weirder and weirder.

Under investigation
by Ivan Sanderson and the FBI

the body vanished.

For my money the body
is still buried on the farm.

For the next
eight decades...

I have heard
strange creatures screeching.

...encounters
with a similar beast.

I couldn't move.
I was like I was made of stone.

With powerful hands,

and razor sharp fangs.

in the Minnesota wilderness.

They ate these ribs.

Could the same
undocumented species...

Where's the third one?

else hear that?

In the mid-20th century,

scientist Ivan Sanderson

set out to separate
fact from fiction.

He investigated hundreds
of frightening encounters

with unexplained creatures
around the world.

Our next guest tonight
is one of the world's leading naturalists,

accumulating material
for some 40 years.

As the founder
of Cryptozoology,

he built the most
extensive archive

of unclassified creatures
on earth.

There seem to be
a lot of these creatures.

In our continent,
in South America and Africa.

And all over Asia.

But following
his death in the 1970s,

that archive disappeared.

Until now.

Armed with modern tech

and Sanderson's
lost research.

We need
to take this and compare it to what's in the archives.

A team of experts
will reinvestigate

his unexplained cases.

Using up
to the minute research,

and predator expertise.

I've never seen
wildlife do this.

There's nothing
like that that should be doing that here.

The Minnesota
Wildman

might be one of my
absolute favorites

because of all
the twists and turns

and physical artifacts.

So let's just go over
a few of the details.

The wild man
is a primate species

with dark fur, large toes

and a distinctive
ape like face.

Sightings of this creature

date back centuries
to Eastern Asia,

where the Chinese government
has documented this creature

collecting eyewitness
accounts.

Hair samples,
and footprints.

It's believed to be
a descendant of Neanderthal,

but some speculate it could,
in fact be the missing link

between man and ape.

So we have
an uptick in sightings

in a location that was
one of Ivan Sanderson's largest cases

he ever got to personally
investigate in Minnesota.

Where Frank Hansen killed
this alleged hominid.

I visited a man
named Frank Hansen

to investigate a frozen
Wildman corpse.

Hansen claims to have been
walking through the woods

whilst hunting
for white tailed deer.

Suddenly he heard
a strange gurgling noise through the trees.

He continued his hunt

and in the middle
of a small clearing,

came upon three
hirsute beasts

tearing at the insides
of a freshly killed deer.

In an instant,
Hansen realized

they were some
type of ape like man.

When one of the creatures
charged at him, he pulled the trigger.

He then collected
the carcass.

He then
encased it in ice.

Showing anyone
that wanted to see it.

It was essentially
a roadside attraction.

That is when
Ivan got involved.

He came and saw it
for three whole days

at Hansen's
private property.

He mentioned that it had
an extremely large toe.

That it has almost
like an auburn colored hair,

a reddish orange
in tint.

And then you starts
taking pictures of it.

You see it sitting?

- Mmm-hmm.
- That was a lot when the ice started to melt.

He specifically said
that he could smell the rotting flesh,

which is not something
that you would get from, like a dummy.

Ivan Sanderson
actually believed that the Wildman

was a possible hominid
primate within our lineage.

In 1968

one month after
visiting the specimen,

Ivan Sanderson
went on Johnny Carson,

and proclaimed
the missing link as found.

He then notifies the FBI

asking them
to retrieve the body

from the Hansen Farm

for further
scientific research.

In February 1969,

the FBI descends
on the Hansen farm to retrieve the corpse,

but are turned away.

When they arrive again
with a warrant

two months later,
the body is missing.

Replaced with
a plastic replica.

So we actually have
correspondence in here

between Frank Hansen
and his lawyer,

and the lawyer advised him
to get rid of the body.

Wait,
that's in there? - Yeah.

Wait. That's never
that's never been seen before.

- I know. Yeah.
- Can I see that?

Having this
information explains

the timeline
of the missing body, right?

And Ivan theorized
that it was possible that Frank Hansen

disposed of that body
somewhere on his farm.

Not only that,

we also have a recording
of a witness who claims

he saw digging machinery
at Hansen's farm

shortly before
the body disappeared.

There's no way back
then they had the technology

to comb that large
for property for something so small.

But we do.

If there is a burial site
on that property, we will find it.

Even after 50 plus years,

there's a chance
the remains will contain enough DNA

to solve one
of the most bizarre

mysteries Sanderson
ever encountered.

But the story
gets even bigger.

We have the site
of where he supposedly saw the Wildman.

And so this would have been
the place where he shot him.

- Yeah.
- Okay.

Look, there's been
an uptick

in recent sightings
in that surrounding area.

That lines up
pretty well.

Remember,
it was like three of them,

surrounding a group
of dead deer on the ground from hunting them?

So with this
particular case,

there could be
multiples out there still breathing.

It's possible
that if we go out there,

we might be able
to get new clues

or a new piece
of the evidence

that nobody ever
you've got before.

I think we have
to go to Minnesota.

This Wildman case
is complicated.

So we're splitting
the team up based on our strengths

Tracy and I are gonna go
try to track down

what may have happened
to the Wildman body.

Because if Sanderson's
theory was correct, Hansen buried

an actual missing link
on his farm.

Justin, Troy and Brittany,

they're going to use
Sanderson's map

to locate where Frank Hansen
first spotted the Wildman.

Is this the creature
who bridges the gap between man and ape?

If so,
he's the greatest

anthropological find
in history.

The face is his
most startling feature,

both to anthropologists
and anyone else.

A gruesome appearance,

which is enhanced
by a considerable amount of blood.

This forest literally
has about 4000,000 acers?

and parts of it
have not really been touched or evaluated.

The account location
that Frank Hansen did have

his account is in one
of those pocketed areas

that most people just
commonly don't go to.

Superior National Forest

is located
in northeastern Minnesota.

The expansive area includes
over 2000 lakes and rivers,

but Brittany,
Justin and Troy,

will head to the Whiteface
Reservoir area

of the forest,
where there's one million acres

of remote territory,
that is virtually unexplored.

Ivan Sanderson believed
that this could possibly be

a type of missing link
to the hominid genus.

However, there was also
still speculation on the table

that it might also be
a type of ape.

Now there are primates
that live in cold environments.

But not in North America.

Japanese macaque

Uh, their body structure
is going to be different.

They're built
for that cold weather.

But could it could be
a type of relic

that people thought
went extinct,

like we think
everything goes extinct

and then they're like,
"Oh we found it."

This thing shouldn't
be here anymore.

Yeah, I just can't see
a primate living

in this type
of environment.

So I want to look
at every angle before I believe that there's

a mysterious Neanderthal
from the dinosaur age.

That's just my opinion.

Arriving
at Whiteface Reservoir,

the team meets
with a local hunter

who had a bizarre encounter
with this creature.

I've seen
just about anything.

Not much surprises me.

Except for the unknown.

My experience
happened several years ago.

I had done a hunting trip
with some guys.

They had left,
and I was making myself some dinner.

And the next thing you know,
I smelled a terrible smell.

Like nothing I've ever
smelled out here before.

I look up and I saw

the biggest,

nastiest thing I've ever
seen in my life.

Its eyes were
absolutely human.

A couple of things
went through my head.

Number one is
I'm going to die.

I couldn't move.
It was like I was made of stone.

Are we somewhere
in the vicinity?

If you go right down
that way,

about two miles.

- So we're really close.

literally within
this area

and very close
in proximity

to the original
Frank Hansen kill site.

With the eyewitness
accounts and Sanderson's map.

This is a perfect spot
to start our investigation.

The Hansen
kill site

is reportedly
in a cedar swamp

two miles inland
from the campground.

An area that's
also in the middle

of recently
reported sightings.

Guys,
if we keep moving and we see a creek

and it starts to move in,

if we follow that,

it should take us up
towards the Cedar Swamp.

Based off the map.

250 miles away,
Charlie former intelligence Officer Tracy Walder

arrive at the location
of Frank Hansen's farm.

That last location
where the body was seen.

And some believe
it to be buried.

in the area forever.

This farm here my brother
bought it in ' 94.

And I bought it
from him in 2017.

Before that,
Frank Hansen owned it.

Right here in this corner
is where I saw the Wildman of Frank Hansen for the first.

I've grown up next door
for my entire life.

And we rented the farm.
We had cattle here.

What do you know
about Frank Hansen?

What kind of guy was he?
What was he like?

He was he kept
back to himself

a little extravagant
with what he did.

And, but he was
a great neighbor.

If we think
we found something,

would it be okay to maybe
dig around a little bit?

Sure, that's fine.

Hansen
when he owned the property

it was a fully
functional farm,

just like we're
seeing today.

Look at that. So, based
on the photographs

of Hansen's original exhibit,
that's the original sign.

Oh, wow!

The current owner
of this farm has been very generous.

Giving us free access
to look for a body

that may or may not
be here.

And I have special training
that can help us find it.

As a former
FBI agent,

Tracy trained at the agency's
infamous Body Farm.

It's a research facility,
but it's also used by law enforcement.

And you can basically
see bodies

in various states
of decomposition.

In various atmospheres.

One of the fastest
decomposition rates

is when bodies
are submerged in water.

This is a farm
in Minnesota,

but on this farm
there's lots of different microclimates.

There's kind
of rolling hills.

There's ponds.

There's tall grass.

And those
help me evaluate

where I'd like
to look for this body.

There are
so many ways

to get rid
of a body here.

This is the area where
he would burn things and bury things.

It wouldn't be
a bad place to dispose

of the original
wild man's body.

I think one of the best
things to do

and they use them
today all the time

in order to find people,
is these drones.

I think you could cover
a lot more ground a lot more efficiently.

So let me call some colleagues
and see what I can do.

Yeah,

I don't see
any cedar swamps yet.

I mean, we're swampy,
but it's not-- - It's gotta be well--

It was 50 years ago.
Things changed.

We have to be realistic
about the terrain.

Back in
Whiteface Reservoir,

Brittany, Troy and Justin
trekked through the dense

Cedar swamp noted
in Hansen's account.

In search of the kill site
marked on Sanderson's map.

And it's real
thick back there.

The area that we're in,
we're gonna find

vastly different predators.

So I'm gonna be looking
for any sign of any wildlife

and try and narrow
that down

to kind of get to a suspect,
so to speak.

And that could be
anything from

what kind
of food is available,

what the climate is like.

And then on top of that,

we'll look for scat,
fur, tracks, dens.

We have to take
all of this information,

and then you have
to dial that down

and try and get
as close to possible

as what you want to find
that needle in the haystack.

sometimes watch people on trails?

It's almost like
a a bass sound,

Infrasound is a feeling
sometimes,

like if you
are face to face

with a big lion
or a predator,

you'll feel like
this power,

like you're sitting
with a God like creature.

That's the best way
I can explain it to you.

You kind of feel it
in your chest.

Did anybody
else and crew

feel that or sense that?

Infrasound is a low
frequency sound that some animals can emit

that is below the range
of human hearing.

Most animals use
infrasound to communicate.

But others use it
to scare off things

when they
feel threatened.

It's weird, right?

Am I about to have
a heart attack?

That was like,
what-- It's--

I feel why is my
body doing that?

You know, like
it was unexplained.

When it comes
to Wild men species across the globe.

There have been
theorized cases that maybe they do know

how to harness
the ability of infrasound.

I have to wonder
if the Wild men in Minnesota

might also have
the same type

of evolutionary advancement.

And might be able to utilize
that sound as well.

Did anybody pick up
the microphones?

What you'll
probably hear when you review it truthfully

is you're going to hear
a bunch of clicking.

All three of us
felt infrasound at some point,

working with animals.

Immediately we need
to know what this is coming from.

We're just gonna
have to be careful.

Whatever we were
coming up on, didn't want us there.

And it was either
letting a signal out

or it was warning
others in the area

that somebody
was in its territory.

I'm gonna set this snag up,

and I'd like to see
if I can catch anything that might come through.

This is a hair snare.

I'm not making it
to where it's gonna be a fence

where we're gonna hook
an animal or hurt an animal.

I'm just here to get
a hair sample.

Let's just keep

So our going
theory is that in 1969,

Frank Hansen took
the original Wildman

and buried it somewhere
on this farm.

Tracy and I
just took the time

to explore the farm on foot,
and it is massive.

There are way
too many places

to hide a body
disposable body.

We're bringing in drone techs
to cover more area

in a shorter amount
of time than we could ever hope to do alone.

Ready to get some
drones up?

So today
we brought a drone.

That allows us to look
for organic gasses,

and we also brought
a ground penetrating radar unit

which allows us
to look for any sort of underground disturbances.

We'll move the drone
on to the pad,

I'll slide the case
back a little bit

to just so it's
out of the way.

Normally, we would
bring out cadaver dogs

to smell for cadaverine,
but in my opinion, drones are probably

the most effective
and efficient tool

in an investigation
like this.

Cadaverine
is a chemical compound

produced by
decomposing bodies.

It leaves traces
for hundreds of years,

and every species
has unique scent markers.

Cadaver dogs
are trained

to identify the smell
of the cadaverine

But it can only detect
the specific species they were trained for.

But where they are limited,

modern technology
often isn't.

All right.
Send the motors.

The detection drone
is an incredible tool for us.

It can pick up
decomposing bodies.

It can pick up emissions.

And it will signal if it finds
cadaverine coming from a body.

What we're mostly
looking for here we'll see.

A small spikes
in gas readings

along the flight route here,

But once we see those
and we kind of covered the area a little closer.

So the places that we're
most interested in

are the places
just past there.

There's a clearing up
over the hill.

So it looks like it's over
the pond now, right?

It is a windy day,

so even if w
e do get a spike,

it could be hundreds
of feet away

from where it actually is.

Nothing.

- Really nothing.
- Nope.

With the wind I don't think
this is the way to go.

No, I don't think so either.

I think the conditions
just aren't right for it.

The downside?
No technology is perfect.

Gonna be difficult to
determine what's coming from the ground,

especially because it's
windy here,

and the cadaverine
can be dissipated

by environmental factors.

Or covered by
all the gas being produced

by the animals in the farm.

We need a plan B.

As the sun begins
to set at Whiteface Reservoir,

Brittany, Troy, and Justin

draw closer to Hansen's
reported kill site.

We're sitting in the clearing
where Frank Hansen

actually saw the wild men
and had his kill.

And when he came
into the clearing,

that's where he saw
those wild men eating.

For me to believe
in the wild man, I'd have to see him

with my own eyes,

with evidence

to bring back
to show everybody else.

I don't think they're

and kill the way like this is?

No. There's plenty
of animals that'll do it.

You got grizzly bears.

Those can stash and kill,
but not here. Nope. Nope.

The gut

I don't know necessarily
what would cause that.

I mean, to be fair
to your research,

they did say that
they go into campsites.

- And steal tools.

I have no idea
what kind of natural predator

would do this to a deer.

But I still haven't seen
any evidence

of a wild man running around.

So we're gonna move forward
and see what we can come up with.

on the dead deer to see

if whatever killed them
is coming back.

The next morning,
back at the Hansen Farm,

Charlie and Tracy
have a solution

for the failed
cadaverine test.

The cadaverine detector hits were inconclusive.

I don't believe that anything
that was put in the ground

60-plus years ago
is still gonna give us those emissions.

We are
flying in Matrice 300.

We've got a ground-penetrating
radar unit.

- Awesome.
- I like that.

That's exciting.

That's why we decided
to switch to

ground-penetrating radar,
or GPR.

It will give us data points
that are more conclusive

and aren't subject to
environmental factors like wind.

And we'll see
if anything comes up buried.

This is probably my
favorite piece of technology

that we've worked with so far.

Taking off.

GPR,
or ground-penetrating radar,

is often used by
law enforcement agencies

to locate hidden burial sites.

By sending radar signals
into the soil,

it measures
the strength and distance

of the signals
bounced back to the device

to detect any unusual objects
beneath the surface.

What's the depth on it?

Like, how deep
into the ground can it go?

So, it's gonna depend
on a few different things,

such as the frequency
that you're using, uh,

the soil conditions,
and things like that.

Um, but typically,
we're getting ranges of six, eight, ten feet.

So,
if the conditions are right,

this instrument could
pick up a body

so long as it's
above ten feet? - Yeah.

What about a skeleton? - Yeah.

Okay.

I find it
really interesting that

soil quality also impacts GPR.

Water? Bad. Loam?

Bad for decompression.

Good for GPR.

It's so simple and strange,
like, how there's this

intersection of soil quality
in this case.

Looking around the area,
I do have concerns that

it's a wet area.

That's not great.

That will increase
decomposition rates.

I don't have super high hopes

that we're gonna
find something intact.

Ah.

So, it looks like

we just got a small hit
right about here.

If you could just double back
over that area, Jared.

Let's see
if we get the same hit.

So, that's
a strong signal right there.

There's actually

some sort of anomaly
down underneath the ground.

how it's different from the rest of the data here.

We can't tell you
what it is right now.

The only way to know
is for you to go ahead and actually dig it up.

But there is something there.

of the dead deer
to collect their trail cams.

So, to me it looks like
they were pulled this way.

Whatever did this was in a feeding frenzy.

These deer are torn apart.

Now, it's not exactly the same
as Frank Hansen's account

of coming across the wild men
feasting on the deer,

but it's certainly close.

I'm going to

get some other DNA off of these as well.

pieces of bone to use.

exactly what did this.

I have a pretty good idea,

Supposing you ran
into a creature that was

not just a cross between

a man and an ape,

but a perfectly normal progeny

of a race of beings

that was neither quite man
nor quite animal,

what, apart from taking off
for the nearest hills,

would you do?

If menaced,
would you shoot it?

And if you did,

would you feel you had
committed a murder

or had just been out hunting?

What I mean is,

where do you draw the line

and on what criteria?

reasonably deep here, right?

The ground-penetrating radar

had a hit here.

It's a data point.
We don't know exactly what's down here,

but there was
a disturbance in the soil.

So we need
to attempt to identify what that disturbance was.

It could just be a rock,

but it's something.

with a natural resource science major?

You can dig holes.

I think I found something.

about the possibility.

This could be exactly what
we came here for.

This bone could be related
to the wild man.

We'll need to get
this bone tested for DNA

or place its age.

Anything that can
help identify

what this actually is.

We still need to be realistic.

This could be nothing.

There's cows everywhere.
We heard coyotes.

My imagination
is running wild,

and I really want
to know what this is.

Okay, so I went ahead

and went back
and grabbed the cards

from the trail cameras
we set up.

- And we did get some cool shots.

Oh, what'd we get?

Dude, that's a big old black bear right there.

Dude, look at
the thickness of that.

Look at that muscle.

We did get other footage.

Look, wolves. See?

Damn. Look at him
tear off at that thing.

I think that deer
is 140 pounds.

And I can't believe
the density of the size

of that wolf compared
to that deer carcass.

That's a big wolf.

So clearly we see
what the culprit is here. It's wolves.

Wolves and bears, which is
exactly what Justin and I were talking about.

So in my belief here,

I think that what people
are seeing, they're making up.

Minnesota has
a large amount of predators.

Bears, wolves, bobcats, etc.

And all the things people
are talking about that they're seeing,

they want to believe
in this folklore.

They want to believe
there's a monster.

But what they're
probably seeing is

a large predator
that either has mange

or hair differences,
has blood on its face.

It can be confusing.
You're scared.

Now you're seeing
with fearful eyes and not logical eyes.

But how would you explain then

Frank Hansen's original report

where he stumbled upon
these creatures that were

eating off a deer?

- Okay.
- And then they got up and ran off.

When Ivan Sanderson
got involved,

he started trying
to put those pieces together to figure it out.

We need to do
further investigation. - Exactly.

Being in these woods,

you almost can feel
as though that creature

is around us.

There's just too much evidence
to dismiss wild man

based on
one trail camera video.

Our witness account
happened at night.

So it's possible that
what we're looking for is nocturnal.

And by morning,
all the evidence

could be disturbed
by other animal activity.

And that's what I'm saying,
is I agree with you guys.

I can see where
the misidentification would come into play.

that I do firmly believe

that there was
something there.

And I just want to know
what that something is.

If we want to find something,
the best way to do it

when the animal is active.

Uh, some of the largest, uh,

predatory creatures
are nocturnal hunters.

With this in mind,

perhaps cryptids are
undiscovered for a reason.

They prey
under the dark of night.

Yeah, therefore,
the best time to see one

is the most difficult time
to see one.

The toe was large.

This footprint is massive,

and it has a large toe.

Before leaving the site,

the team pours a mold
into the mysterious footprint

and marks it for retrieval.

The evidence
just keeps piling up.

But we've got some
major key factors here.

We've got the deer kill site

where they were
stacked on themselves.

We've got a foot track.
We even have my hair snags.

Based off the evidence
that we collected,

I'm starting to feel like

something like the wild man
may exist out here.

I just got
the DNA analysis back.

Oh, awesome.

Full forensic report
on our bone.

So it turns out
we had a fragment,

not a full bone.

Now remember, bones generally
aren't good for DNA.

- So DNA came back inconclusive.

- I was kind of expecting that.

- And what we found out

is that that fragment

has been in the ground

for decades.

- In a way that lines up...

...when Sanderson believed

that the body of the wild man

may have been buried.

But for right now, we have
something from the farm

where we believe
the wild man corpse

may have been disposed of.

On the hair snag
I also had set,

there were hairs
on there as well.

The hairs we collected
on the snag,

they looked red, but it also
could have been blood.

We just don't know yet.

Now, where it begins
to get interesting,

we found a footprint.

Look, so I have the original,

and then I also went ahead

and made a surface cast
of it as well.

And the reason why I did this

was because all
the dirt and inlay

from, like,
the pieces of the ground

doesn't allow me to see
the massive amount of detail.

The moment you made
a surface cast, I could

actually see the detail
of ridges in the foot and everything.

Now, what do you see

in this print

that has been continuously

drilled into our head
with this case

with Ivan Sanderson?

That absolutely

- bulbous digit of a big toe.
- Exactly.

How incredible is this?

- It's huge.
- Yeah.

We were able
to examine this in the field.

And basically determine that

whatever movement
this was doing,

it was chasing
and putting all of its weight

more on the frontal part
and not so much on the back.

- This is incredible.
- I know.

I mean,
compared to primitive prints,

this has characteristics
to the Denisovans.

Denisovans are
primitive human species

discovered in 2010
that existed

during the same period
as Neanderthals.

The Denisovans

were actually found
in Siberia.

Closest to where we would have
made the land bridge over.

There's been no discovery

of the Denisovans yet
in America.

But they haven't even
determined when they went extinct.

So this all aligns

with the branching
evolution theory.

I think we're
looking at a relic primate

with really strange feet.

And could
very well still exist

in an isolated pocket.

In higher altitude areas

just like the Himalayas.

Or possibly
the mountains of Minnesota.

The total sum of the evidence

paints a picture that there is

wild man activity
in the region.

Based on our research,

we think there's a chance
the Minnesota wild man

could be a novel,
previously undiscovered,

brand new species.

But we don't have enough
conclusive evidence yet.

We may never know
the true fate of Hansen's wild man body.

But there are
so many facets of this mystery we've yet to explore.

And the possibility
of the existence

of an undiscovered species
in Minnesota

is more compelling than ever.

Uh, science is defined
in the dictionaries

as the pursuit of the unknown.

Yet there is
a very great deal more

to be learned

about everything
than is at present known.

And this applies to our Earth

as much as to anything else.
