liked

the scent of the Western Regions type to set up Luo Shuangshuang

and divert his attention.

That was just a temporary solution.

How could Luo Shuangshuang be so foolish as to rob her own family's food?

General Xu will soon figure it out.

So what are your plans next?

I will find the right time to convince him of my innocence.

But before that, I'll let Luo Shuangshuang suffer for a while

as payback for falsely accusing me of killing my father.

Now she's going to taste the bitterness of being wronged.

(Pawnshop) Please take care.

The Luos' carriage.

You can go back. I'll go check it out.

(Pawnshop)

What good stuff do you have?

Miss Shen.

I've kept all the good stuff for you.

Wait. I just saw the Luo family's carriage leave.

What were they pawning off?

Here. Just some trinkets.

Please wait a moment. I'll go get you some interesting and rare items.

(It's Xuepian fabric.)

(That's right. This is what Luo Shuangshuang was wearing)

(when she wanted to kill me in the fire.)

(The torn spots match, and there is a hole in the right shoulder.)

(But Luo Shuangshuang cares about her looks.)

(Even if a piece of clothing comes unsewn, she'd just throw it away.)

(Why is there a patch on it?)

(And why does the stitching look so familiar?)

(Owner, Luo Xue'er)

(Luo Xue'er.)

(How could it be you?)

(Prison)

Stop!

Stay away!

Who are you?

I have something to ask you. If you want to live, tell me the truth.

Okay.

Half a year ago, you bought all the Xuepian fabric in a cloth shop

and made a set of clothes. Is it true?

Half a year. Y-Y-Yes.

Is it true that you've been wearing them?

After the clothes were made,

I tried them on and thought they looked ugly, so I gave them away.

To whom?

Why would I know? Who are you exactly?

What is this? What are you doing?

These poisonous bees are from the Western Regions.

After being stung by them, your body will swell and fester.

And you will be left with ugly scars for life. Are you going to tell me?

Please. Let me think.

It was Xue'er. Yes. I gave it to my sister Xue'er.

You're lying. It can't be her.

It seems you want to try it? Are you gonna tell me or not?

I am not lying.

I'm telling the truth, I swear.

My mother gave all the clothes I didn't want to Xue'er.

What about Luo Jida? Was it you who killed him?

It was not me. It was that wench Luo Ailian.

I didn't do anything. Get it away.

Ailian, today is your birthday.

(Luo Ailian's Memorial Tablet) I've come to see you.

I didn't want to harm you, but I had no choice.

I'm not the same as you. I am not our father's biological child.

You probably didn't know about this.

I am the child my mother had with her ex-husband.

My mother hated her past, so she pushed me away and ignored me.

I had no choice but to lower myself and try to please you and father.

But what can be changed even if I'm humbled to the dust?

He only thought of me when he needed a ghost bride.

Why me?

Please, Father. Don't make me go through with the ghost marriage.

I'm begging you.

- Xue'er, get up. - I beg you.

Xue'er, listen to me. I've arranged everything.

Is it because I'm not your biological daughter?

But I have nothing.

I put the fragrant powder in Shuangshuang's drawer to frame her.

But I never saw this coming, Ailian.

You were arrested as the murderer.

Later, I accidentally found Mother's string bag.

I wanted to use General Xu to get rid of her and Shuangshuang.

But she almost caught me.

Anyway, I will succeed sooner or later.

Aside from you, no one in the Luo family is my opponent.

Right, Shuangshuang committed something and was taken away by General Xu.

I thought I would secure a peaceful and wealthy life.

Shuangshuang is so delicate. How will she endure life in jail?

I finally reunite with my daughter,

hoping to make up for the years of neglect.

Yet she's been thrown into jail.

Madam, Master Jizhou.

When I passed by the General's Mansion on my way back,

I heard that bees somehow got into the prison cell

and stung Miss Shuangshuang.

Her face swelled up as big as a lantern.

- What? - What?

Shuangshuang.

Madam.

How is Luo Shuangshuang?

The doctor said she's fine.

She's just frightened and talking nonsense.

Send someone to take good care of her.

When Luo Shuangshuang was complaining,

she said she heard rumors that I liked the fragrance from the Western Regions,

so she came to woo me with the fragrance.

I guess the female bandit used Luo Shuangshuang as a scapegoat.

The bandit chose her, which means they have issues.

So you intentionally imprisoned Luo Shuangshuang

to use her as bait

and make the female bandit take the next step.

General, I carefully inspected the area as per your orders

and found a dried footprint outside the prison cell.

Judging by the size of the footprint, it should be a pair of women's shoes.

Perhaps it was left by that female bandit.

The pattern on the sole is uncommon.

You despised me for being a concubine, trying to flatter the trueborn daughter.

But if I hadn't gained her trust,

I planned it all for the three of us.

Alright. You tell me.

You said the three of us?

Why didn't you hand over the string bag to me immediately after finding it?

Why would you find General Xu?

Mother, I admit I made a mistake.

Father and Luo Ailian passed away, and you don't like me.

I didn't know how to protect myself in this house in the future.

Just in case one day you abandon me,

I keep the string bag as a precaution.

As a precaution? I think you wanted to expose me.

No, Mother, I did it just to protect myself.

I never thought of handing over the string bag.

I didn't know General Xu would appear at the corner gate that day.

Maybe I looked timid,

so he wanted to pry something out of me.

Mother, you and Shuangshuang are my loved ones and reliance.
