[insects chirping]

[wind whistles]

[man over radio] Mayday, mayday.

Come in.

-Is anyone out there? -[radio static crackles]

-Bear, can you hear me? -[radio static crackles]

-Bear Grylls, can you hear me? -[radio static crackles]

-[radio static crackles] -Bear!

Come in!

Is anyone out there?

[grunts]

[strained grunting]

Need a knife. [groans]

[strained grunting]

[groans]

Oh, my head.

[groans]

[tense music playing]

"Bear… Bear Grylls."

[sighs] I don't recognize myself.

There's something wrong. I'm going to need your help here.

[dramatic music plays]

-[ice crackles] -[wolf howls]

[grizzly bear roars]

All right, I'm not going to survive long out here

if I don't find water and food and shelter…

[panting] But which areas am I going to do first?

This is why I'm going to need some help with this.

Hungry, thirsty. It's getting colder by the second too.

[sighs] What do I need most of all?

[suspenseful music playing]

There's no food.

How am I going to find food out here?

I mean, all the ground is like frozen solid.

Can't dig into it.

Maybe eat some of these little shoots. [chewing]

[spits]

There's just nothing in it.

Oh, look.

Wow, look at these.

They're like claw marks.

[twigs snapping]

[tense music plays]

[breathes heavily] There, look.

[distant roar]

Did you see that?

Ah, I can't make out what this is.

If it's a wild animal, it means we're in danger here,

but if it's a hunter, maybe they could actually help us.

I don't want to make any sudden moves here.

So what do you reckon we should do?

Either we look closer, or we just walk away.

Okay, let's slowly back away out of here.

Look, look. There it is again.

[rustling]

[whispers] Over there, look, look.

Yeah, that is definitely some kind of wild animal.

Yeah, we definitely want to be careful out here.

We're not going to be the only thing looking for food.

[animal growling]

[intense music playing]

I can't find anything to eat.

And it's definitely getting colder now. The sun's going down.

Still thirsty, still hungry. I do need shelter.

I'm just going to have a pee first.

Hey, give me some privacy.

Oh, my pee is really, really yellow.

And I know that's not a good sign.

That reminds me that you got to have fluids.

You got to have water first.

I think looking just for food has been a big mistake.

But it is also really cold out here.

Feels like we're running out of time, running out of options.

What do I need more now? To get hydrated?

Or to get some shelter and try and get warm?

You know, we got to make a good choice on this one.

What's the priority? Find water?

Or find shelter?

Shelter, that's going to be a good idea. Get warm.

Let's try and use the trees.

Or even better, fallen down trees, like this.

That feels right. That feels right.

[panting] It's almost like natural shelter here.

I just don't quite know what to do with it.

It's a weird feeling because…

I know trees as shelter is going to work, but I…

It's almost like an instinct. I know to use this for a shelter.

And then maybe we use the parachute as well.

That can keep me warm. Yeah, let's get that.

[thrilling music playing]

Parachute and a fallen-down tree, I think this is going to work.

Maybe drape this up high. [pants]

Secure this here.

Shelter done. I'm still going to be cold.

Dead twigs, I can make fire with that.

Make a rock wall here.

[grunts] And that's going to reflect heat back.

It's going to make it even warmer. Okay. How do I know this stuff?

Don't think.

Just do it. Do what feels right. Okay.

And how am I going to get a fire going? No matches.

No lighter.

I've got all this dry grass, which is good.

Just need some way to start it.

Yeah, that feels warm.

We're going to create friction.

This is making sense. I know how to do this.

And tie some of that parachute line around one end.

And then loop it over this end.

And this can be like a bow.

Okay, let's see if this works.

Steady. Keep it going. Patience.

Only a couple more. Here we go.

[groans]

We're going down! -We must've hit something.

[yells]

I was in a plane crash.

[sighs] I wonder if the pilot's okay.

[grunts]

Try and warm my feet up. [grunts]

Oh, look.

Oh.

Well, that's me.

And that must be my family.

And that's why I've got to get home.

This camp is going to keep me warm…

but I'm still going to need food and water.

I am getting thirsty and I'm also hungry.

So, what's the priority?

[tense music playing]

Water.

But where do you find water out here?

I mean, all of the water's got to funnel down from the mountains.

We're looking for narrow, low points.

Ah, look, it's getting boggier here.

That should mean water.

Oh!

Ice.

And ice means water.

Get it back to the fire, into that pot.

I have water.

There is going to be plenty now. This is good.

I think this is so cold, I can just stuff it in my backpack,

it actually won't melt.

That's the ice for later.

[sniffs] There's a really bad smell around here.

It's coming from over there.

Got to check this out.

Oh, God, smell it.

Something's rotting.

Oh, look. A carcass of some sort.

It's weird, 'cause look, branches are covering it up.

It's like

somebody or something's

dragged it here and then tried to protect it.

I think this is bear fur.

Ah, there's a big cut mark straight down it.

I wonder if it's that.

Maybe that creature that we saw… that we saw earlier.

[distant growling]

So, there is definitely something out there.

And something big,

but there could be some food

still on this.

And then even the fur, I can use that to try and stay warm.

But also mindful of whatever killed this

is definitely more powerful than me.

Okay, I want to get some meat

and then skin this fur off and then get out of here.

Good work. We've got some food.

We've got shelter.

And we've got some water melting here.

[exhales] It changes everything.

The plane's going down!

[groans]

I just managed to get out! I'm going into the trees!

[yells and grunts]

[rustling]

What is that noise?

Hey!

[low growling]

[growls]

Oh, look.

[snarls]

Wolf! Run!

[panting]

[intense music playing]

[snarling]

[heart beating]

I don't think I'm going to be able to outrun this wolf.

So, we're going to try and lose it in the forest.

We'll head for higher ground.

What are you waiting for?

Quick, make a decision!

[wolf snarling]

[snarling]

[intense music playing]

[panting] The wolf is going to know this forest well.

[pants] I've got to shake him. Let's head for that mountain.

[intense music rising]

-[wolf barking] -[Bear panting]

-[snarling] -[Bear pants]

Maybe we can block this entrance here.

Yeah!

-[wolf growling] -[Bear yells]

He can't get through this.

-[wolf snarling] -[Bear grunts]

[sighs with relief]

Yeah. It's gone. Let's go.

[wolf howls]

[panting]

Look at this.

It looks like tunnels into the mountains there.

-[man on radio] Mayday, mayday. Come in. -Oh, that's a radio.

Is anyone out there? Can you hear me?

Yeah, hello? Hello? Can you hear me? [panting]

[man on radio] Bear? Oh, thank God. You're alive.

Look, I need your help.

I'm on the other side of the mountain from where you jumped out.

I can't move and I'm afraid the plane's going to go over the edge.

Yeah, but… there's a problem.

My memory's gone. I can't remember what's happened.

I don't even remember who I am at this point.

Over.

[man] Probably hit your head during the crash.

[chuckles] Yeah.

[breathing heavily] I guess I've got a bit of amnesia.

Over.

Come on, man. You're Bear Grylls.

You're an adventurer.

I'm not going to make it much longer here.

Okay. So, here's the thing. I'm above the tree line now.

I'm going to come for you.

Just hold tight. You know, hold tight and you can do this, all right?

-We're going to find you. -All right, Bear.

Out.

We've got some decisions to make now.

Either to try and find

the captain…

we go up and straight over this mountain.

Or we try and see if we can use some of these tunnels

and hope that they will run through the mountain

and that could be a good shortcut.

There's going to be danger with both.

If we go up there, it's going to be cold. It's going to be exposed.

It's going to be draining of energy.

But we will have communications with the radio.

It's going to work up there.

Once I'm into those tunnels it's going to be a blackout.

I'll never get a signal.

But we're more protected from any bad weather

and it might well be a more direct route.

Difficult decision but time is ticking. So, what do you reckon?

The tunnels

or up and over the mountain?

Okay. Just going to have to take it slow and steady

if I'm going to make it up this mountain.

Whoa. [grunts]

Got to be careful here.

[intense music playing]

I'm making some good progress now.

[panting]

But these mountains are going on forever

and they're getting steeper.

This is looking a nasty section.

Just ice and steep snow, all the way down to that huge cliff.

If I slip on that ice, whoosh!

Straight off the edge of the cliff, which is not helping my memory.

I look at this and it's like, I don't even know if that's doable.

Or we can stay on the rock…

and try and climb up this.

You know, Joe said I was an adventurer.

Maybe I've got to trust that a bit more.

[grunts] It does feel good having hand on rock again.

I remember that.

But then again, that is a long way up.

Oh, I just don't know if I can climb this.

What do you think?

Try and traverse the snow?

Or we rock climb?

That snow could easily give way under my weight.

So could the rocks come loose here?

And that would be a long way to fall.

It is very steep.

I can use the rope.

Tie a knot in the end. Throw that.

Get it into one of the cracks.

All right, it's a knot of some sorts. I just hope it holds.

But not much else.

[tense music playing]

Okay, one more. If I get it in that crack, this will work.

[grunts]

Yeah, now that's caught. It's jammed in that little crevice.

Okay. Helmet on.

[pants]

And then try and climb my way up this.

[grunts]

[tense music intensifies]

[panting]

-[thudding] -[panting]

All of this rock is so loose and crumbly.

Everything I try and grab or stand on just pulls away.

Last push. [panting]

Okay.

[panting]

Okay, at the top.

Maybe I'm not as bad at climbing as I feared.

Pull the rope up and keep moving.

[exhales deeply]

[intense music playing]

[panting]

[panting]

Definitely feeling a headache now.

[groans]

I remember now.

You know, the higher you go… [pants]

the less oxygen you get.

That's why you got headaches and dizziness and fatigue.

[sighs] I remember that.

I think when you climb to high elevation, your body chemistry just changes.

But I'm sure that if you stop and wait,

your body will slowly adjust to the thinner air

and you can avoid getting sick from altitude.

Yeah, sometimes you got to listen to your body.

But sometimes, in an emergency, you got to push on and go for it.

If I push on and try and reach the summit and get down the other side,

I am going to reach Joe faster.

[pants]

But it's whether I'd make it in this state.

[panting] But if I wait here, I might acclimatize,

but Joe is also waiting

and he is in a dangerous situation right now.

[pants]

But we're short of time, really short of time.

[panting]

And I'm not that far from the summit now. [panting]

Do I push on?

Or do I try and wait it out and let my body acclimatize?

[exhales sharply]

We're running out of time and energy now.

We got to pick one.

What's it going to be?

Even though I feel exhausted, we're going to go for it.

Reach the summit and get down the other side and reach Joe.

[exhales heavily]

Okay.

[suspenseful music playing]

[panting] Got to think of your family.

Think of the pilot.

[groans]

Definitely feel the altitude here.

[pants, groans]

Cold and very tired.

[pants]

[groans]

[breathing heavily]

Keep going. Come on.

[panting]

[Joe] Bear, do you… [breaks up] …me?

Yeah. You're unreadable. Hold on. Let me get to higher ground.

[panting]

[Joe] Bear, do you copy?

Yeah, Joe. I copy.

You're faint, but I can just about make you out.

Go ahead, over.

[Joe] There's a large creature and it's closing.

What do you mean a large creature? What is it? Over.

I'm having… [breaks up] …huge.

What should I do, Bear? You always know what to do.

Oh, hold on. Just give me a second.

Stay calm, Joe. Stay calm. It's going to be okay.

Oh, Bear, think.

Whatever it is, it's getting closer now and I'm trapped in the plane.

But I can't remember.

Do you make yourself big and scary and try and frighten it away?

Or do you just be quiet and be meek

and hope that it won't see you as a threat and will leave you alone?

So, what should I tell Joe? Come on.

[Joe] Hurry up, Bear. I'm quite scared right now.

[Bear] Come on, think. What do you do when a wild animal is going to attack?

I wish I could remember.

Hurry, Bear. Whatever it is, it's getting closer.

What should I do?

Okay, Joe. So, here is what you're going to do. [pants]

You're going to stay calm, no threatening moves

and hope that it's going to not see you as a threat.

[Joe] All right, I'm going to be quiet.

I hope it goes away, but you hurry up, okay?

Now, hold tight. Speak to it in nice soothing voices.

Don't make eye contact.

[Joe] It's getting closer. What do I have to do, Bear?

It's not working.

-Joe? -Ah! Bear!

Joe, speak to me.

Joe!

Joe?

Joe, do you copy? Over. [panting]

[sighs] There's just nothing from him.

Oh, we really need to hurry now. Let's hope Joe's okay.

[tense music playing]

It looks like the summit is just over this final rock pinnacle.

But looks like there's a narrow gap between that pinnacle and this one.

A little chimney climb would take me up to the summit.

But my head is just pounding now. It hurts even to open my eyes.

You know, I just don't know if I'm going to have the strength to climb anymore.

You know, this is much steeper.

Much more dangerous, much more committing, really.

But it's shorter, probably faster.

Or we follow this switchback up the mountain

and hope it leads us over the top.

That's going to be a safer route but probably longer.

A chimney climb is probably a faster way to go.

Yeah, but who knows if those switchbacks

are going to reach the other side of the mountain.

[tense music climaxing]

Okay. This switchback is leading me up towards the summit which is good.

[panting]

It's just taking quite a long time, back and forward here.

Burning through time and energy.

[groans]

My head is just pounding now.

I definitely should have given my body longer to acclimatize.

Right now I am feeling rough.

[panting]

Feeling really dizzy now. It's just the thin air.

[vomits]

[spits]

[grunts]

[panting]

[exhales deeply]

[panting]

The higher I'm going, the worse I'm feeling as well.

Dizzy.

And all signs of altitude sickness.

[pants] I just need my body to reset, you know?

The easiest way to do this is to turn around

and head back to the tunnels.

Otherwise, I'm going to end up in a really bad way here.

I just hope Joe can hang in there a bit longer.

I got to head down.

[panting]

If I keep going up, I'll die.

[breathes heavily]

And you're struggling to breathe…

[coughs]

And your head is hurting, and you're coughing and… [pants]

It's like nature saying, "You keep going, you'll die."

[panting]

[uneasy music playing]

[groans]

Still feeling pretty weak.

And lightheaded. [panting]

I've still got a headache, but I feel a bit stronger.

You know, even just 1,500 foot of descent gives more energy, more oxygen.

I can feel it. Feeling definitely stronger.

Thicker air down here.

I think we go for these tunnels. [pants]

Yeah. Come on.

Okay, come on. Let's check out those tunnels.

These are pretty crazy, eh?

Oh, wow. Look.

An old helmet.

Look, old ammunition cases.

Maybe this tunnel was some sort of old wartime bunker.

Oh, look. Even an old,

old busted lantern.

[liquid swishing]

But she's got some fuel still in there.

Glass is broken, but let's see if this works.

Ah! Look. Come on!

Hey, look. Little flame.

It's just, I don't know how long that is going to last.

Let's shut this off now we know this works.

Well, at least we've got a light source.

Either we use the light source at the beginning, you know,

and then we'd see what we are dealing with at least.

Or do we try and conserve it and keep it for an emergency?

You know, try and operate a little bit in the dark

and then if we really need it, we get in trouble, we have a backup.

We have a reserve. We have somewhere to go to that we know we'd get light from.

So, what are we going to do? We going to use the light to start with?

Or are we going to conserve the light?

Let's start off in the dark.

So, what are we going to do?

Either light at the beginning, or we save the light?

Okay. So, save the light.

Oh, boy, it's going to be dark in here.

Oh, wow.

Crazy tunnels. Dark as anything.

We don't know which way to go.

Get lost in tunnels like this, you never make it out.

Definitely want some way of working out where we're going, you know?

Every time we do a turn in this tunnel, we've got to be able to remember it.

I think we'll use some of these things on the floor.

-Old tiles. -[tiles clattering]

In the pitch-black when you stand on them, you're really going to hear that.

[tile clinks]

Maybe make an arrow, so every time we reach a junction,

if we go left, make a simple arrow like that.

The good thing about this in the dark when you walk across it,

-you're going to hear it. -[clinking]

It's almost like braille.

So that's one thing. We can either collect a load of these…

[tiles clattering]

…and put them in the backpack and use those.

Ah, but I'm only going to be able to carry so many tiles.

Or maybe just use some paracord from the parachute.

So, every time we turn left, we make a loop

like that.

And a normal knot means turn right.

Then, I'm not sure if I've got enough paracord to reach the end of the tunnel.

So, we can either use the paracord and a series of knots,

or we use the tile markers on the floor.

It's tricky this.

Then again, so is trying to navigate in the dark.

We'll only pick one. Okay, come on. What are we going to try?

-[tiles clattering] -Oh, look, these ones will be great.

You know, at the moment I'm just

following this tunnel wherever it leads.

You can hear the echo. Hello?

[faint echoing]

Another dead end here.

You know, we can either go left

or right.

Maybe the best thing to do is see which echo goes for longer.

And that means it's going to be a longer tunnel.

Hello?

[echoes faintly]

Hello?

[short echo]

Yeah, that's shorter. Okay, so we're going to go left here.

[tiles clatter]

[tense music playing]

[low growling]

Okay, hold on. There's a junction here.

Hello?

Yeah, I think we can go this way.

Okay, we need a mark. Which way are we going here?

[tiles clattering]

Hold on. Hold on. Shh! Shh!

[tiles clattering]

-[low growling] -What is that?

[tiles clattering]

[low growling]

[sudden music sting]

Let's keep moving on. Pick up the pace a bit.

Got to get out of here.

Do not want to be stuck in these tunnels with whatever that is.

[tense music playing]

[tiles clattering]

Just want to be really careful of where I'm putting my feet,

in case there's a big hole.

Ah, these tunnels just twist and turn.

Oh, God. Absolutely… pitch-black in here.

Totally disoriented.

-[squishing] -Ugh.

Do you hear that?

Trod on something that went real… [imitates squishing]

I can hear lots of scurrying around my feet here.

Again, I am hungry.

You know, I wonder, actually, if this is something I can maybe eat.

Oh, it's gone up my arm. Ah!

Sometimes, not being able to see is a good thing.

I can feel it.

It feels like a cockroach, you know, all the little legs

and then a hard shell of a top.

I could eat that. That would be some energy.

And then in this hand, this feels like a millipede

but with a lot of armor on it.

[uneasy music plays]

Like that. That is huge.

I could eat that as well maybe.

But I do need some energy.

But my instinct says one of these is going to make me sick…

whether it's that cockroach

or this millipede.

And I am hungry.

Go on, then, which one would you eat?

[tense music continues]

I just wish I could remember.

What do you reckon? What's the safe bet?

Okay.

Millipede.

This isn't so much a snack.

It's more of a main meal, this.

[suspenseful music plays]

[crunching]

That is very crunchy.

And full of…

a lot of very weird-tasting fluids.

The tunnels are welcome to those. [groans]

[uneasy music continues]

We're making such slow progress in this pitch-black.

I think it's time to use the lantern, fire up some light

and try and make some progress now.

[distant squeaking]

-Do you hear that? Rats. -[squeaking]

Okay.

Oh, that's better.

Now we've got light we're really going to be able to pick up the speed.

Ugh, hold on a sec.

[groans]

Just feeling really rough from that

millipede.

A really strong taste in my stomach.

Had it for about 20 minutes now.

Oh, hold on. Hold on.

[exhales deeply] Ugh.

[groans]

[vomits]

[coughs]

[groans]

Oh, that's better.

I thought my body did not want that inside it.

[panting]

[exhales heavily]

Let's keep going.

Oh, wow, look at this.

Old metal rusted door.

Let's see if this opens. [grunts]

[grunting]

Oh, wow. This place is crazy.

[tense music continues]

Whoa. Hold on.

Oh, look, there's a wire across here.

Probably a booby trap.

And that is why it was worth saving the lantern fuel.

And if that's still live…

Yeah, you don't even want to think about that.

Okay, stepping very carefully over this.

It looks like some light ahead. Yeah, here.

It's going to be our way out of here now.

Okay, shut this off.

Oh, it's a good feeling, seeing daylight.

[pants]

Oh, wow. Look at that for a drop-off.

And the pilot, Captain Raynor, he's going to be down there somewhere.

Okay, if I can tie off around these bars,

then I think I can use that to rappel down.

Okay, that's secure. I'm happy. Let's go.

Ah, this feels familiar.

Just got to go slow, keep steady, secure footing.

Oh, boy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Okay. I think that's good.

Okay, let's find this plane. It's got to be here somewhere now.

Getting really steep here.

Oh, but look. The tail section of the plane.

Another bit of debris down there.

Oh, there's the plane.

There. Joe!

Oh, this is balanced really precariously right on that edge.

Don't want to knock anything here.

Joe! [pants]

Captain Raynor!

Look at these. Something's ripped this seat.

Like claw marks.

A definite sign of struggle here. Look, there's blood here.

All the way down the side.

Where does that go?

I'll look up here as well.

Got blood here. The thing is, that's dried now.

Looks like the blood is leading this way.

The problem is though, look.

There's another trail going in the opposite direction.

You can see, like, scuff marks.

And in the mud, something has moved that way from here.

It's hard to tell if these are actual footprints.

They're definitely some sort of tracks.

Joe!

We've got to try and find Captain Joe.

That's a priority.

So, what do you think?

Follow the trail that's leading that way?

Or to follow the droplets of the blood leading this way?

Joe!

[Bear] We don't have much time. We've got to make a decision fast.

So which trail do you think is going to lead us to Joe?

Okay, let's follow these little droplets of blood.

There's another one on the wing here.

And look, another little droplet down there.

Look, more here.

Joe! Captain!

Oh, look. There's a little cave up there.

If I was injured, that's where I'd head, try and get some shelter.

Okay, come on.

More blood.

And here.

Joe?

Joe?

Joe!

Oh, man.

Look at that. A rib of something.

That doesn't look like Joe…

Argh!

-[thudding] -[growling]

-[groaning] -[growling]

[Bear grunts and groans]

[growling]

[Bear] Oh. This isn't good.

It looks like I'm not getting off the mountain.

[animal growls]

[grunts] Come on, let's go back and we can try again.

Let's make some different choices until we rescue Captain Joe.

Okay, let's go and try and find water.

[suspenseful music playing]

Cold and thirsty.

I really need to find water now.

[panting] But where do you find water out here?

Ah, I used to know this stuff.

[panting]

Think.

We're going down!

We must've hit something!

[yells]

[groans]

Yeah, I definitely can remember just being… being in a crash…

in a plane and it going down.

I wonder what's happened to the pilot.

Yeah.

[grunts]

This looks like marsh.

That should mean water.

Ah, look, it's getting boggier here.

The problem is, all of this is frozen solid.

There's no way I can get into this. [grunts]

[groans]

[straining]

If this was softer, I could squeeze it and get maybe some fluids out like that.

Well, maybe water wasn't such a good idea. [pants]

I'm going to have to keep searching for water.

This isn't going to work.

So, the sun is going down.

And I'm getting much colder now.

And I'm also hungry.

[pants] Yeah, I can survive a few days without water,

but I'm not going to survive long if I don't get warm.

Shelter or food?

One is going to be more important than the other.

And I'm running out of time.

And it is getting really cold now, really cold.

[groans]

Shelter, that's going to be a good idea.

Get warm.

Try and use the trees.

Oh, even better, fallen-down trees, like this.

That feels right. That feels right.

It's almost like natural shelter here.

I just don't quite know what to do with it.

It's a weird feeling because…

I know trees as shelter is going to work, but I…

It's almost like an instinct.

I know to use this for a shelter.

And then maybe we use the parachute as well.

That can keep me warm. Yeah, let's get that.

[suspenseful music playing]

Parachute and fallen down tree.

I think this is going to work.

Maybe drape this up high.

Secure this here.

[panting]

Shelter done.

I'm still going to be cold.

Dead twigs, I can make fire with that.

Make a rock wall here.

And that's going to reflect heat back.

That is going to make it even warmer.

Okay, how do I know this stuff?

[panting] Don't think.

Just do it.

Do what feels right. Okay. How am I going to get a fire going?

No matches.

No lighter.

I've got all this dry grass, which is good.

I just need some way to start it.

Yeah, that feels warm.

We're going to create friction.

This is making sense. I know how to do this.

And tie some of that parachute line around one end.

And then loop it over this end.

And this can be like a bow.

Okay, let's see if this works.

That's what I need just to get a little bit of ember going.

Here we go. Here we go.

Oh, the heat!

Whew!

Oh, that feels good.

Try and warm my feet up. [grunts]

Oh, look.

Oh.

Well, that's me.

And that must be my family.

And that's why I've got to get home.

This camp is going to keep me warm…

but I'm still going to need food and water.

I am getting thirsty and I'm also hungry.

So what's the priority?

Shelter, that's going to be a good idea.

Get warm.

Let's try and use the trees.

Oh, even better, fallen-down trees, like this.

That feels right. That feels right.

It's almost like natural shelter here.

[panting] Shelter done.

This is making sense. I know how to do this.

And tie some of that parachute line around one end.

And then loop it over this end.

And this can be like a bow.

Okay, let's see if this works.

Ah, steady. Keep it going. Patience. A couple more. Here we go.

[groans]

-We're going down! -We must've hit something.

[yells]

I was in a plane crash.

[sighs] I wonder if the pilot's okay.

[wolf howls]

Let me try and warm my feet up. [grunts]

Oh, look.

Oh.

Well, that's me.

And that must be my family.

And that's why I've got to get home.

This camp is going to keep me warm…

but I'm still going to need food and water.

I am getting thirsty and I'm also hungry. So, what's the priority?

[whispering] Yeah, I definitely saw something there.

Something just moved.

Where is it? Hold on. I'm sure I saw something just…

Must be just me imagining it.

It's weird. I definitely have that… feeling

that something's watching me here.

But, you know, maybe it's just my bang on the head.

Maybe it's nothing.

[low growling]

I can't find anything to eat.

And it's definitely getting colder now. The sun's going down.

Still thirsty, still hungry. I do need shelter.

I'm just going to have a pee first.

Food feels like a smart idea.

Food means energy.

And I'm running out of it at the moment.

Just not sure what I can actually eat out here.

Maybe eat some of these little shoots.

[spits]

[spits]

That's just not food.

This sort of thing, base of a tree, you know, my instinct says dig in,

but the problem is, it's all just frozen solid.

I can't… There's no way I can dig into this.

I can't get grubs or worms.

There are no shoots in the trees. This is hard.

Yeah, I'm… I'm not finding food.

I just feel like I'm going in circles.

And I'm cold. [pants]

And I'm running out of energy here. [groans]

And I can't find any food…

and any water and I'm getting really cold now.

[grunts]

The sun's going down. The temperature is dropping.

[grunts] I need to get warm.

I just don't have the strength now.

I'm just too disoriented to carry on.

Maybe we need to start over and try something else first.

And then we can just keep moving

and try and figure out where to go next then.

[exhales deeply]

Okay, let's try this again.

I mean, I got a water bottle, but that's empty.

There's no food in there and no tent.

And I've got a thin jacket, but it is super cold here.

[sniffles]

Food,

shelter

or find water?

What am I going to need the most?

It's getting dark. It's freezing.

And I'm starting to fade now.

Come on. Hurry up.

Food feels like a smart idea. Food means energy.

And I'm running out of it at the moment.

Just not sure what I can actually eat out here.

Maybe eat some of these little shoots.

[spits]

[spits] That's just not food.

This sort of thing, base of a tree, you know, my instinct says dig in,

but the problem is, it's all just frozen solid.

I can't… There's no way I can dig into this.

Yeah, I'm… I'm not finding food.

Just feel like I'm going in circles. [panting]

And I'm cold. [panting]

And I'm running out of energy here.

And I can't find any food…

and I'm getting really cold now.

[grunts]

The sun's going down. The temperature is dropping.

[grunts] I need to get warm.

I just feel so disoriented.

I just wish I could remember, you know, remember what I should do.

I'm so cold now and I'm thirsty.

What do you think we should do next?

Let's start over with a new survival strategy.

I can't get grubs or worms.

There are no shoots in the trees. This is hard.

Yeah, I'm… I'm not finding food.

I've just got no energy, no strength.

[groans]

The sun's going down. The temperature is dropping.

I think that you can survive for weeks without food,

but only days without water.

And right now I am so thirsty.

Let's go back and look for water.

And then we're going to be able to keep moving

and figure out where we are.

Okay, come on. Let's do it.

[grunts]

Water is always going to flow downhill. Let's go down.

Ah, look, it's getting boggier here.

That should mean water.

Oh!

Ice.

And ice means water.

Get it back to the fire, into that pot.

And I have water.

There is going to be plenty now. This is good.

I think this is so cold, I can just stuff it in my backpack,

and it actually won't melt.

That's the ice for later.

[sniffs] But there's a really bad smell around here.

[sniffs]

[exhales] It's coming from over there.

Go and check this out.

Oh, God, smell it.

Something's rotting.

Oh, look. A carcass of some sort.

It's weird, 'cause look, branches are covering it up.

It's like…

somebody or something's

dragged it here and then tried to protect it.

I think this is bear fur.

Oh, there's a big cut mark straight down it.

So there is definitely something out there.

And something big,

but there could be some food

still on this.

And then even the fur, I can use that to try and stay warm.

But also mindful of whatever killed this…

is definitely more powerful than me.

Okay, I want to get some meat

and then skin this fur off and then get out of here.

Good work. We've got some food.

We've got shelter and we've got some water melting here.

Oh, it changes everything.

[groans]

The plane's going down!

[groans]

I just managed to get out! I'm going into the trees!

[yells]

[rustling]

What is that noise?

Hey!

[growling]

Oh, look.

[snarling]

Wolf! Run! [panting]

[barking, snarling]

[intense music playing]

I don't think I'm going to be able to outrun this wolf.

So we're going to try and lose it in the forest,

or head for higher ground.

What are you waiting for? Quick! Make a decision.

[intense music playing]

-[Bear panting] -[wolf snarling]

-[wolf barking] -[Bear grunting]

-[wolf snarls] -[Bear grunts]

Maybe we can block this path in here.

Yeah!

-Hey! Ah! -[wolf growling]

He can't get through this. [grunts]

-[Bear grunts] -[wolf growls]

Yeah. It's gone. Let's go.

[wolf howls]

[panting]

Look at this.

It looks like tunnels into the mountains there.

-[man over radio] Mayday, mayday. -Oh, that's the radio.

Come in. Is anyone out there? Can you hear me?

Yeah, hello. Hello, can you hear me? [pants]

[man over radio] Bear? Oh, thank God. You're alive.

Look, I need your help.

I'm on the other side of the mountain from where you jumped out.

I can't move and I'm afraid the plane's going to go over the edge.

Yeah, but… there's a problem.

My memory's gone. I can't remember what's happened.

I don't even remember who I am at this point.

Over.

Probably hit your head during the crash.

[laughs] Yeah.

I guess I've got a bit of amnesia.

Over.

Come on, man. You're Bear Grylls.

You're an adventurer.

I'm not going to make it much longer here.

Okay, so, here's the thing.

I'm above the tree line now.

I'm going to come for you.

Just hold tight.

You know, hold tight and you can do this, all right?

We're going to find you.

-All right, Bear. -Out.

We've got some decisions to make now.

Either, to try and find the captain…

we go up and straight over this mountain.

Or we try and see

if we can use some of these tunnels

and hope that they will run through the mountain

and that could be a good shortcut.

There's going to be danger with both.

If we go up there, it's going to be cold. It's going to be exposed.

It's going to be draining of energy.

But we will have communications with the radio.

It's going to work up there.

Once I'm into those tunnels, it's going to be a blackout.

I'll never get a signal,

but we're more protected from any bad weather

and it might well be a more direct route.

Difficult decision, but time is ticking.

So, what do you reckon?

The tunnels

or up and over the mountain?

I'm cold and thirsty.

I really need to find water now.

But where do you find water out here?

I used to know this stuff. [sighs]

Think.

We're going down!

We must've hit something.

[yells]

[groans]

Yeah, definitely can remember just being…

being in a crash in a plane

and it going down.

[sighs] I wonder what's happened to the pilot.

Yeah.

[panting]

This looks like marsh.

That should mean water.

Ah, look, it's getting boggier here.

The problem is, all of this is frozen solid.

There's no way I can get into this.

That's cold. Cold.

I'm going to have to keep searching for water.

But the sun is going down… [pants]

And I am getting much colder now.

[panting]

[grunts] It's just absolutely all frozen solid.

[crunching]

[spits]

Ice.

But this is going to make me really cold, even colder.

And how can I drink it?

Yeah, I can survive a few days without water,

but I'm not going to survive long if I don't get warm.

Maybe I should have…

Maybe we should've gone for shelter.

It's cold.

Cold.

[groans] I should've done things differently.

[grunts]

Oh, I can't find any food.

And any water.

And I'm getting really cold now. [groans]

[grunts] I need to get warm.

Just wish I could remember what's most important

to staying alive in a place like this.

Oh, I'm just too cold now to complete this mission.

Let's start over with a new survival strategy.

If we try something else first, we can keep moving

and then determine our location.

I can't get grubs or worms.

There are no shoots in the trees. This is hard.

Yeah, I'm… I'm not finding food.

[groans] I'm just so thirsty.

And I'm just running out of energy now.

I can't find any food.

And I'm getting really cold now.

The sun's going down. The temperature is dropping.

I guess we should've tried to find water before trying to find food.

Let's go and try and find water before it's too dark. Come on.

Then we can keep moving

and try and figure out where we go to next.

It's just, I can see down this funnel.

There's a sheer cliff about 20 meters away.

Just try and start really carefully across this.

[grunting] Use that ice ax.

[grunting] Try and make little ledges maybe.

[panting]

[grunts]

Spread my weight between the ice ax…

and both feet. [yells]

[groans]

Come on, stay calm. Keep calm. Keep calm.

Focus. [panting]

[grunting]

[grunts]

[pants]

Definitely not going back that way.

That's a long way down.

It's a dead end here.

Big drop-offs on all sides.

There's no way I can get up this overhang there, look.

Oh, look. It's another tunnel.

Look, it's some stairs going down into the mountain.

Wonder if it leads to the rest of the tunnels we saw.

Hello?

Oh, it looks pretty spooky down there.

Looks like our only way, though.

We're going to lose radio signal in here,

but I'm just hoping this is going to lead me to Joe.

Okay, so, we're going to find a place just to wait it out.

Try and give my body a few hours to acclimatize

and see if I can feel stronger then. [pants]

Okay, let's get up in amongst these rocks here.

[panting]

[grunts, pants]

Can sit and wait it out here.

[panting]

Okay.

[grunts, exhales deeply]

It's definitely good to stop and rest

and when my headache goes and I don't feel sick any longer,

then we're going to be able to keep going and keep climbing.

[grunting]

[sighs]

I rested for a little bit.

I do feel a bit better actually.

[grunts]

Time to push on now. [pants]

Get over the summit and down the other side. Come on.

Time's ticking and Joe still needs our help. Come on.

Okay, Joe, listen carefully.

Whatever is threatening you,

you got to let them know that you're in charge.

You're the boss.

[Joe] I don't know. I can try to attack it with something.

Try and make eye contact. Big aggressive movements.

Put your arms out.

Bark at it. Shout at it. Shout orders. Do you copy?

[Joe] All right, Bear. I'm trying it, yeah.

Get away!

Just bang anything you can. Kick the fuselage.

Do you copy? Over.

-[growling] -[Joe] Get away! Move!

-Get away from me! -[growling]

-I just don't know if this is working. -Get away!

Come on. Come on, Joe.

Joe?

Hello? Are you still there?

[Joe] It's working.

It seems to go away.

Well done, Joe. Well done, you. Good job.

I know you think it's gone, but stay vigilant.

I'm almost at the top of this peak now.

Once I'm over this, then I should be able to get eyes on you, but hang tight.

Stay strong. We're getting there, Joe.

[Joe] Yeah, thanks, Bear.

Bear out. [panting]

Okay, come on. Let's get moving.

It looks like the summit's just over this final rock pinnacle.

But looks like there's a narrow gap between that pinnacle and this one.

A little chimney climb will take me up to the summit.

This is much steeper.

Much more dangerous, much more committing, really.

But it's shorter and probably faster.

Or we follow this switchback up the mountain

and hope it leads us over the top.

That's going to be a safer route, but probably longer.

We're going to start losing daylight soon

and then it's going to be impossible to find Joe.

So we've got no time to waste here.

[intense music playing]

This is going to be a climb.

Definitely worth wearing a helmet here.

[grunts]

You can see it's going into a chimney here where the walls are getting narrower.

Just try and push my feet against one wall.

And my back on the other. [panting]

It's hard work with the thin air.

Okay, come on.

We can do this. [grunts]

[panting]

A long way up, this chimney climb.

[panting]

[breathing deeply, grunts]

[panting]

Okay, from here, last little push to the summit.

[pants]

[pants]

Top of the mountain, look at this.

Whew! [panting]

Oh, first time I'm able to see down the other side.

[music climaxes]

Phew! [pants]

Let's try and get a quick signal through.

-[radio bleeps] -Low power.

Oh, no. It just died straight away.

[sighs] Well, at least we're up here now.

And now it's just heading down

and trying to see if I can spot this wreck.

See if we can find Joe.

It's going to be a tiny little pin prick though.

Okay, let's head through and down that way.

This is going to be a climb.

Definitely worth wearing a helmet here. [grunts]

You can see it's going into a chimney here where the walls are getting narrower.

Just try and push my feet against one wall.

And my back on the other. [pants]

It's hard work with the thin air. And my head is pounding.

I just feel terrible. [groans]

Keep feeling really dizzy.

[vomits]

[gasps for breath]

[groans] Altitude sickness. I remember it.

Maybe we should have stopped and tried to acclimatize.

I'll try and go a little bit further.

[grunts]

We can do this. [grunting, panting]

A long way up, this chimney climb.

[panting] I'm just running out of strength.

I just know it's because I'm getting ever higher

and the air is getting thinner.

The danger is you make one mistake now…

and that's a definite death drop.

[exhales deeply] I think sometimes you've got to be smarter,

know when to push on… [pants]

…and when to stop and back away

and, you know, get ready and then go again.

Right now, if I'm going to survive, I need to go back. [pants]

I need more oxygen, thinner air, lower altitude. [pants]

I definitely should have given my body a few hours to acclimatize. [grunts]

Head back to that tunnel entrance.

Try that way.

Joe's going to have to wait a little bit longer.

[groans] Oh, okay.

[panting] Okay, back to the tunnels.

[exhales deeply]

Okay, this switchback

is leading me up towards the summit, which is good.

It's just taking quite a long time, back and forward here.

Burning through time and energy.

Up the mountain now.

[panting] I'm getting really tired here.

Top of the switchbacks.

That's the summit. Come on.

[intense music playing]

[grunts]

[grunts]

Top of the mountain, look at this.

Phew!

Oh, first time I'm going to be able to see down the other side.

Phew! [panting]

Let's try and get a quick signal through.

-[radio bleeps] -Low power.

Oh, no. It just died straight away.

[sighs]

Well, at least we're up here now.

And now it's just heading down and trying to see if I can spot this wreck.

See if we can find Joe.

It's going to be a tiny little pin prick though.

Okay, let's head through and down that way.

[suspenseful music playing]

Okay. I've got to find this plane.

It's got to be here somewhere now.

[exhaling]

Getting really steep here.

Oh, but look. The tail section of the plane.

Here. Another bit of debris down there.

We're getting close.

Oh, look, there's the cockpit, right perched on the edge.

Hey! Can you hear me?

[Joe] Bear?

Bear, I'm here!

[rumbling]

[Bear] You all right there, Joe?

[Joe] Uh, I'm trapped in the plane and the…

When I move, the plane moves.

Yeah, I'm going to figure something out. Stay tight.

[grunts] Going to use this rope. Wrap it around this rock.

Rappel down and we'll figure out how to get to him.

Okay, I'm coming down to you.

No sudden movements, Joe.

-[Joe] All right. Hurry up. -I'm going to get you out of here.

We're about 50 foot down to the last bit of this wreck.

It's just how to get him back up here?

Now, either I try and throw this rope down to him,

get him to secure himself in and then try and pull him from up here.

Or I rappel down to him and physically help him,

but it's going to be harder to try and climb with him.

That plane could go over the edge at any second.

Do I rappel down there and try and help him to safety?

Or just throw the rope, and try and guide him back up?

Okay, Joe, I'm going to throw you the rope.

-Okay. -Try and catch it.

-Stick your arm out ready. -Okay.

Coming one, two, three!

All right.

Okay. Wrap it around yourself and secure the carabiner.

All right.

-Joe, you secured? -Yeah, yeah. Pull me up.

You're going to have to release the seat belt.

-All right. -And then roll out. I've got you, okay?

One!

-Two! -Yeah.

Three.

-Go! Go! Go! I got you -[Joe grunts]

[groaning, panting]

[groans]

[groans] Oh, my head.

[Joe groans]

-You all right, Joe? -Yeah, Bear.

[grunts]

[Joe] Pull me up. [grunts]

[Joe] Yep. Oh, thank God, man.

Keep climbing. Keep climbing.

[both grunting]

[Joe panting]

-[Bear] Well done. -[Joe sighs]

-That was so close. -That was close.

That was close.

How big is that explosion, you know? Oh, it just jolted my memory back.

Yeah? Maybe.

I can remember my family.

I also remember…

you always were a lousy pilot.

[both laugh]

Okay, I know exactly what we've got to do here.

We need to follow that valley down.

-You see the trees down there? -Yeah.

That means food and water

and we follow it down to the valley, eventually, then people.

Yeah! Come on, let's go.

[Bear] We're going this way.

[emotional music playing]

By the way, what was that animal?

[Joe] I don't know, but let's not go back and find out.

[Bear] If you're brave enough to go back, or start over from the beginning,

you missed a lot of adventure and mystery inside those tunnels.

Who knows? You may even run into that creature.

So, be careful.

[Bear] I'm coming down to you, Joe.

Twenty feet away.

[tense music playing]

Don't rock it. Don't rock.

I think the plane is falling down.

I know, I know. Okay, I'm going to secure you to this line.

[Joe] Okay.

-[Joe grunts] -[Bear] You are now secure there.

I want you to reach across here with one hand.

-All right. -Left hand, you pull the belt.

-Are you ready? One, two, three. -Wha…? All right, man.

[Bear] Go! Go! Go! I got you.

[groans]

That is what I call in the nick of time.

[panting]

Oh!

-Captain Raynor, of course. -Yeah.

-I remember. I remember. [groans] -Oh, thank God, man.

Also, I remember everything.

-Yeah? -I remember the plane crash.

-[Joe] Yeah. -And my family.

I also know what we need to do to get out of here.

And we're not going that way. We're going to go across.

See the high mountains?

We can then follow all of this valley out.

We get down to the bottom and we'll eventually find people.

-[Joe] All right. -Okay, we're going that way.

[emotional music playing]

[Bear] By the way, what was that animal?

[Joe] I don't know, but let's not go back and find out.

[Bear] If you're brave enough to go back, or start over from the beginning,

you missed a lot of adventure and mystery inside those tunnels.

Who knows? You may even run into that creature.

So, be careful.

Okay, let's fire this up.

Okay, let's see how long that lasts.

Let's get in.

[grunts]

[squeaking]

Oh, I hate rats.

I can feel some wind on my face here.

Yeah, from this tunnel.

And where there's wind, that breeze has got to be coming from somewhere.

I'm going to follow that.

I hope that's going to lead us through the mountain.

Oh, wow, check this out.

Stairs going all the way up as far as I can see.

That's a dead end, that one.

But this tunnel, I can feel a bit of breeze on this one.

So, whether to go up the steps…

or follow this tunnel and follow the breeze.

I'm not sure how much time we got left with this light now.

But who knows where these stairs go?

Which way do you reckon is going to lead us to Joe?

Okay, heading up.

Let's just hope this is leading through the mountain.

At the moment, it does feel like it's only going up.

And maybe when we reach the top, we'll get some radio signal back again.

Phew! [panting]

[grunts] Climbing these stairs is taking longer than expected.

Just hope Joe can hang in there a little longer.

Come on.

This is just going on forever.

Definitely feeling the altitude.

It looks like some light ahead.

Yeah, here.

Look, it's leading out.

[groans] Bright daylight.

Look at this.

Sheer drop off, but I reckon we're about three quarters of the way up it now.

Try and find a way to climb the last little bit.

Okay, we're going to use knots tied into the rope.

-Okay, let's do this. -[squeaking]

I can hear something scurrying on the ground.

-Oh, I just kicked something. -[squeaking]

Mice or rats.

Okay, it goes down this way.

Or

this way.

I can feel a slight breeze coming this way.

Probably better off going that way.

So, first junction, we're turning right.

Here we go, one overhand knot.

Okay.

Definitely feel the wind.

The wind's got to come from somewhere. There's got to be an opening

and that's what I'm looking for, an opening

to the other side of the mountain in these tunnels.

There's another ending here.

Okay, it's a junction.

Either go left or right. Where's the wind?

Yeah, I can feel a slight breeze this way.

Okay, left. That's a loop.

Let's go this way.

[low growling]

[tense music playing]

And then we're going to go this way to the right, down this one.

Let's see if we have more luck down here.

Okay, so, we're heading this way.

Oh, no, no, that doesn't look good.

We need to keep our eyes open and I've got to be super careful in here.

Oh, no, this light is really starting to die. Come on.

Oh, it's completely out.

Well, I guess that's as far as we're going with the lantern.

Okay, there's a cockroach.

There.

[spits]

[groans]

This cockroach tastes like it's been living in this tunnel…

for a very long time.

[exhales sharply]

A bit of energy to be moving on with. Come on, then.

We're making such slow progress in this pitch-black.

I think it's time to use the lantern,

fire up some light and try and make some progress now.

[squeaking]

-You hear that? -[squeaking]

Rats.

Okay.

Oh, that's better.

Now we've got light, we're really going to be able to pick up the speed

and try and get through this. Come on.

[squeaking]

Ugh, my stomach.

Ugh, it's that millipede.

[groans]

It's got a really strong taste to it.

I keep getting, like, bile coming back.

Oh, hold on. Hold on.

[groans]

[vomits]

[panting]

[puffs] Oh, it's better out.

[sighs]

Let's keep going.

It's an old door.

[grunting]

[strenuous grunting]

This place is crazy.

[suspenseful music playing]

[clattering]

It's like an old bucket or something.

Actually, look, it may be a helmet.

[echoing]

Listen to that, though.

Much more of an echo.

It's like this is more of a chamber than a tunnel here.

[grunts]

Okay.

-[clicking] -What is that?

[loud explosion]

[groaning]

Oh, my head.

[groans]

[groans] I must have triggered some

tripwire.

But my memory's back.

[groans in pain] My leg is really wedged under here.

I'm not going to be getting to Captain Joe in a hurry.

[grunting]

Looks like we're going to be trapped in here

for a while.

Oh, daylight.

And that is a sight for sore eyes.

It feels like a long time to have been trapped in. [pants]

I just feel so weak.

Having not moved for so long…

my leg's not 100%.

Oh, that's the plane.

Right down there, you see it on the edge of the cliff.

[intense music plays]

Captain!

Joe!

[sighs] Oh, no, we're too late.

Joe!

Where's Joe?

And is he okay?

Captain Raynor!

I can't help thinking what would have happened

if I hadn't tripped that wire.

But at least we can go back, or just start over and try again.

Let's make some different choices this time,

because until we rescue Captain Joe, we're never going to give up.

Okay, let's follow up here.

Got another one here.

Something's kicked over that rock.

All this grass pressed down here.

[low growling]

[whispering] Something is definitely up there.

It that's what's done the damage…

to the remains of that cockpit

I want to be really careful here.

[ominous music playing]

-[Joe yells] -[Bear groans]

[Bear pants]

-Bear? -Oh, yeah.

-I'm sorry, Bear. -[Bear groans]

-Oh, Joe! -I thought you were a crazy animal.

Oh, my God. A crazy animal?

Yeah, I scared him away, but he's around here.

-So, we have to move. -[grunting]

Joe…

-Captain Raynor. I remember you now. -Yeah!

Of course.

Strongest man I know.

Worst pilot I know.

-Nice to see you. -[both grunt]

-You're alive, wow. -Yeah.

Oh, it's good. I can remember stuff and I can remember my family now.

You know, got high mountains, bad.

We want to head down to the valley. Look.

-You see down there? -Yeah.

[Bear] All of the green, the trees?

Forest means resources, shelter, water, food

and once we get right down to the bottom of the valley,

we'll follow it out and we'll find people.

-Okay, so, let's go, right? -You ready for this?

-Always, my man. -Feeling good?

-Still steep grounds, take it easy. -[grunts]

[emotional music plays]

[Bear] Right, so, good job.

Great job. Your survival skills were on full alert.

Now we're going to get rescued in no time.

But what was that animal?

Should we start over from the beginning?

Or should we go back and make some different decisions

to see if we can find out?

[closing theme music playing]
