I said,
"Have you just had someone in

to report a Jane Harrison missing?"

And they said, "Yes."

I said, "Well, that's my sister.

Something sinister
has happened to my sister."

She'd disappeared, seemingly
from the face of the Earth.

What could possibly have happened
to a young mother,

in broad daylight,
in the middle of London?

Ryan went to bed that night,

thinking he's gonna get up
in the morning,

they're all gonna be going
off to Florida,

and he woke up into a nightmare
that he's still in to this day.

But when a killer refuses
to reveal the location of a body,

police, prosecutors
and forensic teams

have an almost impossible task
to deliver justice.

And that just killed us even more,

to think we are doing
a life sentence...

..and he's free to do what he wants.

- Jane's sisters, and her two sons,
are still searching for answers.

What happened to Jane?

How could she have disappeared
without a trace?

This is their story.

Jane Harrison from North London

hasn't been seen for a month,

and detectives believe
she's been abducted and killed.

- 32-year-old Jane Harrison
is excited to be going on holiday

with her kids and partner, Kevin.

The couple enjoy
a last-minute shopping trip...

..but just 24 hours later,
Jane is missing.

- Jane went to Wood Green

to get some last-minute bits
for her holiday.

She rang me up, but
unfortunately, I missed the call.

But my son took it.

She went, "Tell Mummy, I'm down Wood
Green, I'm buying some bikinis,"

cos she was going to America,
I think, on the Saturday.

And when my son told me,
I said, "Lucky cow."

And I knew she'd be on the phone
later on that night,

but obviously,
she wasn't on that phone.

- The last positive sighting
was at 5:20,

and that was Thursday
the 15th of June.

- From Wood Green,
from that car park,

Jane was never seen again.

I knew immediately,

when I got that phone call
at 11:00 or 11:30 at night.

My partner that I was with
came and got me out of bed.

He said, "Kevin's on the phone."

I just knew in my heart
something was wrong.

So, I answered the phone to him.

He said, "Oh, Maxine, Jane still
ain't come home. Is she with you?"

- We knew immediately,
that that was...that was...

that weren't right.

There's something
seriously gone wrong.

Kevin claimed he'd last
spoken to Jane the previous evening,

when he dropped her off
near her mother's flat

to head out for drinks with friends.

- He went home to her flat,
and her son was there - Ryan.

The house phone rang.

Jane twice phoned her boyfriend

to say that she was in a pub
with friends and would be home soon.

She rang Kevin and said,

"I'm out with some friends,
having a drink."

Kevin said he was
gonna go out and look for her,

look at these different places
and all that.

We all descended on Jane's place.

My cousin, she was gonna
watch the little ones

while we went off in different
directions, trying to find her.

But Maxine and Claire
have always had doubts

that Jane was out drinking
that evening.

- Wouldn't be going
out on a Thursday evening. Where?

If she did,
she'd be with myself or Maxine.

- And I know for a fact,

if my sister
was going out that night,

from when she left Wood Green,
I would have been the first person

she would have contacted -
and I never got that call.

Having failed to find Jane,

the family are at a loss
as to where she could be.

- I said, "If my sister
doesn't turn up by the morning,

I'm going to the police.

She's got till 5:00 o'clock
to come home.

Come 5:00 o'clock,"
I said, "I'm going to the police."

But just before 5:00 o'clock,
Kevin rang me and said,

"I'm at the police station.

I've just reported Jane missing."

- Without a shadow of doubt,
the initial priority was,

"Where is Jane?" and finding Jane.

One of the things
we want to know is:

"Who was the last person
to actually see Jane?

Who was the last person we can
physically say was with Jane?"

Because we want to speak to them.

We want to understand,
when they left Jane, how was Jane?

By talking to her family,
her friends,

to Kevin, to her oldest son,

we can understand how Jane lived
her live, what her life was about,

and it gives us an indication
of why Jane may have disappeared.

It was just
an ordinary day for Jane.

There wasn't anything unusual

about her activities that day.

There wasn't anything...

She wasn't in any distress.

She had a plan for the day.
She was speaking to people,

the people she always would speak to
and interact with in her day.

And all the things she did
in her day, she was doing.

And then, all of a sudden,
there was nothing.

Even though she was
very bubbly on the outside,

she didn't really, deep down,
have a lot of confidence,

but she would mask everything
by just making you laugh.

She was a real joker, she was.

You could be in the room,
and she'd...

Her sense of humour
just would fill the room, you know?

We had a really good upbringing,
lots of love.

We never had loads of money,

but we made the most
of what we had, and we...

It was, um...
It was filled with love, the home,

you know, and affection.

We was never
short of affection and love.

- The thing is that we're a really,
really close-knit family.

I mean, we're very close.

We was never away from each other.

It was mainly always me and Jane.

I mean, she was more or less
glued to my side.

Even having the kids,
Jane was never out of my house.

The last time I saw Jane,

it was around about
the 13th of June.

I was on the bus,
going down Essex Road,

and I saw my sister, Jane,
with the buggy,

and I banged on the window
and shouted out to her.

And she just caught me at the last
minute, and she went like that.

And I said, "I'll see you at Mum's."

She waved up at the bus to me,
her and Taylor,

and that was the last I saw her.

Obviously,
our initial investigation team

had some serious concerns
about Jane's whereabouts,

and they wanted to do all they could
to find Jane, reassure the family.

Jane had left her two sons -
a 14-year-old son

and a 15-month-old son.

I think one of the things
we've got to remember here:

we have a family -
two sons, sisters, parents -

who are now extremely worried
about their missing daughter.

And you can never underestimate
the trauma that a family go through

when a miss...
a loved one's missing,

particularly if they're missing

in what could be perceived
as very suspicious circumstances.

She adored those children,
and that's why I knew immediately

that she would never, ever, ever
have gone and left them kids,

not...not on her own accord.

Unless she was forced to,
or abducted, or killed.

We knew straightaway

there was no way
she would leave them children.

If you know
how someone lives their life,

and then to just stop...

Bearing in mind, this is somebody
who used to contact her sisters

multiple times a day.

She was besotted with her sons.

Something's got to have happened
to Jane for that to stop.

- 32-year-old mum of two
Jane Harrison has gone missing.

She fails to return
from a pre-holiday shopping trip

to Wood Green,
and no-one has heard from her since.

What was suspicious was,

the very fact that there was
no trace of Jane anywhere.

One moment, she was shopping
happily for holiday accessories,

before flying off
to have a lovely trip to Florida.

Er, the next minute,
she'd disappeared,

seemingly from
the face of the Earth.

What could possibly have happened
to a young mother,

in broad daylight,
in the middle of London?

Ryan took it the hardest.

Taylor was only 15 months,
so he knew nothing.

It was Ryan who was
always with his mum.

She wouldn't go nowhere
without Ryan.

Everywhere she went, Ryan was there.

You know, for that to happen,
just killed Ryan.

- My mum wouldn't leave me
and my brother like that.

She loves us. She wouldn't do that.

I, myself, contacted
all the local emergency services

to ask if there's been
any accidents, or incidents

where someone's been brought in,

through losing their memory,
being run over, beaten - anything -

and I learnt that
she wasn't anywhere,

and that's when I broke down.

- I had the task
of having to ring my mum,

to tell her
that her daughter is missing.

So, I left it, I think, for about
two days, I left it, cos I just ...

My mum couldn't take
no more tragedy.

For Jane's mum and dad,

the fear of losing Jane
is unthinkable.

They'd already lost one child.

- We had another sister,
Shelly - Michelle.

And when I was six,
we was in a car accident.

And, unfortunately,
Shelly passed away,

which brought us as girls so...
more closer together.

So, my mum and dad was
very protective of us growing up.

After Jane went missing,

I don't think there was
a night that went past

that my mum weren't sobbing.

The search for Jane is underway,

as concerns for her welfare grow.

- The Missing People Charity
got involved

in the disappearance
of Jane Harrison,

when the family got in touch,

and it was a really...

one of those kind of unusual
sets of circumstances.

For the majority of the people
who are missing, they go missing.

They decide, they leave.

They're trying to get away
from something.

However, some people become missing,

and that was what happened
to Jane Harrison.

- Why would Jane disappear,

if she was looking forward
to this once-in-a-lifetime holiday?

It didn't make sense.

And vitally, who was the last person
that saw her Jane alive?

Who was the last person
to have contact with Jane?

- The family are mystified.
They have no explanation.

They don't understand
what's happened,

and nor do the police.

The police try and just look at
what the evidence is telling them.

So, the eyes of the police
turn towards the last person

to see her alive -
Jane's partner, Kevin.

- Jane met Kevin Doherty
in a nightclub in 1992,

and quickly fell for his charm.

- Me and Jane
went to Charlie Chan's club -

that was a sort of good club
back in the day -

and I remember Jane sitting
at the bar, talking to this fella.

And I could tell by his mannerisms
that he thought he was God's gift.

And then me and Jane
left on our own.

We got a cab home.

And unbeknown to me,
he'd got Jane's phone number.

I said to her, "Jane, there's
something about him I don't like."

But obviously,
she ended up seeing him,

and she fell in love with him.

- I met him a couple of weeks
into their relationship,

and I didn't like him
from the minute I met him.

I just got an energy from him,
that I just thought,

"Well, there's just something
about him."

And I thought, "I'll just give him
the benefit of the doubt."

You can't judge a person just by
meeting them one or two times.

From the outset, Kevin tells Jane

he is separated
from the mother of his children.

- He said that they had
a very good friendship,

that they shared custody
of the children.

He said, the only reason
he's not divorced her yet

is because of financial reasons,

and it was easier that way on
the children, and stuff like that.

That's what he told my sister, Jane.

As their relationship develops,

Kevin proves himself
to be kind and generous

with Jane's teenage son, Ryan.

- Ryan loved him,
he was good as gold.

He was good as gold to everyone.

And he was very kind
around everyone.

And, you know, he'd bring my mum
flowers, or come out for a meal.

- Two years into their relationship,
Jane and Kevin had a child.

It was Jane's second child,

and it was Doherty's fourth child,

as he had three with his wife.

- When Jane found out
she was pregnant with Taylor,

she was over the moon.

They'd go out,
he'd buy her all shopping.

He'd buy the baby everything
she needed - pram, cots.

- All she ever wanted
was a lovely family unit.

But soon after Taylor is born,

cracks start to appear
in Jane and Kevin's relationship.

- You know, she left him
quite a few times,

and she moved in with my mum
for about six, seven weeks.

She'd probably meet him.

But obviously,
he used to manipulate her,

and he used to get round her.

And of course,
she went back with him.

- And this is the thing.

They'd be alright
for about three weeks,

and then he'd cause a big argument
and go off for a week.

Where... Where was he going?
I don't know.

- Kevin was a very jealous man,

and he used to play
mind games with her.

So, I used to say,
"Come and stay with me."

She did come and stay with me.

But the thing is, he'd come round
and he'd win her back.

And this is how it went
all the time.

One minute, they was OK.

They weren't OK, they was OK,
they weren't OK.

But Jane loved him, and she'd had
his little baby, Taylor.

- And then he started doing
really controlling behaviour things,

like silly things.

Like, you know, hiding the pram,

so she couldn't go out
if it wasn't there.

- She'd say,
"Max, he's following me."

And I'd say,
"Oh, Jane, don't be stupid.

You're getting paranoid,"
but then I saw it myself.

Because me and her,
and another girl -

a cousin of ours - was in the park
in Highbury Corner, with our kids,

and we...and Jane went to me,
"Look, Max, he's over there."

We looked. He was behind a tree.

So, he was following her.

- He would just do some
really cruel things, like, um...

She was very, very clean
in the house, Jane.

She'd always clean up and tidy.

And one day, they'd had an argument,

and about two days later,
I could smell this awful smell.

And I'm like, "Jane,
where's this smell coming from?"

She's like, "I don't know.

I've emptied all the bins,
I've washed this out."

It stunk like rotting meat
or something,

and she called the housing people
out to try and find it.

They traced it back... You know
the boiler, the cover of the boiler?

He'd actually put meat inside there.

Yeah, now that's...that's...
that's very strange behaviour.

He'd leave, like,
knickers in the bed,

like, pretending
he's had someone there.

He was insanely jealous -

and I don't know why,
because she idolised him.

- She used to say to me,
"Max, I'm scared of him."

I used to say, "For God's sake,
Jane, get away from him."

And one of the things
we do know

about her relationship
with Kevin Doherty

is that it was very volatile,

and we are aware now that there was
domestic abuse that took place.

But back in the day, back in 1995,

the recognition of domestic violence
isn't what it is today.

Obviously,
when Jane was seeing Kevin -

I think about a year
or whatever went by -

I've started noticing
bruises on her.

And I said to her,
"Jane, what's going on?"

She'd make up an excuse.

"Oh, I done this," "I fell,"
"I done that."

But, er, you know,
you don't really see things.

I can't say I witnessed anything.

Yeah, she said
that they was all perfect.

Like, they was very happy,
it was really in a good place.

There was no reason
for him to want to hurt Jane.

They was going to Florida
and everything.

And a neighbour said,
"That's not the case.

I saw them that morning.

He was arguing with her,
like that in her face."

But you know, she was ashamed
in the early days to say, you know,

"Perhaps I've got it wrong here."

She really wanted it to work.

she really wanted
this lovely family unit.

Probably about six weeks
before she went missing,

he said he was gonna kill her,

and he was gonna bury her
near Epping Forest,

and no-one was
ever gonna find her...

..and he was right.

- And I said to the police,

"She's not missing, he's killed her.

He has killed my sister."

- Mum of two Jane Harrison
has been missing for four days,

and revelations about the
controlling and violent behaviour

of her partner, Kevin Doherty,

has put him in the police spotlight.

- Within a matter of days, it became
plain that the prime suspect -

or the person who should
have known where Jane was -

was Kevin Doherty,

and he was pulled in for questioning
on a number of occasions.

But each time,
Doherty told the police

he had no idea where she was,

he had not been involved
in her disappearance,

and the last he had seen of Jane

was when he dropped her off
near her mother's flat.

- Unbeknown to Kevin, was that
Jane's mum was actually in Ireland.

And also, Jane didn't have
a key to her mum's house,

so she couldn't get into the house.

It was an inconsistency
that added to the intrigue

and the suspicion
that was being laid at Kevin's door.

- The whole idea that Jane
would have asked Doherty

to drop her off
outside an empty flat,

when she would just have been
standing in the street,

is inconceivable.

And that's when I told
Kevin, "Why are you lying?

Because how could you have
just dropped her at Mum's,

when Mum wasn't there?"

And he didn't know what to say.

The longer a person is missing,

the more anxious
the police will become,

because then you're looking at,

"Right, why do we have no answers?"

It might be that there is
something nefarious involved.

The way you prove
somebody has died -

when they're missing
and you don't know where they are -

you have to do proof of life.

Even if you want to just disappear,
you'll always leave

some kind of footprint -
be it with utility companies,

be it with housing,
be it travelling documents.

So, it is literally contacting every
type of agency you can think of,

to see whether this person
is known to them

and whether they've had any contact

post the moment they disappeared.

So, it is a huge presentation
to a court, to say,

"This person's life
has stopped here."

- The longer it went
without any sort of trace at all,

it was deeply suspicious.

As the investigation
into Kevin Doherty intensifies,

detectives uncover
more shocking revelations.

Jane and Doherty had been
shopping for holiday accessories,

because they had been due
to go on holiday to Florida,

just two days after
Jane disappeared.

Jane was very much
looking forward to it,

and very excited about the prospect
of such an exciting holiday.

- The initial investigation team
found documents

to say that the holiday
had been booked,

but it'd never been paid for.

He knew he wasn't going to Florida,

because he'd already cancelled
all the travellers cheques,

and he'd done one or two digits
on the card wrong.

Everything he done that day
was just a ploy

to lead Jane into
a false sense of security,

and all along he had different plans
for my sister that day.

Jane thought she was coming home.

Jane got meat out of the freezer
to cook that night.

Jane had every intention
of coming back home.

She wouldn't have left her son
and just vanished.

It's possible that she could
have been snatched off the street,

but it's more likely that she went
with someone she knew.

And so, immediately,
the focus would come down

to who was a likely suspect
amongst those people she knew.

Doherty was under pressure
from her sisters

to report Jane's disappearance
to the police,

but he still waited for a day

until he went to the police to say
that he didn't know where she was.

The delay in raising the alarm,

from what should have been
a concerned partner -

a man worried to death
about his missing girlfriend -

again is deeply suspicious.

The description of Jane

Kevin provided to police
when he reported her missing

is further cause for concern.

He said that she was really pale,

she had fair hair,
she had blue eyes,

and that she was very depressed.

And I said,
"That's... That's not my sister.

My sister has
a really dark complexion.

She's got piercing green eyes."

You'd know her anywhere.
Do you know what I mean?

She had sparkling white teeth.

She was very bubbly.

She weren't timid and depressed.

- Doherty claimed that...

to the police,
that as far as he was concerned,

it seemed that Jane had run off
with some other man,

and he claimed
that he had found some evidence

of a man being in her bedroom.

- Oh, he was slagging my sister off,
saying this and saying that -

which was all false,
cos nothing was ever proven.

It seems that Kevin's lies
had started many years earlier.

Doherty was
a distinctly dubious character.

He was having
a relationship with Jane,

and they'd had a child together,
but he was still seeing his wife.

- In my mind,
Kevin was definitely becoming

a significant person of interest,
if not a suspect,

in relation to Jane's disappearance.

Kevin was leading a double life.

He had a family in Woodford -

a partner and three children
in Woodford -

which was unbeknown to Jane.

And he was also living with Jane,
and building a life with Jane

and their 15-month-old
son in Islington.

With the domestic abuse background,

Kevin had been the last person
who we know definitely saw Jane,

and also the holiday
that was booked, but never paid for,

I would now start thinking,
"What are we dealing with here?

Um, is this something more sinister
than just a missing person inquiry?

Do we now think
that Jane is possibly dead?"

- Police now believe
that Jane is no longer alive,

and they're increasingly convinced
that Kevin Doherty is responsible.

They make the decision
to arrest Doherty for abduction.

Everything we had
was very circumstantial:

limited phone evidence;

Kevin probably being the last person
that we knew who'd seen Jane;

previous allegations - not made
to police, but to family members -

and what family members had seen
in respect of domestic abuse;

and the coercive and controlling
behaviour of Doherty.

There wasn't anything that we could
actually, physically say,

"This is what happened to Jane.

This is where it happened,
and this is how it happened."

- When they confronted Kevin
with that, he just clammed up.

Not ... "No comment.
Gonna get a solicitor,"

and just made no comment.

- Cos when the police
brought him in for questioning,

they said he's the most arrogant
person they've ever met.

- It was a big source of frustration
to that initial investigation team,

when you know
that somebody's responsible,

but there isn't the evidence there
to present to a court, to say,

"This person is responsible."

With a lack of hard evidence,

police have no choice but to let
Kevin Doherty walk free...

..but the frantic search for Jane
continues.

- Her two sisters,
Maxine and Claire,

were really driving it in the press,

to try and keep their sister's
name out there.

Jane went on
millions of milk bottles.

Also, she was on the side of a bus,
local bus.

Um, she was constantly
in the local Islington Gazette.

They kept it really high-profile.

You know, everybody in Islington
was looking for Jane.

It seemed inconceivable
that a woman could disappear,

seemingly off the face of the Earth,
in just a short time,

after she'd been shopping
in broad daylight,

in one of the most crowded
shopping malls in North London.

The police hit the buffers so fast

that they literally could not find
any trace of her,

or anybody who could have seen her,

since she left
that Wood Green shopping mall,

and they had absolutely no leads.

The case was actually wound down
in September 1995,

just barely three months
after it had opened.

And it seemed there was no end

to the heartache for Jane's family,

as first her father, John, died,

and then her mother, Dylis.

- And my poor mum and dad
went to their grave

with not knowing what happened
to their daughter.

- I asked for a cold case review

and they came to see me,
and they said,

"We're gonna look at this
as a whole new case.

We're gonna take it apart,
bit by bit by bit,

as if it happened yesterday."

- It was clear that...
the original investigation team...

It was clear they felt
that Kevin Doherty was responsible

for Jane's disappearance
and, ultimately, Jane's demise.

- And one of the key elements here
was cell site evidence.

Police can now interrogate the
mobile phone of the chief suspect,

to find out where he was
at those times

and the phone calls
that he was making.

- One of the things
that was very clear,

was that there was a big gap in the
understanding of Doherty's phone -

how it was used, when it was used,
where it was used.

On the night
of Jane's disappearance,

Kevin returned home

and there were a couple
of phone calls to home -

one which was heard
by the babysitter,

one by Jane's 14-year-old son.

Um, it's the landline that rings.

Doherty answers it.

- When he put the phone down,
Doherty told the babysitter,

"That was Jane" -
and that she'll be back soon.

A few hours later,
Jane's son arrived home...

..and, in a similar fashion,
Jane's landline went again.

Doherty picks it up and says,

"Don't worry, just come home."

Puts the phone down,
and tells the...

Jane's son and the babysitter,
"That was Jane again."

The cell site evidence revealed
some astonishing new evidence,

and was a massive breakthrough
in the investigation.

They found that two phone calls
that Doherty claimed he had received

just hours after
Jane's disappearance,

when he was visiting Jane's flat,

were found to be completely bogus.

- The phone calls to the landline
were made from his mobile.

- And police immediately suspected
that here was Doherty

trying to establish
a false alibi for himself

in the hours after
Jane had gone missing.

And what he'd done,

he had a mobile,
and he rang her house phone.

So, when he'd made sure
he'd got in the front room,

that house phone rang,
he answered it.

Ryan went to get it,
and he wouldn't let him.

He said, "No, I'll get it."
And he went, "Oh, hello, Jane.

Where are you?
How long you gonna be?"

Making out she was on the phone.

So, Ryan, her son, said,
"Let me speak to Mummy."

And he said, "Oh, no, she's gone."

That was the evidence they had.

North London mum of two
Jane Harrison

has been missing for 15 years.

Police now believe she is dead...

..and the spotlight is firmly
on her partner, Kevin Doherty.

New analysis of his phone records
throws up inconsistencies

in his account of his whereabouts
on the day Jane disappeared.

- The fact that he said that, when
Jane went missing on that night,

he went to all the pubs in Hoxton,
looking for Jane -

because he said, "Jane's in a pub" -

it actually proved
that he was nowhere near Hoxton.

He was actually over in East London,

where we believe
he may have had lock-ups.

- Police obviously went
and examined the lock-up garages,

but over the period of time,
there's clearly...

no forensic evidence
was going to be available,

however suspicious
that it could have been

that that was where
Doherty had taken her.

- Even more inconsistencies
started coming to the fore,

and provided grounds
to arrest and re-interview Kevin.

The police came round to tell me.

Well, I was jumping
all round the front room.

I was crying; I was happy.

I just could not believe,
after all these years,

they've finally got him.

The police, you know, was...

We was just all over the moon
that something's finally happened.

Kevin did speak, initially,
to the interview teams.

However, when the interview teams

started talking
about the phone evidence,

he then started going,
"No comment."

With Doherty stonewalling,
police review all the evidence

gathered by detectives
in the 1995 investigation.

- Our understanding and our maturity

in respect of
how we deal with domestic abuse,

has come on leaps and bounds
to what it was in 1995.

When you look at Jane and Kevin's
relationship at that time,

the amount of things that flashed
"high-risk" were huge:

the coercive, controlling behaviour;
the isolation;

the psychological games
that Kevin played;

the escalation of violence.

When you've got
circumstantial evidence,

it is all those little things.
It's like a drip-drip-drip effect.

A lot of the initial accounts
that Kevin had provided to police

had been unpicked
and shown to be not true.

There was clear evidence that
supported that he was telling lies.

It was very, very good
circumstantial evidence

that could now be presented
to the CPS for a charging decision

and, ultimately,
to take the case to court.

Despite there being
no trace of Jane's body,

Kevin Doherty is charged
with her murder.

- When the police
finally charged him,

we was over the moon.

- We were just, like, elated.

I mean, I had every emotion going.

I was sad, happy.

Literally took my breath away.

With little
physical evidence, however,

Doherty's conviction
is by no means certain.

- To prove a homicide, you need
to prove that someone's died.

Obviously, without a body,

that makes that challenge
exceedingly difficult.

- Well, the obstacles
that one would have is, to...

..be satisfied that there is proof

that the victim is no longer living.

And without that proof,

without that degree
of potential certainty,

it would be very difficult -
if not dangerous -

to prosecute somebody.

- With no body,
they had no crime scene -

with all the forensics
that might have produced.

Er, they didn't even have
a cause of death.

You have to prove
beyond all reasonable doubt

that Kevin is responsible
for the murder of Jane Harrison.

And if there is that slight
bit of doubt in a jury's mind,

then they invariably will return
a "not guilty" verdict.

- And we finally went to court.

They said it was touch-and-go.

It was just so...
It was terrible.

We was petrified
that he was gonna get off.

We was petrified.

Huge anticipation when
the trial started in January 2013.

A huge media gathering,

and Jane's family
were there as well.

Created a real intensity,

to see Doherty
being produced in court.

Just... My stomach
was doing somersaults.

I hadn't seen him in 18 years,

and he just looked the same monster
that he did the last time I saw him.

You could see it in his eyes,
the evilness.

Every single day,
we could see him,

just sat with a big, smug, fat face
he had on him.

He just did not care
what he was putting us through.

It was like,
as if he was dead inside.

He just had no remorse whatsoever.

- So, we just had to sit there,

listen to his absolute...
crap of lies.

The prosecution suggested
that Doherty was

a...obsessional
and controlling person,

and that Jane was a single-minded
and independent woman,

who would never have stood
for that kind of control.

The circumstantial evidence
clearly was:

that he was the last person
to have seen her alive;

that he had lied repeatedly
to the police

about his explanations
of his movements;

and the cell site evidence,

which showed that he'd tried
to create a false alibi.

The defence's case, basically,

was that he had dropped her off
at her mother's flat nearby,

and that he had
never seen her again,

and that he had no involvement
with her disappearance.

The climax of the trial was
a hugely intense and emotional time,

not least for Jane's family,
who had waited 18 years

for this moment of justice

for the man that they believed
had murdered Jane.

On the 29th January,
after a three-week trial,

the jury retires
to consider its verdict.

- We was in that dock - me,
Claire and her children - and we ...

Our knuckles was white from,
you know, the terror.

We was terrified he was gonna walk.

When the verdict is returned,

it sends shockwaves
through the court.

The jury were unable
to agree on the murder charge.

- The jury returned
a majority verdict of ten-to-two,

saying Kevin was guilty
of manslaughter.

Anyone convicted of murder,
it is an automatic life sentence.

With manslaughter,
you just get a fixed sentence -

and Kevin got a fixed sentence
here of 12 years.

- Well, the basic
common law definition of murder

requires an intention...

either to kill, or to hurt them
so severely that they will die.

Manslaughter is
a sort of a secondary...

form of...criminal act,

because there is
no specific intention to kill -

that is the difference.

It's an absolute disgrace.

It's an insult
to my sister's memory,

an absolute insult.

I came home, and I just cried
and cried and cried that night.

Judge Christopher Moss
told Doherty directly,

"You are the only person who knows
how Jane died and where she is now,

and you're the only person
who has to make the decision

whether anybody else should know."

He described this "evil secret"
that Doherty had,

and he made it perfectly plain
that he should tell the police

where Jane's remains were hidden,

so the family could have
a proper funeral.

Despite the judge's urging,

Doherty refuses to reveal
the whereabouts of Jane's body.

- And that's how nasty
and horrible he is.

He will not tell us,
cos he's not admitting guilt.

Five years after
Doherty's conviction,

Maxine and Claire receive
some further devastating news.

- We found out
he was only gonna do six years.

That, to me,
was the biggest kick in the teeth.

- Whatever sentence you're given,

you are entitled to a 50% reduction
for good behaviour.

- We even went
to the Houses of Parliament.

We've done everything in our power
to keep him inside.

He was free to walk
the streets of London -

regardless of what he had done
in the past,

and regardless of the evil secret
he still kept to himself,

to the anguish of Jane's family.

To know
that someone's taken her life

and just living round the corner,
happily, laughing at you, is...

You know, it's hard, it's hard.

- We're still the same now,
as what we was in 1995.

Our hearts are still broke,
from that day to this day -

and it will be broke all the time,
until we find Jane.

I can't imagine for a moment

what this must be like
for Claire and Maxine,

and also for
Jane's two sons as well.

Um, to actually know
that your mum has been killed,

but then not to know why, where,
or where she's now laying,

I can't even
begin to imagine the impact

that would have on someone.

I mean,
it's a special kind of grief.

It's a special kind of grief
that you get -

you just can't end it.

All we want is to bury Jane
and get on with our lives.

Something for her children -
your son -

to go and drop a flower
on her birthday,

and something to remember her.

I will never give up
looking for Jane, never.

As long as I've got a breath in me,
I will never stop looking.
