Junichi Okamoto,
student of a high school in Tokyo.

Misako, a sister of Junichi.
She is also a student in Tokyo.

An old school mate of Junichi, Taro Maesaka.
He is a student of a commercial high school.

Don't be noisy.

Making a noise is our privilege.

Naotaro Sakuda is working as a
coachman in order to support his poor family.

�. That coachman is Sakuda, isn't he.

that brilliant boy at our primary school?

He used to say that he would
become a doctor of agriculture.

Taro's home is the finest in the village.

--- Night--- From every home comes
light of comfort and pleasure.

Junichi's father who is a rich farmer,
Junsaku. Junichi's mother, Oshima.

Naotaro's father,
Sakubei is a poor tenant farmer.

Naotaro's mother, Okiku,
who has a kind heart.

His sister Okinu is a gentle girl.

Poor Naotaro. You cannot
study further because we are poor.

The school teacher also
wanted him to study further.

Naotaro was ashamed of himself because
his school friends came back from Tokyo.

My brother could be at the
top position if he went to high school.

Father, I would like to go to Tokyo.

return as a great man.

I am studying in Tokyo.

gathered and discussed the problems of the village.

The club was popular as usual.

Taro Maesaka and his friends are having a party

He tells us exciting stories of Tokyo.

Buddhist ceremony for my family.

Finally I have gotten
away from that boring meeting.

Maesaka, why did you
organize such a club?

to let my village friends know city life.

The country life is simplicity.

A man like you who's only graduated from a
primary school does not understands our taste.

No, our teacher taught us that a man's character
is more precious than learning.

Everybody, does not act like that.
We have many things to do.

More than music, more than dance, you have
greater enterprise to study. It is agriculture.

If we all long for the city and leave agriculture,
what is our land coming to?

What is Japan Coming to?

Please love our land. And please
be proud of being a farmer.

Forgive me. I had a
mistaken idea for our village.

-The following day-

The inspector of the county visited
this village with a foreign professor

who was researching primary schools in Japan.

He saved the life of my child.

He is a promising young man,
but his family is so poor�

I would like to support him
and give him a complete education.

Sakuda, this gentleman from abroad
wants to give you a complete education.

You can study any kind of discipline.

What is our land coming to?
What is Japan coming to?

Sir, I decided to remain in this
village and become a good farmer.

But it is more important for me to be a farmer
who is independent and self-improving.
