Original subtitles

You're about to be let in on the most highly classified data America holds.

We have a device that can allow us to send one human being back in time.

Seven days.

Timothy, Timothy.

Oh, oh, morning Jenny.

They're coming closer.

They ain't coming closer, Jim.

There's just a whole lot more of them today.

It was almost four years ago when this man,

counter-culture theologian Christopher Bass,

left the San Francisco street in a ship with a small number... You good, Carla?

At least you can't see 53 days of mosquito bites.

But this religious group hasn't yet found the promised land.

Instead, the government has denied Bass's claim that the group constitutes a church

and has demanded they pay taxes.

The government will now spend 10 million dollars to collect 8,000 from these people.

Christopher Bass continues to refuse to pay any taxes of any kind.

Good morning, good morning, good morning.

Joy comes in the morning.

What a beautiful day to be a child of God.

How are you feeling today?

No more morning sickness?

Hey, Isaac, how's that hand?

I've learned not to stick it anywhere near that tractor fan, that's for sure.

Oh, Kimberly, are you still having nightmares?

I think you exercise them.

Oh, I may be many things, but an exorcist is not one of them.

And here, oh, hey, here are our new members, the McMahons.

Now, how was your ride in? Okay?

All right.

Not great.

What was wrong?

We weren't expecting so many...

Guns out there.

Now, listen, there's nothing to be afraid of, right?

You're in God's hands now, and his word promises that he will watch over us.

Okay?

Oh, Parker, get your dead ass up.

Valor needs you in the sphere for instrument testing.

Oh, God, Ramsey, what time is it?

It's time for you to get up.

Comb your hair.

Just one more minute.

Is that what the gunshot confirmed?

That's affirmative, sir. The surface is uncoiled.

Execute orders. Move at will. Big dog out.

They're coming! They're everywhere! They're right outside!

Give me a life feed. Move it! Move it!

All right, everybody, don't be afraid.

God is our rock and our defense.

It looks as though he's surrendering.

They blew it up. They have blown up the farmhouse. Did you see that?

World Human Rights Conference ended as several

nations' representatives left in protest.

of what they termed the U.S.'s own flagrant human rights violations.

It's evidenced by the federal siege in Big Fork, Idaho.

Sorry to get you all out of bed this time of night.

Something tells me we're here because of what we see on TV.

The federal assault at Big Fork led to the deaths of 61 people.

This, in turn, caused the President's Human Rights Conference to break apart.

Well, that conference was doomed from the start.

Arabs sitting across from Israelis and Pakistanis

with Indians and Afghanis with Russians.

It's a miracle it didn't turn into a barroom brawl the minute they started.

That conference was the result of years of careful negotiation, Nate. It was a coup.

The cause of human rights may have advanced the world

over for many years to come, but now it's just a memory.

And for America and for our President, a profoundly embarrassing one.

So are we going to backstep to prevent the Big Fork incident?

That should be simple enough. All we've got to do is,

what, sit on the feds until the conference adjourns?

Maybe more complex than that, Greg.

How so?

The ATF commander on site claims that the explosives were ignited by the cultists.

The cult's sole survivor says the opposite. The

federal officers said and detonated the charge.

Oh, please. What, now we're listening to cult wackos?

I know Bill Marcour. He's the agent in charge

there. He's a total pro. Impeccable record.

I'd vouch for him all the way.

No, that makes me comfortable.

People, the point is we're not sure what happened in Big Fork,

and until we are, a backstep could prove ineffective.

Donovan, Ramsey, Olga and Parker, you're going

to Idaho now while the evidence is still fresh.

Your mission is to find out exactly who did what to whom.

Then get back here so that a backstep can be made.

In the 53 days and nights of this assignment, I got to know Christopher Bass.

I found him to be a fascinating, intelligent and charismatic man.

Now, did he blow up his own compound, killing

not only himself, but 60 of his followers?

Or did the ATF force an end to what had become

a frustrating and embarrassing situation?

Well, one thing is certain.

The world is waiting for an answer.

Signing off live from Big Fork, Idaho, this is Carla Boyles, CZN News.

Bass was a volatile, suicidal, egomaniac.

Kicked out of his own church in San Francisco when they

discovered he was harboring fugitives and children.

That's when he came here, and everything he touched went to hell.

If he was so volatile, why didn't you anticipate that

he may have had explosives? You knew he was armed.

Every corner of a snake, somebody's gonna get bit.

I'm just glad it wasn't my people.

And the children that were in there?

The fact that children were in that place breaks my heart.

These look like mortar craters to me.

Well, we did use a little percussive ordnance to distract them during the assault.

Lookie here. The explosions that killed people

in that farmhouse came from that farmhouse.

Son of a bitch!

Broke a damn tooth.

You all right to drive?

Uh, yeah.

I can take these bumpy roads at 100 for you.

Oh, God. I'm just trying to help.

Donovan, you and Dr. Bukovic are in charge while I'm gone.

Just keep an eye on Parker, all right?

Hang in there, buddy. He'll be back chewing those ice cubes in no time.

What was that?

Well, the rumor is they're NSA.

Well, I smell news.

You smell news?

So, where are we gonna eat?

Well, you can count me out. I'm hooking up with a little ATF agent I ran into.

Oh. Well, I saw a place right across from the motel.

They also have karaoke there.

What? You got something against singing?

Oh, God.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. You're beautiful. I love you, I love you.

Given that I'm still in the building, uh, any more special requests?

No, please. Three Elvis songs in a row is quite enough, thank you.

Hound Dog.

Concertifying music.

Come on. It's late. We have an early start tomorrow.

Come on. It's not that late. It's still dark out.

I'm leaving.

One more. Come on, Olga.

I'm leaving.

Please.

Goodbye, Mr. Parker.

Hey, while you're singing, can I buy you a drink?

Yeah, scotch.

Got it.

I figure if there's anything left of your liver when you die,

that's a waste of a perfectly good liver.

Amen.

Amen.

Boy, I know where I saw you.

Oh, yeah? Where?

Yeah.

What?

Weren't you, um, you know, picking through the rubble

with the investigators at the, at the farmhouse?

Maybe.

What are you guys looking for?

I can't tell you that. If I did, I'd...

What, you'd have to kill me?

Exactly, and I didn't want to do that. You're, you're nice.

Oh, thank you.

You're welcome.

So what do you do, Frank?

Oh, a little bit of this, a little bit of that, a little bit of everything, really.

Really?

What am I going to have to do to get a real conversation out of you?

Last call. You want anything?

Yeah, I think we'll take the check.

It's hot in here. You want to get some, some air?

Okay.

Mr. Parker, we have to be at the airport in...

Good morning.

Nothing happened, you know. We just talked.

Really? About what?

Things. Relationships.

Relationships?

Yeah, I told her about you and me.

There is no you and me, Mr. Parker.

Then what are you getting so mad about?

What the hell?

What's the press doing at NNL? They're not supposed to know about this place.

No way.

What in the hell did you think you were doing, talking to that woman?

What woman?

Earlier today, Carla Boyles broadcast a special report.

on what used to be America's most highly kept secret, Operation Backstep.

She gave detailed information about our location,

the sphere, and the world's first crononaut, Frank B. Parker.

Wait a minute. I didn't tell Carla Boyles anything about...

But it's all hearsay. I mean, she has no proof, right?

When was the last time a reporter needed hard proof to get an investigation started?

So we'll do some damage control.

It's too late. The story's already on every network.

Washington is seething.

They've frozen all our activities until a full investigation can be implemented.

Sir, you got to believe something. There's no way I'd expose this operation,

no matter how many brain cells I killed.

I've decided to do something I never thought I'd do.

I'm ordering an immediate backstep without NSA approval.

You're going to Big Fork to save the Human Rights Summit

and stop the loss of human life at the Big Fork compound.

I don't have to tell you what else we need undone, Frank.

All guy... I have nothing to say.

Hey, Ballard, there's something I wanted to ask you about the stabilizers to the...

We're going to hurry this morning?

We've all got our work cut out for us, Mr. Parker.

Give my regards to Ms. Boyles the next time you see her.

Olga...

I wanted to ask you about the...

What do I have to do to make you and everyone else understand how sorry I am?

I'm not sure that you can, Mr. Parker.

I'm sorry.

T-minus 30.

Give me that.

Reactor at 100 percent.

In three, two, one... Engage!

Engage!

This is Conundrum. Give me Talmadge.

Where are you, Frank?

The Happy Wood Duck campground somewhere in Idaho.

You know the standoff in Big Fork?

Well, somebody's about to blink big time.

What do you mean?

I'll tell you in a sec. Is Olga there?

Yes, Mr. Parker. Are you all right?

Yeah, and thanks for asking.

Back from town, Ms. Boyles?

Your town makes emailing exciting.

You should learn to ball. My wife, she's a real good little bowler.

Frank Parker, this is Nathan Ramsey with the NSA.

Checked in with you yet?

Yes, sir.

Good. Tell them I'm here.

Hi. Carla Boyles, CZN News.

Nice to meet you.

What did I get the feeling you're trying to avoid me, Mr. Parker?

Just busy.

Come on. Before she can leave, can we find some time to talk?

Olga, there you are.

Mr. Parker!

Olga, this is Carla Boyles of CZN News.

Say hello, say goodbye. Sorry, we gotta go.

What was that all about?

What was what all about?

Frank, what we need is somebody inside.

Yeah, but how?

Yeah.

Wait a second.

Bass is expecting a married couple from Wisconsin

to show up here today and join the congregation.

Michael and Tina McMahon.

Now, he's never met them before, only corresponded by letter.

If you guys head him off, maybe Olga and I can go in their places.

What does intel say? Are they ex-junkies, hippies, what?

Just your average counterculture misfits.

Oh, that's good. Yoko and Loko.

Look, somebody's gotta find out who's gonna blow this place to hell.

Wait a minute. Don't I have a say here?

All you gotta do is act like we're married.

How married?

Just follow my lead, all right?

What do you mean, follow your lead? Why do I always have to follow your lead?

Because.

Sounds like you got it under control, Frank.

Sound married to me.

Yeah. Anyway, after you stop the McMahons, I want you to scope out the feds

and make sure the screw-up doesn't happen on their end.

Look, I'm telling you, Bill Markhor's not the kind

of guy who would let this happen on his watch.

Donovan, I gotta go.

Wait. I can't believe I'm doing this. I'm not from Wisconsin. I'm a physicist.

From Russia.

You'll be fine, honey. Come on.

Hi. I'm, uh, Michael McMahon, and this is my wife, Tina.

I think we're expected.

Hello!

Michael? Tina?

Welcome. Welcome.

Oh, thank you, Father.

Oh, call no man on Earth, Father. We have one father in heaven.

Call me Christopher.

I-I-I hope that the, uh, federal agents didn't give you too much trouble getting in.

Oh, well, they asked us questions, but, uh, even they said they had to let us in.

Your accent, where-where are you from?

Oh, oh, my-my wife's Russian.

She is? Well, uh, you-you never mentioned that in your correspondence.

I-I-I didn't think it mattered. It doesn't, does it?

No, of course not. Everyone's welcome here.

Tina. Now, that-that must be a very unique name for a woman born in Russia, isn't it?

That's a very good question. Um, actually, Stratina

Kolinsky is the name that my parents gave me.

Ah, Stratina, like Tsarina.

Tsarina.

So, come on in.

Talk about brave. Your kid gave his life for this.

Well, let's make sure it doesn't happen again.

Uh, I want to introduce to you Michael and Tina McMahon.

We're so happy you're here.

We're happy to be here.

Yes, we are. Um, we were thinking of, uh,

delaying until the situation outside was over,

but then we realized that it would be very, uh, cowardly.

Bless you, Tina. Bless you.

Let's give them a hug and make them feel at home.

Bless you, Michael.

Hello. Who's your friend?

This is Jenny.

Hello, Jennifer.

And you already met her brother, Timothy, there on the porch.

They've been with us a little over a year now.

Uh, they were living alone on the streets together before that.

So, why don't you unpack your things in the bedroom down the hall and, um...

Well, I wanted to make sure you got this. It's the,

uh, money we made from selling our possessions.

Oh, and I'll... Joseph will take care of that.

Don't you want to know how much is in there?

Well, whether it's $100 or $100,000, it doesn't matter.

I don't mean to be rude, but, um, what are you going to use it for?

For the essentials of life.

I'm afraid that the farm is not entirely self-sufficient,

yet we still have to bring some supplies in from the outside.

Well, the reason I ask is that, um...

Well, we heard rumors that you were buying guns and ammunition,

and Tina and I, we're pacifists, so...

Michael, I am so glad you asked that question because...

Aren't we glad that he asked that?

Because we have been so misrepresented by the media.

It's very clear. We are hunter-gatherers.

So, of course, we have arms, but we use the arms for our essential needs.

We use them for food and only food. As simple as that.

Now, you haven't heard that on the news, have you?

No.

So, how about you and Tina get settled,

and then I will give you the full tour of your new home.

Okay.

All right? Thank you.

Thank you.

Well, the room's clean.

So, did you believe what he said about the guns?

Curious.

You know, when I was a child in Russia,

I used to have to share a bed with two brothers and a sister.

This should be almost roomy for you then.

I expect you to behave like a gentleman, Mr. McMahon,

and you can start by getting off my bed.

That's no way to treat your husband.

You know what? I think we should take our own tour of this place.

What do you say?

Lead the way.

Gentlemen, I'm telling you, we have no special ordnance here.

Well, I'm sorry we even had to take your inventory here, Bill.

I mean, I think you've shown remarkable restraint for, what is it now, 53 days?

I mean, this is a big waste of time and money and manpower.

If it had been me, I'd have tear-gassed them my first week.

Well, we considered that option, but the Attorney General vetoed it.

Well, he'd probably ruin that little peacenik picnic

that the President's got going up at Camp Davis.

Right.

You wouldn't mind if Agent Ramsey and I had a look around for ourselves now, would you?

Go right ahead.

Well, we'll try not to make a nuisance of ourselves.

Howdy.

Doesn't seem like there's any basement or even a crawlspace.

Explosives could be planted under the roof, I guess.

You know what?

What?

I think these people are completely genuine.

I'm not so sure about Bass. Are you?

Well, he's a little off balance, but he's been through a lot lately.

I mean, these people must be living like their heads are on a chopping block.

Father Bass is waiting for you in the main room.

He wants to show you around, tell you what your duties will be.

Of course.

Oh, there you are!

Hey, I thought I'd lost you.

Oh, we were just admiring the garden.

You like the garden?

Very much so. It's beautiful.

For Timothy to stand there and face all those people

alone, he must be one of your most loyal subjects.

I'm not a king, Michael, so I don't have any subjects.

The Lord God rules here, you know that.

In fact, it was God who brought them here to me.

And now he's prepared to risk his life for you.

Well, we're all risking our lives for something, aren't we?

But none of us are going to die here.

I hope not.

No, God won't let that happen.

In fact, follow me.

Hello!

Hello, everybody!

Listen to the peacemakers.

We're under his protection now.

Well, it seems that the ATF is getting pretty fed up.

I hope they don't try and storm the farmhouse.

Well, what good would that do them?

The president is conducting a human rights summit at Camp David as we speak.

How would it look if the government seized our land,

denied our human rights?

The whole world is watching, Michael.

And God is as well.

Bless you!

See any dynamite in there, Captain?

No, but we did find these mortar rounds.

Big ones.

Not the surprising stun weapons you were talking about.

Who is this guy named?

Why does he keep looking at me like he knows something I don't?

Well, he's Captain Craig Donovan, Bill.

And he's just doing his job, as am I.

You also got mortar shells in that truck by the command tent.

What else you got laying around here?

Maybe you're too hard to tell me what you're really doing here.

Shall I go make a phone call?

Well, I'd be making that phone call if I were you.

I'll do just that.

All right.

Damn.

I broke a tooth.

Son of a bitch.

Hi, honey. How's it going?

Boy, I love gardening.

Oh, me too.

I can't believe they put us to work already.

Well, do you expect them to give us a two-week vacation and then put us to work?

That'd be nice, wouldn't it?

Did you see Bass in front of the media?

No.

The whole world's watching him, and he's loving it.

I don't know. I still get the feeling that he's sincere.

Thank you, Tina.

You know, I think they could use you in the kitchen.

Would you mind?

Oh, no. Not at all.

Thank you.

Bye, Michael.

Bye, honey.

You're a lucky man, Michael.

If that's really your name.

What do you mean?

You know, I've had a strange feeling about you

ever since you arrived, like you're my Judas.

Are you my Judas, Michael?

Sir, Charlie and Delta are in position.

Good. You tell them there'll be no firing until I give the word.

Excuse me, sir, but I just got word from the White

House that they want us to stand down a while.

Do you think it makes sense to have amateurs 3,000 miles away call shots around here?

No, sir, but... Neither do I.

So until I get orders to stand down from my direct superiors,

we're gonna stay our course. Is that understood?

Yes, sir.

Let him sleep a little bit longer.

Okay.

Why do those men hate us?

Oh, I don't think they hate us.

They probably want this to be over just as much as we do.

Then why don't they go home?

You know what?

I have to make some apple cider for tonight's campfire.

Will you help me make it?

I don't like apple cider.

You don't?

They hold the apples out in the barn.

There's lots of spiders out there.

Oh, I don't like spiders either. I saw some there yesterday.

But I don't remember seeing any apples.

They probably hid them.

They hide a lot of stuff out there.

Really? Like what?

Supplies and stuff.

Timothy says that's where they hold the money, too.

Jenny, what are you doing over there?

Nothing. Can I go outside?

No.

Go back to bed.

Go on, now.

Have you seen Tina?

Michael, I'm keeping everybody inside the house today.

There's a lot of tension in the air.

ATF agents have repositioned themselves closer to the house.

I told you they were starting to get fed up.

You got a phone?

Yeah, right over there.

Have you seen Tina?

Yeah, a little earlier. Why?

Find her for me, will you?

Yeah.

Ramsey.

Parker? What the hell are you doing?

You're gonna blow your cover.

Olga's missing, and I don't know where she is.

Relax. She's just gone into the barn.

Are you sure?

Yes, I'm sure, damn it.

Nothing's gonna happen on this end, Parker.

Well, you better make sure of that.

There are a lot of innocent people in here, Ramsey.

See, I knew you weren't really one of us.

If I were Christopher, I'd have never let you join our church.

You're gonna deny you were looking for the explosives, huh?

Well, you obviously weren't interested in the money.

It went right past the safe.

You know, I'm awful sorry I have to treat you like this,

but what am I supposed to dig you to tell Christopher?

Can't have that.

He has a big enough cross to bear, don't you think?

You wouldn't really blow up all these innocent people, would you, Joseph?

Well, why don't you take another step closer and find out, huh?

I thought they were your family.

Well, that's why I've been prepared.

To save the family from the indignity of losing everything we have together.

Christopher Bass will become a martyr.

You're not serving anyone by killing people.

Is that how you want to go down in history?

Come on, Joseph.

Where are the explosives?

They're underneath the floor in my bedroom.

Did he hurt you?

I tell you one thing.

He's no Christian.

Wait a second.

Nice work.

Thank you.

You're welcome.

What was that?

I thought I said gunfire hurt.

Affirmative, sir. The serpent's uncoiled.

Okay, let's get him.

Hey, what the hell are you doing?

It's still my operation, Ramsey.

Two of our agents are in there.

You better know how to duck.

Give me a life feed.

Move it! Move it!

Stop shooting! Everyone, stop shooting!

There are 150 heavily armed officers out there.

You need to give yourselves up.

If you fight back, you're all going to get killed.

What have you done with Joseph?

Easy, Jude. It's not me.

What do you mean?

This is not the way to help your people, Christopher.

You gave them new lives. Why would you want them destroyed?

What?

Get down!

You hanging out to this for them or for you?

For God!

Stop it! Stop it!

Stop it! Stop firing!

Everybody, stop firing! Stop it!

Cease fire! Cease fire!

Watch him.

We've accomplished too much here to have it end this way.

The Lord God gave us this place,

and in his infinite wisdom, he's taken it away from us.

No matter what happens from this moment on,

take the Holy Spirit with you out of this place,

and you'll never forget the lessons we've learned here.

Go ahead. Go on out.

God has delivered us from this trial.

Did it all go okay?

Yeah. He had the house rigged with explosives.

A true believer.

It's over. Big Dog is good.

He's got a weapon!

Don't shoot! Don't shoot!

It's cool!

Michael, why?

My work on this earth is done now.

No, it's far from done. You still have a lot to give.

My name's not Michael. It's Frank Parker. I'm with the NSA.

Come on. Come on.

You're with the NSA?

Yeah.

Thank you.

No need to thank me. That's my job. Come on.

Are they going to arrest us?

You and your brother didn't do anything wrong, Jenny. None of you did.

Living in a group on the farm is not illegal.

This is America.

Will they take Christopher to jail?

He may need some time to settle his taxes.

But he'll be back.

In the meantime, sometimes a leader is just the first person to step forward.

Maybe someone like you.

All right, everybody. Let's keep moving.

Good.

Make sure you take care of your brother, Jenny.

I will. See you.

Come on.

Hold up. Make way for the big dog.

Agent Mark ordered one of his own men to fire first and set off the assault.

Big dog's in big trouble, big time.

From all the reports we've been able to gather, serious progress is being made here

at the President's Human Rights Summit at Camp David.

The latest word is the participants are hammering out major compromises,

meeting each other halfway on many of the issues that need to be resolved.

It looks like the United States is once again playing a significant role.

in advancing the cause of world peace.

Agent Ramsey, I'm glad you're here. I want to talk to you.

Well, I don't talk to the press.

Just your dentist in Bigfork?

Excuse me?

People say a lot of interesting things under anesthesia.

But big blue spheres, time travel, never never land.

This is going to be the story of the century.

I'll be damned. It was you all along.

Look, I don't know what she's talking about.

I knew no matter how bent out of shape I got, I'd never spill those kind of beans.

Mr. Ramsey, what have you done?

Now wait a minute, Loose Lips. There may be a way to undo this.

What, another back step?

No.

From Studio 7 in Los Angeles, this is CZN News Magazine with Reba Daniels.

Good evening and welcome to this special edition of CZN News Magazine.

As many of you know, people across America have been highly anticipating

our exclusive interview with two United States government employees

who bravely have come forward because they believe the people have the right to know.

To know what?

Well, that highly secret government technology is being used routinely

to send a man back in time seven days.

CZN's Carla Boyles, who is live in our Las Vegas, Nevada studio.

Mr. Ramsey, Mr. Parker, welcome.

Now, I know that there are millions of people

out there who are waiting to hear your story.

Now, when did this time travel program first begin?

alien technology from the Roswell crash in 1947.

If I could just explain... Wait, excuse me. You are working with technology

that was recovered from a flying saucer that crashed to earth over 50 years ago?

Oh, yeah. It works really well.

They strapped me in this big chair and sent me off like a monkey.

That's cool. I get to go back and fix things.

Oh, fix things. Well, what kinds of things do you fix?

Well, let's see. The President of the United

States and the Vice President were assassinated and I went back and fixed that.

Well, our current President?

Yeah. And then there was this one time when the backstab caused me a split in two.

One good, one evil. He tried to kill me, that son of a... Okay, you know...

We have a responsibility to follow up on the

leads that we get here at CZN News Magazine.

Although sometimes we don't know where those leads will take us.

Next ahead, we have reports on... Who would have thought it would be so simple?

CZN News Magazine.
