I'm Jimmy Blanks

the director of Urban Legend and I'm here with

I love that horse that's coming here

this is Michael Rosenbaum and I play Parker and funny

here's and this is Sylvia Orton

I am the screenwriter this is Sylvia and my first movie

as professionals in the industry

Sylvia had written one script prior to this

but this is the first one he actually sold

and it's the first movie that I've ever directed

so

very special moment for both of us doing this picture

we started together at the beginning of the year where

hold my hand Jamie

hold my hand yeah

I know it was kind of like that

it was it was it was really funny

uh

a lot a lot of people in this movie were quite young

the um producer Gina

this is her first movie as well and um yeah

big movie for the people of Phoenix as well

this is a big big uh production they meant of this year

so everybody's young everybody's young

I started puberty prior to this movie yeah

it's really an experience get hair

it was I'm not gonna talk about that

I was glad to be there for them

I Learned to drive during this fast

hang on my name is coming out now

so this is our opening sequence

this is actually constructed out of a lot of shots that

we got

his second unit this is some of the stunt work we did

where the killer falls into the river

at the end of the movie so

we use the tops of these shots to make a little title

montage so here we go

here's Michelle Mancini

this is Natasha Gregson Wagner in her four wheel drive

coming along a deserted road leaving Pendleton College

and we're going to uh

meet this girl

and interesting sequences when we uh

we had to pick a very large vehicle to uh

to house the killer to do a little sequence which uh

involves the ex and the killer in the backseat

we had to find a very big car

so we could actually

swinging axe inside a car like this

so we looked at a lot of four wheel drives

and actually this is the biggest one we could find

this is the Ford Expedition so here is Natasha

you know I wrote a Land Rover original

original was a Land Rover

yeah we couldn't

Land Rover

wasn't big enough to get all the cameras and things

and so we needed to get

so that upset you as a writer of Sylvia

or you totally messed by me

I missed the concept

just did the whole scene just doesn't work for me

I understand that I really understand that

so well

this wasn't actually scripted

I don't believe this a little near miss

but it adds some excitement

doesn't it Jamie

yeah we hope it does

my heart's and another answer to your

originally I wrote this it was supposed to be snowing

that's right

a lot of this movie was was gonna happen in the snow

and um

I remember that was gonna prove a little too difficult

logistically for our production

so you opted for an ice storm

which didn't make it any easier

so we that also upset well

I just stopped visually yeah

so we see the ice storm

it would look beautiful

I would have loved to have to watch the movie like that

but shooting it was gonna be a different story song

was this your idea this is my idea yeah

this was your idea Sylvia

this is Bonnie Tyler it's Bonnie Tyler Jamie

I wasn't a big fan of this song before before the movie

and I am unless a fan of the film

of the song after the movie

now I've heard this so many times

the editing process just killed me

I don't know how many times this is true

something funny about the song

of the first night we all got together

it was Rebecca the whole Castle pilots right

let's say Range Rover for Silvio sake

it was in the car we had we had Neil Moritz

Neil Moritz we had Gina Matthews

Michael McDonald the three produced Cassie Bradoff

Jackson Josh

Alicia Tara

Silvio and the stolen meals Jeep

I think we were drinking

but the driver wasn't of course

because we don't we don't drink that we don't do

that we do not and then all of a sudden

I'm changing the station cause they're bitching at me

change the station and

you know and all of a sudden the song comes on

but it wasn't just the song

it was the disco remix of it

yeah it was crazy

it was kind that was like

the night before we started shooting the movie

so it was a weird omen yeah

it was weird so here's

Natasha's pulled into the gas station from hell

is it Natasha or is it Natasha

no no

no I like to make fun of Natasha

he's from Australia yeah

you like to make fun of me

I love you I'm used to being made fun of

so she's in the rain

and we're about to meet Brad Durriff

who's been a being a fan of Brad's

Brad's been in some areas

if you need some a lot of movies

so we're very lucky to get bread for this role

he was he just come off

doing the voiceovers for bride of Chucky

I believe at this point

so he was into Toronto and he was no

he had to come into Toronto for a film

he done all the recording in LA but he was great

we worked for bread with bread for three nights

and we had a great time he's a great guy

incredible incredible actor

incredibly intense yeah

great and totally focused on what he was

doing and he's kind of

we originally wanted the character to be what Billy

Billy Babbitt was a bad from what's over the yeah

we were gonna we were gonna call his character Babbitt

but but we opted not to do that

in my hand probably didn't like that

so there goes Brad

is actually an article in shangaria

where he talks about the fact that he's only

he's not gonna do another stuttering role

and that was like 20 years ago

in addition from Fangoria ever

so then this is his first stuttering never say never

ever say never came back so but he did a fabulous job

it was just we really wanted to drag this sequence out

quite a long time

really milk the most out of the isolation

this girl's feeling in the car

a lot of overheads to really show the

the helplessness and the isolation

Brad's kind of

kind of disturbing this girl at the moment

she does not want to get out of the car

so this is a great scene that

I remember reading the script

the first time I read it was just blew me away

I wanted to make the movie after reading the first 10

15 pages because it was so exciting

I would have

you told me it was after the first two pages yeah

well everything little sorry

so we jeez

this is a kind of thing I would love to have done

at film school or something as a little short film

like a 10 minute movie or this is

it's it's perfect

it's got a twist I

I was delighted to do this

and she's strong

which is good a lot in a lot of horror movies like

oh god she's so weak and why are you doing that

but she gets the maze she's a fun girl

we like her she's singing along spunky

she's a Dag is good if I'd say spunky

it's a good shot I like that shot

so when they go you're the writer I'm not

and this is really I remember Brad was

we were trying to work his character out

we hadn't had a lot of rehearsal time

he kind of just showed up on set

we auditioned once and he's perfect

I'll give him the role he turns up on set

and we didn't get to do a lot of work

workshopping character or anything

but Brad had a few ideas

and I remember he asked my prop guy

do you have a plug in Jesus

like electrical plug in Jesus thing that you plug into

electrical outlet

and it's one of those they glow in the dark

you know things

my prop guy had a plugging Jesus in the props truck

he had a Jesus box he pulls it out as just like

everything to do with Jesus

so these guys are incredible

they were amazing props guys

run twisted jet as well twisted

messed up guys

I love them I love this shot

yeah huge shot there

crane shot my yeah

big crane shot with a hot head

I believe a 3 x is hot head

that we use quite a lot in this movie

and she love using those words

yeah maybe

maybe it was I was

I was the first time director in the lovely stuff

was really excited cause I could

it is a shop that I wanted to pay homage to the Hitcher

I do this a little bit in the movie

there's some my favorite movies at all

occasionally have a little shot that's a

a homage to a certain movie

now this sequence

I had worked out very heavily in advance

is exactly how I wanted they were feel to work

this is lightning flashes

which illuminate the back of the car

see nothing at first and there it goes

here he comes up

so that that was always storyboarded to work like that

so I'm very happy with how the secrets came together

here's the axe audiences freak out at this point

they do this watch this

yeah here we come

oh there we go

and I followed part yeah

look at the editing on that

there's a capacity

beautiful is like a reverse gag

we had the axe up to her neck

and then we just ripped it away

and it looks like reverse actually coming off

but it's not yeah

I don't think it was it

was kind of what we wanted to do with the movie

is really um

keep a lot of the Gore off screen

but make the audience feel

through cutting and through the imagery

that they're actually seeing

something a lot more graphically

look at that looks like a Tombstone that yeah

this is a second unit shot

we did actually a lot later in the schedule

Michael McDonald my produce

one of the producers in my second unit director

went back to Toronto to get some additional footage

like some helicopter shots

and that was one of the shots that we got

originally the way this sequence was structured

after the kill was we would go to

Brenda and Natalie

going to Stanley Hall to do the Bloody Mary sequence

but uh in editing we uh

we actually re resequence these events

so that we went straight to the radio station

then to the coffee shop

then to the Bloody Mary sequence

mainly because we wanted to get your

telling of the story set up

so those on the girls went to the hall

we already knew what the whole backstory to

Stanley Hall was right

that was that was and this is my girlfriend Terry

who's very fun to work with

so cute Terry Terry is incredible in this movie

she's she's gonna be a big big star yeah

I love this dialogue Sylvia

this is great remember

we had quite a few radio conversations that we had

scripted the original

the the first opening scene had the lesbian

that's right that's right

we originally stopped yeah

yeah we had and here's the big Java Row scene

this is where we're really all introduced

there you are that's that's Michael Rosenbaum folks

look at that is Rebecca and Alicia and he comes Jared

Jared let him all into it

introducing all that characters here

so

Michael's gonna launch into the story of Stanley Hall

right you know

I used for

this is if your big horror movie fans out there

if you go back to return of the Living Dead

and what was the character's name

it was James Karen's character Karen they played

it was it was Ernie and the other guy was burnt

it was early yeah

it was the medical supply place

and telling him the story and he's so

and I remember just being so intrigued

and listening to the story

Richard living that is a classic

I think it's an I think it's a great movie

some horror movie and we're just huge horror fans here

so I just kind of

got that feel that he was just really enjoying

telling the story scaring this kid

and so I wanted these guys to really get

excited about what I was talking yeah

and think is he telling the truth

cause I don't know I thought the more intense

what did he say in that movie about the uh

they ship the bodies here and the phone rings and it's

yeah there's a bit of that in your performance art

I really like yeah

so no I was even toying with the idea

at one point in pre production

of actually showing some of these images

while you were telling the story about

the mad professor killed the floor students

we're gonna see some abstract shots

maybe feet going up the stairs

and

that would have been the hand knocking on the course

you wouldn't get to see me as much though would you

well we didn't want to cut down

your screen time would be really upsetting

we already said

we already cut your sex scene out of the movie Michael

so I know we cut my sex scene which we have

so we will one of the wonders of DVDs

is the supplemental stuff that we can include

as filmmakers we can show you

some of the stuff that didn't make it through

the movie but we still wanna show you these things

because we shot them and for whatever reason

the movie I think with the

we had another scene that we never even shot

which would have been a lot of fun to to do

it just felt it felt at a place in the movie

I think when we did our first table reading

with the whole cast before we

the shoot was that sequence with Doug

the council yeah

the therapist yeah

do you want to

do you want to elaborating it more on that sequence

it was a funny thing so yeah yeah

it came right after well man you know

I'll be I'll talk about it after yeah

when we get to that point in the movie all right

so anyway

this is the story animosity between Jared and Michael

there's a little more we got to have a little fun

we play with each other a lot yeah

and that was fun Jerry was fun to play with

and unfortunately in a movie

you really have to flow with the story

so yeah and so we can

there's a lot of improv going on and I love improv yeah

and you know

you can only add so much to a movie without you know

bring it away from the story

that's right which I understood

but I was it's always something we want to encourage

is lot of improv

stuff that actually made it through the movie

that a lot of people did so anyway

here's half the shot that originally was uh

beautiful

was going to go immediately after the axe killing

it was a big we had two cranes to get this shot

we went a lot of trouble but Stanley Hall uh

when we re

ordered the opening sequences around a little bit

just the film couldn't

really contain that shot in its full length

there was gonna be a few title cards

go over that last shot there

so we we use half of it anyway

but it was a beautiful shot

they're so beautiful it's still beautiful

it's a beautiful shot and the girls are beautiful oh

everyone's beautiful in this movie

it's a Hollywood movie

it's beautiful it's got its own style sure

so here we go into into Stanley Hole

now this this sequence I've never heard this

urban legend at the Bloody Mary thing

maybe it's an American thing

I've never heard it in Australia

no that's how you Australians you were us

he's a can't deal with you anymore yeah

crazy guys over there playing with the kangaroos yeah

I'm not gonna promote any Australian stereotypes

I love Australian so

I'm gonna visit you and stay with you for a long time

yeah when I come out there am I welcome maybe haha

but I this sequence here we introduce Josh

and it's a huge scare

I remember shooting it over and over and over again

I just didn't quite get the reveal how I wanted it

and ended up using a take that I

that I originally hadn't

hadn't even ear marked is a really great print take

there it goes right there

but with with the cutting and everything

it seemed to work everyone always jumps

the film still playing theatrically

it's only three weeks after the theatrical release

of the time of doing His country

and it's the time people get this

it's gonna be maybe March or April yeah

or whatever but at the moment yeah

it's three weeks in so

I had a lot of fun

going to check out some sessions with people incognito

just opening night we

no one recognizes me

I kind of go with you to watch a movie though

you get recognized a lot yeah

but you know

that's all right and

and here we go

we're about to launch into another stinger

uh it's kind of unusual

I haven't seen this done in a movie um

very many times at all have

in such quick succession to stings

here we go run

so the audience always jump out of there

where'd you find this guy

the janitor look how distinct this man is

oh he's incredible

look that's Julian Richings

he's a wonderful Canadian actor

uh he was in a Funko Hardcore logo

as well as lots of other things

but Julian was um fabulous

here we go he's Danielle Harris uh

genre fans love her anymore Halloween

genre fans will know her from Halloween 4 and 5

she also played Bruce Willis daughter in Last Boy Scout

and she was in daylight and she's on her go

there she goes her go

she really uh

she really didn't like this guy

and the concert that I blame is a pretty scary guy

it's just some hey

maybe listen to this Jamie

sure maybe he

he does not he won't count

hey he was

he did a great job he looked

he was great perfect for the knowledge Danny

I was a little little nervous doing that stuff

here we go here's some here's some

this is a shot that we just got one night

while we're waiting for dark

just reshot the song we ended up using it

he's a helicopter shot

we did a second unit later after the fact

we needed we needed some stuff

to just open the film up a little bit

show the college

I can't remember where that particular college was

but here we are back at university of Toronto

where we did most of the shooting

and we're about to introduce Robert and and there is a

he was so great

as soon as his name came up as a you know

as an option for that role

I was just off he's it's got to be him

he's the reason I did this movie

I heard Freddy Krueger was gonna be in the movie

oh I was sold

Sylvia and I were just sold so this was uh

location was Convocation Hall

which is part of the university of Toronto

and it was massive we it was awesome

it was like an arena like a big stadium at and I mean

I'm in this shot you are in a shot behind me

and if you were there is

there is Silvio and my good buddy Edgar

who can't see him yet there's no right behind Mike

yeah Michael's heads blocking Silvio sorry

I have a big head my bad

more Michael there I lean forward

weren't you waiting for him to go Tina

this is gone

you and I were betting we were Freddy lines the home

there I am

there is Sylvia there I have to go look back again

just rewind them

we tried to do a lot with cameos in this film

wherever possible I tried to get

you know

like people into the movie and stuff who were up there

had a couple of friends popped up during the shoot

we got my

my two brothers are in their brother party sequence

I was trying a lot in this system yeah

I'll point them out when we get there

there's some chewing a lot

because initially

they had the bagel scene where I'm talking

and that's right Josh

was gonna take up the brown paper bag from the bagel

and pop up and powder as part of his act

but I ended up not doing that on the day

and I think Robert England's watch

didn't we originally have planned

it was like to play yeah

like a racha or so yeah

supposed to take a pill did that yeah

it was gonna take a pill

cause we were gonna learn later

when Jared goes to his office

said he was suffering from bipolar disorder

and multiple danger it is no

but I think you know

Robert's character created enough suspicion

without drawing any extra attention to it

so but he's wonderful is we shot this sequence

I would just we

pretty much

have one camera running for the whole thing

and I would just set up for a particular angle

and just run the whole run the whole scene

you know every time Sylvia comes in there

right there right there

yeah these writers who wanna be actors

I don't get haha

so we would actually

this sequence was really a lot of fun to cut because I

I would just run the whole sequence a

a to B and just grab everything

you know pretty much from one angle

do a bit of correcting with a dolly and everything

so we would reframe as we doing right here

but we were just pretty much cutting into long

running take so the performance is wonderful

cause the actors had a lot of time to get into it

yeah and we went cutting and dropping in

halfway through there so they Sylvia and acrobatic

she was sick to her stomach

oh my poor

poor Becker ate so many Pop Rocks this day

it was not funny she said she got sick from it

I think yeah

but you know those women actresses

she was a real trooper there's Mike

I didn't know he was

that was improvisation that was improv and it worked

it was a Jamie I gotta say Mikey likes it

no one has as was Josh's

yeah baby yeah

but a little long

what was that from now that that is the real Mikey

that is the real Mikey

however many years later looks like I'm still yeah

I gotta confess I didn't know Mikey

we didn't get Mikey did you not

we didn't get lifestyles cut my stuff

you don't understand yeah

almost almost

the complex

complex for my cultural Barry that comes big as Josh

he was a joy to work with Josh

Josh Jackson

was one of the most wonderful people to work with

just ever it

just really committed incredibly professional

a lot of the crew had a real

real hard time accepting that he was 19 years old

a lot of them are really

he turned 20 at the end of the shoot

actually on his 20th birthday

we did some second unit stuff

where he bashed his head around a lot

and we got those little inserts

where Josh is getting the rope around his neck

he could dream that was on Josh's birthday

so the poor guy was expecting to leave Toronto

and get back to me he could dance in the beers with you

study my my method acting right here

incredible performance by Sylvia there

I I really believe that something was happening

I remember Terry got up on stages

day to help with some of the extras

when we cutting away to extras right there

who's that that's Edgar

Edgar my man Edgar my

my assistant who worked on this whole movie

fabulous and we got Edgar in the movie

a couple of times so remember these uh extras

we're having a bit of trouble reacting uh

we didn't have Robert or anyone on stage to um

them to act off

so when Terry got up on stage and started

you know like screaming at them

and we got a couple of good reactions at Jay

was it we had a lot of fun that day

it was a lot of fun and we launch into the quadrangle

now this confuse a couple of people

I remember at our test screening

that the papers already lunatic on campus

but the murder happened off campus

so we dropped in a couple lines with ad Ariel here

like she was a sophomore wasn't she there

and yeah she was uh she just left campus

I think you hear somebody say just to help tied in

that girl had been leaving Panelton

the killer had gotten I don't see any confusion yeah

I don't know what you're talking about

Sylvia was never confused about it

Sylvia's a little upset when

drift a little away from the spring

but it's interesting sometimes these

these things don't become apparent

because we know them as as the filmmakers

we know what we're trying to say but

but occasionally people misread

so here we go

here we introduce John Neville and Loretta Divine

that was so wonderful to work with

I think Loretta was everything you imagined

that character to be she is exactly right

yeah I remember when the two of us got together

Reese was originally gonna be like a lesbian

or something like that and we in the original draft

yeah

this was a lesbian she was carrying on with one of the

yeah and I remember she didn't do anything at the end

I was

I think

we wanted to get her more involved in the action

towards the end of the movie

so

she did have that great lesbian love scene at the end

yeah which I was really looking forward to directing

but that would have stayed in the movie

we sure we opted to make race a little more fun

she said fan of these exploitation movies

of the Pan Greer films and everything

so we decided to go that way and I'm glad we did

it gets a really big moment

where she turns to the Foxy Brown poster later

and it's a lot of fun there

so actually we just I meant to point out this

Alicia's father was in the shop there earlier

there's a there's a bearded gentleman

in the shot with Rebecca and Alicia earlier

homage to the Alfred Hitchcock waves yeah

he's put himself in the movie

and accommodating by you in the movie

I didn't want to be in the movie you know

that's a whole another story

I just thought

I didn't feel the need to be in the film okay

McDonald so here we go

we named the Brad's character after my producer

Michael McDonald and the news reporter there

is actually named after my assistant director

my first ad David Macery

and you'll notice where the film is set

in the fictitious place of Melbourne

New Hampshire

just a little homage to my Australian background there

I just want to hear

I did like this joke that was here Jamie

there was like some cuts here too

we had a couple of jokes you said

you said she says

oh yeah

my radio show you say yeah

one minute you figure out where your G spot at

the next your head is too far away to see it

yeah you finally find out where your G spot is

the next your head's too far away to see it

she smacks me it's funny

but you know

it came off a little cold

oh cool and

and which is fine I hadn't

I hadn't I hadn't anticipated though how

how your character

you're always kind of confrontational with Jared

how that would affect later on

so I decided to soften that a little bit

by taking that line out

but these are incredibly bad taste

he bleached Josh Jackson with a blonde

so we cut to Rebecca groaning

hopefully echoing the audience of sentiments

at the bad taste joke and here we are

back to a lot of people's favorite character

Tosh is back Daniel Harris

here we go she was actually was just great

more Tosh she was

I think Tosh should kind of her own TV

spin off sitcom or something called Tosh Awesome

so yeah

she she got here her lithium that was hilarious gosh

she got a few issues she's this I mean

she is the complete antithesis of this role she plays

she is such a sweet little actually as written

Tosh was a lot nastier I think

Danielle kind of brings a little more comedy to it yeah

she's a lot more likeable on screen

than I originally anticipated

she still can play the bitch pretty well though

can't she she does great

this is my phone line go baby cyber junkie yeah okay

so here we go

Alicia's gonna get check the answer machine messages

now this is always a

a point in ADR

where we thought we might be able to add stuff

that we might needed to know about a character

whatever but we are we ended up

you know simplifying these originally

Alicia was gonna grab the shrieker

which was one of those little sonic

personal alarm devices that you would use

if you're in danger a woman would would

would spread and would

would send off some earpiece ear piercing shriek

and then we got Simone

who was a Michael McDonald's assistant to

to wear the 80s makeup and the big hair

and we even made the packaging for this thing

but we ended up cutting a little

device out of the movie in the end

this is cool how you did that

so I guess

you just curled her hair and took some pictures yeah

this was all done while we were shooting

Natasha's opening sequence with

with Brad we had her for a few days

so

we went and some local Toronto cheerleading group got

got out to sit and we just took some cool shots

and he's Josh look at this little slimeball

we have so much fun in throughout Joshua

you and Josh you and Josh are always partying

we always had a ball we played

we played Bruce Campbell has this PlayStation game

you know Bruce Campbell horror movie thing

he's Bruce Camp Jamie and I was biggest fans workshed

workshed movie don't get me started

I know I'm not gonna get you started but he uh

we play this little PlayStation game in my room

that had Bruce Campbell's voice

he was the character

and we played it for hours and just laughed

and you know he was he was a lot of fun

Josh's I I I really look forward to hopefully

one day doing another movie together

cause we had a great time

he was such a professional

he's a great guy

so here we go into one location to another location

here for the interior stuff

and on the reverses on Alicia

we're in another location all together

so as simple as his little sequence looks

it was actually filmed over a lot of different places

and this is funny

I didn't think now this is gonna work

this was a gag

when we tested the movie the first test screening

this was was ranked as the the favorite scene

that was we shot like

I think 12 or 13 takes

just of Josh doing the thing with the car

and at the end it was like an afterthought

I went to Josh

because you've been giving him so much grief on set

about saying that song that we did

every time he would get out of his trailer

he'd be I don't want to

so I just said to Josh at that on the last take

we had a protected our light

let's just let's get one and go for the radio

and I'll put in that theme song to Dawson's Cricket

it'll be funny and it worked out great

so he was like I wrote that

I want you to know I didn't actually I can't

but it was it was in spirit with the

with the human that Silvio gotten into

the rest of the script

we like the noczema line and everything

so it was kind of that

that territory were coming from us great

so this is one of my favorite scenes in the movie

actually I think just really

really nice reveal

when Josh is kind of calling this girl

and so it's great oh

it's not it and I think Alicia's just behind

just like with the audience enough

I mean we cut it one way

and she was a little bit seemed a little bit slower

picking up on his bullshit vibe

you know so we reacted a little bit

I think this is a great little

Josh kind of has the Vivian Lee character

doesn't he that every expects to see more of

but there's not there's like gently character feels

I'm sorry that's a vivienly down whatever

shut up shut your mouth yeah

yeah

he's a big star which we waste in the first not wasted

utilized as in executed executed

which we which we kill in the third reel

so

but I remember the sequence when I

when I first met the studio

to interview for this movie

I had met with a storyboard artist to go and get a

whole lot of panels drawn for this particular sequence

so I would show them how I might shoot this sequence

and I'm gonna be Sylvia on this

one of the first sequences we talked about

and we worked on it was the first after we met yeah

we got together in my hotel green light on what Tuesday

Tuesday

Wednesday night in my hotel ordering room service

like looking over LA going

I can't believe mascot and LA

we're gonna make actually making a room movie

a real movie yeah

so it took us a couple hours to get up beyond that

and get into some work

I was upset there wasn't blood on Josh's face when you

she punched him

I was really expecting to see blood Jamie

that was a hard punch right

I know people it

I know that I at least he's swelling up later yeah

he gets his doesn't he

so there we have that famous line which

which the people seem more conscious of

now that they've seen scream

that I'll be right back

which means that you won't be right back

you're going to die uh and little bit of uh fun

we're here intercutting between the two of them

I think

a lot of people aren't quite sure who's gonna get it

is gonna be Alicia's gonna get attacked

or is it gonna be Josh

and we sort of carefully intercut between the two

we got the radio and playing incessantly

so it's a nice little sound cut as well

Josh gets distracted

and the audience of jumping out of those well

a cheap gag and

a lot of critics have

accused me of using too many of these stingers

but you know what it's a good

I wanted to make a fun movie for for big audiences

and you know that's what it's all about you know

it's about what it whatever works and you know

they're gonna go back to scream a million times with

sure movie it's a standard and we like oh

but just wasn't you know what

we didn't intend this movie to be like scream

I never said I'll scream its own well

you're not a horror movie fan are you

the screen was the screen was a wonderful movie

and all the credit in the world for them to

opening the gates to allow movies like this being made

but uh

it's it's a little frustrating when

you know when you're always being compared to that

but you know so we knew it though

we knew we would be we would

we would cop that but I didn't actually

we would have gotten this movie made

if it wasn't for screen that's right

that's right absolutely

what I wasn't anticipating though

was the comments about how gory

and how bloody and violent this movie is uh

I was conscious of

of that all throughout the production

making sure that uh it wasn't a gory movie

and I remember saying that on so many occasions

there's gonna be no blood

I don't wanna make up a fixed person on set

because we're not gonna need to show that

at any stage in this sequence

so I don't know I wanna

I wanna believe that the the cutting in the sound works

so that

they actually

thought they saw something more violent than what

what they did that's

that's so great

that Gene Cisco thinks this is like this yeah

well glory really

he's like so disturbed by it

he was saddened by the bloodliting about

and it's glory like what are you talking about

and there's yeah

there's barely any yeah

so I think Roger Ebert got it

but he got traditionally

he seems to be the most on the board

the two of them anyway so that didn't surprise me

Roger Ebert said I disagree with you

I think this wasn't a gory movie

I think a lot of comedy I know that

there was a lot of flack for the Gore in this film

so that

that was just one of the things that I was surprised

the opening scene originally she was a car

she was driving that sunroof

that's right she was gonna have her head chopped off

and would fly out of the center

like an like an Evil Dead too with a head

rolls down and turns into a big black wipe

and then they do a continents yeah

that would be that was gonna be like

the intro to the title of the movie

or something that would be gory yeah

so here he goes he's back in the car

this a great sequence

this is the one that we came up with that yeah

we had a written was really yeah

we weren't quite sure how to make it work

cause the killer is a girl

and we knew people when I asked the question

how did she get the body up in the car and everything

so we we sort of

came up with a concept of tying it to the car

so that might you know

like help the physics a little bit

but like you know

yeah but she still had to get it up

she's got to get up the car

you know she's

she was she was

she's a strong girl she swims

she swims she swims

she swims

a lot of people are saying

you know what I really enjoyed the movie

it was really good but this

Rebecca's character her

the killer I don't believe she was that strong

like you know what

go to hell by the way

go to hell cause this is a movie

this is my favorite movie

part is here we go

coffee stuff pancreer stuff

yeah this is great

I think I love this movie

I've seen coffee about 10 times

I remember we were scaring these tapes

looking for the most quotable pot of coffee to use

in the film and this is

this is the one

easy I think it's interesting Neil

Neil Maritz who produces movie

his father actually was I think

one of the people

really heavily involved with AIP Productions

who made coffee originally

so it's kind of a nice little wow

who can there

actually

going back to Brenda being the killer and everything my

my take on the whole film has always been that

what we're watching here and what's unfolding

is one person's version of the story

which we Learned later in the movie

and Brenda's there to say no

no got it wrong

you miss some details

and that was kind of the whole point of it

that kind of yeah

it was kind of didn't quite happen

like you said it

you sort of embellished it to be something else exactly

some people get that some people don't

I'm really happy when people come to me and say

I know what the point of that ending was

it wasn't kind of like a little cheap sequel thing

it was actually

the whole film was kind of a perspective

and it had been embellished

and that's sort of the point

that's what happened to these urban legends anyway

anyway that's that's it

it works logically to me anyway

so um

we were fighting to get the sun this day

we were fighting to beat the sun

I should say

okay back in the coffee shop

this was a tough scene wasn't it

a tough scene for you I mean

you and Tara was

this is

cause what happened was they were shooting the scene

we started about 10 o'clock in the morning

and we were shooting reaction shots

which is stone pissed off about

but I understand Jamie

reaction shots of Alicia and Rebecca

and I'm the one who has all the dialogue

as you can see in the scene

and I was like okay alright

so of course dumbass here

Michael Rosenbaum I start giving it

you know give them all I have

which you should give to your act yeah

that's what I've Learned

so we ended up getting to my scene about midnight yeah

we were rushed we had to get out of there

there's like 1,000 producers in front of me

by the end of the night we wanted to get out of there

the set was completely rearranged

everything was just right

in your right line of the girls are ready to go home

every yeah the Mona it was it was a tough scene

sometimes they call it an actor gets spooked

a little ghost

I think Tara and I were just a little bit you know

like what the hell

we couldn't get it happens and it happens

and we did what we needed to do

we stopped we took a little break and that's happens

it happens all the time and

and if that's the only look that

I think

that was the only time we had any experience like that

in this movie so you're forgiven for that bro

and then you think this is right

you know a lot of the same in the trailer

so it actually turned out really well

I think

I'm just for a critical on myself as most actors

but it was it worked backseat

so there's some great stuff here Rebecca

I think if you watch it a second time

there's just some little looks

and things that she gives

which is fine cause she is the killer

so some stuff you can pick up on in there

but a lot of these uh scenes in the in the Java joint

we we cut down a little bit

we we

we we made some trims and things here and there yeah

there were some good stuff

it just it began to get a little talky

we had the loop here we have a bit of looping

you put spider eggs and bubblegum

or maybe ran the gerbil up a celebrity's ass

come on Nat

give Damon a call of the Killington

all right you'll see he's there

they call me

you guys call me a Dave or two before the premiere yeah

the premiere is about to run you up

we need to do looping I'm like

kiss my ass we will work on this issues Jamie

you were so you look more pissed than I was

I was like what

are you guys kidding me

I have to do looping or with the premieres tomorrow

come on it was kind of like symptomatic of everything

and also happened in post

it was very rushed

we wanted to make a certain date for the release

so we had to really move uh

shooting and and editing right up

so we're with some of the things we jam

we decided to say instead of bubblegum

we try to say we try to make my

what I was saying with what

oh yeah bubble gum bubble bubble bubble gummer

but you know we got it

is the library sequences this was a very

very effective sequence

I thought just love this location

it looks a lot bigger on camera than it actually was

it was a very small little room there we go

someone's very intense seems very intense

let me here we go

my poor steady cam operator

Pete Rosenfeld had to get up on that little

tiny balcony with a steady cam for this shot here

you know what I love about this

when it's coming up here it gets very disorientating

I think once we do a cut to a close up there

you sort of get confused which way we were looking at

the yeah

either direction of these rows of books looks the same

so it's like The Maze and The Shining in a way

well that is effective

look what is cool

The Mexican Pet which is one of the books I use

that's right researching this

what was it the author's name John

John Harold Bruvin van yeah

who's the urban legends

he's written a lot of urban legend books and

I love this all right there

look at this I love this

cause they're both really laughing

they're both really this is kind of really a moment

I think wonderful

I think

it's great that we're able to keep some semblance of

spontane 80

because that was take 18 or something that I think wow

and this is set up for that scene that we'll show later

after that's right

yeah this is a little bit of

set up for a deleted scene later

but

it kind of keeps within context of Sasha's character

so we can always get to laughter

yeah sex always gets laughter

everybody's always expecting something after that

you know don't get in the DVD

I remember we had a problem in this location

one of our crew members was a

little disrespectful of the location

and took a slash out the front of something

so we got in trouble here

would you like to elaborate on that

no I don't want to elaborate on it fine

you don't have to mention any names

I just I wanna know

have you here chewing I don't know the name

chewing grapes okay

we're eating we have to eat

so with these these were photo uh

I use the bathroom to go pay

these were illustrations uh

production designer had made up uh

I can't remember the the artist name

but they were wonderful drawings

he made for Rex's classroom

in this book excellent

illustrating the urban legends

oh that was a real book

it's actually a book on Chinese history or something

that we changed a couple of pages in

and added a new cover to so be quiet

yeah I think if you look real close

you can see some stuff you know

in the newspaper articles that dude man hahaha

back to Tosh

now this is kind of fun

this is a variation on the legend about the killer

being inside the house

where we actually used an internet chat

room which was it's a little bit of fun you know

you're not quite

expecting this particular legend to play out like this

but it's it worked out good

we were kind of rushed about a lithium

a little less time to shoot the sequence

then I'd wanted to saw a lot of scenes

we didn't have the time a lot of things happen like

I mean there's the

production designer yeah quit chopping Sylvia

my production designer

is the doctor on the Lithium Bible

and he's also the author of the Urban Legends book

I said you know that see

you guys know that now out there

oh yeah and a lot of this movie we uh

we actually shot at at at night in a real location

so we we really had to jiggle the schedule to to uh fit

length of night like the start of the shoot

we had a lot longer nights and we were having later on

so we had to try and do a bulk of out night

exterior stuff early

which meant a lot of the big stuff early

so this was one of the only scenes in the movie

which is actually constructed on a stage of any sort

that was a network ours

our sex scene yeah

your bedroom and this said here

and Alicia's bedroom

were all constructed on one of those

bathroom right there I guess they all use it don't I

big with that lens on anyway

so she's going back so that it was interesting

shooting a lot of the movie on location

really dictated how the film had to be scheduled

and unplanned for we uh

we had a lot of real big stuff with rain

which really sort of slowed us down

so we had to cry on the nail at early

then that dictated

how much time I had available to do other things

that's why the sequence suffered a little bit

and also your death had to shoot a lot more

which actually came out well

turned out greatness and crazy cutting and

and everything but the rushes we had

we did

only had two cameras running for like three hours

I think except for the last shot that we did

with the big crane shot

we'll talk about that we'll get to that later

but this was a great sequence

one of my favorite sequences from the script

really creepy

it's good sort of like darkly comic as well you know

that's why I think that's what's so scary about it

we kind of know due to the setup earlier in the movie

what Alicia's gonna do

she's not gonna turn on the light

it's great little irony there

I remember recording

we had to get Danielle back to do her ADR

and we had to record all these moans and things

and it was great we

we do use the same uh

sound she was making from the early uh

sex thing with the golf guy

all right as

the same sound

she was making while she's being murdered

we need to cut a few of those

so it lot of looping in this movie

not too much actually

a little more than on a wish we had more for me

and yeah we had a lot of sound problems with the rain

and everything so we had to do some of that

okay here we go

do this a couple of times in the movie

fade up and down I

I hadn't consciously planned to do it lol here

by the way the yeah

we use it a couple times too

but it's kind of nice

little way of moving into the next act

and she's about to find Tosh

now this was um I remember Alicia

during all the scenes involving the carnage

where she would have to see some of the dead bodies

would would really try to avoid looking at the monster

as much as possible to

we actually did a take so um

I think it really helps me paint by the way yeah

there was a thing she was painting half the room black

and it kind of

we kind of like streamline that a little bit

yeah I don't think I don't know if that came across

so here we go yeah

I love that light flashing light

this is my favorite urban legend growing up yeah

it's a great urban legend

you glad you didn't turn on the light

that in the peanut butter yeah

that really happened to me

you better stop back at the university

I want this joke what was this joke right here

very dark I like it

so cold we have the same sense of humor

I think you I think you kind of miss it

don't you kind of miss it

no

I hear plenty people react to think

what you miss sometimes is the crashing sound that we

that caught there yeah

it's on a yeah

bleeds over a bit but there's Jared

Jared watching on we all had a lot of fun

Jared was fun Jared was great

he really really got into it

and Rebecca was just fabulous

we just all of us had a great time together

no Rebecca's watching on his

Alicia and the Dean discussing the murder of Tosh

it's kind of an interesting accident

doesn't he the Dean

he's English he's been doing this for years

I believe he's Canadian yeah

but when he says we can

we can

yeah I thought he's redeemish

I love I love John Neville in this role

he was Baron Moonshows and Terry Gilliam

film genius fantastic

incredible actor

I felt very bad about making him crawl across that

concrete car park for you

want to share what happened on that last day

was on the side we'll get to that

but it but it was a

it was a very hard key so um

we're we're dialogue dialect dialect

remember I wasn't feeling too well

this is the last week of the shooting

I was getting a little bit

little bit run down towards

you have been working a lot Jimmy

we were 53 days of shootings

a long time yeah

didn't didn't get a lot of breaks in this movie

none of us we were all kind of

jamming to get ready for September 25th

never we did a wonderful take

this was the third take I believe

and I Rebecca

at the end of the sequence turn to camera and said

I'm the killer who was great

you should mention the

the school motto oh yeah

yeah when we were doing the chopper

never quite made it into the movie

we had it in a couple of shots

but never really made it but it's a pity because we

in pre production we were

we were developing this this crest for the university

Pendleton's crest

and the Latin insignia at the bottom of the

of the crest read

try and pronounce it amica Optima ed fess it

something like that

the translation of that being the best friend did it

so it was kind of fun it was like a little

little in joke anyone could read Latin

they might have got the gag

but ended up not making it

on the Urban Legend board game

yeah that's coming out next April

yeah yeah

maybe if they make a sequel

I can use it uh

so this was a sequence we reshot actually I remember we

the first scene of the movie when we were doing

starting the shoot was

was the sequence in another location and outside

wasn't it yeah

in front of the in front of Natalie's dorm

but I reshot it because I felt that we

we may be played

the two characters a little cold in that

in that sequence

and having got a bit more of the movie shot

up to this point I decided I wanted to reshoot this

because original was one of the first

first scenes was the first scene first

you know so I called my warm up period

so I gave myself the Grace to reshoot my first thing

because I knew I could do it better

and it visually a lot more interesting this way yeah

I like the hot corridor there yeah

some really nice great Gothic for a beautiful set

I was really impressed

when we were looking for locations

we went to Toronto

and I was delighted with the university

the only problem with it was

was smack bang in the middle of the city

so there's a lot of angles that I just couldn't use

because it would have given away

the locale of the movie

we really wanted this to be isolated and sit

sort of out in the sticks a little bit

so we're about to move into uh the newsroom

this was the real uh campus newspaper

believe it was the uh

the

oh I've totally lost it now

but it'll come to me the real campus newspaper

so we shot one day in here

including all the archive stuff upstairs

which is part of the next sequence

the varsity it was called the varsity

by the way Toronto is beautiful

I mean the people there were oh incredibles incredible

incredible people and um just just really funny

everyone was really into this movie

this is a really good energy about it

now I believe on this little uh

this little pamphlet on the wall

there is some like this leather face

I'm not sure is it really

I'm not sure

I wonder who did that or Jamie Rough like like this

I didn't even ask for that to happen

I hadn't noticed we got there on the set

it's the the guy from Texas Chainsaw Massacre like me

don't you

it's like an outline drawing of it or something

so anyway that's that's that's for the horror fans

anyway

that's right it's funny

that's funny

okay so we're into the

the school archive

where they keep all the old newspapers now

we're about to introduce the janitor another time

another thing

we reintroduce the janitor and this sequence kind of

we were a little rush

so I didn't get all the coverage I needed

but credit to Jared and Alicia

that they're able to pull it off

in one continuous take when we're really pushing them

it was like guys we gotta go

we gotta move on to our next set up

so I think they did a great job

just a sequence just feels a little disjointed to me

because you know

we weren't really

able to get all the coverage that I fully needed

to complete it properly so

uh but it's good

lighting was very tough to do in this particular spot

it was really hard to hide the lights

and just the room was very uh

accommodating for uh for what we needed

but I had to do in a pinch

we lost a lot of locations as we're going on

cause we're juggling in with the school schedule

and our schedule was kinda

getting more and more inflexible

the further we got into it

and around this point is where the

that sex scene would would have gone

the one actually yeah

that's right it would have gone

actually went just before we cut to the newsroom

that was where it was gonna get dropped started yeah

and then it would go to this little section here

and then we would go back to the second part of the 16

so there's actually two stages to the six right

those two yeah

two parts to it so uh

that's where they originally show one part of it

are we gonna show both yeah

no they're both there yeah

both there that's good sex on the way folks

so who does that work is that an urban legend as well

what credit card thing out of the door

I don't know I don't know

I've never tried that but I'm going to in your house

don't break into many offices

your home I'm breaking into America

so I love this set I think my uh

my production design department did an incredible job

it's a lot of stuff in there that we could never have

never have gotten into the movie

but there was just so much detail

it really got into the scene

Robert's character and

I feel a little guilty that I couldn't show more of

the set

that's a nice position to have

if you're worried about not being able to

rather than not having enough

she's another little cheap gag

she opens the door nothing there

opens the other door and we have enough

another big shock but you gotta use

I kind of needed

I kind of felt the movie wanted to have something

at this point

we're getting a lot of exposition stuff happening

getting into the story

so we needed to just give him a little jolt

another criticism always here is the fact that it's a

it's like spring

and everybody's got these huge winter code fitted

remember who originally was written in years now

it was cold it was supposed to be cold

so you know

it's the northeast the northeast

you got those northeasters and yeah

get a little chilly it can happen

my nook of the north spook outfit

what was that the Nook of the north

yeah that's a line from something we cut to

yeah I know

how did you do it

what we did it with that welcome line is that

wrote that look like walking

they had me doing Christopher walking on the satellites

and because you know

at times Jamie would feel like he was going crazy

and just got Rosenbaum do the walking

I'm going nuts man I can't stand you guys

and I do Jamie

it's all right cause the movie's gonna be great

that's gonna gross millions of dollars and it has

hasn't Jamie and so they made me do what it was great

and we had a lot of fun with Kidney Point

I got tired of it though cause it wouldn't let me

so here we go and they're

they're leaving the room now

this I think

was just before we shot Roberts

last scene in the movie where he's dead in the trunk

we had to we only had a rubber for a few days

so how much is that like Robert England make

and they I'm not gonna discuss it but Roberts

Sherry Roberts when you rated for

for the degree of talent that that man is

he's very talented he is very master trained

which I much appreciate

and a nice guy too really nice guy

one of the one of the nicest people

in the movie I think this is a beautiful looking to see

my my DP

Jim Chrysanthes did an incredible job with this movie

we watched a lot of films together before we

before we started shooting

and we looked at things like Catherine Bigelow's

Blue Steel and the original Halloween

and I just gave him a lot of movies to look at for

for various reasons not

you know

Evil Dead 2 was one of the films I wanted to look at

for camera movement and California

California was also another one at Dominic Santa movie

I just I'm a fan of that kind of look

and I really wanted to bring that

that that feel to this film

and I I think you did a really great job

just

a nice variety of lighting styles throughout the film

and just just some beautiful work

also the composer I think

Christopher Young

was just perfect choice for this movie

he totally understands the genre

his office is just like my bedroom at home

with like moving pose movie pose and just

just pumpkins and just hard stuff

every pumpkins he collects

he collects pumpkins he's Jack lanterns really

I like stuff I don't want not like pumpkins

Jake you're sleeping

this is Jason Jay's Christopher Young

this is Chris Young the composer Christian

but did a wonderful score

big big rich core with like vocal choirs and

and a full 90 piece orchestra

so that's so important yet so really wonderful

I mean you look at all the great movies

I mean psycho without

what's his name Bernard

Bernard yeah

exactly and then Jaw Music is incredibly

incredibly incredibly evocative in these films

and Chris loved it I think too

because he really got to stretch out and go big

and like a lot of films don't accommodate

to score that full on and up front

absolutely kind of movie

really benefit and we didn't have a lot of time

I mean yeah

when do we finish we finished end of July

end of July and the movie two months later

yeah it's embarrassing time frame of this

yeah I sold it as a pitch

and July of 96 wait yeah 97

97 arrived in LA and in 96

I sold this in yeah

97 and it was like Greenland in January

January and we began production in April

April 20 April finished

wrapped up June 30

June 29 yeah

wrapped up and somehow you got them

but it's an interesting story about your aunt

and what we did last summer

oh yeah

I should probably tell that story

I had really wanted to make a movie for a long time

since getting out of film school

and I thought what would be the best way would be to

trying to show my student film around town

a little bit and see what some people

how would they would react

and I got a little bit of uh

interest based on that

but I knew that wasn't gonna

ever take me across the finish line

to actually get a directing gig

so I went out uh my manager had sent me a script for

I know what you did last summer

and I decided to shoot

like a three minute trailer for that movie

by taking bits and pieces out of the scripts

that you might use if you're needed to

cutting a trailer and just shoot those things

we cut that together

it was a three minute trailer and $4,000 because we

four grand Australian dollars and

and it was really well received by the studio so um

that's kind of how I got brought onto this movie

through Neil Moritz because of that trail

now Rebecca did all her own swimming stuff and

and whatnot in this movie

she practiced

practice those flip turns for a long time wait

what great form

as you can tell her how she's really sweet yeah

she did a really good job of doing that

we didn't we used to swim double

I think for one of the wide crane shots earlier bang

can you get Greg again has to help her out

this is one thing we've got a lot of flag for them yeah

we caught we caught a bit of flag and I

I can't defend this yeah

I I hi Jamie

before before shooting I was worried about this scene

I never quite felt like I made it work and you know

yeah guilty as charged for that

for that I have to take the fall

I want I wanted not to shoot

I want to find an alternative

but if she was coming from the outside

and if it was like really cold

it wouldn't you know make sense and yeah

I know you know it's the only thing in the movie that

I can't really defend it yeah yeah

my instinct yeah

made me aware of it before so with you

I'm gonna take the fall

so we go flashback sequence that we

we constructed a lot of handheld stuff

and a lot of bleach

bypass work on the NEG to create that Halo effect

I really see it's very cool

see a bit of that stuff in like Oliver Stones movies

like JFK and sees that effect a few times

your turn but a beautiful look

and I just wanted to give it something that would

you know salad as part of Alicia's memory

it's not like

we're not looking literally at events unfolding

this is her memory of the events

we wanted to do something stylistically that would

echo that idea some beautiful work by Jim

cause yeah this here

and I love the music here too it's really beautiful

Alicia did a wonderful performance uh

for the sequence I remember uh

I think a lot of what's finally in the movie is

is her first take and we used a little bit

of some other takes for a couple of moments

but most of what you're seeing here is the first take

I think she did a great job

so when we're getting into the the crash

you didn't quite

work out as elaborately as I wanted to

but we use a bit of a white frame of effect there

in a sound effect which makes me orange so good

he was our age

now is that actually natural tears

it's real tear

I felt bad

I had to cut into this to use all these moments here

but I kind of felt like cutting into

people would think oh

that's just like a frontier that was a real tear

people don't understand how hard it is for

that was an incredibly hard thing

for what you have to do is really stare at the light

she did it was a really hard scene

and I think she did a great job

we had to shoot in

like a men's change room or something after yeah

this this I was there we had a we had a scene that was

that's right it was cut

it was seen where um the girls are walking

that's right the saying that I jump out and scare them

and it's one shot

that was a beautiful choreograph one shot sequence yeah

we had to cut out explains about the dog

that you'll see in the sex scene

where the dog jumps it's right here where yeah

they're walking up and I jump out and then I explain it

this is part part of that scene that never quite yeah

made it in its entirety but it was interesting scene

and the whole point of that was to

it was to establish it

maybe Damon was still behind the scenes

right impractical jokes

and it was just

it was just to reinforce that idea in the story

so here we go into uh

the newsroom again now it's interesting

Jared's about to find the newspaper here in his drawer

which uh

is it yeah

dignifies all the in

it gives him all the information about Stanley Hall

that it's me missing

and it just proves that it was a real event

and the school had tried to suppress it

but some people think that

that photograph is the janitor

that's actually a photograph of headshot

Robert Anglin playing works

but some people think uh

it's it's him

the newspaper looks really

good

I never even it was preserved carefully

so the idea obviously

being

the janitor has found this paper and given it to him

but he's kept it yeah

he's kept working he's been there for all his time

this is a cool scene so you'll see later in the

in the sequence

the dean's license plate reads don't tread on me

so there's a picture behind his dad

that's right yeah yeah

how is that yeah

just a little guy that's the main foreshadow

insignia on the license plate so I love how he uh

let's check the backseat it's funny

this location also had uh

had some stuff that I I

I could have used that was existing like some signage

it had signage saying

please check your backseat and look like I got there

I thought my eye department put it up

but it was actually there

and I don't really say check your backseat

check your backseat lock your car

check your backseat and I just

I thought if I shut it and use it in the movie

it's gonna look so hokey and contrive

people think that absolutely

but it was actually there at the at the thing

it's funny

so I like this is kind of like X files lighting

which is a bit of fun game

tell him how he says hands

he's on the X file when I have this whole video

I'm just gonna rewind it over and over to that again

again weekend farm

I was I wasn't sure how this farm animal

I was gonna work

until we actually got on to sit and deliver it

and I knew it would be funny

that was really good but Lorrata's great here

this is a little bit improv at the end

that's great because he is

what I love about this scene is it reminds me of a

a moment in Pet Cemetery where Judd

oh yeah ankle slits that's right yeah

the kid was his name gauge and this is an urban legend

I cut that yeah it isn't really Achilles

I cut that back a little bit

we had a very realistic effect of that

switchblade slicing through those ankles

but it was unwatchable

it was so awful we just really had to cut it back no

this is I mean

at least you should give Cisco something you know

really cry about email the secrets to

so he's crawling away out of the path of this car

this is a funny gag I think this is

I've never seen this done before

using these parking spike things to

to waste some karaoke whack

there he goes

and now you're gonna see the don't tread on me right

uh it would say some

don't back up severe tie damage or something like that

that's cool he dies this part of the sense of humor

this movie is very silly and fun and yeah

and we're into our exterior fraternity house job

this is some optical digital stuff we did later

wasn't this an insane asylum man

this building was was part of that complex

it's the Lakeshore Psychiatric

something like they shut the Police Academy movies

there it was my brother Tim serving drinks back there

and there's me with the dog

this is I got this dog an hour before we shot

which was kind of cool

this dog was not liking me for the most part

and the funnel we we put on the side of its mouth to

yeah he didn't really feed the dog beer

there's my other brother there's Ben Ben Blanks

and this guy was great is Bilaj Kooz

I think was his name

he was incredible playing nerdy guy

I think he's just great he's a lot of fun there

looks like Sean Penn kind of doesn't he

little Sean Penn and from uh

I don't think Sean Carlito's way

like that reminds me that guy from Eraserhead actually

so there's a

my brother picked a really good spot for his cameo

cause he managed to get into a lot of shots back there

as the DJ and did a good job

here we go is a

the theme of this party in

in the script was kind of like as an urban legend

sort of massacre bash sort of vibes

so there's a few outfits that you see

the woman with the big hair

that's the urban legend about the

the spider eggs in the in the hairdo or whatever

and right yeah

just remember Jamie

someone when I did that little thing in NYU last week

somebody came up to me afterwards and it's like

who played the DJ in the uh in the frat party

and like I didn't even know it was your brother

and you said that is it some actor from Texas

Chainsaw Massacres

I said no I don't think so

don't make sure I tell him

you'll be very flattered hear that

no no

and this was a scene that I had a lot of trouble with

personally

cause it's like a love scene and and you don't like

I don't I it's not me

you know I

it was a little difficult for me to understand these

are you saying you're not a passionate man

I'm a passionate guy

I just in terms of what I do with filmically

it's not my forte but uh

you know it's kind of like we persevered

I I think this I think they did a good job

they really they really sold as

a bit of passion between the two of them there

so I found it to be sexy right yeah

it's a I got a little missed yeah yes

I'm crying excuse me for saying it's your application

but uh you know

really

nice little bit of score here that Chris introduced and

um I think it was really nice

performance between the two of them again yeah

it was nice some great lighting from Jim again

and overall the whole movie

I was very excited about the the look

this is a perfect spot for me to say hello to

my friends in Nashville Tennessee

my big horror movie fanatics are gonna be watching this

one of the horror movie fans is Bob Ziegler

and my friend James out there

and Danny and Jonathan and Matt Ballard

I love those guys so there they go

they're my right movie fanatic friends and I love them

I want that 10 seconds of commentary time

so it comes Rebecca

thank you it'll

it was busted

oh that was just

bad news

what was all that about I don't know Jared

so here we go back to our exterior fraternity house

we actually had a whole sequence that we

we didn't use in the movie where Tara

Tara's character says goodbye to Alicia

and Alicia tries to talk rather leaving

but we ended up um changing

changing that happens inside now

and it's more of a conversation with you

as we got more important shows

your character was

say goodbye before you're often killed

right now

another sequence here

that I originally didn't have in my first cut

but I put back into the movie

because I just wanted to see

see a little bit more of Loretta and it kind of boo

that was actually love that

but that line it was was created by Mike Metavoy

the the prisoner of Phoenix Pictures

he's that was that was that was his guy

I think it worked out great

it always gets a laugh that a little crash

fear that the offscreen Smash Bear works wonderfully

if you got a good surround system

you'll hear it

but everyone in the audience is really funny to look at

the mail turn to look behind them

it sounds like something's broken in the theater

cause it's really placed spatially in that

let that rear lift speaker yeah

it worked out really well hello

he is wixus office old trash

I love her little gun

to just depicts her being like a rent a cop in a sense

you know the security camp is going on

we learn later later on

Loretta has a charm or has another

Loretta's got a Barretta

a serious serious arsenal hair disposal

hmm now we go back in here

now Loretta wasn't present for the earlier scene

but as the audience

we realized that the Parker is missing

and we soon to discover that the ex is missing

and we're gonna learn later in the story

that Weisler has actually been killed

and dragged out of his office

and stuffed in the back of Jared's car

the ex is going he goes slips wow

second unit shot bang second

you know that that was her excellent

it's actually very uh she just leaned back

but it was a big sound that exit makes it work

now here we go

you might wanna talk about this little bit Michael

cause I know this is a difficult scene for you

cause we had all these people grooving away back there

who making no noise at all right

for the foot movements on the floor there

so yeah

well I'm giving Jared a little bit of a beating here uh

what happens is there's really no music we are so I was

we couldn't actually film it yeah

music and there's no people

nobody could talk or anything

so I was telling everybody to shut up

I know saying a word the reason we

the reason we do that is to

keep the dialogue tracks clear of any other

so noise looping yeah

that's easier for me that's right

we can cut between takes with that and it was you know

Jamie you helped out

I was late at night

we wanted to get the master shot the first night

then we had to wake up

and shoot the whole thing in the morning

and that's right you know

it was it was a tough scene but it was a lot of fun

I think it was the extras I got them going

you know

and I wanted them to have fun because if you really do

yeah it's important for the extras to have a good time

working a live audience during a commercial break yeah

it's like you guys gotta stay awake

or this is not gonna look real

yeah exactly

so they were they were all very they have fun

we had to move a few of them around

there were a few dopey looks

that I didn't want on camera

there's my good friend Jacob Sarno

Dino is making his appearance

you'll see him next to tower

back there with the glasses on

he came in from LA to to check out the movie

so we make sure we got him in there

is that Edgar back there no

Edgar is gonna be lonely on the stairs later with my

with Tim again my brother

as Michael runs down and pushes them out the way

but there's some cameos for you

this is fun better get a really nice looking sequence

and they come back to life yeah

and there's my daughter yeah

there he is there's Arnold there's my girl Tara

what are you drinking then

it was a Pepsi or something it was actually Bourbon

you know I can tell you that now

and so

this is our last scene before we both go and get it

that's right it's a nice touching scene

I think it was improvisations one take

we said one taking that yeah

and the next shot here

we actually had to digitally remove

Alicia from the shot

because it was the tail end of Tara sequence

saying goodbye so up there on this

you can sort of see a leaning forward

we digitally darkened her face really

but that's Alicia back there

cool Italian of a scene that you uh

you never seen the movie nice okay

here we go

there is a stuffed dog in the microwave there

for anyone who wants to notice

pause at least a real live dog yeah yeah

it was one of those dogs we yeah

get a pound one of those sick dogs we wanted to do

but it can be die anyway I love the flash

we totally didn't do that by the way

haha no

we actually killed your dogs insert there

and so the coals coming from Damon

the coals coming from Damon's room

we were supposed to think

Damon's still alive and active

and maybe there was some elaborate plot

that he used to pull off that hanging stunt whatever

this is fun so here we go

into the party

I like that this happens in the midst of a huge party

is like yeah

it's almost seems safe yeah

it's not like nothing can happen

that's right the further you get away from the party

the noise disappears this is a tough shot with the yeah

I remember really hard

took a lot of my first daddy camel prayed

had a crane fall to him that's Tim

my brother brother though wrong legend

that's Rebecca's voice believe it or not

on the phone there

that we digitally treated in the studio

so I wanted to be authentic

so I use Rebecca's voice but we messed it up

so far beyond her real voice that you can't tell anyway

so I need to bother but this is great

here we go so

we had to special shot coming up with

kind of a samaramie esque

sort of inanimate object point of view shot here

where we dolly through a microwave oven

which is we use a periscope lens for that

which mounts on the end of the camera

so it's like this long

phallic sort of lens attachment to the camera

and then we just head on a dolly and just push the

the lens through the microwave

we just rip the back out of the microwave

so we got this is set

we built here comes the killer

some extensive cutting in this sequence

this was very uncomfortable right

being uncomfortable yeah

god we only had like three hours to shoot this

I think we started at 2 in the morning

filming these handheld things

yeah and these overheads were done separately

with a hot head so at the end of the sequence

we have my homage to Heather's

by the way yeah

there we go yeah absolutely

yeah it's my homies

to Rinny Harlan's Elm Street 4 or something

a couple of these shots it was for yeah

dream dream masters

I love it this

shot here is actually from our first day of filming

this is the only

surviving material from that first day of filming

we did that scene mention a little to myself

that's the improv from Loretta that we kept

I remember shooting this scene

my girlfriend arrived this day

while we're shooting this very shot

hadn't seen her for months and months

and she turned up on set I turn around

she was there sweet little Simone

yeah she arrived on this day

here we go I love the character here reading

he's reading a Fangoria magazine back there

by the way yes

we love Fangoria you can't quite see it

but he wasn't a victim in the script

it was something I just came up with on the day

let's have him take the engineer out first

and it's kind of fun there

he's in the background behind the soundproof glass

he kills the guy it's great

so I don't know what the urban legend is

that he used for that guy

but he did something he's today

when we skip the urban legend

I always get the other legendary

this is great I remember doing this sequence too

you'll see actually

no you won't

you're not including the update gag real

but there's some great stuff with the

the killer was trying to break the glass at night

I relax

he's Wiley on these glass

he's not bringing it for like 20 times

he's hitting it with all these distortion

and someone get Matt the Pink Parker

and then Sasha moons him now she like

come on yeah

I'm waiting here when

here we go wack

that's great she's really good in this scene

this really shows she was great in this scene

innocent and I love this moment here

a second unit shot that Michael McDonald

great little moment there

she did her own stunts and yeah

all her own stunts hanging off the she

that's not blue screen or anything

she's really hanging off

those stairs on little wires and stuff

so great shot there

I'm not quite sure the movie that that's from

but I know I've seen that in another horror movie

but the running I think may carry or some

I don't know what it is she kind of looks kind of cool

Alicia

sometimes reminds me of Shelley Devol in The Shining

a little bit of that look about her

you know I might want to look for the movie

and just see what I'm talking about

she's just fabulous leashes an incredible actor

she's gonna do some really interesting things

I think this is a you know

definitely an interesting choice for her and Jared

to be in a horror movie like this so um

I think it was great fun for me to be the one to

to do with them so here we go

is big shots here about discovering the set

oh yeah this location

I forgot totally to mention that it was really funny

we had a

we had to shoot

a lot of this movie in existing locations

we didn't have the luxury of building

sets for all this stuff

and we never could have built sets that would

give us this kind of production value

so we were looking for a long time

all around Toronto for buildings and things

in this whole location

where we film the radio station sequences

I discovered while we're looking for car parks

we killed the dean I wandered off

I had to come find a bathroom actually

I wandered off from the group

and got into this elevator

and popped up into this building somewhere

which the car park was right underneath

we hadn't even seen this building and walk around go

I love this is incredible is so many angles

so we had our locations department come over

and that's how we found this location

I'm glad I had to go to the bathroom

this is shot the axe

remember that they almost take Terra move

oh yeah she

when she was running towards that exit sign in

the killer pops out at the end there

we had one take where yeah

we'd rehearsed it and rehearsed it and on the

on the take we uh

Tara decided to put her hands up in the air and

and last the second thank god

the stunman

anticipated enough to just act the axe upwards

and she would have lost a finger or two there

so that was a little scary

and this is all done processed

that it's Pullman's process for the car isn't moving

but we got lots of rain

and wind and things to create the illusion

that is a bit of that in this movie

but you know I tend to prefer it actually

more than the trailer rig stuff

we actually move the car

it's a hell of a lot easier to shoot to

so here we go back into her room

from when she came and she sort of cornered herself

don't ask me why

she goes up in the elevator when she goes down

geography the building was just not allowing it to

to occur the other way so here comes Alicia

she signals out but it's too late

the killers already in the room

I'll get him a cigarette

yeah right

there we go whatever on you

beautiful shot here I don't want to die

Max in the foreground

and a few people have told me

they really wanted to see what happened

I don't I don't know

I don't have the urge to to see that kind of stuff

said that you want my marker

yeah yeah

well we don't have any outtakes to send him

but the the most we see of this aftermath is

when Loretta comes back to the building

a little later we see a little bit of Tara's hand

and you know

it's a kind of way I was inclined to go with

the Gore in this movie is rather suggested

rather than actually throw it all up there

so I love this sequences done as one shot here

we actually ran the whole sequence with this one shot

and then we just punched in for reverse

once we got inside Jarrod's dorm room

so it was great to uh

really wanted to move quickly this night

and I was able to get the whole sequence done with uh

two setups all of a steady camera

I love this shot right here where his handshakes

yeah I really like the whole scene here

I think I think the performances are great

I think Jared conveys a good ambiguity to him

and Alicia's distrustful doubtful

it's just nice it really went well

I thought the Dean is gone

can't find Reese anywhere

very effective very herminesque

Q2 from Chris Young in this part of the movie

and usually they are

there is only one security guard for

35 hundred student campuses really

yeah research we before we check that out yeah

I actually when Reese was calling the police

I was tempted to have an ADR line

if you want to go really funny with it

because you're a character in a horror movie

the Dawson's Creek thing in the Noxima gag

work so well my probably got me got away with it

we're back to some more processed stuff here

in the car this is the same deal with stationary car

but lighting effects that way

let's head to our wardrobe person

cause that jacket is looks great on Rebecca

so yeah yeah

it's a great jacket very clear

I can curve I was one of a kind jacket

we couldn't damage it too much

cause we didn't have a spare

I got to keep my jacket from the movie yeah

you got to keep your wardrobe

I hope so yeah

I did just my jacket I don't want my tights

your wardrobe wasn't that great anyway

shut up this is cool

so this is fine anyway

the girls have a little moment

this is a little shorter than originally was shot

we just compressed a little bit of this stuff

the girls had a little bit more dialogue together

but I wanted to move move

on and just cut to the chase

which is the alarm goes off and we

we recognize it as being waxless

wristwatch

alarm that we heard earlier in the classroom

so you actually

I still regret wasn't the quicker ratchet

but I know I wanted when we did

it was pretty hard to find it version

like this digital beeping version of the good ratchet

that's cool being in the theater

and he would have got the synth out and done something

it's cool

hearing like when people in that alarm goes off

people go oh man

that's Wesley yeah professor man it's really good fun

it's cool it's like a lot of fun

and

a wonderful little series of looks here from the girls

and Jared and I love Rebecca's line yeah

Rebecca's lines wonderful timing

and worked really well with the focus shift here we go

Jared the guilty look love that like I said

he's all yours wonderful here we go into a big chase

that's great Jared's what the

personally what's going on

come back here so it was a lot of fun

was this a bitch the running sequence

not for Jared he just done prefrontane

so here we go now

we are conveniently

have the storm stop for this part of the movie because

haha is it happened storm stop and start

and and I had

and I had the stage of

really elaborate sequence of the janitor's truck

getting chased and he won't

have to deal with all the rain effects

so that's the honest is the moment to Texas chain

some Mexico homage anyone

absolutely uh yeah

just logistically

decided to make the creative decision to cut the rain

for this part of the movie

so we wet stuff down

but it wasn't it wasn't the mechanical rainfall

I love that little yeah little something

something happening there in the background

this is great so out of the frying pan into the fire

she thinker that Brenda yeah

she's a she went through a lot of trouble to pull this

pull this off

okay so here we go

he's the I love this moment here

who's who's in the car

who's in the car when she stop stop

someone's after me bang and we see him get in haha

yeah he looks all sweaty that's wonderful yeah

just just before getting we hold off from the reveal

okay so now we're into some trailer stuff

we really moving the car this time

so they're in a trailer towed behind a big tow truck

and we're all hanging around like idiots

of this trailer with 15 crew and sound guys

and boom mics and two cameras

yeah and if I have my way

it'll be the last time to know it's a necessary evil

it's really the only way to convincingly move the car

sometimes but why do people have this

this code huh

okay yeah

how many years it's a fashion style yeah

it is a fashion stage the next wave of clothing

I don't know the park I don't know why this is

we could just say pocket was so gross

but I love this moment between the two of them

some little improv that we came up with on the set

like door we're doing open from the inside

I think just Julian's great in this sequence yes

it's real Shelly Deval stuff happening there

love the music he's doing to me

Wendy give me the bat

here's Johnny and here is Johnny

he comes there it comes

Paul's car another Jeep actually

cause we need to stage another killer in the backseat

x gag later in the movie

so we opted for the Jeep again

love this

great so this is a lot of second unit stuff

just a little intercuts happening in here like Damon

see we had a lot of the really cutty sequences

we needed to get

a lot of second unit stuff after the fact

so Michael McDonald did an incredible job

integrating all that stuff into the

into the existing footage

so this was a shot over one night

this high this chase sequence so um

stunts was a separate occasion

but we had to kind of get all this done quickly

so this is I was pretty impressed with how much

stuff were able to get

the crew worked really quickly that night

the stunt didn't work out so great on the ship

of my editor did such a wonderful job

you never know about it here we go

very underwhelming on the day

but it's fine with a bit of cutting

I guess Alicia was wearing her seatbelt on this

oh yeah and she just doesn't

she's okay and she doesn't care about that janitor

it's like get me a Jan is an incidental character

he's a lot more inclined to die in an instant like that

so

I think it was a nose that probably hit the dashboard

I hope he doesn't watch okay

cut up the scene where she looks at him

she goes are you okay and he says no

I just get out of here yeah

we cut that house another optical

here we go Bang is digital cloud

we had it let's go

this is a fun sequence we originally and here it comes

I did a focus shift

similar to when Rebecca's looking at Jared

at the gas station before

I like his I said he's all yours

but we decided that was too close

and succession to our previous focus shift

so we did a straight cut there for that reveal

but always a big crowd pleasing moment

all right

here's a shot Michael McDonald did a second unit

actually

I'd love to take credit for this shot but I can't

this one right here yeah

but it's a really great shot really nicely worked in

she hears a scream off camera and we

we crane around to reveal Stanley hole in the

Alicia had to go up to again

no this was done while I was shooting your sex scene

actually same night that we were our second year

yeah we were doing this stage stuff

and we had to get these little pickups before we had

we had to pull a dressing off this location

so I would have done it

but it needed to be done that night

this is a big rain regularly

as you can see she wasn't in pre Fontaine

she really runs like a girl Jamie

I know I'm kidding

girls run like girls Alicia

I know it's a natural run

I know I was just joking

so here we go we got some

we had to build a little barrier around the set there

to keep the rats contained

but um the classic shafts of blue light

coming through the boarded up windows

yeah we wanted to

we wanted to give it that old school horror movie feel

whilst you know

a few 90s camera tricks and things

but I really like this location

this was a really nice building

that we totally dressed down

and disheveled and

you know

made made to look run down and it's really great

we walked out of there

with all these black stuff coming out of our noses

from all the smoke that we were using in this

at least dust and cobweb stuff everywhere

so you and I have asbestos poisoning yeah

you and everybody else

it's a bit

that really difficult shot for my steady cam guy

at late in the schedule

he'd been doing a lot of walking upstairs

and we injured his leg a crane fell on him during the

during the classroom sequence

I can totally relate to that

it happened to me at film school once

I had a crane falling here we go

shot right out of what's this movie

it should have been room 2 26 what's that movie

what movie that show that we just missed it

I had an evil dad that's not evil

that's who no it's a mystery

people can can speculate on them

just which she's come out to the door

it's kind of like a bucket of a certain movie

but here we go here's Michael's big death reveal

it was gonna be you're gonna be in some beer

but we couldn't use liquid

so we had to up for beer suds

it's a little cheesy for call

and these are all urban legends yeah

that's the body in the body in the barrel yeah

and this is the the body of the mattress

we can this whole sequence actually

kind of with my big homage to Halloween

which is my favorite horror movie

you know the sequence I'm talking about anyway

from Halloween there he is

he liked being up there

I wish we had outtakes that'd be great like some shit

so this is great this is a big finale

I think Rebecca's standout moment in the movie

I think she's just incredible in this sequence

and she just had so much fun

and was able to deliver a take after take variations

and and

we would do long stretches of this sequence in a row

and she was really able to

you know bring something different to every take

and I'd say I like this bit

this part of the performance

I like what you're doing with this bit here

but maybe try something and every time

it would be something really fresh and rich

she really did a she really caring with it

she's really the only actress at

you and I really got the hero

you and I were really set with Gino's freaking us

yet totally committed to winning

Rebecca to play this role does it too

doesn't it that was my

that was my yeah bitch

I saw her yeah

incredible like she has

yeah she's incredible

incredible

she cut it off by the way

no yeah

for that that play she's doing

no

here we go some mesmerizing lens

which some people in the movie didn't like the fact

that I wanted to use but it's in there anyway now

I think she looks cute right there and

I really enjoy this sequence

we had a lot of options here

I could have a lot of takes that I could have used

in place of the ones that I chose but

a nice problem to have excuse me

I'm sorry

but I can't understand a thing so poor Alicia

we had to do all of Rebecca's stuff first

and at the very end of like two days of shooting

a sequence with various set up

some whatever

we had to tie Alicia to the bed again and to hold her

oh her inserts and close up

so we just ran the whole sequence

and kept the camera on Alicia

and she had to go through all over again

so that was hard you fucking crazy

you certainly are baby she's a little nutty

she prefers the term eccentric Michael

but kind of reminds me bit of Carrie and stuff to

the lighting here is kind of like Carrie's mom is

it has got that five paper

you know yeah yeah

they're all gonna laugh at you for you Miss Thang

where's this thing come from

I have no idea I never heard of this thing

it's kind of like what is this word

girlfriend or something one of those things

now not only has Rebecca

been able to pull off all these urban legends

and like integrated herself with all these situations

so she could just be at the

in the woods

when Damon and Alicia are parking out to make out

so she could enact that legend

but she's also got power to rerun down building

for a slideshow

it's battery operated yeah

I go back to my original defense

that this whole movie is actually

someone's version of a story

that's been embellished but hopefully

you know

and that was Wexler slide machine

that's right that's right

evoking that whole thing yeah

you know when she stole

she killed her she took his props

projector down exactly

you guys are quick yeah man

we got a little sort of that

we all figure it out now still knows

we got this last minute thing

a little like a little yeah

thing about her marrying him and a little hard yeah

he couldn't afford to buy the ring

so we got you know

from Tiffany's away a little

and we have the projector always on her face

where you see teenager killed

or like I maybe did once or too many times

but it's fun anyway you know what

what's really disgusting is the mattress

I know it's really dirty

it really freaks me out

she's why you have sheets on the mattress I'm kidding

she wasn't sure how long it would take

pull to get back from the gas station

that makes sense very good

Brenda please I love this moment

let's go look at her eyes

it's so great yeah

she was actually starting to lose her voice there

when we did the insert with it

with the little the necklace and these things

you can hear she gets a little horse

I comment if we are probably post socket so you don't

can't tell anymore

but Poor Rebecca being

screaming would shut her out the window and everything

and you know what I want to do some inserts now

so it was fun favorite

you whack the kidney heist

this is actually my one of my favorite urban pictures

it had to be the final one he walked out

I hadn't quite anticipated how behind her character

the audience would be I always thought she'd be like

you had called it you and Gina will always believe that

I was totally blown away with what Loretta was doing

in the role it just had never seemed to me that

you know

that would carry that much weight with the audience

but I love it I'm so glad it did

you're sick does away with this student

then kills himself so she's got a little worked out

she's got her full guy lined up better

it's beautiful

it's so fucking my editor and I

Jay were rock would often say

whenever there be a confusion

when we're cutting the thing together is making sense

we would just you know

add the line which would fortunately had in the script

it makes perfect sense

and move it right up to the front of the scene

now listen I'm gonna explain it for you

it makes perfect sense and well it does

Brenda is just genius at this point

I kind of wish she would have like one yeah

she kind of does you know

like yeah that's true

that's true how did your story really unfold

like Alicia's up there but Brenda's back you know

like maybe Brent Brenda wanna kill Natalie

this is when Paul comes just now

that upset a lot of people

I think

it's always been upsetting to me

because the effect looks so bogus

what is this what's this

the the scalpel stuff I liked it

it's okay but it's a little hokey like that

you know first organization I'm just gonna grab

oh here we go

now I love this bit

oh great

rent a cop to the rescue this is great

get up against the wall psycho bitch

so the audience is kind of in on the joke yes

the filmmakers do believe that

this is a little bit excessive

and we yes we get that it's over the top is so yeah

it was supposed to be you're supposed to be laughing

yeah it's a great outtake of this with a with a knife

doesn't work

very funny

very convincing little insert there

Mike Michael did that

his second unit worked out real good

we have the fight whack that's a great gun

that's an electric gun that you can fire at close range

like right up close range to somebody's body

and it'll just give off a huge flash

but won't cause any damage at all

that was really useful for that gag

we needed to do there yeah

tell that to a few actors

not gonna mention yeah

well safety is obviously the first

I know concern as we will know

so here comes Jared and I think it's great here

it's a little bit of confusion initially

like is he is he on side with Rebecca

what's going on and I just think it's nice

it plays out really nicely here

I couldn't have planted better myself really

oh yeah

you couldn't have planned it better

cause we got just please be Mom's working that out haha

she's great here she's totally psychotic

got an incredibly intense look in her eyes there

you think so plays it really nicely

I think I remember when we were auditioning

we were we were unsure of how

how far we wanted to go with this performance

and then how big and over the top will count

we might we might wanna make it

but I think we really hit the right note yeah

you can give me would be great for your career yeah

we all she's great we

all waited a long time to find out who got what parts

should be so fucking up together

it's great it's fun

I remember records telling me she would took her

that you took you guys a long time to make it

the final decision and a lot of us

I think it took it you know

took a lot of time it's all together

it's all the way

it was like confusion about what we want to play

play it straight or play exactly

and that's right

I think it just had to be human straight

it would have it would come out

if it be ridiculous

we don't have to play more of the movie straight

we would have had to explain a lot more stuff away

because we were

we would be changing the rules of the movie

a little bit back

big cheer from the audience great

now originally I Judy

due to my

my like

a foresight into how well received

Loretta's character would be

I never bothered to really explain away

what happened to her after

right after they left

but we needed to do some looping to explain

there's also some contention

I remember about how far this character could fall

and realistically come back for another go

so we originally had a lot more stuff happening

she fell into the garbage

there's a pool there there's a dump

dumpster down there that's

that's what happens it's just really muddy

she fell in a car guys it's a Hollywood movie

they always fall in a car

that's that's a huge room unreaved yeah

that's awesome can't fear he comes back from the water

come on it was

it was always clear in my mind

that Larita did survive this

but we decided to add a little bit of ADR here

to make it perfectly clear

because she was a favorite

what why is that wound so huge

she got slashed and it's been bleeding

and she's been moving around and stuff

and there's another optical shot

haven't you ever been stabbed Sylvia

some matter with you

looks like a hand grenade went off of her

so here we go we come is returning to the scene

become a legend to you know

change a little getting into the theme of the movie

with reiterating these legends again

and kind of setting up a little bit

preparing the audience for our real ending

but this is always fun here we are another

another romance process gig with a car stationary

we had to do a lot of looping here

because of the

right amount of rain from the wind machines

and the here we go

and now

that wasn't there an originally a line something here

at the very end when she went through the windscreen

we were gonna have Brenda Brenda in the back seat yeah

coming to after that these girls had fought it out

and Natalie climbs back in the front

seat and puts her seatbelt on and says

to hit a legend about

the girl didn't wear her seatbelt

and the and Brenda's is confused yeah

Brenda's neither did

I

yeah we kind of had to

it was becoming apparently very

really obvious that that wasn't gonna work

Bang big stunt out the window

was that really Rebecca no

she's awesome that was a stunt Coco Shelly

who roll buses and all sorts of cool stuff

for stuff in Toronto so she's she's great

you real trooper kind of she's been through hell huh

really what a day Jesus she'll get over that night

how's your head yeah

now they have to walk back too there goes Brenda

and it's over oh god as we headed

the sirens there to signify help is on the way

Reese will be okay and everything's gonna be fine

here we go

here we go and where'd you cast these guys were from

this is Danny Compton this Danny Compton from LA

so Danny's a good actor

and the rest of them from Toronto

um there were just people we met for you know

casting in Toronto for incidental roles up there

and we just you know

it's interesting

my only problem with this scene is that girl's knees

they're pretty drastic aren't they

we're trying to kill

we're trying to imagine what future fashion might be

like you know hello

it's whenever years ago yeah

well you know

stuff comes back so Skirt

Girl on the right was from the Scooby Doo mystery yeah

just Thelma

the girl with the Noxima line was

she was originally gonna be in the sequence with

with the council that we never ended up shooting

so I bumped her into the sequence

because she's at a kind of a fun look

who's this who could it be

and it's and it's Rebecca

is that Brad Pitt from True Romance on the right

I think yeah it's an umbil cameo

and there's a movie and that is Rich

The Incredibles

it was a great movie to make a lot of fun

I mean I

I can't can you not yeah

I couldn't cannot believe it

my luck that I looked into this experience with

no it was a really great experience

we had a lot of people at

Michael McDonald and Neil Moritz

who were experienced producers

they've done movies like The Usual Suspects

Michael was born Nick was born at Phoenix

was really

instrumental in getting this film through the studio

and and Mike Metavoy

who was very brave uh

to give some somebody like me a shot

you know especially

considering the amount of

new talent involved with the production

you know to give a first time director a girl

give me a second exactly

yes Mike Nails

I was sprinting perfume and Nordstrom yeah

Westside Pavilion when a really

really great experience it was

it's right I went straight from the pitch to

to my perfumes pretty good

but that's all changed now before puberty um

just immediately after right

very good but there will be a sequel

I'm not to say it's too early to know

but if it makes money then

there's no reason that they wouldn't wanna

entertain an idea but you're seeing oh

I just really wanna go on the record for saying

it's a great experience for me

was one of the best things to have done

an incredible supportive crew

production design department and like my deep

it just everybody really

really committed to this movie in a big way

and I think really made a big difference

as a relatively small budget for um

for a movie like this and we um

able to stretch a little bit further

by shooting in Toronto and everything like that

we're able to get a lot more bang for the buck

but you know turned it with a great looking movie very

um you know

happy considering the time constraints to that

with the film was made under

I think turned out really well

really well well

I wanna thank the Lord yeah

so really really fun experience for me

as a director and everything

so it was great it was great

love working with you man

hopefully this will this will

you know a trend that will continue in Hollywood

will

hopefully see some more horror movies getting made

and good ones they won't bring themselves out

because there's no reason that they should happen
