how to play like that?

- Well you couldn't dance a lick.

- I think I just got busy, work,

raising kids, more work.

over a dollar a gallon.

for a gallon of gas on the way over here.

Them oil companies robbing us blind.

- Just need to buy smaller
cars for better gas.

- Well, you can't beat an American car.

They'll find out soon enough

that those Japanese ones
won't hold up so well.

- Well I hear they like him up there

in that front office.

He keeps it up, he'll
be my boss before long.

- Ah, you better hope that never happens.

This is one Pap used
to really like to play.

- What brings you up the
creek, Charlie Abner?

- Wanna play some tunes?

rest of these beans first?

- I'd still be up in Ohio

if Mama didn't get that job.

Mama and Daddy and both my big brothers

work for the Champion
Paper Company in Hamilton.

It all worked out fine,

till school let out for the summer.

They didn't want me being home by myself

so they let me come down here

until school starts back up.

- We're gonna stay with my
Uncle Raymond in Norwood.

- I don't know where that is.

- That's a long ways from Hamilton.

- I don't wanna go to Ohio.

I like it here.

- It's all right.

It's all flat land and there's people

and buildings and cars everywhere.

- I don't wanna go to no school.

- School's fun, there's lots of kids.

Some of them make fun of the way we talk

and how we dress.

Old Steve Hendrix don't
make fun of me no more.

He used to call me Hamiltucky

on account that I was from Kentucky

and we lived in Hamilton.

Hamiltucky's in the feedsack, he'd say.

I'd tell him to stop but
he'd just keep doing it

and all the kids would laugh.

- You got him to stop?

- Well one day after school I decided

I was gonna whip the tar out of him.

I told him never to
call me Hamiltucky again

and punched him square in the nose,

made it bleed.

But then he shoved me down.

I got back up but he
shoved me down harder.

I wasn't stopping but I hurt my elbow

when I hit the ground.

I just yelled at him and I said

if he ever called me Hamiltucky again

I'd bloody his nose all over again.

He stays away from me now.

- [Charlie] Is it hard to
learn to read them books?

- Yeah, at first it is.

But I'm real good at it now.

Granny don't have any books at home

but she has me read
her the Bible at night.

I can even read them big Bible words like

Levisticus and Deuteronomus.

- How many kids are at that school?

- I don't know.

A hundred?

There's lots of girls there.

Lots of pretty ones too.

Up in Ohio, if a boy and
a girl likes each other

they hold hands.

I ain't never done it though.

- Why would they do that?

- I don't know.

Just says they likes each other, I guess.

- [Charlie] Hmm.

All that playing with Ruthie

- Maybe so.

We can't talk about it.

Mama don't want me to know

when she cries after I go to bed.

- There ain't nothin' sadder in this life

than losin' a child.

When little Sarah came so soon,

I liked to lost both of 'em.

They was both sick for so long.

There's nothin' else I could do

but the Lord gave us a precious gift.

He let us love her for three years.

- I just want her to still be here.

at the Old Regular Baptist Church.

- When Pap was growing up,

they would not let him
keep a fiddle in the house.

They made them old boys

hang 'em out in the barn at night.

Reckon they were afraid that
the devil would come out.

Some folks say they put it in there

to keep the spiders and the dust out.

But the real reason is

the devil won't get into the fiddle.

That's what Pap said anyway.

He told me, you don't have
that snake's tail in there,

to moonshine, dance halls and whorehouses
