Have you and your wife ever talked about what would happen if you didn't come back?
I know exactly what it feels like when parents worry about their children.
I am Alexey Molchanov's wife.
And for me all of his dives are stressful. I'm always terrified.
If there is some goal, Alexey will find a way to achieve it.
This has been true since childhood.
What motivated him?
We could buy him off with chocolates, that's all.
If Alexey wanted candy, he would get it.
He was quite determined and stubborn,
so if he wanted to do something, nothing could distract him.
He trained a lot with Natalia, and they would start at 5 a.m.
Natalia was very tightly involved with him.
Alexey had everything scheduled by the hour.
He went to every club he could as a kid.
When he graduated from high school and went to college,
this is where he started competitive freediving in Moscow.
That's mom's strong influence right there.
His first trip was to Egypt.
This was the moment where he fell in love with the sport.
Freediving allows you to merge with the ocean.
And it's like we become fish in the water.
And we observe the underwater world from the inside.
Natalia surrounded him
with so much attention that for a long time,
he couldn't even think about getting married.
His main motivation is his mother,
she is the main idol for this man.
Strong-willed victories and all our Olympians
have become the real decorations of the games.
Director: And if someone said,
"Well of course William Trubridge doesn't want Alexey to compete,
because Alexey is going to maybe take his No Fins or set a bunch of World Records?"
We have daily video calls,
and Max always points at the screen and says, "Daddy!"
Today he is here, tomorrow he isn't.
Everyone's very emotional.
We developed the attention deconcentration technique,
which we also incorporated into the cosmonaut training system.
Normally, our attention goes from object to object.
Attention deconcentration is the opposite.
We move on to the perception of the background.
There is no fatigue. No tension.
Fear does not arise.
We're essentially weightless, as in space, floating.
And we are alone with our internal dialogue.
The superficial fades away,
our deepest motives and impulses remain
and come to the forefront.
It's the best form of self-discovery.
Natalia was always attentive and warm.
And always eager to try new things.
Natalia grew up swimming and training.
Natalia met Oleg at school.
He was a handsome boy
with a good sense of humor.
I was pursuing her for a long time.
Then she took notice of me,
we got married, and that's it.
Director: What's the dog's name?
I don't want to talk about what happened with Natalia
because she can't respond anymore.
There was a crisis that we failed to overcome.
The kids must have had a rough time, of course.
It certainly has had an impact.
Absolutely.
Natalia withdrew into herself with her pain.
I felt that something inside her had broken, in a way.
She didn't try to talk about it or share it with anyone.
She was deeply affected by it.
And she needed something new to occupy her.
And I remember her saying,
that there's this sport called freediving, and she wanted to give it a try.
When Natalia started practicing freediving, she changed a lot.
She became full of life and active.
She was exuding the zest for life.
She suddenly started writing poems.
POEM BY NATALIA MOLCHANOVA
When we're at depth, embraced by the sea,
creative impulses naturally emerge.
She started freediving, and she achieved very impressive results right away.
She set her very first record in France in 2003.
And then the records started rolling in.
One, thirty-five.
How long have you been cooking? Three or four minutes?
Three or four minutes.
On one side, and then we turn it.
It's better to turn it.
Okay.
So it's "Sucker."
- "Sucker"? - Yeah, "Sucker."
Alexey Molchanov, 133 meters, monofin.
We dealt with it in a similar way.
We threw ourselves into work,
to not be distracted by the horror of the situation.
His mom was everything to him.
He had a special connection with her.
White card, Alexey!
World record!
Director: Who are you texting?
I'm wondering if he is rested enough.
I know he's got it in him.
Since he's Alexey.
I think he's trying to see how much he's got.
But yeah, I don't think he'll get it.
Shall we try the ice cream?
Is it good?
This is my son.
