of true crime movies.

We’ll have true crime stories

each Thursday night this month.

Up next, set
against the backdrop

of New York’s sexually‐charged
singles scene in the 1970s,

this is "Looking
for Mr. Goodbar"

released by Paramount in 1977.

This harrowing film written
and directed by Richard Brooks

marked a dramatic departure
for its star Diane Keaton,

who earlier in ’77
charmed audiences

as the quirky Annie Hall
in Woody Allen’s film.

"Annie Hall" won Keaton an Oscar

and came to define
her onscreen persona.

She was likable, goofy,
uniquely stylish, approachable,

the lovable nerd girl next door.

But our work in "Looking
for Mr. Goodbar"

is completely different,
yet equally noteworthy.

Certainly more daring.

Keaton plays Theresa,
a young New Yorker

who spends her days
teaching deaf children

and her nights cruising the
singles bars of Manhattan.

Theresa has a
complicated relationship

with her strict Catholic parents

and her flaky sister, Katherine,

played by a massively
Underappreciated actress,

Tuesday Weld, in an
Oscar‐nominated turn.

As Theresa’s romantic and family
relationships deteriorate,

she spirals into a double
life of booze, drugs,

and anonymous sexual encounters.

The film is an adaptation
of a bestselling novel

by Judith Rossner
who became fixated

on the murder of a 27‐year‐old
woman named Roseann Quinn.

Like Keaton’s character,
Quinn was a teacher

who frequented singles bars.

She was murdered by a man she
met on New Year’s Day in 1973.

Coverage of the crime in
New York was sensational.

It played like a stern
Victorian warning

during an era of newfound
sexual liberation

and independence for women.

Inevitably, many
people, including some
of those in power,

placed a moral judgment
on what happened to Quinn,

as if the young victim
was somehow to blame

for her own murder.

In 1975, Rossner’s
novelized take on the crime

skyrocketed to number one

on the New York Times
bestseller list,

and Paramount snapped
up the movie rights.

The rest of the cast includes
Tom Berenger, LeVar Burton,

and it features a breakout
performance by Richard Gere.

Released in 1977,
from Richard Brooks,

one of the best writer‐directors
of his generation,

"Looking for Mr. Goodbar."
