My name is Gheorghe Costache.

I was born in 1959, on June 6th

I'm a part of a family of Lăutari

but I'm a musician.

In Romania, Lăutar means a man
who can't read the musical notes.

He plays by ear.

He has an ear for music.

This is the meaning of Lăutari.

The musician has culture
and did attend music schools.

He can read the notes

He's taught how to play classical,
cafe music or jazz.

We used to go to the park with the violin.

Gică couldn't help taking
the violin everywhere.

The violin was my biggest rival.

Wherever we went,
we went with the violin.

The violin used to go with us everywhere,
even to the movies or to the park.

Me to the right,
the violin to the left.

He would never separate from his violin.

The kids would separate
him from it in the end.

I had no childhood

as music does not allow you
to play with other children.

I used to study 3-4 hours a day,
sometimes 6.

At times I used to start at 9 pm
to finish by 5 am.

I didn't have time to go out
with other children.

I was a shy boy.
I was not at ease chatting with a girl.

I was not used to the surrounding world.

I had become a man devoted to music.

I'm from Glina, near Bucharest.

The village is inhabited only by Lăutari.

The first inhabitants of Glina
had been Gypsy slaves.

My ancestors were the first to settle here.

Later on Romanians came along as well.

The first free men after slavery
would settle in Glina.

They were Gypsies
who had worked for the landowners.

On their release, they were given lands.

They were just playing music.

Nothing else.

Others were making only spoons or pots.

The Roma were classed by trade.

At the time of Ceausescu, there was no difference
between Roma, Romanians and Hungarians.

That did not exist.

Everyone was equal.

Ceausescu sought equality.
There was no separatism during his time.

He gave work to the Gypsies.

He gave them what to eat.

Gypsy kids did not go
to school before.

Ceausescu enrolled them.

He dealt with the Roma
as much as with the Romanians.

All the Lăutari of the village would come
and play from 9 pm up to 2-3 am in the morning.

Competitions for the best musician

After 1990, in Glina,

we realized that we could no longer live
on music as we used before.

Many would abandon music
altogether and get hired.

The Lăutari ceased passing
on the music tradition to their children.

The majority of the youngsters would like to learn
a trade but even so they don't seem to make it.

What trades?
Salesmen? Cab drivers?

This is the nowadays in Romania.

When I met Mr Gigi,

Gică as I used to call him,

I worked for 4 years.
Almost 5.

While at the bus-stop
he used to tease me with beautiful words

and questions on mathematics
or chemistry, crap like that.

Little by little he would come over
to see me more and more often.

He would come to my house.

He used to recite the formula of water
and then keep asking me questions on chemistry.

And this is how it all started.

at about 7-8 am and sleep until 1-2 pm.

At 2 pm he would leave

That was his daily routine.

and not be Lăutari.

He wanted them to become
musicians and he did succeed.

for 3 or 4 more years,

I remember I was in the yard.

My daughter-in-law was pregnant.

a first name for their daughter.

At one moment,
I made a joke asking Gică

to take me to the historic center
of Bucharest and play Aida by Verdi.

At that moment my son Marius

In our family,

accordion or clarinet.

the jury chose me.

I signed the contract on the spot.

I signed for the city
of Weimar, in the GDR.

So I was waiting to leave.

and I was still waiting to leave.

I went to see the secretary.

by the director whose name I will never forget

but I prefer not to mention it.
